I’m a Canadian cosplayer who has been cosplaying since 2007. I’ve had a love for Victorian fashion since I very young age (my little kid brain basically made the connection that Victorian dresses = women dressing like Disney princesses IRL), but the thing that kickstarted my desire to learn sewing was going to a fabric store with my mother when I was in my senior year of high school and seeing a Butterick pattern catalogue that had Victorian-inspired costumes. Almost instantly I had a lightbulb moment that if I learned to sew, I could actually wear those big fancy gowns I loved.   

I entered university and, over the next few years, spent my free time reading and learning everything I could about sewing. In 2007, my best friend invited me to Anime North - she was going as a gothic lolita-inspired version of the Queen of Hearts, so I decided I would make a Mad Hatter to accompany her.

I was so excited that I jumped in completely head-first, and it ended up being my first foray into both sewing and pattern drafting. In hindsight it was wildly ambitious for a first project (and I’m still a little surprised that I actually pulled it off!), but I’m so glad that my enthusiasm made me persevere and psh through the challenges, because I learned a ton from that experience and ended up with a cosplay I was thrilled with.

I remember seeing myself in the mirror the first time and being so happy when I realized I’d been able to bring something to life from my imagination. When my friend and I got to the con, things only got better from there - the atmosphere was so energetic and colourful thanks to all the amazing cosplays, and it was filled with so many fun, enthusiastic, and friendly people. From that day I was officially hooked on cosplay.

I’m part of the Toronto Steampunk Society and, each year at Fan Expo Canada, we hold an Annual Costume Challenge where we pick a theme and encourage people to make a costume based on the theme. A couple of years ago, the theme was ‘steampunk video game characters’ and one of my friends in the TSS, Modern Myths Cosplay, thought it would be cute to do Princess Peach and Princess Daisy.

I loved the idea and, after more discussion, we decided to do a steampunk twist on the Super Smash Bros Brawl version since it was fancier and seemed to lend itself well to a steampunk interpretation. Though Daisy isn’t officially in Brawl, my friend was fortunately able to dig up some fan edits of Peach in Daisy’s colours, so with that we were set.

I usually make my outfits myself, but since my friend and I wanted to ensure our cosplays matched, we decided to work collaboratively and divide things: I would create the bodices and accessories for both gowns, and she would create the skirts and crinolines.

I started off by drafting the base bodice patterns. Since I draft all my costumes, I used my existing bodice block/master patterns for myself and drafted a bodice block from scratch for my friend based on her measurements. One neat thing about working this way was that it basically turned into a girls’ weekend where I was able to teach my friend more about pattern drafting, which ended up making the process unexpectedly fun and memorable.

After I finished fitting my friend’s bodice block, I got to work drafting our bodice patterns based on the reference pics we had collected. Being able to tackle both bodices ended up working well since it enabled me to draft them in a way that made them visually match identical while taking our respective body shapes into account.

A couple of mockups and fittings later, we had an idea of how much fabric we needed, so we went fabric shopping. My friend suggested that we go with richer, more regal-looking tones instead of strictly game-accurate colours, so when we found a place selling gorgeous peau de soie and sparkle organza, I was instantly sold on a gold and burnt orange colour scheme.

We split the fabric based on our respective portions and worked on them separately. I cut and sewed the bodices, which was fairly straight forward but time-consuming! The part that sticks in my mind the most was the center front panel because it had so many pieces and layers - two types of satin, two types of organza (including one that had to be ruched to the base panel in multiple places), five rows of lace, interfacing...and that doesn’t even include the lining!

I also created our jewelry and crowns. The brooches and earrings were made from filigree settings that I painted, glued gems, and attached pin backs and earring hooks to, and the crowns are made from craft foam painted in gold acrylic, with embellishments assembled from painted filigree stampings and gems.

My friend created our cage skirts from 1/4 PEX pipe and brown grosgrain ribbon, which ended up being the perfect hoop skirt material since it was cheap, lightweight, and strong enough to support the huge, heavy skirts. She cut and sewed our skirts (including attaching meters and meters of trim that I’d painted white to better match the game colours) and she also made our bloomers.

The gowns were a huge undertaking and, thanks to work and general real life eating up time, we did end up engaging in the dreaded con crunch, but fortunately in the end we were able to get them to a state where they were pretty and wearable!

