#triptans haven't been studied in migraine with brainstem aura/hemiplegic migraine because of a debatable stroke risk

Note
for migraines there are 2 categories of newer drugs that block CGRP: anti CGRP monoclonal antibodies (MABs, all of the drug names end in -mab) which are used as preventatives, and drugs that bind to CGRP receptors (gepants, end in -gepant, Ubrelvy belongs to this category) some of which can be used as abortives in addition to preventatives. CGRP is a peptide that is released as part of the cortical spreading depression in migraine, and is thought to be responsible for a lot of the pain, inflammation, and vasodilation.
one of my favorite things about CGRP inhibitors is that they can treat aura symptoms in addition to the headache itself when used as an abortive. the main caveat is that they're expensive so insurance usually won't cover them unless you've already tried anticonvulsants, beta blockers, and/or antidepressants.
sorry if you're already aware of this, neurology is one of my special interests so I like to share whatever information I know
Triptans don't work for me either, but there's a new drug called Ubrelvy that I tried once (as a sample) and it worked.. it's expensive though. I have a script for it to try more but haven't filled it yet. Triptans have horrible side effects for me :c
I’ll keep the name in mind, thank you.
Triptans not only don’t work for me, they gave me a speech slur which is never good. I’m not keen to experience that again.
