TS!Underswap Speculation
(Here we are! The TS theory! Apologies for the delay. I’ve been busy lately and haven’t been feeling up to it.)
So, for anyone who hasn’t played the demo, this contains spoilers, so I highly recommend you go play the demo or watch a playthrough to catch up (I recommend Merg’s cause, well, I’m biased.)Â
Now, let’s get speculating.
Now, let’s take a look at this scene in particular. (This was a poorly taken screenshot of Merg’s playthrough.) Now, as anyone who’s played the demo knows, in this scene, when you try to select “Can I stay here?”, it changes to “Where is the exit?”. And once you selected the option, Asgore reacts, and then another option appears, and when you try to select it, it changes again. This happens a couple of times, finally ending with the final option saying “Help me”, which you select. And this got a lot of people speculating. Who was changing the choices? My answer to that? You. You, as the player, through your influence, are changing Chara’s choices. But why and how? I’m going to explain here.
But first, let’s talk about a little game called..Deltarune. Toby Fox’s latest game. You’ll see how this is relevant in a bit. Now, let’s talk about the epilogue where you’re wandering around town in particular. (Spoilers for Deltarune ahead.) In the town epilogue, Kris..seems to have behaved differently before than they’re behaving now. Noelle’s and Rudy’s dialogue both suggest that Kris is behaving..differently than normal, with Noelle saying that they’re not this talkative. And, in the hospital, you’ll notice that all you get when you play the piano is a dissonant, loud plunk, when the nurse says Kris’ piano-playing is beautiful. Something has changed them, or rather, someone has changed them. It’s us. And how do we know this? Well, Undyne and Sans’ interactions. Let’s talk about the latter first. When you first meet Sans, there are two options to greet him with. “Great to see you again!” and “Who the hell are you?”. But, here’s the thing. Kris and Sans haven’t met. Sans’ reaction says as much. So, then, why are we able to say “Great to see you again!”? The player. The game was clearly recommended to those who had completed Undertale. And, so, as the player, if we’ve completed Undertale, we’d probably be happy about seeing Sans again because he was one of the friends we got in the Pacifist ending. And Undyne’s interaction just provides more evidence. There, we’re able to bring up Alphys, even though Undyne doesn’t know who that is here. Why? Because we remember Undyne and Alphys’ relationship from the original Undertale. That’s how we’re able to bring it up. We’ve changed Kris’ behavior and in a sense, we’ve changed the choices they’re able to make. Just like with Chara.
Now, back to TS!Underswap. Notice what the choices change to. They change from wanting to stay to having to go. Having to leave and progress. In the original Undertale, we needed to leave and progress from Toriel’s house to continue playing. And here? It’s the same. Through our influence, we force Chara to leave, because we can’t progress otherwise. Just like with Kris, we have a grasp on their behavior and choices. Now, that’s just my interpretation. I could be completely wrong, but I just wanted to put this out there. I hope you enjoyed reading this theory. Go play TS!Underswap if you haven’t yet, and have a nice day.