The response at the convention was absolutely amazing - I don’t think I’ve ever had a costume elicit the reactions that Princess Daisy did. We figured that, since we were cosplaying the princesses from Mario, there was a good chance we might be recognized, but the thing I wasn’t prepared for was how genuinely happy and excited people were, especially when they saw us together. We literally had kids waving at us from across the street when they spotted us.

Even grown-ups loved it - we were frequently stopped for pictures, and even a couple of the folks in the dealer’s room who were running booths would break into huge smiles and ask for pictures. Plus, people loved the steampunk twist and were delighted when they realized how much our costumes matched.

The best, most heartwarming response to my Princess Daisy cosplay happened when I met up with some other friends and one tapped me on the shoulder, pointed behind me and said, “I think she wants a picture with the princess.” I turned around and, standing a few feet away, was this adorable, super shy little black girl who was staring in my direction. My heart instantly melted and I went over to her and had a little chat and took a picture with her.

As a black cosplayer who has run several panels on BIPOC cosplay and spoken about the importance of diversity and representation in cosplay, being able to show that sweet little girl that someone who looks like her can be a princess - and showing kids of other races that Princess Daisy can be black - was a vivid reminder that representation does matter.

Since I got into the hobby, cosplay has been a big part of my life and has positively impacted me in so many ways. It has been an incredible creative outlet that has given me the chance to express myself, and it has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people - many of whom are now among my closest friends. However, I think one of the most rewarding things about cosplay has been how it has allowed me to provide BIPOC cosplay representation and visibility within my local cosplay community. I often do Afro-steampunk cosplay, and one of the most unexpectedly moving things I’ve experienced has been other BIPOC saying to me that seeing my outfits make them feel like they can cosplay.

It has been humbling and has motivated me to get more involved in the cons I attend. For the past several years I’ve run panels on diversity in cosplay/steampunk as well as sewing and cosplay construction, which has enabled me to share the knowledge and skills I’ve learned. I also lead the steampunk section of the Anime North Fashion Show, and I’ve made a point to recruit as diverse a roster of models as possible. I’m happy that we’ve been able to showcase steampunk looks inspired by various cultures including Chinese, Indian, and Morrocan.

Another plus is that the sewing skills I’ve learned from cosplay have come in handy in other areas of my life. It has been fun - and surprisingly empowering - to be at a point where I can use my sewing ability to create one-of-a-kind outfits for formal work events (like office holiday parties) that make me feel pretty and confident.

Something I’ve frequently mentioned during my BIPOC cosplay/steampunk panels is that the simple act of showing up to a con or event in cosplay can have an impact because you never know how much that visibility can inspire other BIPOC to get into the hobby, so my advice to anyone wanting to get into cosplay is to do it! Overall I have found it to be a fun, creative, energizing experience.

While I’ve been extremely fortunate to have had overwhelmingly positive experiences while cosplaying, I recognize that, unfortunately, BIPOC do sometimes face harassment and outright racist comments (especially online) that can make getting into the hobby seem scary. Finding welcoming, supportive spaces in person and online can be a big help (the POC Cosplay group on Facebook is great for this) - plus, thanks to things like #28DaysOfBlackCosplay, there is more visibility and inspiration out there than ever before.

The other thing I’d add is to treat each cosplay as a learning experience. Being able to work so closely with my friend on creating a cosplay was a completely different creation process than I’m used to, and it was really cool to be able to learn from each other’s different working styles and experience. It was great to teach her pattern drafting and see how happy she was to learn skills she could apply to future cosplays, and I was so excited when she showed me her PEX pipe hoop skirt method. Looking back on my Princess Daisy cosplay makes me smile because it’s almost like a physical representation of the fun we have cosplaying together.

12. if you could change one ending to a book/show/game/etc, what would you change about it?

I’m pretty much obsessed with The Suicide Squad, it’s my movie of the year at the moment--buuuut I think the ending is a little...wrapped up in a neat little package when I feel something more bittersweet and portentous would have been more appropriate.

All we get is Polka Dot Man dying unceremoniously and then the good guys win and “well boys we did it”, whereas the whole premise of TSS is insanely expandable characters doing what they do even if rewards are out of grasp. 

Listen, I love, love love Isris Elba’s Bloodsport...but are they...really saving him for a comeback? I adore using offbeat, obscure characters but someone as esoteric as Bloodsport would’ve been an amazing oppurtunity for a pyrric victory where he doesn’t survive. King Shark has broken out into enough popularity before this movie that it makes sense he’ll live on, and killing Ratcatcher might be too much of a bummer, I kinda think Robert should’ve died, love him though I do.

