The 65th BFI London Film Festival is back with a world premiere

Back to to reality, the BFI London Film Festival has announced his opening Gala as Jeymes Samuel’s The Harder They Fall, new school western starring Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz, Delroy Lindo, LaKeith Stanfield, Danielle Deadwyler, Edi Gathegi, R.J. Cyler, Damon Wayans Jr, Deon Cole with Regina King and Idris Elba.

The film will receive its world premiere on Wednesday 6 October at LFF gala venue the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, with Samuel expected to attend along with key cast including Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz, Regina King and Idris Elba.

Synopsis:

When outlaw Nat Love (Majors) discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Elba) is being released from prison, he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school western includes his former love Stagecoach Mary, his right- and left-hand men – hot-tempered Bill Pickett and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth – and a surprising adversary-turned-ally. Rufus Buck has his own fearsome crew, including “Treacherous” Trudy Smith and Cherokee Bill, and they are not a group that knows how to lose.

The BFI London Film Festival is also pleased to announce that there will be simultaneous preview screenings of The Harder They Fall taking place at cinemas across the UK. The film will debut on Netflix on 3 November following a theatrical release in UK cinemas.

New York Films Head to Park City for Sundance Film Festival

Nineteen films and two pilots that participated in the New York State Film Tax Credit Program will be screened next month at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Since 1985, hundreds of films launched at Sundance—one of the world’s largest film festivals—have gained critical recognition, received commercial distribution and reached global audiences eager for fresh perspectives and new voices.   Films that shoot or do post-production work in New York have traditionally been well-represented at Sundance, set for Jan. 18-28 in Park City, Utah. In addition to their Sundance recognition, this year’s crop of New York films also had an impressive economic impact while they were in production and post production, spending an estimated $38 million in New York and creating an estimated 2,448 hires.

New York’s incentive program, designed to strengthen the state’s film production and post-production industries, is one of the main reasons filmmakers choose to film here.   Houston King, producer of Hearts Beat Loud, which will premiere at Sundance, offered an example. "From the inception of Hearts Beat Loud, we wanted to highlight one of our favorite NYC neighborhoods - Red Hook, Brooklyn.  Without New York State’s incentive we very likely would have been forced to shoot the film in another state and changed the location of our story,” King said. “The incentive was key to giving our investors comfort that shooting in NYC was the right thing for their investment and the film."

How tolerant is tolerance

(Note: We’re repeating this post for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It originally appeared on the blog on Sept. 9, 2016.)

Q: The word “tolerance” seems to suggest something at least one step short of acceptance. To me, it carries the connotation of a superior agreeing not to actively work against someone clearly not regarded as an equal. Has the meaning changed or am I simply a curmudgeonly stickler or could both be true?

A: Most standard dictionaries define “tolerance” as accepting beliefs or behavior that one may not agree with or approve of. In other words, putting up with them.

This is, as you say, at least a step short of acceptance in the usual sense. It also reflects the Latin origin of the word. English borrowed “tolerance” in the 15th century from French, but the ultimate source is the Latin tolerāre (to bear with or endure).

Is “tolerance,” you ask, evolving in English? Perhaps.

We were recently driving behind a car with a bumper sticker displaying “tolerance” spelled out with a cross, a peace symbol, a star of David, a star and crescent, and other images.

The driver of that car apparently sees “tolerance” as something like respect or consideration for the views of others.

In fact, we’ve seen many examples of the word used that way, including this one from a speech by Trudy E. Hall, the former head of school at the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY:

“What is tolerance? Tolerance is the acceptance and celebration of the full range of emotions, learning preferences, political opinions, and lifestyles of those in community.”

However, we could find only one standard dictionary with such a definition. The entry for “tolerance” in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (5th ed.) has this as its primary sense: “The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.”

When “tolerance” showed up in English writing in the early 15th century, it meant “the action or practice of enduring or sustaining pain or hardship; the power or capacity of enduring; endurance,” according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

The OED describes that sense as obsolete, but similar senses survive today, such as in “tolerance” to a toxin or an allergen or the side effects of a drug.

