Yo dude I love thinking about things like this, bc languages are so cool and complex and evolving and interwoven. But like, I can just imagine a nation being really immersed in the moment and doing a kinda language blorp. And it could be a full on switch, or the wrong century's slang slipping out by accident, out when your brain does that thing where it mixes up different languages in a way that almost makes sense but only if you know the different languages. For ex, I've accidentally said things like "I'm going to つて-it" tsuteru being Japanese for "throw out [garbage]" when I was going to toss a piece of trash. Bc thoughts are abstract, and so in trying to communicate my desire to toss my trash, my brain pulled words that communicated that feeling, just not in a way that is 100% correct in either language. So I love to think of nations doing stuff like that, except it's 1000% worse bc they're old as butts and sometimes their brain can't be bothered to sort out all these systems of vocalizing thoughts
Okay random thought but
Would it be possible for nations suddenly relapse and involuntarily start speaking some old dead language they used to know? Would they even remember this or the fact that they developed along with their language make the older languages forgotten? It’s interesting to think that if they’re not thinking or if they think about the past too much they slip up and forget some things, or if they just start speaking entirely in some older version of their language
Imagine England starts to speak Old English/Anglo-Saxon absentmindedly, and when he realizes this he has to go from there to Middle English before he goes back to Modern English. Norway would speak some old Norse, or Italy would suddenly switch into Latin. Maybe France would remember some Gothic. It’s different for every country and it’s easier to have England as an example because the development of English is relatively easy to organize into stages, but it’d be cool if the nations still remember the older versions and speak it fluently and some nerd hears them and is like “!!!! but I thought that language went extinct centuries ago!” and the nations just sigh and be like yeah man it did