That’s all said considering I do NOT know what’s planned for him in the future if anything, especially considering the upcoming Peacemaker TV show, who knows what’s in store...I just wish we had a little more bite in that ending aside from what we did get.

Above all else I think the ending as we have it now does Amanda Waller pretty dirty--she’s a phenomenal villain because even when she’s foiled she’s part of a system that pretty much can’t be, she’s every systemic corruption and she’ll thrive as long as those do--so the fact that her technicians just...hit her with a golf club to save the day and no one really faced any reprecussions of note is kind of a boner killer. 

Again the technician gang (I DO love those dorks, make no mistake), are supposed to be supporting cast in Peacemaker, maybe we’ll deal with it all there? We’ll see.

The Snicket File Inquiry

You should remember that in THH the Baudelaires siblings found page 13 of the Sinicket File. Through this page, they came to believe that one of their parents was alive. But in TSS, Quigley states that Sinicket File probably talks about Quigley's own survival. But Quigley was wrong.

 First, let's recall where the Sinicket File was stored in the Hospital Library:

THH, chapter 6:

  "What will  we  do?" Violet  asked,  ... "Where  else  could the file be?"

"Let's try  to  think," Klaus  said.  "What did  Hal  say about  the  file? We  know  it has  to  do with Jacques Snicket, and with fire."

"Prem!"  Sunny said,  which  meant "But  we  looked under  Snicket,  Jacques, and  Fire already."

"There must  be  something else,"  Violet  said. "We  have  to find  this  file. It  has  crucial information about Jacques Snicket and V.F.D."

"And about us," Klaus said. "Don't forget that."

The three children looked at one another.

"Baudelaire!" Sunny whispered. Without another word, the orphans ran to the B aisle, ... Klaus  tried  nine keys  in  a row  before  finally opening  the cabinet,  and  there, between  the  Jewish coming-of-age  ceremony  for young women,  and  the delicious  filling  of certain  doughnuts,  the children  found  a folder  marked "Baudelaire." "It's here," Klaus said, taking it out of the drawer with trembling hands.

 The Sinicket File had been stored in a folder reserved for Baudelaire affairs. This is evidence that Sinicket File was talking about the survival of one of the Baudelaire siblings' parents.

The second evidence shows that Snicket File was not talking about Quigley's survival.

What was on page 13?

THH chapter 6:

"There  were four  people  in  the  photograph, standing  together  outside a  building  the Baudelaires  recognized immediately.  It  was 667  Dark  Avenue ,  where  the orphans  had  lived with Jerome  and  Esmé Squalor  for  a brief  time,  until it  became another  place too  treacherous for  the children  to  stay. The  first  person in  the  photograph was  Jacques  Snicket, who  was looking at the photographer and smiling. Standing next to Jacques was a man who was turned away  from the  camera,  so the  children  could not  see  his face,  only  one of  his  hands, which was  clutching  a  notebook and  pen,  as if  the  obscured man  were  a writer  of  some sort.  ...  standing next  to  these two people were  another  two people  the  Baudelaire children  thought  they would  never  see again. Bundled up in long coats, looking cold but happy, were the Baudelaire parents. "Because of  the  evidence discussed  on  page nine,"  read  the sentence  above  the photograph,  "experts now  suspect  that there  may  in fact  be  one survivor  of  the fire,  but  the survivor's whereabouts are unknown."

 This page has a photo of 667 Dark Avenue. You must remember that there was a secret tunnel linking the Baudelaires' house to 667 Dark Avenue. This is further evidence that File was talking about a fire that occurred at Beatrice's house.

 In addition, Count Olaf read all the other 12 pages of the file, according to TSS, chapter 6.

 "As a  reward,"  the woman  said,  "I have  a  gift for  you,  Olaf." ... "The  Snicket file!"  he  said, in  a  hushed whisper. "It's  all  here," the  woman  said. "Every  chart,  every map  and every  photograph from  the  only file  that  could put  us  all in  jail."

It's complete  except  for page  thirteen,  of course,"  the  man said. "We  understand  that the  Baudelaires  managed to  steal  that page from  Heimlich  Hospital."