The dictionary’s earliest citation for “tolerance” is from Troy Boke (1412–20), John Lydgate’s Middle English poem about the rise and fall of Troy:

“For as to a fole it is pertynent / To schewe his foly, riȝt so convenient / Is to þe wyse, softly, with suffraunce, / In al his port to haue tolleraunce” (“For as a fool plainly shows his folly, the wise man, for his part, shows gentle sufferance and tolerance”). We’ve expanded the OED citation to add context.

Similarly, “tolerate” meant to endure or sustain pain or hardship, and “toleration” meant the enduring of evil or suffering, when the two words showed up in the same book in the early 16th century.

Here are the two relevant Oxford citations from the The Boke Named the Gouernour, a 1531 treatise on how to train statesmen, by the English diplomat Thomas Elyot:

“There is also moderation in tolleration of fortune of euerye sorte: whiche of Tulli is called equabilite.” (“Tulli” refers to the Roman orator Marcus Tullius Cicero.)

In the 16th century, the verb “tolerate” and the noun “toleration” took on the sense of putting up with something that’s not actually approved, as in these OED citations.

“He can … be none other rekened but a playne heretyque … whome to tolerate so longe doth sometyme lytle good.” (From Debellation of Salem and Bizance, 1533, a theological polemic by Thomas More.)

“The remission of former sinnes in the toleration of God.” (From the Rheims New Testament of 1582.)

When the adjective “tolerant” appeared in the 18th century, it referred to bearing with something. The OED’s earliest example is from a 1784 sermon at the University of Oxford by Joseph White, an Anglican minister and scholar of Middle Eastern languages:

“His [Gibbon’s] eagerness to throw a veil over the deformities of the Heathen theology, to decorate with all the splendor of panegyric the tolerant spirit of its votaries.”

Over the years, “tolerance” and company have taken on various other meanings, such as referring to variation from a standard (“The part was made to a tolerance of one thousandth of an inch”) or the decrease in a drug’s effectiveness after prolonged use (“The body builds up a tolerance to allergy medications”).

What does the sense of “tolerance” you’re asking about mean today?

The online Cambridge Dictionary defines it as “willingness to accept beliefs that are different from your own, although you might not agree with or approve of them.” The dictionary gives this example: “This period in history is not noted for its religious tolerance.”

Cambridge has similar definitions for “tolerate,” “toleration,” and “tolerant.”

However, some scholars argue that “tolerance” is a less judgmental term than “toleration.”

In “Tolerance or Toleration? How to Deal with Religious Conflicts in Europe,” an Aug. 12, 2010, paper on the Social Science Research Network, Lorenzo Zucca says that “non-moralizing tolerance should be distinguished from moralizing toleration and should be understood as the human disposition to cope with diversity in a changing environment.”

And Andrew R. Murphy, in “Tolerance, Toleration, and the Liberal Tradition,” a 1997 article in the journal Polity, sees “tolerance” as a more personal term than “toleration.”

“We can improve our understanding by defining ‘toleration’ as a set of social and political practices and ‘tolerance’ as a set of attitudes,” he writes.

In a June 2, 2008, post on his blog, the linguist David Crystal says “tolerance” is a more positive term than “toleration.”

“Tolerance has more positive connotations (a desire to accept) than toleration, which can mean ‘we have to put up with this,’ ” he writes. “Compare the phrase religious tolerance with religious toleration. The country which practises the former is more likely to be enthusiastically supporting religious diversity than the latter.”

Of the two terms, “tolerance” is far more popular today, but “toleration” was more common in the 19th and early 20th centuries, according to a search with Google’s Ngram viewer.

So language changes! And we wouldn’t be surprised if other standard dictionaries eventually follow American Heritage’s lead and define “tolerance” less judgmentally than “toleration.”

