Corruption in the Canadian Government
February 21, 2019
On February 19, 2015 the RCMP laid charges against SNC-Lavalin regarding fraud and corruption. This came to the surface after there was an allegation, from former employees, of SNC-Lavalin using bribery to obtain a contract from the government of Libya. If convicted, the company will face a 10-year ban on bidding for federal projects. This will hurt a large portion of the 50,000 people that they employ. SNC- Lavalin is a company that specialises infrastructure. The main six areas they specialise in are clean power, infrastructure, mining and metallurgy, nuclear and oil and gas. SNC-Lavalin is a world-wide company with its main office being in Quebec

Two weeks after Trudeau was elected into office as Prime Minister, he appointed Jody Wilson-Raybould as the minister of justice and the attorney general of Canada. This post gives her the responsibilities of heading the Department of Justice and overseeing prosecutions. She is the first indigenous person to hold this position. In this time, the Trudeau government also tables and passes a bill that allows a plea-bargain like deal to be held between the company being prosecuted and the prosecutors, this is called a remediation agreement.

On January 14, 2019, Trudeau moves Wilson-Raybould to the position of Justice of Veterans Affairs. The new job position is widely seen as a demotion from her previous posting. This is after the federal prosecutors refuse to offer SNC-Lavalin a remediation agreement in court. Just under a month later, the Globe and Mail newspaper report that Trudeau pressured Wilson-Raybould avoid the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin. Trudeau denies this allegation while Wilson-Raybould refuses to speak on the dealings she had while as attorney general because of solicitor-client privilege. This sparks the investigation of federal ethics commissioner, Mario Dion. On February 12, 2019 Wilson-Raybould resigns as Veterans Affairs Minister. It is also made known that she has hired Thomas Cromwell, who is a former Supreme Court Justice, to advise her the limitations of solicitor-client privilege.

I believe that Trudeau did pressure Wilson-Raybould to avoid the prosecution od SNC-Lavalin. His government has had multiple controversies since coming into office. He has had multiple officials “step down” throughout his time in office. Trudeau has also shown complete favouritism to any federal issue that involves Quebec. Shortly after Wilson-Raybould resigned, Gerald resigns as his principle secretary. This comes as a surprise because not only is Butts Trudeau’s closest advisor but also a close friend. I believe Butts resigned in order to take the attention off Trudeau and the corruption in the government.