This is  the  most wonderful  gift  in  the world,"  he  said. "I'm  going  to go  read  it right  now." "We'll  all read  it  together,"  said the  woman  with hair  but  no beard. "It  contains  secrets we  all  ought to  know."..

"Let's go  into my  tent and  read  the file."  He (Olaf)  started to  walk  toward the  tent  but stopped and  glared  at his  comrades,  who were  beginning  to follow him.  "The  rest of  you  stay out  here,"  he said.  "There  are secrets  in this  file that  I  do not  want  you to  know." The  two sinister  visitors  began to  laugh,  and followed  Count  Olaf and Esmé  into  the tent  closing  the flap  behind  them."

 After Esmé and Olaf read page 9 of the file, which indicated the evidence of a survivor of a fire, they were surprised when they saw Quigley alive. That's because page 9 did not talk about Quigley.

  TSS chapter 13:

The two  Baudelaires  nodded at  one  another, and then  turned  to  see  that Quigley  was  nodding, too,  and  the three children  reached  up and  took  off their  masks  for the  greater  good. Count Olaf's  mouth  dropped open  in  surprise. "You're  dead!"  he said to  the  eldest Baudelaire,  saying  something that  he  knew full well  was  ridiculous. "You  perished  in the  caravan,  along with  Klaus!" Esmé  stared at  Klaus,  looking just  as  astonished as  her  boyfriend. "You're  dead, too!"  she  cried. "You  fell  off a  mountain!" "And  you're one  of  those twins!"  Olaf  said to  Quigley.  "You died  a long  time ago!"

 Count Olaf's surprise about Quigley indicates that he did not read about him on page 9 of the file.

So we can conclude that page 9 of the dossier was about a fire in the Baudelaire’s' house.

With that in mind, let's review the text on page 13.

"Because  of  the  evidence  discussed  on  page  nine, experts  now  suspect  that  there  may  in  fact  be  one  survivor  of  the  fire,  but  the survivor's whereabouts are unknown."

 There is a bitter truth in this text. In stating that it was possible to have a survivor, the file indicates that surely one of the Baudelaire siblings' parents died in that fire. And there is only one thing that can lead to such certainty: the discovery of a single body. The body must have been so burned that it was impossible to determine whether it belonged to the father or mother of the Baudelaires. Therefore, the text on page 13 does not distinguish between gender. What happened on that day of the fire was not an accident. It was a murder. And Bertrand died that day.

 How did Beatrice survive?

 Apparently there were witnesses who saw Beatrice after the fire.

In TEE, the Baudelaire siblings walked through the tunnel linking 667 Dark Avennue to the land where their house was. There they were able to suspend a trapdoor and find a man.

 Observe the passage from TEE chapter 11:

 The siblings  had  been in  darkness  for so  long  that their  eyes  took a  long time  to  get  used to  properly  lit surroundings,  and  they stood  for  a moment, rubbing  their  eyes and  trying  to  see  exactly where  the  trapdoor had led  them.  But in  the  sudden brightness  of  the morning  sun,  the only thing  the  children could  see  was the  chubby  shadow of  a  man standing near  them. "Excuse  me,"  Violet called,  while  her  eyes  were still  adjusting.  "We need to  get  to Veblen  Hall.  It's an  emergency.  Could you  tell  me where  it  is?" "Ju-just  two blo-blocks  that  way," the  shadow  stuttered, and  the  children gradually  realized that  it  was a  slightly  overweight mailman,  pointing down  the street  and  looking at  the  children fearfully.  "Please  don't hurt me,"  the  mailman added,  stepping  away from  the  youngsters. "We're  not going  to  hurt you,"  Klaus  said, wiping  ashes  off his  glasses. "Ghosts  always say  that,"  the mailman  said,  "but then  they  hurt you anyway." "But we're  not  ghosts," Violet  said. "Don't  tell me  you're  not ghosts,"  the  mailman replied.  "I  saw you  rise  out of the  ashes  myself, as  if  you had  come  from the  center  of the  earth. People  have always  said  it's haunted  here  on the  empty  lot where  the Baudelaire  mansion burned  down,  and now  I  know it's  true."

 Why did the neighbors of the Baudelaire mansion claim that the land was haunted? For me, the answer is: The neighbors saw Beatrice coming off the floor. They thought she was a ghost. But she was just a survivor of the fire.

