So I’ve been machinegifted this one for time travel by my friend, which of course I accepted, but experiencing some bafflement, I friendasked what was going on, and it turns out my ‘friend’ was spiritpossessed by the late emperor Honorius, who empireruled the Western half of the Roman empire after it fatherdied. He oversaw the citysacking of Rome, and his futuretravelling has shown him the fall of his half of the empire, and much later on the elimination of the Roman Empire in full. This has muchgiven grief to him, as you probably would have expected. So he asked me to help prevent this futureoccuring. I have my misgivings about Rome, of course, being a colonial, imperial, and oppressive institution—but his pleas heartmoved me and thus I accepted. Problem is, I have no idea what to do? Celebrations

Milo holding a bottle of whiskey and a set of shot glasses greeted Adrien the moment he entered the tavern, he eyed the bottle dubiously. "I'm all for celebrating but I don't want to make a habit of it" Adrien stated firmly pushing the bottle away, he didn't want to put Fe' in the line of fire again.

"Celebratory shots" Milo smiled, "Just one or two, not drinking" he said insisting with a forward gesture and a shrug. 

Adrien sighed and took one of the glasses from Milo, holding it out "Just ONE" he told him putting up a single finger before removing his mask and stuffing it in his pocket. 

Milo chuckled and poured them both a shot, raising his glass "To the Cheshire, to Chat Noir, and to the new and improved 'Le Souriante Taverne' CHEERS" *clink*. Together they knocked back their shots, both coughed hard patting each other on the back laughing.

When both were finished with their coughing fits Adrien asked "Why change the name, 'The Grinning Tavern' seems a little on the nose don't you think?". 

Milo shrugged replying "Eh it's a back alley tavern inside what has become a special kind of haven so even if someone did want to try anything they wouldn't be able to". Adrien returned the shrug accepting Milo's statement, they took a short tour of the newly finished tavern admiring their handy work. After making some sandwiches the two of them decided that they should have a proper party with Fe' and Nino after school and left the tavern. Milo had invited Adrien over to his place since it was closer and the two of them needed some real sleep. 

Adrien declined telling him "I need to pick up some more incense ,almost out of I.C's, thank you for the offer" he donned his mask as he left the alley. Plagg was too tired from patrol and the round trip to the school to even eat, forcing Adrien to walk but he didn't mind a little stroll down to the store. The shop owner recognized him immediately and to his surprise welcomed him back with a wide smile.

"Chat Noir, welcome back" she sounded happy to see him "How have you been?" she asked.

"Busy" he replied then asking cautiously "You aren't scared of me?".

The shop owner shook her head "Why would I be, I saw how you treated that cowboy and you protect Paris everyday".  She walked around the counter "Just because you beat the tar out of a couple basket cases doesn't mean we should be afraid". Putting her hands on his shoulders she looked him in the eyes and told him "You are always there even if you aren't on the front lines, people remember that". 

"Hehehe I guess you're right" he chuckled remembering the times he had been late because he was helping emergency responders or the countless times he stayed after to check on victims. "But you know what they say 'Unsung heroes stay unsung to everyone but those who know their melody' at least my brother said that" he told her. 

"True but 'The best heroes are those outside of the spotlight, The Unsung', that's what I say" she retorted with a warm smile, "Now what brings you back". 

Adrien was touched by her words and he spaced out for a moment after which he snapped back to reality blurting "Incense". The shop owner nodded and walked off to retrieve what he needed returning shortly after with the box of lavender incense. "How would you feel about becoming a member?" Adrien asked as she rang him up.

"Of the Community?" she asked taking the cash he handed her as payment "I don't think I can get my landlord to-".

Adrien held up his hand "I'm asking you not the building" he stated.

The shop owner gave him a smile "I would be honored" 

He nodded telling her "A messenger with important information wearing a Cheshire grin will arrive sometime soon" before leaving with incense in hand, heading to the nearby park to roll a new batch of I.C's. That Monday morning was quiet as most people were at work or in class leaving the park almost completely empty save for the occasional elderly visitor and wildlife. By lunch time he had gone through his entire supply of wax paper and almost all of the incense he had just purchased. Not wanting to have to stagger his next supply run he decided to give them to Fe', he needed to pick up Belial from her place anyway, he could drop off the extra incense while he was there. 

