Internet Celebrity and Traditional Media
‘Internet celebrity and traditional media’ is a chapter which brings together my opinion that traditional celebrity and internet celebrity are not far removed at all, however it mainly focuses on media conglomerates and brands and their relationship with the idea of internet celebrity. The chapter does this by exploring five types of celebrity: eyewitness viral stars, meme personalities, crowd puller cameos, spotted and groomed investments and weaponized microcelebrities. Overall, I still believe that traditional celebrities and internet celebrities are almost the same in many cases, however as this chapter highlights the fact that traditional media such as newspapers and films are not always compatible with internet celebrities the way they are with traditional celebrities.
Overall in fact, Abidin appears very negative in relation to traditional media and its relationship to the internet. The chapter outlines eyewitness viral stars, in which people appear on the news as witnesses to stories and then what they say or how they behave causes them to go viral. This, as she points out, can be seen as wrong to make fun of people in these situations, both because the person has not asked to go viral and because the nature of some of these stories are terrible, such as the example she gives about the witness to a fire. A clear tragedy, yet in the age of the internet the traditional media coverage has the ability to be spread around a much vaster and different demographic then it would usually reach. This is only one of the examples Abidin gives outlining the complex relationship between traditional and new media and how we can create different celebrities, exploit different celebrities or demonise different celebrities as the two fail to be compatible. Further looking at eyewitness virality, there is a large element of journalists failing to take responsibility for creating the fame these people experience. It is seen as an authentic response to the crime and if it becomes popular online, journalists cannot take responsibility. Abidin touches on this, and the fact that it is justified as the people gain merchandise and profitable opportunities through their popularity. However, many articles find there is a racist element to the people who go viral1 as most of the clips that do feature black people, and heavily stereotypical speech and characteristics which people are in turn finding humorous. This shows that traditional media can be seen as exploitative of stereotypes, however the internet accelerates this with its ability to reach huge numbers of people who can collectively comment on it can express how funny they find it. Internet celebrity, in this way, is something people are not actively striving for and could negatively damage people who become part of it.
One book review highlights the interesting nature of meme personalities mentioned in the book2 and how we as viewers often don’t think of the backstory of the meme we share and the fact the people featured in them are often unwitting, or unaware of the attention they will get. She outlines a timeline that memes take, which ultimately end up in being a ‘meme celebrity’ in which the person has managed to create a public persona outside the original meme and can profit on the fame. One example I found fascinating was the Gucci campaign in 2017 which utilised the popularity of memes and featured Instagram-esque tags on the iconic snake image, as well as creating a ‘gucci starter pack’ which is a meme that was huge on twitter at the time3. The brand is a high end luxury brand and yet they recognise that in this day and age to be as popular as possible the online presence is key as well as appearing in traditional media such as Vogue magazine. They even worked with people who make money by creating viral posts such as Sebastian Tribbie, showing that a lot of research into the meme phenomena has happened behind the scenes. In fact, this campaign is one example which shows a slight merging of traditional and new, with brands choosing to utilise both when marketing is concerned.
