i think my genuinely most petty turn off in fanfiction is when a clearly american writer uses fahrenheit to describe the temperature. like i can somewhat excuse inches and miles because those do sound better in descriptive sentence flow sometimes (though they're still ridiculous to use in dialogue when the characters aren't from a place that uses those), but i will sometimes instantly click off a fic where a character from any place that isn't the united states of america* says some shit like "it's 90 degrees out". because that means it's almost boiling. you're almost boiling those poor bastards. let them be free. they will die in that heat. just look up celsius conversion OR if you can't be assed/temperature measurement names don't match the setting to just say "it's unbearably hot out" or something instead of going with the one system no one else in the world uses im fucking begging you
*or a usa coded fantasy nation whatever
#🐠#this ALSO goes for when two characters are baking something and you jump out with shit like gallons when THAT IS AN AMERICAN THING#what the fuck is a gallon!#tsp/tbs/cups are fine everyone uses those in baking/cooking but fahrenheit temps+'pint'???? what the fuck is a PINT#this is deeply petty i know but it just happened to me for the 2nd time this week its so joever#you're just outing yourself as an American™ if you do this and its just annoying and breaks immersion thanks for coming to my pet talk