Fe' was relaxing on the couch in her apartment during her lunch break when there was a knock at the door, "The door is open" she called out not wanting to move. The door creaked open and Belial ,who was napping on her chest, awoke and jumped from her meowing happily. She knew that he only meowed like that for one person "Adrien, that you?" she asked lifting her head as the door clicked shut.

"Yeah It's me, I brought you a house warming gift" he said jokingly as he kneeled down to let Belial climb up his arm and onto his shoulder while he removed his mask . 

"A house warming gift" Fe' said sitting up with a groan, raising an eyebrow questioningly she asked "You've never been the type Big Bro, what’s the catch?". 

Adrien held up the box that now held only a handful of incense "First I need you to deliver some things to a shop owner on your way to the tavern, the address is on the box. Second, I need you to tell Nino to come to the tavern tonight and you need to come too". 

"Ok, what am I delivering?" Fe' asked with a shrug.

He chuckled "A mask and some paint along with a message ,oh and wear your mask too, she'll be expecting you to explain how the Cheshire works. It's just the shop owner so don't worry about anybody else, I'm not trying to start a political turf war". 

Fe' shook her head smiling "Oh is that all" she said sarcastically, Adrien walked over handing her the box giving her puppy dog eyes "Yeah, yeah I'll do it and I'll see at the tavern tonight, dork". Adrien laughed waving her goodbye as he left, using the stairwell to reach the roof he transformed and got a running start. He planned to take the long way around the back of the school and circle back to where he normally slept, nobody seemed to notice or if they did they didn't care. A few minutes of roof hopping later and he was shimmying to his normal spot where he pulled out a fresh I.C lighting it and dozed off.

Plagg had been awoken by the sound of the end of lunch bell shortly after Adrien and Belial had fallen asleep, after eating the Camembert in Adriens pocket he flew into the school. He knew his way around well enough to phase into Marinette's bag to surprise Tikki in the middle of class. "Hey Tikki, do you mind if I hang with you?" he asked poking his head through the bottom of the bag, he was greeted with a panicked slap to the face.

"Plagg, what are you doing here, why aren't you with your wielder?" Tikki whisper yelled at him. 

"Sleeping in his normal spot, you hit harder than one would think" Plagg replied rubbing his face. The two of them continued to chat casually enjoying each other's company, Marinette had finally noticed Plagg when she opened her bag to get a pen. She excused herself to the bathroom to ask what he was doing in her bag in the middle of the day. Plagg did most of the explaining, "I've been asleep since patrol, I woke up, he was asleep, I was bored so I came to talk with Tikki'' it was a very short explanation. Once Marinette was all caught up she returned to class making the excuse she felt something in her teeth when Alya asked what her sudden bathroom break was about. 

The rest of the day passed by as it always did, with the exception of Fe' leaving early to attend Cheshire business and catching Nino on his way out at the end of the day to tell him to meet at the tavern. Plagg had to bid farewell to Tikki before slipping away back to Adrien who was still sleeping in the same spot he always did, somehow unnoticed by anyone below. Adrien was allowed to sleep for a while longer as the Plagg tried to wake him until finally he burped in his face, immediately jolting Adrien awake. The commotion also stirred Belial awake who gagged after catching a whiff of Plagg's pungent cheese breath. 

"Nino and Fe' are on their way to the tavern right now, you gotta get moving kid, I'm ready when you are" Plagg told him. Adrien stood and nodded before shimmying back around the roof to get out of sight, even if him sleeping didn't attract attention the transformations flash would. Once transformed it took him only a few minutes to reach the tavern, Adrien beat Fe' and Nino but Milo beat them all. By the time he walked in Milo had already set up a table in the center of the room with chairs and glasses for everyone ,even spots for Plagg and Belial to sit atop the table. Adrien de-transformed as Nino and Fe' arrived behind him only to stop just inside to admire how good the tavern looked thanks to their work. Milo emerged from the back carrying plates of fancy looking meals in each hand 

"Adrien" he called "-you gonna just stand there slack jawed or are you going to get back here and help me set the table?".

