this was requested by Fysh over on the simscord, and i have wanted to do something like this for almost a year now, so of course i jumped at their suggestion! have 8 new, modest outfits and head coverings for muslim sims, created by @bokchoijo, converted to ts2. have the first part of the modesty collection!

as someone who has grown up in a muslim country (but is not muslim myself) i have always felt sad by the lack of modest clothing options this game has. not everyone wants to wear 987 different crop tops out (though of course, they have the option to!) i really hope this can add more diversity and representation to my own game, and others' 🥰

Calcinidae Bay Lot Tour: the Public Schools

Let's take a closer look at a few of Calcinidae Bay's community lots - its public schooling! This screenshot is actually three lots, with two lots overlapped using the Lot Adjuster. On the left is the high school, on the right is the primary school, and between them is a shared gymnasium and a semi-public oval (sports field).

As always, these lots are based on shell challenges. The high school and primary school are actually shells that were made for me by @hugelunatic as stocking stuffers back in 2022 (I didn't forget about them!) The shell from the gym/oval lot is actually the smaller canteen building, with the gymnasium being auxiliary (because it had to be such a specific size/shape), and that shell is a 4T2 adaptation of LilSimsie's "Yeehaw" Shell Challenge that I grabbed off the gallery.

Starting with the high school:

If you peeked at the original shell, you'll see there was a two-storey 1x1 "column "room" in the middle of the lot, which made me think of a bell/clock tower and inspired me to use these shells for schools. Normally when I adapt a TS4 shell challenge to TS2 I choose the placement & orientation on the lot, but because these lots were made natively in TS2 I decided to keep the lot size & distribution as they were. This gave me a lot of additional space around the main building that was perfect for adding extra amenities like a library.

The ground floor of the high school has an administration area, lockers, mixed bathroom, sick bay, staff room, and two general-use classrooms that can each fit six students.

The teacher's lounge/staff room, and a small display/awards case. I needed something to do with that little triangular pocket, and now it's one of my favourite features. :)

Upstairs is two specialised classrooms - a moderate science lab and an arts room. I would have liked at least a home ec classroom as well, but I guess that'll be reserved for the eventual private school.

The canteen (cafeteria) is a separate demountable building with outdoor seating, some of it under a shade cloth. The library is also a separate building with a small computer bay and a group study area.

Moving on to the primary school, a much older and smaller building with some minor remodeling so the two schools look cohesive:

The inspiration for my gameplay/lots is a mish-mash of different cultural influences, but I play my schools like the standard Australian system; kids start in reception (about age 5) and attend primary school all the way through to year 6 or 7, then go to high school from year 6/7 through to year 12. Separate middle schools are much less common, and this matches with how the game itself handles kid vs. teen education.

I design my lots kind of "representationally", to get the best balance between realism and playability. While I enjoy including some details that don't provide actual gameplay, I don't want to build enormous, cumbersome lots just to achieve a 1:1 scale when my Sims will never actually need that much space. Plus, most shell challenges tend to be smaller, which I like. Hence why this school has only two classrooms, one for junior primary and a more structured classroom for upper primary.

There is a small admin area downstairs. Upstairs is the sick bay and a modest teacher's lounge/staff room.

The primary school doesn't have its own library, but it does have a small separate building that we in Australia would call OSHC - Out of School Hours Care. It's a service parents can book to drop their children off before school starts, or arrange for them to attend after school finishes until they can pick them up. They provide snacks and some edu-tainment activities. Lots of kids also attend OSHC over school holidays.

The primary school canteen/cafeteria is also a separate building. Both school canteens use the University cafeteria stove, so with the right mod students will be able to grab food there. In addition to an outdoor eating area and a small playground, there is a little produce patch between the two buildings where students are taught about horticulture.

And finally, the lot that joins the two schools, the shared gymnasium and Calcinidae Oval.

The canteen/cafeteria itself would generally not be open during school hours. Instead, the school and/or local council would operate it for profit or hire it out to a third party when the oval was being used for local sports teams and other events on weekends, holidays, and after school hours. Right now it's set up for just such a soccer match.

The inside of the "tuckshop". There is a bathroom on the bottom floor accessible from the outside of the building, while the top floor has two changing rooms for students or local teams.

The gymnasium also serves as an assembly hall for students of both schools. I think the teachers would either have a collapsible stage at the far end of the court, or just stand up in the commentator's booth to give the announcements. Underneath the commentator's booth is the equipment storage shed where many a teen couple has probably sneaked off to make out.

The back view of the tuckshop and the carpark shows how this lot overlaps with the primary school. The existing primary school is blocked from Sims walking through it by a combination of real fences and this hidden CC-free invisible fence.

And that's it for this tour! I'm pretty happy with how these lots look, how I utilised the shells, and how they all fit together in the neighbourhood. I want to have more lots overlapping and slotting together like this to give Calcinidae Bay a more seamless, open feel, like the hood really is connected.

