As Tony began to recover from his shock, his mind ground back into gear and began sorting through Steve’s words at its usual lightning-fast pace. Tony knew him, maybe more than he’d ever expected to. He knew when Steve was excited, or pissed off, or - most relevantly - scrambling to cover up a mistake. 

Throughout Steve’s little spiel, he listened silently. Sure, he knew that the Avengers were important to Steve. He was a good leader, and good leaders cared about the people under their charge. And talking about Tony’s kamikaze-esque techniques - been there, done that, blah blah blah.

But the idea that Steve cared about his safety that much? More than saving the day and beating the bad guy? That...that was new, and uncomfortably...feelings-related. Tony didn’t do feelings, as a general rule. In fact, Tony preferred to avoid feelings at all costs. 

‘Wow. Careful there, Cap, much more and I won’t be able to fit through doors.’ It was spoken flippantly, but even to Tony the nonchalance rang false. So he gave up the act...though he still couldn’t think about someone caring about him like that. Especially not Steve Rogers. 

‘Steve. We’re Avengers,’ he said, pacing slowly closer. ‘We’re never going to be safe. Funnily enough, workplace injuries are sort of an expectation in the hero profession.’ Pausing, he tapped his fingers against his thigh. ‘But you...don’t have to worry about me. I’m not stupid, you know.’ He flashed a grin. ‘And I have J.A.R.V.I.S. to help me out, if you’re worried about maturity. He’s pretty much the artificial embodiment of a mother hen.’

He gives a small, maybe slightly smug smile, tilting his head to the side in a wordless statement. Yeah, Quill’s totally into it. And Tony knows it. But his emphatic denial is, admittedly, pretty amusing, and Tony’s willing to play along a little. ‘I’m afraid so. But hey, it’s not the worst thing which could happen - it’s not as if it’s fatal, or related in any way to tentacles, chastity or alien goo. Right?’