"R-Right" Adrien said moving toward the pair of saloon doors that now covered the entrance to the back, it took another trip by Milo to get everybody's meals set but it was worth it. Plagg received a plate of assorted cheeses in both the stinky and normal variety with crackers and deli meats. Belial was presented with a fresh fish mixed with wet and dry cat foods made to look like a four star meal. Milo, Fe', Nino and Adrien were all served the juiciest and most tender burgers and ribs they'd ever had. The meals weren't five star restaurant quality, made from finest cuts of meat but it was a family meal and that was something no one in that room had experienced in a very long time. When they finished their meals and polished off the plates Milo broke out the bottle of whiskey that he and Adrien had taken a shot from earlier that day and a set of glasses. 

Pouring everyone a shot of liquid fire he repeated a version of his line from that morning "To the Cheshire, to Adrien, and to the new and improved 'Le Souriante Taverne' CHEERS" *clink*. All together Milo, Adrien, Nino, Fe', and Plagg knocked back their drinks. Belial received a very diluted shot but passed out after lapping up maybe half of his glass, he was a lightweight. They put their sleeping furry companion upstairs to sleep, but downstairs they danced and sang bad karaoke for hours. Adrien ,unfortunately, had to go on patrol as Chat Noir but before leaving with a sleeping Belial on his shoulder he grabbed another pair of black and yellow beanies. Fe' left soon after Adrien but Nino and Milo stayed to prepare the tavern for the reopening rush that would be coming that night. 

Patrol was uneventful as usual but Chat's meeting with Ladybug was odd, she was very upbeat for someone who was so dead tired the morning before, "Bonsoir Chatton, how was patrol?". 

"Bonsoir Ladybug, probably not as good as yours I would assume" he replied leaning back careful not to let Belial slide off "What's got you in such a cheery mood?".

"I just had a good day that's all" she didn't want to tell him that his Kwami had come to see her for most of the day.

Chat smiled "Well I hope these can make it a bit better" he said pulling out a pair of beanies.

"What are these, a fashion statement?" Ladybug asked sarcastically trying to play dumb.

"No,no, no putting my hair in a man bun would be a fashion statement, this is what you need to get into the Cheshire square" he explained offering them to her. Ladybug laughed so hard she snorted at the thought of seeing Chat in a man bun before taking the beanies using them to try and stifle her laughter to catch her breath. Chat raised an eyebrow asking "Is the thought of me with a man bun really that funny?".

When she could speak again Ladybug replied "That and it being a 'fashion statement', yes" she had to stifle another laughing fit at her own words. "So what do these mean, the black and yellow beanies?" she asked.

"The color beanie you wear when you enter the Square signifies who you're looking for, Black means you're looking for me, Yellow means Adrien. Just wander around for a while and someone will contact us, we'll find you but if neither of us are available then someone will approach and notify you" Chat explained. 

Ladybug leaned in suddenly hugging her partner "Thank you Chat, you don't know how much this means to me". Despite Adrien having already delivered a pair to her along with the class earlier that morning to her, Chat keeping his promise spoke volumes of how much he still trusted her. The motion from her hug woke a still wasted Belial who puked over Chat's shoulder but away from Ladybug, the vomit threaded through the crossbars splattering on the floor below. "Aw is Belial ok?" Ladybug asked concerned for the cat's health.

Chat looked to his fuzzy companion "Yeah he's fine, the lightweight just partied a little too hard earlier" he told her as he ran his hand over Belial's back a few times eliciting a purr. 

"YOU WHAT?!" Ladybug said furiously.

Putting his hands up as a barrier he explained himself "The Familia was celebrating finishing a large project, we all had some food and took a single shot of whiskey. Belial got water with barely enough to taste. He'll be fine, though next time I think we'll just give him water if we do celebrate again". Ladybug scowled at him with disappointment in her eyes, Chat took it as his que to leave. "Well I should get going. It's gonna be a busy night at work tonight, bonne nuit...ma dame" he said with a salute before launching to the nearest building. 

Ladybug looked down at the beanies then toward her partner as his figure faded into a shadow against the night sky "Bonne nuit mon minou". She sat enjoying the night breeze for a while longer before zipping off to return home, the girls were coming over to plan when they would go to the Cheshire square. Once she was home Marinette prepared snacks and cleaned her room in preparation for what was probably going to end up as another meeting turned sleepover. Meanwhile at Le Souriante Taverne, Adrien had arrived only a few minutes after Milo re-opened but already every table and seat at the bar was filled and Nino and Milo were swamped. Adrien weaved his way through the crowd slipping into the back and changed as fast as he could to join the fray with his Familia. Between the three of them they managed to keep glasses full and meals served for what felt like half the Square, neither Milo nor Nino saw Adrien enter but they were glad he showed up. 