Beatrice simply shielded herself from the fire inside the tunnel. Something similar had happened to Quigley. Quigley was put in the tunnel by his mother, and stayed there, being shielded from the flames by the tunnel itself. Quigley said he tried to return home after the fire, but there was something catching the trapdoor. Beatrice did not face this problem.

Super Mario Odyssey: As Told by CartoonNonsenseGirl

It all started with Mario and Bowser in the heat of battle atop a steampunk airship. Once again, Princess Peach gets kidnapped.

Mario lands in Steampunk London, complete with a sea of fog, steampunk airships, and posh top hats as far as the eye can see.

I should note that the male residents are the posh top hats, while the female residents are 1920s-ish cloche hats.

A resident of Foggy Steampunk Top Hat London has been kidnapped. Unlike the others, she’s not a standard hat, but a tiara fit for a princess.

Mario meets a new friend, a sweet and friendly Posh Top Hat.

Posh Top Hat is actually special. Not only can he take on the form of any hat (including the world famous Plumber Cap designed by Nintendo), but he can help Mario apparently use almost anything as his puppets, but for good.

That said, Mario apparently was able to take over frogs.

Soon, I learned that Mario can take over the most ridiculous things, including power lines.

Apparently, there a really long power line that connects Foggy Steampunk Top Hat London to Jurassic Park.

Now that Mario’s in Jurassic Park, Posh Top Hat apparently let’s him know about his Steampunk Airship™, which requires moon-shaped tokens with Nintendo Chibi Eyes™ to power it.

It’s those Chain Chomps from Smash! And apparently Mario can also control them.

Oh, and for the nostalgic crowd, Mario can go 8-bit!

Did I mention the Rabbit Mob Family?

The leader seems to be this blue-haired rabbit woman with a golden Chain Chomp. Mario gets some moons from her in a battle.

With enough moons, we fly off to Mexico.

Unusually, Mexico is freezing. And in the desert!

On top of that, there’s a huge upside-down pyramid... held by a Wedding Ring (SPOILER ALERT!)

After another bunny battle, the new Nintendo of America Presi- I mean, Bowser, escapes.

We don’t have taxis, we have Jaxis.

A non-bunny boss battle occurs with a giant Aztec-inspired head statue. Defeating him helped warm up Mexico.

Several moons later, and we’re at a crossroads. Off to the big Water Park!

So we land in Mermaid Water Park, to learn that a dress that wasn’t for sale was stolen.

Why are there Zippers everywhere?

On a side note, “Cheep Cheep” is the funniest name for a fish.

One the list of cutest thing in this game, 1) Cappy, and 2) the Dorrie-- are they like dino-fish? They’re really cute with their swim goggles!

Another bunny battle! And their airship has a theme song.

Off to the other location, which turns out to be the future that WALL-E could have been living were it not for BnL negligence.

More moon searching, and apparently Mario can take over stretchy lettuce and and tanks (Tanks? iN a mARiO gAmE?!!). Don’t worry, the tanks fire confetti and cotton candy.

Yet another bunny brouhaha, and a battle with a flower-stealing robot. Bowser stole a bouquet, already; not much I can do about it for now.

I guess this could be the future WALL-E and EVE created. Machines and plants living side-by-side.

Sailing off, were headed for America, but get trapped in the clouds, where out first Bowser battle takes place.

Detour to some jungle land. Judging by the background music, is this some remote jungle in Indonesia?

And apparently, I forgot to mention that we keep finding this souvenir chain called Crazy Cap. Even in remote locations like this island, Mario manages to find a shop set up.

Off to New York now. Well, unlike the rest of the places we’ve been, it’s dark, it’s raining, the people look photo-realistic with the exception of Carmen Sandiego, who is the city’s mayor, and there’s an enormous Crazy Cap store.

The city hall is under construction, and apparently Bowser just stopped by to advertise his wedding.

Avoiding giant flies, I manage to have a battle with a mecha-centipede. Those party tanks are back. (yup, there’s tanks in a Mario game)

Next day, Mario has a stroll around the city. And Carmen Sandiego is holding a festival. Who knew the Lady in Red could sing so well?

Donkey Kong made an 8-bit guest appearance (get back to Smash!)

And off we go to Scandinavia-Russia!

Adding on to the list of cute things in Odyssey, we have 1) Cappy, 2) Dorrie, and 3) Shiverians (they look cuddly!)

A race for a cake! Actually, for some moons, since Bowser took the cake (ba-dum-tss).