Note: The reader who asked this question later reminded us of Tom Lehrer’s satirical 1965 song about tolerance, “National Brotherhood Week.” It seems an appropriate accompaniment to this political season.

Jazz journalist Lara Pellegrinelli’s recent article Women in Jazz: Blues and The Objectifying Truth (2017), commiserated on the marginalization of women musicians in the Jazz/Blues genre, stating that the cultural assumption is that women are merely the passive vessels for male sounds (Pellegrinelli, 2017).

In response to Pellegrinelli, Terri Lynn Carrington said: When I started teaching and hearing the stories of the young women at the college, . . . I realized just because my experience was not the same as theirs, I am a part of this community and have to work toward or fight for change in any possible way that I can.  I feel great ownership in this art form and know that I belong here, and want my female students to feel the same way.

In a Huffington Post article, Carrington wrote, “On issues of racism and sexism, there can be impatience from progressives, expecting that after all this time everyone should just know better and stand on the correct side of consciousness” (Carrington, 2017).  She continued with, “feminizing or masculinizing music can be counter-productive. The studying, composing, and performing of music should be gender neutral, and I think the greatest musicians are musically ‘gender fluid’.”

I do not agree with Carrington’s statement because I have found few Jazz musicians, and certainly even fewer Classical musicians, who are willing to push forward music composed by women musicians.  My fortune was that Freddie Hubbard recorded my composition Sweet Return in 1983 on Atlantic Records.  Even though his half-German wife, the publisher, did everything in her power to stop the progress of this album because she felt there was something romantic between Freddie and me, which there was not, that composition made it into the Freddie Hubbard Song Book, much to my surprise.  Since then, I have had no other opportunities to get my music performed or recorded by any gender fluid musician, even though I have gifted several male musicians, band leaders, and arrangers with my song book.

In Black Nationalism and the Revolution in Music (1970), Frank Kofsky expounded on the words of Professor Archie Shepp, an articulate spokesperson for African-Americans. Shepp said, “the United States is culturally backward because white Americans have been unwilling to give credit to African-Americans as innovators of jazz, which he refers to as American realty – total reality.”  Shepp contends that whites “think they have a right to jazz instead of being grateful for jazz as a gift that the Negro has given.”  He said even white Americans in the jazz world “deny that jazz is first and foremost a black art created and nurtured by black people in this country out of the wealth of their historical experience” (Cartwright, 2009, p. 56).

For three centuries or more, white men have used the physical and cultural production of Africans in America to enrich themselves and their families while white women reaped the benefits in silence. White men raped African women, continually, producing a whole new group of people who were sold regardless of their relationship to their white fathers. The transition from cotton, tobacco, and sugar cane to jazz and blues as a money-making venture was as smooth as Smooth Jazz! Festivals and clubs around the world raked in millions of dollars while disowning the very people that the music came from. White musicians and educators dot the halls of conservatories and universities where jazz is taught by rote just like the classical music that issued from European concert halls.

Now, this – white women are complaining that they are marginalized in the world of Jazz. What a surprise. These same white women and their foremothers never found it odd that the music that spoke of freedom for Africans enslaved in America has become the popular music of today, without the input of African musicians.  A survey of jazz educators will result in a very low number of African professors at universities with Jazz Departments.  Professor Archie Shepp at Amherst, Dr. Larry Ridley at Rutgers, Dr. Karlton Hester at UCLA San Diego, Dr. Linda Williams at Southern University, and the handful of African-descent professors at Berklee – Terri Lynn Carrington, Patrice Rushen, and the late Geri Allen do not comprise a long list of instructors that teach the music that actually came out of their communities.