By the end of the night the Nino, Milo and Adrien were exhausted to the point of near collapse, Nino had decided to sleep in one of the rooms and Milo would wake him up in the morning. Adrien chose to attempt parkour-ing to his normal spot, failing multiple times in the process resulting in a few minor to moderate injuries, his I.C was extra relaxing that night. The girls had made big plans for the class to venture into the Cheshire Square, all they needed to do now was set them in motion.

Weeks had passed since Adrien had distributed the beanies and the girls had since set their plan into motion, Nino acted as the class's inside man to get everything ready in the Square. So far almost no one had entered the Square looking for him as either Adrien or Chat Noir, only occasionally did he get a visit. Juleka came around looking for Adrien a few times just to see how he was doing or ask for help with physics and mathematics homework which he was happy to help with. Ladybug had dropped in once or twice to check in on Adrien to see how he was handling everything, she always tried to ask why he left or why he and Chat Noir wore masks. Every time she asked Adrien would deflect, she and one other person could never know he was Chat Noir and giving a reason for the mask could reveal him. Alya came looking for Chat a number of times in hopes of getting an interview but Akuma attacks had gone back to their normal frequency making it difficult for them to finish. 

Some of the new Villains were far more aggressive as well, on more than one occasion they would cause mayhem just to lure him and Ladybug into the open. Others were so bold as to go to Cheshire Square and level the area around or inside the Square. Hawkmoth was making it clear that he is willing to go as far as he needs to get the Miraculous. Luckily with Cheshire so close to the affected areas it wasn't hard for Chat to quickly rally and coordinate volunteers to work with emergency responders. 

The weekend was again approaching and Alya had called the class together to double check everything "Ok guys Adrien and Fe's birthdays are this weekend Nino, is everything ready?". 

"Knock on wood that an Akuma doesn't attack and we're set to go into the Square"

Alya looked at Nino with a serious look in her eye "And you're certain that both Chat Noir and Adrien are ok with this?".

He smiled "They don't micromanage everything that goes on in there, so don't worry about them thinking they can't trust anyone, Cheshire are individuals in a community remember".

"But they work like an army, so far the Cheshire Square has acted as a kind of garrison against anyone looking for Adrien without proper passage" Marinette said skeptically. 

Nino gave her a serious look lowering his voice "They-we are willing to fight if need be and yes we keep those who have continued looking out but participation is completely voluntary". 

Marinette was surprised at his response but as she thought back vague memories surfaced of people with toothy grins milling about in the background of recent battles. While the thought was in her mind she asked "How are you gonna get us in anyhow is there something that marks you as a Cheshire?". She had her suspicions but was unsure, Nino immediately confirmed them as he pulled a black face mask with a white teeth baring grin painted across it.  

He held it up for the class to see telling them "Most of the Cheshire know who's who but this is my mark, if anyone asks I'll tell them know I'm your sponsor. The hard part is going to be avoiding Chat Noir and Fe' ,who also possess a mark, can't have them spotting us for obvious reasons". The class nodded and murmured in agreement. "Alright if everyone's ready then the only thing left to do now is for me to confirm everything has been delivered and-"

"What ya'll plotting in here? hmm~" 

The class jumped at the sudden interjection of another unexpected voice, they all blurted out various answers without looking at who it was that surprised them. "Nothing!", "telling secrets!", "complimenting each other's nails!", "Summoning demons!". When they did look to see where the voice came from they saw Fe' standing in the doorway, she had been on her way out when she heard voices coming from one of the classrooms. 

With a look approaching concern rather than confusion Fe' backed away slowly "O-K...I'm just going to leave you all to-" she gestured to the tightly huddled group "whatever this is". They all smiled and waved as she shuffled off keeping an eye on them, once neither party could see the other both the class and Fe' let out a sigh. However the class's reprieve from panic was short lived as the purr of a motorcycle from outside caused them all stiffen like statues. Holding their breath they waited for the sound of footsteps approaching but only heard those of Fe' going down the stairs and out of earshot. 