Off to the beach! So nice and relaxing, but we’ve got another boss battle!

This one was actually the hardest in the game for me, trying to hit that octopus with the water stream over and over. Aaaaaannnnnndddd.... Bowser stole some LaCroix water for his big day.

Is this actually a real GPF recap? or is this a place for me to vent about how demoralizing this event was? Olympic seasons are actually the worst, it’s like you get a glimmer of hope for your faves until it all gets taken away. I knew I was being sent a message when my DVR refused to record the televised GPF this weekend, and with good measure because I would’ve just deleted it anyways, just like how I’m deleting this entire event from my existence :)

Fair warning, this is basically an excuse for me to get extremely emo about my faves who all pretty much made mistakes or just flat out bombed their events. And a time for me to pointlessly complain about why the judges never get behind my faves. Oh, and lots of me stressing out about the Olympics. So, the usual.

First of all, I’m so glad we’ll be having a 1+ month break before anymore international competitions. Nats will happen of course, but the GPF has been too much in terms of stress. All my faves are tired and didn’t perform well at all. Literally all my faves. Every single one of them. I honestly need a break from this sport, thanks skating schedule. 

Ladies

So I basically wrote a soliloquy on how much I love Satoko’s skating and how much her haterz annoy me so here it is:

I'm getting tired of all the negativity that comes in every thread of a competition that Satoko competes in. That's one part I didn't miss about Satoko's hiatus. I'm not so knowledgeable or invested in the rhetoric of jumping techniques or ISU rulings, etc. so I don't have much to say about the heated debate going on about pre-rotations or URs. What I do know, however, is that Satoko has addressed her jumps countless times in interviews and to me, has visibly worked hard on improving it over the years. We've all read the practice reports; everyone knows that she drills those jumps over and over again and doesn't settle for any less. Even so much so that she's injured herself. The accusations that Satoko is purposefully cheating the judging system is perplexing to me, and the argument that she is being overscored doesn't make that much sense to me either. In fact, Satoko's had to work the hardest in order for her PCS and scores to gradually inflate like other skater's scores seem to naturally do. I don't understand why she is getting so much hate; sure, there can be critiques towards the judging system as to the coherency and enforcement of their rules, but for now, judging is how it is. Satoko's job isn't to judge and make calls on her own jumps. Her job, and the only thing she has control over, is her own performance. And to me, she's one of the most elegant and nuanced skaters in that regard. I think it's pointless to blame the skater and to go as far as accuse her of being lazy and knowingly cheating the system when all evidence points otherwise. I've anticipated Satoko's comeback for months and have been so impressed with how she's shown up these past two competitions. While I am also a fan of younger, more powerful skaters, I realized while watching her over the years that it's the skaters that tell a story and really interpret the music that move me the most. It's disheartening as a fan to see all this vitriol thrown at her, but it's also easy for me to just ignore the noise and watch her skate   I'm so excited for the Ladies FS and I hope Satoko continues her streak of good performances at the Grand Prix Final! 

TLDR; I’m used to reading negative things about Satoko; it’s almost like a tradition at this point with her, but it was at this GPF when it hit me the most. For the first time, I really felt kind of miserable about it all and I wanted to write something in support for her, because I truly truly do love her skating so much. 

The qualities that I love the most in Satoko’s skating are never rewarded what they deserve in competition which is why she’ll never win all the things that she deserves. But watching the junior event and some of her competitors right before watching her really hit me with how under appreciated she is. Like I said in my emo post, I love skaters that move me and listen to their music and actually perform. Satoko does all of that and more. I truly love her skating, I always have. But seeing everyone trying to tear her to shreds honestly just made me love her more. Keep thriving Satoko!

Her FS was a disaster in terms of scoring, thanks to the sudden attitude shift by the tech panel, I suppose. I just don’t like playing this guessing game with her scores waiting to see if she’ll be deducted or not. I hate seeing her reactions to the low scores and I hate that her PCS are underscored. Idk, it’s been like this, the same problem over and over for the past two years. At this point, waiting for her scores is like russian roulette and I’d rather just ignore it and enjoy her performances. 

Now onto a bigger mess. Here’s a smaller passage I wrote about my girl Wakaba concerning her constant underscoring:

I'm still puzzled why Wakaba's scores aren't going through the typical inflation a skater's scores usually goes through when they start performing consistently. Her scores have been great compared to her junior years, but they've pretty much been stagnant from the beginning of the season (compared to her competitors) despite consistent showings  She could trade the 3F for a 3Lo but that lowers her BV and she's already not being rewarded for consistency. 

