CrystalClan Part 11
Being Hoppaw is suffering.
11th Leaf-fall
Hoppaw, seeking more knowlege to keep the cats he cares about safe, has taken to trying to learn as much as he can about everything. His uncle, Hazelholly knows a lot about the far reaches of all the clans' territory, having traversed far and wide on his search for Berrylight. The two take to leaving camp, somewhat unannounced. Hazelholly, showing Hoppaw what he knows. It's maybe a bit of a midlife crises for Hazelholly, who kind of misses his wandering days even though he'd gotten everything he'd ever wanted. Hoppaw is kind of glad to have time outside of camp, and learning from someone who isn't Snapheavy, who tries a bit too hard to be kind and supportive to Hoppaw, who just doesn't feel like he deserves that at the end of the day.
Slopekit and Tuftkit are born to Lightstrike and Badgerclaw. Making quite a crowded nursery.
Via jumps in to save Wingpaw from a Hawk. She's not really sure why she felt so compelled to save the apprentice. But she did, surprising everyone, including herself. Wingpaw is very grateful, as is Emberdawn, who veiws Wingpaw as her kin. She starts hunting for Via, and hanging around to see what she can do. They don't have the healthyest of dynamics, as Via seems to take advantage of her status of savoir of Wingpaw, and often berates Emberdawn for letting her fall into such danger. Emberdawn, as always, seems to take it in stride, though Drizzelpounce expresses some concern over the dynamic, and Emberdawn's tendancy to overwork herself.
One night, when Hazelholly and Hoppaw are out on an adventure patrol, a very heavy storm moves in. The rain makes the visibility extremely poor, and the two have a pretty hard time trying to make their way back to camp, choosing to shelter in a burrow that's unconnected to the camp tunnels. However, the burrow that was previously unoccupied is now the home of a very enraged fox. The two try to take on the fox, but the battle goes poorly, the damp ground and suprise make things more difficult, Hazelholly calls for them to run, and Hoppaw does. Making it most of the way back to camp before realizing Hazelholly isn't with him. He runs back to try to find him, save him, but it's too late, and he finds Hazelholly dead near the fox den. He drags his uncle's body back to camp. Racoonsnout and Ridgetalon are shocked and hearkbroken. But Berrylight is absolutely inconsolable.
Jumpeyes is found dead near the edges of CrystalClan territory after having left late at night to follow a vision, something she often did. Vineshell, who would usually go with her, was recovering from heart exhaustion. She was seemingly killed by a fox, and there are deep gashes in her pelt, and rusty red fur in her claws. However, the medicine cat, Orange, believes it was a cat that killed her. Vineshell is deeply distraught, trying to take some kind of solace in the hope that she'll see Jumpeyes in StarClan one day... but the death of her mate, has shaken her faith.
Goldcreek and Apricot learn that a Medicine Cat from one of the the other clans in the area is being exiled for "allowing the leaders kits to die". In reality he had done everything he could, but the kits still died, the grieving leader had to blame someone. In need of extra paws to care for the growing clan, they convince Thornstar to take him in. Thornstar goes to the ClawClan boarder with Lightpelt, Drizzelpounce, Mintfoot, Emberdawn and Wingpaw, to escort their new medicine cat, Grousepelt. It's a controversial move, as it's probably not going to go over well with the other clans, but Thornstar cannot turn away an unfairly exiled cat...
A moon with the clan, and Grousepelt begins to tell others that they are not a tom, but a she-cat. Thornstar is very happy that they did take the young medicine cat in, and are happy she feels safe enough to be herself.
Budmoss announces she'll be having kits with Leaftalon. Timing the announcement so that there's no chance she'll wind up having to be nurserymate's with her mother, Ripplestripe. Who is very annoyed Budmoss didn't see fit to tell her first before announcing it to the clan.
Echopaw is apprenticed to Midnightheart, Hornetpaw to Tulipnose, and Flutterpaw to Stonewhisker. Tulipnose and Stonewhisker are quite happy to train two siblings and get to spend some quality sibling time together themselves. Hoppaw take a bit of solace to see the kits that were most effected by the hornet storm have grown up to be energetic new apprentices.
Spottedmint and Grousepelt find a dying parent with two dead kits and one still alive kit. The parent, who's name is Tuft dies very soon after they get there, but manages to tell them of a cat named Burn, who had so grievously injured them. The patrol take the one remaining kit, Lily, to the Clan, promising Tuft they will keep her safe.
Hopleaf is made a warrior. He solemly vows to keep his clan mates safe no matter the cost.
On a patrol with his former mentor, Snapheavy, and some others, they come across some twolegs, one of them grabs Chasingturtle. But Hopleaf leaps in to distract them. Unfortunately he is grabbed instead and taken away by the twolegs. His brother takes the news pretty hard, feeling a lot of regret at never resolving their strained relationship, and he tries to ask StarClan for advice, but they aren't very forthcomming. Glowberry is deeply depressed, and has a hard time looking after Spiderkit, leading to her developing kittencough. Marigoldpaw steps in to care for her, as Cricketspeck tries to comfort Glowberry. Peathawk skulks off to be by herself, not wanting others to know just how upset she is. She had a complicated relationship with Hopleaf. They didn't really get along, but she often felt he was the only cat who really "got" her. And now she feels lonelier than ever.