"You sure you want to help out at the tavern tonight Sis, I know Nino's not gonna be able to help but the weekends are pretty nuts sometimes" Adrien warned offering her a helm.

Grabbing the helmet and putting it on Fe' replied "I think I'll manage and besides if the weekends get crazy then it sounds like you could use all the help you can get". Adrien shrugged accepting her words and started the bike as she hopped on, once he felt her arms wrapped around him they rode off to the tavern.

Inside the class had finally released their collective breaths, "That was close Nino, I thought you told your uncle you weren't working tonight" Alya said confused. 

"I did, Sis must've volunteered or something I don't know, I don't keep track of everything my Bro does ,I'm not his father, he probably came to pick her up" Nino retorted. He shook his head adding "So much has happened recently that I doubt either of them even remember their birthdays are this weekend".

Alya chuckled rubbing the bridge of her nose "You're probably right plus you and your Familia are thick as thieves so she's most likely told him about our meeting". Fe' had mentioned the strange meeting to Adrien but he had brushed it off knowing that it wasn't a problem, he assumed it was probably a school event that was supposed to be a surprise. Adrien remembered the handful of times he was involved in such projects, they were among his more fond memories of his time in normal school. They arrived at the tavern early to allow Milo to teach Fe' how to work the new appliances and teach her table numbers while Adrien went on patrol as Chat Noir. 

As usual patrol was uneventful and so was his check in with Ladybug, the tavern was busy but throughout the night but not nearly to the same extent as the night after finishing renovation. At the same time Nino was paying a visit to various shops inside the Square to give them the address of the park he needed the supplies delivered to. Nino had asked Plagg when they went on patrol to plan the deliveries and the meeting after his patrol but before noon. He met class at the edge of the Square closest to the park that they planned to throw their party in, escorting them through was easy. Their timing was perfect as they arrived at the park at the same time as all the deliveries, they thanked the Cheshire, rolled up their sleeves and got to work. It took a few hours to get everything set up, they had left the making the banner for last but couldn't decide on what it should say. 

Rose wanted it to say "Happy Birthday Agreste's" and most of the class was behind her on the decision but others had concerns about using their last name. After some serious convincing they decided on a different banner that would read "Happy B-Day Fe' and Adrien" to avoid invoking a name that the two of them seemed to resent. 

With everything set up Nino made the call, "Hey Bro, there's some people looking for you".

"Chat Noir or Adrien?".

Nino hushed the class as they giggled excitedly behind him "Adrien, oh and bring Sis with you, meet in the park".

"Which park Nino, there's a lot of those around Paris".

"The only one in the Square you dandelion" He replied before hanging up. 

On the other end of the call Adrien looked at his phone reading the "Call Ended" screen confused, shaking his head he called upstairs to Fe' who was straightening out beds. "Yo Sis, Nino wants us to meet him at the park"

"The one in the Square?" she called back.

"Yeah get down here, the beds will be there when we get back" He heard footsteps approach the railing above him, knowing what was coming he held his arms out. Casually Fe' vaulted the railing falling into her brother's arms before being thrown into the air once more and coming to rest on his shoulder. After exchanging their lines the two of them changed into clothes that would better suit casually meeting people that were looking for them. Adrien was sporting jeans, a hooded long sleeve shirt with a maroon and black color pallete and a blue scarf. Fe' wore skinny jeans that accented her figure with a green button up shirt tucked in and a black belt. No one was left in the tavern since Milo had gone home so they took Belial with them, he slept draped over Adrien's shoulder as they walked down to the park. 

As they turned to enter the park the two of them were greeted by the class holding a banner that read "Happy B-Day Fe' and Adrien" with decorated tables standing nearby. They stood reading the banner over and over in their heads before ,after a few awkward seconds, face palming only just remembering it was their birthdays. Everyone burst into laughter as Adrien explained that it was common for him and Fe' to forget their own birthdays and that they genuinely forgot how old they were sometimes. He decided it was best not to mention how this would be his first actual birthday party, the Bubbler incident didn't count. Although he was ,in a way, touched that Nino was so upset that his father wouldn't let him have a party that it pushed him that far despite what he did as Bubbler. The party was nice, everyone was chatting, dancing, trying to show off, or challenging each other to contests, the hours flew by in a flash.