I'm always puzzled about why Wakaba isn't benefitting from higher scores due to her consistency this season  It seems like other skaters are enjoying a meteoric rise in their PCS especially, and their scores have been gradually rising even w/o clean programs. But besides the scoring, Wakaba performed amazing at her first GPF! 

LOL at me trying to be positive at the end but tbh I just don’t get it. Why do So many skaters see such a meteoric rise in PCS but Wakaba doesn’t, despite being consistent and always skating well? Her popularity has skyrocketed this season thanks to her fabulous programs alone, so what’s taking the judges so long to finally get behind her? I shouldn’t be surprised, it took Satoko like 2 years longer to finally get the average PCS scores she’s getting now, but Wakaba is so much like EuroAmerican skaters who seem to be benefiting the most from gradual score increases. Why not her? 

And another disaster FS. But like, it was really a disaster this time. Something wasn’t right, I could tell even before she took the ice that she was more nervous than usual and something jus didn’t click with the program. What went wrong? Wakaba has never been one to crack under pressure, in fact, she usually rises to the occasion. Was the pressure of the GPF too much? Was she overworked? Just tired? Just having an off day? She looked so defeated ever since she missed that first jump, as if she knew she would already lose because she doesn’t benefit from a PCS cushion. It was so upsetting to see, especially because I could notice it affecting her performance. It lost a bit of its spark. I’m a little more concerned for her Olympic spot which she seemed to have locked down before this performance. Now it really depends on nationals. Wakaba has never failed to deliver during Nationals, and now is absolutely not the right time to start. I’m worried for her, this free skate was easily the worst she’s skated all season, and we’ve seen how good she can be with her amazing programs this season. I don’t know what’s in store for her next, I hope she can just be proud of qualifying for her first GPF and take the disappoint to fuel for Nationals.

Said in the preview that this would either be the best or the worst competition based on results. based on what I had said, this should be the worst competition. but instead, I’m kind of just lowkey shook that Sui/Han didn’t win, but I’m not that surprised, honestly. As I stated earlier, I never thought they were the judges favorites and despite winning PCS with the fall in the SP they skated basically a WR skate and still didn’t win the FS or the TSS. Shook. I can find the pros in this situation, as I think it’s a reminder that they can’t afford any mistakes. That mistake (from Cong!!) in the SP cost them at least 5-6 points that could’ve won them the entire event. the fact that they lose the PCS element isn’t something I can think of a solution for, honestly, but like?? like I said, they aren’t the judges favorites (no one I like is :^)). Additionally, being back in the underdog situation might be the firing up they need for the Olympics. They’ve already won in the stadium in Korea :) But they’re showing amazing consistency with their FS, especially with the SBS 3S! They’re still the only pair to crack 80 in the SP (a common feat for them). Also, the GPF doesn’t have the best track record when predicting olympic podiums. Also they have tons of time to prepare for Feb because they most likely won’t go to Chinese nats or 4CC. however, I’m equally just as nervous. Even with a clean FS, they didn’t win TES or PCS. Their streak of being undefeated just got broken meaning that they're not as invincible anymore. They no longer hold the WR (which I hope they get back @ the olympics), and now they’re starting to lose out on PCS which is a big WTF for me, but again, not surprising. There’s talk of the 4S coming back which makes me SO nervous because their track record with the 4S has not been great in the past (witnessed it with my own eyes). Before this comp I thought they could go w/o it and still win, now I’m not so sure, since the judges aren’t as eager to give them the win in the FS as they are for the SP. 

