expanding on my Trapping Thoughts. this probably won't be super long but hey
-Really want to fuck someone over? you could hook up an observer with tnt minecarts to one of their furnaces, particularly if said furnaces are nestled in the wall. can be done so long as one face of the furnace is covered by a block tho (i.e. the bottom). or you could go into their storage, find a chest they use often, and wire up a comparator so that if they take stuff out, it blows them up. rewire their door if they have a redstone one. sculk sensors could easily be used to Absolutely fuck someone over in multiple ways. pitfall trap (desert) landscape trap (anywhere). hell you don't even have to hide them super well if you put a more obvious trap laying around unless they're especially cautious. dripstone traps seem pretty strong too (<- hasn't experimented with them yet). also y'all remember that massive TNT cannon that mumbo made? yeah those can blow holes through 3-thick iron walls iirc. basically for this category it's particularly useful if it's an area the person trusts (& again this is like. You Want Them Dead & you want to make absolutely sure there's collateral damage. these are not prank traps bc once they've been set off they'll probably be...pretty instantaneous)
-Want to maybe kill them but it's OK if they live? most of that on a smaller scale, plus hidden potion launchers (not that hard to make it takes like one piston) & silverfish traps (these are old but i tested it and yes they're still semi-doable. good luck getting it set up anywhere notable but the mechanic still works fine. they're also a very effective lag trap if done correctly). ore pressure plate traps (down here bc observers are more effective, these are...basically what you used before observers became a thing. there's a chance for mined ore to fall down before you can grab it, and set off a wood pressure plate. particularly effective with coal i've noticed). arrow traps fall into this category i'd say (unless they're dipped arrows. bc arrows in instant harming are...yeah they sure Are)
-Sending a message (preferably without death unless the person fumbles) is pretty easy tbh. very small pitfall traps, maybe with cobweb at the bottom. weak potion dispensers, weak arrow traps, even just falling gravel traps yknow. no biggie. message is also probably more effective the scarier the trap is at face value, even if at second glance it's not that bad.
-With pranks the world is your oyster. want to spook someone? ignite TNT and drop it in water, it'll still go boom but won't do any damage. etc etc etc tbh grian has a few videos on pranks
OK i'm gonna. whoo boy. i'm gonna put Components under the cut bc this is already long but i'm extremely. fond of this specific topic. so
components yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. most of em have 2-3 depending on how serious the trap is
1: trigger 2: the result 3, optional: prevention from escaping/evading the trap
Examples for 1: observers, comparators, hopper clocks, sculk sensors (new! and very scary), normal redstone components such as buttons, tripwires, pressure plates, etc. also i gotta mention "redstone torch on the back of a block you'd like to break"
Examples for 2: Death via explosion, destruction via explosion, pitfall, anvil/dripstone drop, potions, mob release, arrows, really any number of ways to mess with/harm a player or environment
Examples for 3: gravel drop in doorways, block popups, cobweb (less effective), two-step traps (difficult to pull off properly but can be good to circumvent totem usage)
hello if you read to the end. thank you for that. i have many thoughts on traps in this game & the ways in which they can be used. this isn't even all of your possibilities - again, you can get very creative with traps and pranks and trying to list out all the various ways you could do one would take me at least another 2 hours