Do white people have a right to perform and teach Jazz and Blues music? This question is moot since white people believe they have a right to appropriate EVERYTHING FROM EVERYBODY and that no one should ever say anything about it in the negative.  Well, my book A History of African-American Jazz and Blues (Cartwright, 2009) discusses how The Music was appropriated, packaged, commercialized, and serendipitously stolen from its originators.  Besides the theft of the publishing royalties of great composers like Duke Ellington by publishers like Irving Mills, who managed Duke’s band for 13 years because African musicians could not belong to ASCAP or manage themselves outside of TOBA, Jazz and Blues musicians of African-descent were exploited in every way possible.

Of course, like cotton, tobacco, and sugar cane crops, Jazz and Blues were new crops that white men felt entitled to exploit to their personal benefit.  Musicians of African descent had no choice because they were barred from owning anything that they produced in the United States. Most prolific musicians died pennilessly and their families rarely benefitted from their cultural production. The following excerpt attests to that fact.

The financial pressures were exacerbated by another familiar pressure which had afflicted jazz musicians right from the start of the music – their reliance on the largely white businessmen who ran the clubs, record companies, management and booking agencies, and, most significantly, music publishing. The shaving of bands’ fees by clubowners and agents, and the practice of managers and agents adding their names to the publishing rights of tunes – and thereby claiming a share of their often lucrative proceeds – had begun early in jazz (Duke Ellington’s manager, Irving Mills, is a famous example, and while Ellington himself was never slow to claim a co-credit on works instigated by his sidemen, at least he had a musical hand in them) and, according to Dizzy, had grown no better by the time of the bebop era.

People with enough bucks and foresight to invest in bebop made some money. I mean more than just a little bit. All the big money went to the guys who owned the music, not to the guys who played it. The businessmen made much more than the musicians, because without the money to invest in producing their own music, and sometimes managing poorly what they earned, the modern jazz musicians fell victim to the forces of the market. Somehow, the jazz businessman always became the owner and got back more than his fair share, usually at the player’s expense. More was stolen from us during the bebop era than in the entire history of jazz . . . (Mathieson, 1999).

So, for white women to declare that they are barred, unfairly, from making a living in the Jazz scene is ludicrous.  White men have maintained control over the cultural production of Africans and they have no intention of relinquishing that control.  The rub is that African men will embrace white women musicians far more readily than they will women of African descent with a few exceptions like Dexter Gordon and Melba Liston.  However, Regina Carter and Teri Lynn Carrington managed to eke out a place in The Music for themselves and their art.

But most women of African descent who appeared on the Jazz scene, until recently, were shoved in a corner, rarely to be heard from.  Some of the most profound of those women were Vi Redd, Jeannie Cheatham, Dorothy Donegan, and Trudy Pitts.  Other talented musicians, like Shirley Scott and Hazel Scott, found favor because they had notable husbands – Shirley and Stanley Turrentine and Hazel and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.  Today, Mimi Jones, Shirazette Tinnin, Lakecia Benjamin, Camille Thurman, Jazmin Ghent, Gail Jhonson, Karen Briggs, and Esperanza Spaulding are making some headway.

Meanwhile, white women are courted by musicians of African descent with valor and pleasure.  For instance, Christian McBride partnered with Diana Krall and Prince endorsed Candy Dulfer (and the two white women in his band).  Perhaps, white women can pay to gain credibility by recording and performing with African-American musicians, while women of African descent cannot make that monetary layout.

As far as sexual harassment is concerned, what is it that white women do not understand about the sexual energy of white men who raped African women during slavery, while their white wives languished in plantation mansions?  Today, white men are being called out in great numbers for sexually harassing women in the workplace.  This is their modus operandi.  Is that to say that African men do not rape and sexually harass?  Heaven’s no.  It is the nature of man to hunt women like prey.

My career as a Jazz/Blues vocalist and composer spanned 50 years.  I remember several instances when I was targeted by male musicians.  However, I was able to extricate myself from the situation or rationalize why that happened.  One white man told me to take my clothing off.  When I refused, he told me I would never be anything but a secretary.  I asked him to call me a cab and went on to have a charmed career, performing in 20 countries on five continents, without ever taking my clothes off for one single opportunity to perform or record.