12th Leafbare
Leafbare enters with an air of unpredictability. Freezing rain and snow fade into days balmy enough to be Newleaf, and back to fridged nights.
Lilykit has some difficulties adjusting to clan life, and life without Tuft. She winds up lashing out at her nurseymates a lot as a result.
A cat named Sandy specifically comes and asks to join the clan. He says he isn't going to change his name, but he does, in fact, change it to Sandycurl. He also immediately "asks Thornstar if he can retire." He's a great kitsitter, he has a mustache, he used to live in a barn. What a guy.
Rosypelt and Thornstar are out on a walk, when the celling of the tunnel falls in on top of them. Thornstar manages to dig his way out, loosing a life in the process, but isn't able to get Rosypelt out in time. He is crushed ((emotionally this time)). As are many in the clan, Berrylight, Fringepelt, Forestpool, Lightpelt, Dusktooth, and all their children, all the cats Rosypelt had mentored. Shineclaw, Spottedmint, Ridgetalon and Racoonsnout, cats who'd founded the clan with her. All of them mourn and celebrate Rosypelt.
Budmoss and Leaftalon welcome their two kits into the world, Shimmerkit, and Rosekit, whome they name after Leaftalon's beloved grandmother.
Thornstar is, understandably, not dealing with his grief very gracefully. He's become deeply deeply resentful of the leadership role, of the time it robbed away from him that he could have spent with Rosypelt. That resentment had long ago spilled onto Sharpstar, and now it's being cast over all of StarClan. He's relying on Lightpelt quite a bit, and many, including Lightpelt, suspect he will (try to) retire soon.
Mintfoot, tries to get her sister to open up, and tries to comfort her through her problems. Now that shes older, Mintfoot has seen that a lot of the siblings in the clan, especially older ones like Tulipnose Stonewhisker and Goldcreek, dont have strained uncomfortable relationships, like she and Peathawk seem to have always had. They go hunting together, but Peathawk pretty much isn't having it, especially after Mintfoot starts really going on about StarClan. And she runs off after Mintfoot brings up their mother's position in the clan. She runs into a fox with a pretty juicy kill, and in a fit of self-destructive determination to prove herself, attacks it. Mintfoot arrives to back her up, but not before Peathawk's tail is mangled.
Basilpaw is apprenticed to Quitefoot, she seems to have an easier time than most following the tom's abbreviated manner of speech. Her sister, Brackenpaw is apprenticed to Lightpelt, and seems to be ready to do what she can to support the defacto leader of CrystalClan.
A few weeks later Lilypaw is apprenticed to Carpleg, who seems to immediately have a strong influence on the young cat, steering her in a far more compassionate direction. Silkpaw is apprenticed to Via, at the heavy suggestion of his parents, Ripplestripe and Orange. He doesn't grow past his unpleasant nature, remaining immature, and a bit of a bully.
Drizzelpounce, Emberdawn, and Mintfoot save a cat named Streamstripe from a dog. He's fleeing from a tyranical group of rouges. He joins the clan with stories of the leader of the group. A cat with abnormally long claws named Burn. Emberdawn puts this description together with the cat that had killed Lilypaw's parent, and possibly the cat Wingpaw had been able to only vaguely mention, who had been instrumental in the battle that had killed off the clan her and her mother had come from. She tries to keep this from Wingpaw, to not traumatize her further, but does tell Thornstar. Who just says there isn't much he can/wants to do with the information. Kind of annoyed at this she does talk about it with Via, whome she's come to trust, or at least, value the opinion of. Via, of course, tells Orange about it, who begins dream-walking in search of this cat, curious of their possible connection to Tangle.
Pinefreckle and his apprentice Shrewpaw are found dead near the two-leg's giant towers on the edge of the territory. It's pretty clear they were killed by cats. Honeypaw is quite shaken by her brother's death, and she becomes far less confident.
Chasingegg decides to retire, happy that she's able to retire inside a clan, but she can't help but wish she'd reached this milestone inside her original home clan.
Bassflip is made a warrior, vowing to make her father, Hazelholly, proud as a warrior. Honeyclaw is made a warrior at the same time, and can barely stammer out a similar sentiment regarding her brother, Shrewpaw.
Spiderpaw felt early on that the path of a warrior wasn't for her, and though she greatly respects her brother, Marigoldpaw, she knows she's not cut out for the life of a medicine cat either. And so she decides to train under Marbletail as a mediator. Silkpaw Is pretty disappointed the two of them won't train together, but still often visits her.
While on a patrol with Lightpelt, Brackenpaw and Basilpaw, Quitefoot finds an burrow with signs of a wolverine. He warns his apprentice to stay back, though the burrow seems to be empty. However the ground collapses underneith his feet and he falls into the tunnels below, where a wolverine is indeed waiting. There isn't much the patrol can do, though Basilpaw tries desperately to save him.
Basilpaw is reapprenticed to Mintfoot, who does her best to comfort the young cat. Peathawk fully starts ignoring her sister after this, unable to take the jealousy.