"Ok everyone gather-round" Alya shouted getting everyone's attention "We have all been having fun but I think it's time for the 'sunshine children' to open some presents, don't you?". The class all nodded and murmured in agreement, "Alright then" she exclaimed gesturing for them to follow her as she guided them to a table with gifts for them. There were the usual gag gifts and a lot of cards since no one knew what to get Adrien, Fe' on the other hand did receive some nice makeup and jewelry along with gag gifts. Even Belial had gotten a few tiny outfits, some catnip that was promptly used causing him to pass out. But perhaps the most meaningful gifts that both of them received were from Marinette and Juleka. 

Marinette had designed and crafted a beautiful dress for Fe', Juleka had brought her hair dye kit offering to give Fe’ highlights in any color she wanted. The class had set up a makeshift changing booth complete with mirror which she gleefully stepped into motioning for Juleka to join her, presumably to help get into the dress. A few minutes passed as Fe' changed, while she did Marinette had given Adrien a gift personally ,it was a hat, one that matched his scarf. It wasn't until he unwrapped the hat that he remembered it was her who knitted the scarf, he opened his mouth to thank her but was stopped when someone whistled.  Fe' stepped out wearing a button up, sleeveless, white, summer short dress, with a polo collar and a purple ribbon tied in a bow around the waist. The fabric flowed in the light breeze like ripples of water, shimmering a iridescent pink that matched the color of her now highlighted hair. 

She looked herself in the mirror doing a little spin and the longer she looked the happier she seemed to become. Adrien looked on standing by Marinette, he whistled and raised his voice so she could hear "As stunning as ever Sis" he called giving a thumbs up. Fe' turned to him with tears in her eyes, rushing over to them ,arms wide, she caught them in a tight embrace rocking in place with and chuckling with joy. They stood there as close as they could possibly be for a few moments, Adrien whispered "Thank you" in Marinette's ear before Fe' released them. She was surprised by the suddenness of it all that all she could do was blush so hard she lost track of her surroundings. Fe' pranced around the park with the biggest smile she'd ever had hugging everyone, thanking them for being such good people and for being Adrien's friends.

"Hehe I think that's the widest I've seen her smile in my life, you really made her feel like herself you know" Adrien said still standing next to Marinette. 

Shaking her head she stuttered "H-huh, Oh yeah I knew she likes to express herself and I had some extra fabric so...you know" she shrugged sheepishly. 

Adrien smiled under his mask "Fe's going to cherish that dress, thank you for doing that, thank you for everything, you're amazing Mari, never change" he said watching his sister and friends. 

Marinette looked at him, his words hung in her ears like those of a great sage ,she would take them to heart, because she knew things about him that few others did. "You too, Adrien" she told him in a more relaxed manner than she had thought possible.

Yuri on Ice BD booklet translation (with Eiji Abiko & Junpei Tatenaka interview) - Volume 3

Had a busy weekend, but finally here is the full translation of the BD/DVD vol.3 booklet. The format is the same as usual. I wonder if Yuuri was ever able to enjoy a banquet (and remember it), lol.

EDIT: I changed the translation of the street food eaten by Guang-Hong in episode 6 after being notified that it’s actually the Chinese “jianbing”, which is a kind of crepe, and not “rice cracker” which is what “senbei” means in Japanese. Thank you very much @dragonaeve  for the input!! In Japanese it’s written 煎餅, with the same exact kanji of "senbei” (rice cracker), and though in the anime it totally didn’t look like a senbei to me I failed to notice that it was a false friend... (And to think I even researched all the other Chinese food listed in the topics section to be sure..)

The booklet has 3 parts: 1) Character introduction for Minami-kun, Georgi and Leo.  2) “Topics”, in other words random curiosities. It includes an explanation of how Japanese qualification matches work. 3) Interview with the figure skating animators Eiji Abiko and Junpei Tatenaka. TOPIC 4: Chinese Gourmet This year’s China tournament of the Grand Prix was held in Beijing. While other athletes are preparing for the match, Victor and Yuuri went to enjoy the traditional Chinese “hotpot”. Abiko: I also took part in the production of director Yamamoto’s previous work “ENDLESS NIGHT”, but I’ve always liked drawing looking at real life pictures, therefore when I was offered this job I thought that I had the necessary technical skills to do it. In the previous work there were some points I believed could have been done a different way, and I felt that in this new project we could try it out. Tatenaka: Before starting the job, I was suggested to try figure skating myself since the work was going to be about it, so I went to a skating class. Though it was just 4 days. The last time I skated was in elementary school, but (when I actually tried this time) I realized that I was going to draw something I knew nothing about. I could understand on which part of the blade you shift your weight when skating forward or backward, and that was really helpful later on. (When I watched the real life footage) after knowing that, I noticed that skaters really land on those points after a jump. They can land on the exact point even after spinning around at that speed! When I see videos where you can see them stress the landing to adjust the position so that they don’t miss the point I have goosebumps.

