lycoris recoil review

reposted from twitter! lycoreco is the first tv anime i’ve watched to completion in a while, plus it’s an original anime so it gets points for completion instead of being an extended promo for the source material with no ending in sight.

finished lycoreco yesterday. understood the hype, action scenes and overall animation great but it isn’t really something i would rewatch. feels like a slice of life disguised as an action. has a good resolution, but first half hooked me better than second half.

the themes are a lot and mixed. lycoris org, def had psycho pass vibes going on but majima’s talk of balance was more outlandish and less relatable than makishima’s alienation of the system (feels like opm garou basically).

alan org def had a cult vibe going, but yoshi’s portrayal as a fanatic was quite in the shadows and his final confrontation w chisato wasn’t as impactful (may sound weird but no dramatic lighting to show how crazy the guy is?) and it was interrupted by takina in between.

i dunno how to feel about mika taking the heart and giving it to chisato. chisato doesn’t show anything to the audience about how she feels about it other than running away, literally. she made a choice not to murk yoshi but the choice was taken away from her anyway. for s2 bait.

idm the ending cos it does feel like the whole anime is centred around chisato’s wishes and her goal of achieving them, which is living a peaceful life with her friends. everything is packaged as a happy ending because mc plot armor, if that makes sense.

but do i feel satisfied by chisato’s growth along her journey? i feel a little cheated. she was always shown as pure and happy from the start, & never changed even after yoshi’s revelation because mika raised her well. unchanging, unwavering. i do like her genki personality tho.

i also wish takina had more relevance outside of being there just to take hits because chisato is unbeatable, and always being shown running in to save chisato because chisato has no self-preservation, a character flaw which really should have been talked about more often.

i like how takina grows to like chisato immediately - no bs ‘duo that hates each other at first but grow to like each other’ vibes, but sometimes they do feel less like a duo and more like girlfriends that happen to be partners. duo fight scenes are shafted in favour of chisato.

which all the more makes this show about chisato. her selfish wish to do what she wants (to help others, live a peaceful life with her friends) conflicting with her mission given to her by others (to take lives).

well, maybe it’s hard to develop 2 people at the same time in 13 episodes so rip takina i guess.

and as a side note, i really liked fuki and sakura lol and i hope lilybell comes back in s2, but i’m not hoping for that direction because action scenes clash with chisato’s ideals.

WAIT I can't believe the seven blasphemous deaths got a ‘sent into space like jojo kars and eventually she stopped thinking' ending LMFAOOOO

kinda sad that she went back to being a sword bc its like... feels like it was something season 2 could have done to finish her off in sword form but they dragged it to season 3? at least in her new form she felt like a cool final boss like in the opening but she only had 1 episode of screentime and 1 fighting scene so :( wheres the epic fight scene i was promised like in the opening

jun po really died for nothing he deserved better bro 😔

urobuchi really be like ‘one fight scene later’ jun po: “oh god i must sacrifice myself to kill 7bd!” *dies for plot twist so we can see the omg reveal that emperor is the big boss we’re gonna see in the next season rite*

jun po deserves better and so does mantis guy (but hey, mantis guy had a better sacrifice for plot twist schtick going on)

honestly a little disappointed with how the last ep turned out - 7bd appeared and was like 'i lived, bitch' and had 1 poor fight scene with jun po - i love the part when she commented that not everyone can use the magic swords, but then shang bu huan took over and suddenly she got scared??? and then she got vamoosed into kars space. what happened to OP fights like last season finale?

also disappointed that lin xue ya and the locust boss didn’t have any contact, so there’s no lin xue ya breakdown like last 2 seasons (when he tried to scam the villains but eventually failed bc 1 of them summoned a demon as a ‘fuck you’ while the other 1 was too scummy that he ended up making lin mald LMAOO), in the end lin just went off somewhere which in itself it suspicious but also it feels like s3 ending was kinda rushed, like it was part 1 of a season rather than s2 which had a cliffhanger but had time for a clean ending

lang be like “let me do my sasuke thing” and left, poor dude really be traumatised after his 2 most women in his life got blinded bc of him :’)))

so i started to watch rwby and one of my favourite characters was pyrrha, i went to check her trivia on wiki while i was still at vol 2 and the first thing i saw on her search result summary was a ‘was’

also i think the naming system in rwby is pretty dope, first off team names have the first letter of each person in the team as well as spell out a legit name (rwby, juniper)

also coco has such a badass design man.... my vol 1-2 faves were definitely weiss pyrrha and coco

thinking abt tadashi telling adam “i brought you into the skating world and i can take you out of it, bitch” and then we watch as he runs reki over with a car, brings him to a love hotel and then slowly gets written out of the narrative.

i also find it extremely hilarious that after reki and adam’s second beef adam didn’t go ballistic and try to murk adam out of his ruined pride like typical villains do but instead went off to sulk and buy an expensive and obnoxious funeral suit and mask for his next beef.

what i’m saying is that after reki’s second beef with adam adam should have fallen in love with reki just like he did with langa. reki went thru 4 painful episodes of agonising over his love for skating and could totally be written in to resonate with adam who’s lost the same thing.

just imagine. if the sk8 fandom didn’t hate adam so much we could have had reki/adam crackship. the potential. the inherent horniness. *horngey grip intensifies*

oya i watched infinity train today, it was draggy, unnecessary explanations in a lot of areas that could be told instead of shown (a lot of stupid expo of the villain monologuing every two minutes), the whiplash between comedy and serious is too fastpaced (then again, movie limitations), the battle animations weren't as interesting -- then again, i suppose it would be hard to find a fist vs swords match interesting

but then again, AKAZA SNOWFLAKE DESTRUCTIVE COMPASS ANIMATION YEAHHHHHHHHH
