the added layer to max’s freakout about the throuple — aside from the obvious — is that in the midst of trying to navigate his feelings about it and whether he wants to do it again/expand it into a relationship, he was also immediately confronted head-on with the possibility of being Pandemic Ground Zero once again. not only did he clearly feel like he wasn’t being respected on a professional level immediately after sleeping with avery and tristan (something already primed to make him feel weird, considering the conversations he’s had with both of them) both because he clearly felt ganged up on and because it was implied they went over his head to inform captain massey, but ALSO he was clearly freaked out by the possibility of having to face all of that again, and imo more than a little in denial about it. from his perspective, he went after what he wanted and got it, and the universe responded by threatening to put him back in hell. of course he overreacted and panicked and ran away!!
