I’m in #taosnewmexico for a writing retreat but my heart and mind is back in #ethiopia I really enjoyed my trip and all of the #lifelessons I have learned from #hiking #backpacking #camping and occasionally hating on my French and Dutch friends! These camels and these men are mining salt in the #danakil depression, which is arguably one of the hottest place on earth. According to the #bbc Danakil is 34.4C all year-round, and it only rains between 100-200 meters in January. These men wake up before the heat takes its strangulation stance to begin mining the salt. They live an hour away on foot from the salt mines, and they walk through the #afardesert in their plastic sandals, with their small axes, and their camels, to labour many hours under the sun. They break the plate of salt from the earth, then chop them into slabs, and load them onto the camels. Afterwards, they walk seven days to the nearest market to sell the salt. The salt is considered to be #whitegold and it provides these men in the #afar region a stable income. This is backbreaking work. This is work that provides a roof and food but nothing else. This is work that makes you turn your head away from these men because you feel ashamed of your privilege. This is backbreaking work for everyone, including the camels. One camel started shouting and complaining when it knew the heavy salts were going to be draped over its hump. The hissing and shouting from that camel was so heavy and so real, I had to walk away. I went into the truck where the AC was on blast and my body was overtaken by sleep. I tried to dream away this reality. But I woke up still thinking about these men sitting in the desert, under the hottest sky, ploughing away. Even though, we don’t want to hear, see, and experience inequality it’s still exists, and instead of turning our heads away from it, we should confront it, and change it, so we don’t have to pretend to be blind.