So I'm doing a search for more modest/conservative clothing for TS3, for both genders. For Reasons™. Doing searches is....interesting. I'm putting aside that even though I put "sims 3" into the search engine, 90% of the returns are for TS4. That's just getting worse as time goes on. No, my beef is that people seem to have....interesting...ideas about what constitutes modest clothing. As an ex-vangelical fundie who was shoved into the modest dress thing for a time, I'm kind of half amused and half appalled. I can only imagine what it must be like for hijabi simmers who want their game to reflect that as well.

Like, "modest" is apparently a one-piece swimsuit with a front plunge that literally shows the belly button and that looks like the boobs are about to burst out, but it's "modest" because the ass cheeks aren't hanging out? Or it's a men's dress shirt and/or pants that are skin-tight. Or it's a skirt that's loose (a plus!) but barely covers the sim's ass, which is the opposite of modest. Also, one-piece outfits with an exposed midriff is apparently "modest." Like, in what universe? And then there are the long (good!) but skin-tight (not good!) skirts billed as modest. And on and on.

I almost want to yell about false advertising, but on the other hand, I get the feeling that people genuinely don't know what constitutes modest dress, especially in a religious sense. Combined with the search engines thinking I really want Sims 4 stuff when I type in Sims 3, it's just hard to find new stuff for my sims who dress this way. They all end up wearing the same things. *sigh*

I was redoing my entire clothing defaults folder, and there was one af bottom that didn’t have any options that I wanted -  afbottomcasualpreppy So, I made one! Kind of. @rudhira​ helped!

I actually quite like the Bermuda shorts that afbottomcasualpreppy has, but I wanted more versatile shoes. So, I meshed on the Yuxi sneakers that both @deedee-sims​ and @serabiet​ have used. And other creators too! Just some nice, modest shorts with comfy sneaks. The texture is all new - I used 2 different TS4 textures for this. The default that @rudhira​ kindly made for contains a white, black and then 2 denim options. However, the custom DL contains 2 more denim options.

A teen and elder conversion are in the works! But I have worked with the EF mesh a good 40 times and it’s just not working, so it will be released some other day.

The Anamnesis Family:

Ember, a successful woman in her 20s, lives in her childhood home. She works in the investor branch and is popular with everyone she meets. However, buried beneath there are lingering feelings for her past sweetheart, Anthony. His whereabouts are unknown, leaving Ember with a choice to make. Will she search for him, or should she allow herself to be open to new experiences and relationships?

The Dichotomy Family:

Benjamin's parents, Joshua and Lucy, are devoted to their faith and believe in upholding longstanding religious traditions. Ashley, a stay-at-home mom, feels lonely while her husband, Arnold, is too busy with work to connect with the family. Their imaginative daughter, Danna, longs for a friend and considers sharing her hobbies with their neighbor, Luther. Next door, Emmanuel, an artist, is excited about her second child but focused on her creative work. Her husband, Adam, struggles with financial pressures while balancing work and family life, and their son, Luther, enjoys his hobbies and new friends.

This save file is small in terms of the number of families and townies. However, I made sure that every family, name, and location have enough details and meanings to capture the story of the creator consciousness from the lore. You choose how everything will unfold in this manifestation world.

One day I will publish a post in which I will tell the whole story behind this lore and how interesting and deep it can get (This can work in any Sims game). I hope you'll keep an eye out for that. Thank you for reading! If you try out my save file, I would be so happy and grateful.

it just blows how little most cultures are represented in ts4 like well ok it wasnt until four years later that they added hijabs to the game and theres still only three styles and hardly ANY modest clothing to go with them. theres so many christian centered traditions in the seasons pack and like maybe one or two for other religious holidays? it was only this year when they added challah and matzah ball soup LOL. they only just added double braids and SOME navajo names into the randomizer. i dont even want to get into the whole fucking thing with the skin tones again but if your life sim game ships out with like 10 MAX dark skin tones and they are all blotchy and ashy. and you dont fix it for literal years AND ONLY because one of your white game changers said something.... And still no kippah

Lookbook: Ripped Denim x Long Cardi

A soft, red velvet crop-top paired with a high-waisted, distressed and destroyed jeans. A long knitted cardigan with colorful stripes is the star of the outfit and keeps you as modest and warm as you like to be. Throw on some olive-green canvas shoes and you look stylish but comfy at the same time. The perfect early-spring outfit with a bit of skin exposure.

there’s already not a lot of good hijabi alpha cc for ts4 and it doesn’t help that i basically had to completely recreate abjid because the hijab hair cc i got (since it makes outfits and work outfits easier for keeping modesty) didn’t work since Abjid’s settings were a “male” sim with feminine clothing.

while ts4 is nice in having like, gender options of like being able to set clothing preference/physical frame/pregnancy options, it does suck that you still have to choose male or female, even if you change those settings. Because the male/female choice decided pronouns because the only pronouns are he or she. which fucking sucks.

ALSO

sims 4 has like 7 billion expansion packs and items so why is modest outfits so hard to make, and why are there only 1 regular hijab option and 1 sports hijab.

tbh you’re better off with MTM cuz the TS4 barbie body is so badly designed and has permanent flat feet which limits options for redressing....

Alpen Girl Set (Public Sep 9)

My inspo for this is "Heidi, Girl of the Alps". I only know the Japanese animation of the story. Although my memories were jumbled with another folktales haha. But anyways, available for public in September 9th!