-Ideas to make performances look beautiful.-

T: What I realized when we started working is that scenes were very long, in the beginning. A: The director wanted to recreate a figure skating program and was determined to show the full sequence without shortening it. This means that all movements need to be connected, which takes a lot of work. T: Especially in the first part of the show, there were many sequences over 10 seconds long. You draw and draw and it never ends (LOL). A: To make skating performances look beautiful, I guess it was important to add a fair amount of inbetween animations (pictures added between key animations to supplement them). We gradually understood that using many key animations during slow movements wouldn’t make them look better unless they are very accurate. T: I had the idea to show the poses on screen for a longer time. (I was among the ones who went to Miyamoto-sensei’s choreography sessions, and) even poses that were really impressive when I saw them live only lasted an instant in the recorded footage, and it shifted to the next pose right away. If we recreated that in the anime, poses that were supposed to look impressive wouldn’t last, therefore I decided to use 2 extra key animations for some parts, so that the beautiful silhouette would stay in the viewers’ eyes. I like to draw “impressions”, and I always work thinking about what I want to show and communicate to the viewers. With figure skating I felt this all the more important. A: There are many things I found amazing about the scenes created by Tatenaka-san. Like Victor’s elegance in episode 1, isn’t that wonderful? When I watched it I was like “jeez, I need to get better too”, and he also has lots of ideas. Like JJ’s spin. I was determined to absolutely learn something from all that. T: Thank you. I like how Abiko-san draws all the characters properly. Yuuri always has an expression that fits his personality and the situation. And the spins are amazing! I couldn’t draw them satisfactorily and had to redraw them many times… I admit I was envious of Abiko-san’s soft touch that makes movements connect so smoothly. A: My favorite character is Otabek. I like how he is tough and cool. T: I like Giacometti. And JJ and Minami-kun. I think they are the ones I could figure out the best when drawing them. A: When the anime actually aired we had a huge response. Fans would write to me on Twitter, and every time I uploaded a picture I would get a lot of reactions. T: It was the first time that I had such a response, I was really surprised. I’m a fan of the baseball team Carp, and when I went to drink with my friends everyone knew “Yuri on Ice”. One person told me “a girl in my company watches it, she was praising it a lot”. It never happened to me so far!

Things to keep in mind when determining type:

-Everyone uses their extroverted function when interacting with others but if someone is an introvert, their extroverted function is not their dominant function. For example, an INTJ’s dominant function is Ni but they use Te to interact with the outside world – which may cause them to seem like an ENTJ in some social situations.

-To determine if someone is an extrovert or introvert while typing, you can use traditional methods of determining where he or she falls on the dichotomy. I.e. Look at whether they seem more energized or more drained after a few hours of social interaction (indicating extroversion and introversion respectively).

-To determine an introvert’s type, you will need to examine their dominant function as it supports their extroverted function – I.e. If someone’s dominant function is Fe but you suspect they are an introvert, you can determine if they lead with Si or Ni by turning your attention to how they support others – is it through concrete, practical methods (Si), or through gaining a thorough understanding of how the person’s mind operates (Ni)?

-If someone is an extrovert, you can determine their auxiliary function by examining what they use to back up their dominant function – I.e. If they are a dominant extroverted sensor, do they prioritize engaging with interesting new people (Indicating auxiliary Fi) or with exciting new physical challenges (Indicating auxiliary Ti)?

-Once you know someone’s dominant and auxiliary functions, their tertiary and inferior functions necessarily follow.

-In order to type someone accurately, you need to observe which cognitive functions he or she uses most consistently, across a range of different situations. Any type can call on any cognitive function if absolutely necessary – but at the end of the day, type is determined by which functions naturally and consistently provide their user with the most energy.