Maybe I am a very strong woman with principles that do not allow me to cave into the taunting of males.  One of my band members suggested that I engage in fellatio with him in a closet at a New Years’ Eve gig that I hired him for.  I did not speak to him for two years after that and I never hired him again.  Women have recourse.  Sniveling about sexual harassment without speaking out about it means nothing.  It’s a man’s world only because women allow it to be that.

Women fail to create camaraderie amongst themselves.  For 10 years, I have been the director of a non-profit organization that promotes and advocates for women musicians.  It is like pulling teeth to get women to support this organization.  They think that supporting Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. detracts from who they are.  Women are not joiners or supporters unless they think they will get something from an organization.  They expect me to be their agent, to get them gigs, to promote them even though they refuse to pay $50 dues per year.  That’s insane.

I spent the last six years writing my dissertation Women in Jazz: Music Publishing and Marketing. My research showed that women lack sufficient business skills to succeed in the monstrously competitive world of Jazz.  Most women musicians resign themselves to teaching rather than concentrating on branding, networking, teamwork, negotiation, and accounting.  Few are adept at writing grant proposals to win financial awards to produce and perform original music.

Then, there are those that know my organization exists but minimalize it because I am not a white woman.  Well, Blues and Jazz came from the experience of African women and men in America, and just because white musicians think they own it, they never will.  They may play all the riffs and copy all the solos of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Marylou Williams, Hazel Scott, Melba Liston, and other prolific Jazzwomen but they will never understand the burden that led to the expression of the Blues and, subsequently, Jazz.

White people harm each other – yes – but the harm they did to Africans in America was counteracted by the Blues and Jazz and they can never understand the full meaning of that because they are unwilling to give credit to African-Americans as innovators of jazz, which [Shepp referred] to as ‘American realty – total reality.’  As Shepp contended, whites ‘think they have a right to jazz’ instead of being grateful for jazz as a ‘gift that the Negro has given.’  He said even white Americans in the jazz world ‘deny that jazz is first and foremost a black art created and nurtured by black people in this country out of the wealth of their historical experience’ (Mathieson, 1999).

Lynne gives high energy performance at banquet

Rockie Lynne walks the walk when it comes to honoring veterans.

The singer/songwriter proved that yet again on Thursday evening, Nov. 9, at Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1142 in North Wilkesboro.

An alumni of the 82nd Airborne Division, Lynne presented a music-filled program to the packed hall during the annual Gold Star Banquet. The banquet is held in honor of families who lost loved ones in war.

“It’s just an honor to be here, in a room where so many gave so much,” he said.

Lynne was introduced by his friend, Larry Thompson, who is the patriarch of a Gold Star family. Thompson’s son, Chris, a Navy Corpsman, was killed by a roadside bomb blast in  Iraq on Oct. 21, 2005. He had been conducting combat operations against enemy forces in the Al Anbar Province while assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 8th Regimental Combat Team, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Forces Atlantic, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

It was through Chris’ death that Thompson and Lynne became friends.

Lynn is the founder of Tribute to the Troops, a national charitable organization founded in Minnesota, is now in its 11th year. The organization has four chapters: in Minnesota, Illinois, Oregon and North  Carolina. This group has raised over $300,000 for a college fund designed to provide tuition for children who have lost a parent in active duty.

Lynne’s first visit in North  Carolina with Tribute to the Troops was to the home of Larry and Geraldine Thompson's in May 2012. Then, Lynne rode in an entourage from Iredell County to Millers Creek in the pouring rain.

“Larry was standing the driveway soaked to the bone when we got there,” Lynne said told the crowd. “He said, ‘If you’re in the rain, I’m in the rain.’”

Larry and Geraldine were gracious hosts the wet group of bikers. Grateful for the support.

Geraldine died on March 8, 2013. Larry asked Lynne to sing at the funeral. He did, and even wrote a song for Larry’s wife.

Lynne began his musical program on Thursday evening with a haunting version of Amazing Grace.

