MEDICAL INQUIRIES AND OBSERVATIONS, UPON THE DISEASES OF THE MIND It's a very interesting read, both as a time capsule for the humble begginings of psychology, and in the stories told throughout. There's a lot of vignettes about people's delusions: rich people thinking they're made of glass, mining fume-induced flesh consumption, and such.
Tumblr media
There's something intriguing to me about the classification of "tristimania" or "hypochondriasis" posed here. It's essentially a spectrum disorder between what we'd consider Bipolar Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder in modern psychiatry, mixed with actual hypochondria.
Tumblr media
Under the cut, I've got my favorite story in the book so far... Fuck, it feels like something straight out of Dead Ringers.

'Madness forces you to concentrate on it. It is attention seeking because it wants an audience. Madness wants to paint it's vision so the world can see what the human mind is capable of seeing. It wants to play its passions so the world can hear it's song. It wants to write and speak because it seeks to be understood and to understand itself. It wants to utter - to outer - it's inner knowledge. It is as if the human mind, on it's continuum for from normal middle C to the upper reaches and lower depths, needs some people to play the higher Cs and to be played by the cavernous bass, so that everyone may know of those realms, even if they themselves are never dwellers there' -Jay Griffith . . . #travelphotography #inspiration #mountians #coloradoisawesomesauce #coloRado #loveisfree #tristimania #jaygriffith #seekdiscomfort #madness #musichungryminds #musiciansofig #coloradophotographer #kassandraclarkephotography #thewanderingwarrior #sunrise #travelblog #discover #hippiesofig #notallwhowanderarelost (at Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0ZAUJwAwwn/?igshid=ra8a2vk5usse

oh boy, i have a handful when it comes to books! I am not much of a movie watcher - i can't seem to think of any documentaries at the moment. But books! Some of my favorite fiction books just at the top op my head; The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brönte, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brönte, To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. & for non fiction books (which includes essays and biographies as well); Little Weirds by Jenny Slate, Voices from Chernobyl by Svetlana Alexievich, The Shaking Woman by Siri Hustvedt, Madness Rack and Honey by Mary Ruefle, Reborn + As Consciousness is Harnessed to Flesh both by Susan Sontag, Glass Irony & God by Anne Carson, and Tristimania by Jay Griffiths
Hope i could offer some inspiration <3

Tristimania - Jay Griffiths
Tristimania A Diary of Manic Depression Jay Griffiths Genre: Medical Price: $1.99 Publish Date: May 16, 2016 Publisher: Counterpoint Press Seller: OpenRoad Integrated Media, LLC The author of A Country Called Childhood delivers “a glimpse of madness from inside the eye of the storm” ( The Guardian ).   Tristimania  is a stark and lyrical account of the psyche in crisis. It tells the story of a devastating year-long episode of manic depression, culminating in a long solo pilgrimage across Spain. The book is rare in recording the experience of mania and shows how the condition is at once terrifying and also profoundly creative, both tricking and treating the psyche. In exploring its literary influence, Griffiths looks at Shakespeare’s work, and examines the Trickster role, tracing its mercuriality through the character of Mercury. An intimate, raw journey, the book illuminates something of the universal human spirit.   “Her book—which recounts a bruising year of being held captive by bipolar disorder . . . is an education in the history, mythology and poetics of madness, in all its wildness and glaring neon. Griffiths is a high-wire writer who performs the difficult trick of taking you into the depths of her madness while managing to remain a completely reliable guide . . . This is self-exposure of a higher order.” — The New Statesmen   “Art and madness have always shadowed each other.  Tristimania  traces the shadow to its source and watches as it grows long. This is one of the bravest books I’ve read in a long time.” —Paul Kingsnorth, Man Booker Prize finalist and author of  The Wake   “A book of terrible beauty: a dazzling testament to the moral and literary power of brokenness.” —Charles Foster, author of Being a Beast http://dlvr.it/R1ctTN

“One morning I saw a robin singing in a high branch, and the angle of its beak was the angle of hope: those extra degrees beyond the necessary and the abundance of bird-joy and robin-poetry made me cry for its song of well-being. The sheer goodness of nature for the sick psyche is incomparable; there in green one is not judged, one is accepted, with consolation and company. Nature gives you the exalted, tender ordinary—as of right.”

what are your favourite books? 📖
I have many many answers to this!! Here’s a small list for you:
The lovely brontë sisters and their heartbreaking & beautiful stories Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre
Glass, Irony & God by Anne Carson (i still think about the glass essay almost religiously every day, my book is so covered in lines and notes)
also Carson’s translation of Sappho’s poems called If not, Winter
Virginia Woolf (of course of course) The first book i read of hers was To the Lighthouse and i think that particular book will forever have a special place in my heart. Other than that one i love The Waves, Mrs. Dalloway, A Room of ones own, Moments of Being and Orlando
As Consciousness is Harnessed to Flesh by Susan Sontag
Tristimania by Jay Griffiths - i remember being very moved by a paragraph in the book about living in metaphors/reaching out to people through them + another paragraph about giving a poem to strangers she met on her travel every day (must say! though, this talks a lot about mental health and heavy feelings so maybe be careful about this one if this affects you a lot)
Sculptor's Daughter + The Summer Book by Tove Jansson
I also really enjoyed Erica Jong’s Witches, though its not as informative as it might appear, its definitely more prose and poetry than information (though not entirely, some truth is there too!) - but if you know this, its a lovely read and still quite eye opening anyways
As for poems;
I am currently reading a lot of Mary Oliver poems + essays which i Love
Audre Lorde’s collected works!
Joy Harjo, i have read her book Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings, and just the name makes me shiver - as does her poems!!
Christina Rossetti also have a lovely collection of beautiful poems and stories
Hope to have inspired you a bit! If anyone else have favorite books they want to share, please please do so!  💌

Quote
Sometimes I would be frightened that music would mean a kind of dissolution, as if my words, my thoughts and my self hood were made of sand and the inrush of liquid music would dissolve me entirely; no pecularity would stand. All that would remain would be the rounded nubs of damp sand on a beach after the first wave has unspecified the sandcastle, and has departicularized the sharp, dry towers into soft, wet mounds. Then, lost to the tide and the tide's song, I would become music. Whs was ‘I’ would be gone. The rest would be silence

Tristimania is a kind of bad mood and depression which belongs to obsessive neurosis, it can cause your turndown of emotion and slowness in thinking and bluntness in speech and action.