I think the only reason why I’m so shook is because I go so hard for winners. I remember back when C/B were in contention for winning things I got so hyped because I’m so desperate to really root for skaters who actually win things and are liked by the judges (probably due to me liking skating after watching YunaMao). Once S/H started winning EVERYTHING last year it was so wonderful. And the GP series this year with the WR and amazing performances were so great. It felt so good to be a fan of skaters who won all the time and came so far from when I first saw them. And now it’s so strange to see them not win something. Even though I knew they weren’t the favorites, it’s so weird to feel like I’m back in 2016 when S/H got silver so many times, got underscored in PCS, and got ignored and looked over. It’s nostalgic in a way. I’m absolutely stressed for them at the Olympics the most, probably because they’re the only ones that have a real likely chance of winning out of everyone else I stan hard for. And that’s what’s kind of scary; because up until now, they were pretty much being hailed as guaranteed locks. And that’s why I have so many thoughts and why I’m so invested. They’ve been on the most uphill climb I’ve ever followed a skater through and somehow, it still doesn’t feel like it’s reached the peak. They’re still going for 2022 but 4 years is SO MUCH for skating and even looking at the pairs field this quad, there’s been so much changing around in positions. This isn’t at all to say that I’ve ruled them out or lost faith. I’m concerned that others will, but S/H have always been underestimated, (although pretty much universally liked by the public thank god). I think I’m just trying to process their situation going forward. It would be a lot clearer had they won, but I can still see some positives from here. The only thing I’m feeling a bit disheartened about is their PCS gap, and the fact that they don’t have the WR anymore. Had they skated a clean SP, would the have won? If they skated last, would they have won? Every time S/H skated last in major competitions recently they won, and when they skated first in the group they didn’t. IDK it’s so so so important for them to get good start orders for the olympics, that’s what may stress me the most lol. Because I know they can deliver; that’s what they’ve proven over the last year. 

I’ve already written WAY too much about this but I tend to overthink and I’m still processing this situation. What I’m worried about the most is probably if they’ll go for the quad throw. I’m so nervous because they shouldn’t need to have it tbh but then again, if they’re no longer winning while skating clean, then what? How will they get the judges back on their side? Were the judges even on their side in the first place? Am I wrong to be doubting everything right now? I wanted to know how they’d score while skating first in a group, and I can see that the judges still like to leave room for scores coming in later. This makes me so apprehensive because basically it means that S/H really NEED to skate last in the FS at the olympics if they even want to win. They might not even be in the last group for the SP due to their lack of competitions during their hiatus. Skating first is a death sentence, as witnessed at Boston Worlds 2016. It’s also wise for them to most likely skip the team event. They don’t need the extra event when lbr china has no chance of medaling at the team event. I think I’m just shook the most from this because I’m not used to them not winning, and it’s weird to be back in this place again. I’m definitely overthinking this whole thing but I needed some way to process my thoughts! They always seem to be in good spirits after competitions regardless of results, but I could tell they seemed kind of pissed. a disaster! Shibutanis messed up on their twizzles not once, but twice in both the SD and the FS, which honestly does not compute with me. I just don’t get it, they came out so strong in the GP series a la S/H, but somehow just made uncharacteristic mistakes a la S/H. Barely made it by with a bronze, but that’s definitely not how anyone wanted to see them win it. I’m not that worried about Nationals unless they repeat this hot mess performance again. They were so bummed, you could really tell because usually they always just smile and wave regardless of their scores. Not this time. They’ve truly had rotten luck at the GPF maybe they should just skip it next time LOL (don’t think that works in ice dancing but whatever). I hope this was just a fluke competition and they go back to being strong. C/B at least won the FS and the PCS but they still got 3rd overall among the 3 US teams which hella worries me for nationals but they’re not definitely last, I just have no clue what the hell will happen at US nationals and that worries me kind of.

I’m okay with this podium but not with their performances. Shoma losing 1st place and Japan’s streak of GPF men titles with a time violation? A time violation?! Nathan messing up in the FS again? It says something that mens had the most acceptable result for me in this entire event. I’m less invested in the results of the mens because it’s so unpredictable that I have 0 expectations of anyone. That’s what makes it the most easygoing competition for me, but somehow it still managed to be disappointing :^)

This competition must be a new record for the sheer amount of all my favorites bombing or making mistakes. All of them, all at this competition. kings and queens of solidarity I suppose. Usually at least one of my faves pulls through to make the event bearable, but not even a shoma-nathan podium can make up for what a disaster this event was. The optimist in me hopes that this is a good sign for my faves; that they’re letting their mistakes go before the Olys. The other part of me wants to ignore the numbers/placements and just enjoy their skating. The other part of me is worried that their reputation judging/pcs is going to be affected by their performances here. The other part of me is just sad that nobody really pulled through, not even those who I thought were dependable. The final part of me wants to skip this season, and every olympic season that follows from hereon out. Nothing good comes out of an olympic season, not since Maosus retired! I’ll enjoy my break from skating after Japanese nationals, and once the Olympics comes back around, my death will be imminent.