Between songs he’d tell stories about his life. He told how, when he was an infant, he was found in dumpster. He was placed in the Barium Springs Home for Children in Troutman, and was later adopted by Statesville family. Out of high school, he joined the Army, where he attended Ranger School and went on to fight in Nicaragua. Each year, during the holiday season, he travels to combat zones to perform for troops.

Thursday’s banquet included a fried chicken and ham dinner with all the fixings as well as homemade desserts, all courtesy of the VFW Auxiliary.

Post Commander Foyst Blackburn welcomed the crowd and members of the Honor Guard presented colors.

Comrade George Morgan, in his booming deep “Johnny Cash-esque” voice read, The Ragged Old Flag:

“…On Flanders field in World War one She got a big hole from a Bertha gun She turned blood red in World War Two She hung limp and low a time or two She was in Korea and Vietnam She went where she was sent by Uncle Sam…”

Ladies Auxiliary member Linda Flora the recognized the Gold Star Families.

Auxiliary officers were recognized by President Nancy Glass, which included: Sr. Vice President Pat Brooks, Jr. Vice President Judy Blackburn, Chaplain Anna Gambill, Treasurer Martha Bauguess, Secretary June Darnell, Conductress Hazel Page, Guard Trudy Wyatt, Trustees Maybelle Nance, and Linda Flora.

Blackburn  recognized VFW officers: Sr. Vice President Greg Joines, Jr. Vice       Larry Thompson, Quartermaster Ward Eller, Adjutant Ann Craighead, Chaplain Larry Reavis, Judge Advocate Walter McSwain, Jr., Surgeon Miles Lester, Trustees Raymond Hayes, Thomas McNeil, William Nichols, House Committee Charles Rhodes, Greg Joines, Frederick Land, Tom Phillips and Claude Sturgill.

Some called Thursday’s Gold Star Banquet the best in recent memory, especially with Lynne’s high energy patriotic message as the program.

As he closed out his performance, Lynne said to a cheering crowd, “I’m proud to stand in a room full of people who I know will never, ever take a knee during the National Anthem.”

The Joe Johnson Endowed Scholarship has been established at Northwest Mississippi Community College by Trudy Hall of Charlottesville, Virginia, and her late husband, retired Colonel Charles R. Johnson, Jr., according to Sybil Canon, associate vice president of Development and Special Projects. 

The scholarship was established just prior to Col. Johnson’s death in January 2017. Johnson, a native of Bruce, had also established a scholarship in memory of his mother, Mrs. Bert Johnson, a longtime teacher at Bruce High School.

In addition to Hall and his father, Joe is surrounded by a devoted family including his mother, Carol Narden of Sarasota, Florida; his brother, retired Colonel Sam Johnson, sister-in-law, Carol, and their children, Noel and Brad, of McMurray, Pennsylvania and his sister, Wendy Johnson of Providence, Rhode Island.

Joe Johnson has been a long-time resident of The Baddour Center.  Born in Germany, his father’s military career enabled him to live in Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Tampa, Florida; the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; Ft. Devens, Massachusetts; and Washington, DC, before settling happily at The Baddour Center in 1981.

Parke Pepper, executive director of The Baddour Center, describes Joe as someone who makes friends easily, with his winning personality and his innocent view of the world around him.  “He understands the simplicity of trust, and he has the awesome ability to experience life with unbridled joy and wonder,” said Pepper.

According to Pepper, at The Baddour Center Joe has employment opportunities as well as opportunities for a variety of sports and leisure time activities.

Canon expressed her appreciation for this first-of-its-kind scholarship. “This is the first time a scholarship has been established to honor someone with special needs. Having known Joe, Col. Johnson, and Trudy for 35 years, my own life has been blessed uniquely by each one of them. Now that blessing will be extended to Northwest students for generations to come.  It is such an honor for the Northwest Foundation to be a part of honoring Joe,” said Canon.
