i tried to figure out this coffee machine at my new job. looking through the kinds of brews that would be available or even half descent tasting. i’m not really a huge coffee person, but the smell of the building was kind of addicting. it’s like they smell that never gets old & now i feel like i have to have a cup.
i’m a financial analyst in new york, at one of the top corporate buildings in the city. by top i meant that it was a tall building.
i was very excited for this next start in my life. really, i never had the dream of a big city. however, it’s beautiful at night. the lights. it’s loud & it can be kind of comforting since i live all alone.
i moved to new york about 2 months ago. i was still not very familiar with much, but i was learning.
i was also learning to be without my ‘boyfriend’
“leave that, we’re going to be late.”
i heard a woman’s voice behind me. i turned to see one of the new hires alongside me. i hadn’t met her nor anybody i was hired on with.
it’s my first day.
i peeked at my phone & realized the time.
it was 8:52am
the meeting for the new staff started at 9am
“you want to be five minutes early to every meeting.” she said & made a fair point about the whole being 5 minutes early.
“ok, that’s fair.” i agreed, i left the coffee options behind & grabbed my purse along with my work bag. i tried my best to keep up with her speed, but she could move in her heels.
i kept walking quickly all the way until the entrance of the conference room. there were three other guys sat around the oval table.
with three more empty chairs. one of which i’m sure was for me, that girl i had just met & one other person.
i looked down at my phone
8:54am
one other guy walked in with his loose fitting suit & tie.
i decided to keep my head down & scroll through my news feed until the meeting would start.
“can i have one of those?” the guy who walked in last, asked me.
“excuse me?” i was confused at what he was asking for.
the guy pointed to one of the sharpened number 2 pencils that were placed in front of me. i hadn’t noticed they were even there.
“oh, sure.” i moved out of the way so he could grab what he needed.
i paid no more attention to him & looked at my phone again.
8:56am
“is that switzerland?”
i looked back up at the guy.
i pressed my lock button & my lock screen was a picture i had taken during summer. i went to switzerland, one of my dream spots.
“yeah.” i answered back.
“nice.” he shined a smile back at me & walked away. taking a seat a few chairs away from me. i turned my attention back to the time.
the guy sat down & positioned his chair where he could take glances at me. i hadn’t even noticed he was doing that throughout the meeting.
“welcome to carson corporation. the select few that were offered positions are all in this room. with your extensive background in each field you all studied & worked in. we’re happy to have each & every one of you here.”
talia gomez spoke, our groups point of contact, the woman who did our interviews & essentially made the decision to hire the group on.
-
we’d all received our new & spacious cubicles.
luckily, my cube was next to a window. i could see downtown & i really enjoyed this view already. so many people down below, so many different lives & situations i knew nothing about.
one of the guys in IT support had come to set up my passwords, laptop & monitors for work. once i was set up, i went to check my email. i had received an invite from talia to join the new hires group chat on the companies communication app.
i joined & looked through each name.
grace phillips
sara payne
joseph hauf
carter greene
charlie nguyen
samuel andrews
sara must be the girl that i spoke to that morning that basically rushed me away from the coffee.
in the back of my mind, i wondered who the last guy that walked in, was.
-
i spent a few hours setting up my apps & learning the software needed. i was familiar with most, but i was certainly new to some of the programs this company used.
“i’m sara by the way.”
“grace.” i put my hand out for a common courtesy handshake.
“any eye candy?” sara winked.
“oh no, not my thing.”
i had just ended a 2 year situation-ship prior to my trip to switzerland. i was in absolutely no rush for anything else, i needed my career to matter more than anything in my life right now.
“it’s everybody’s thing, whether you’re vocal about it or not.” sara assured, & she would be right.
“that’s fair.” i agreed. “but no, none.”
“hey look, i’m new to the city & i want to go out later to this rooftop bar. if you’re like me, you don’t really have many friends here yet?”
sara was right again.
“text me the details & i’ll decide later on.” i assured.
we exchanged our phones to put our numbers in.
-
there was about an hour left in the work day. i had made a lot of progress throughout the day with my work.
i continued learning the softwares. i went to sip on my water, but there was only ice left. i need to fill it up.
i went back to the kitchen & unscrewed my lid. i placed my cup to the water filter.
i waited for the cup to fill & my phone buzzed. i looked to see if it was an email or text, it was a text.
from michael, it read
“grace, please talk to me. i have a lot of regrets. i’m sorry about the past couple of years. you’re a great girl & you deserved none of that. i’m sorry you had to be the woman that was subjected to all my trauma & trust issues. whether you believe my words or not, i enjoyed every minute with you.”
i continued to read & hadn’t realized the water bottle was full. now the excess water started to spill out everywhere.
“fuck.” i said softly at the mess i had just made.
i set my cup & phone down on the island, then grabbed paper towels.
i began soaking up the water with paper towels & i saw two feet approaching me.
i didn’t bother looking up at the person. i was already embarrassed. i heard the paper towels separate & the person who had approached began to help me soak up the mess.
“you’re getting your pants wet.”
i looked up at the same guy who had acknowledged my lock screen. i then looked at my pants & the knees of my slacks had water on them.
“oh gosh.” i said softly & got up.
the guy tore more pieces of the paper towels & handed them to me. “here.” he offered & i began pressing the fabric on my knees as well.
“you’re making a mess.” he said stoic.
my phone began to buzz again, only it was a phone call. the call was from michael & the contact picture was a photo of myself & him.
my coworker that had come to help, saw my phone & who was calling. i continued to clean off my pants & reached for my phone. “thank you for helping me.”
“go take your call, i’ll clean the rest of the water up.”
“no, don’t worry about it.” i assured & continued cleaning my mess.
the phone stopped buzzing & then it began again.
i couldn’t bring myself to block michael. he was always on my mind. he hurt me, but i couldn’t let him & our memories go entirely yet.
“must be important, go grace.”
i’m guessing he met sara already & that’s how he knew my name was grace. just something i wondered after that interaction.
“i appreciate your help.” i said, really paying more attention to my phone than him.
i grabbed my phone & water bottle then walked away. he was watching as i left & i had no idea.

I’ve been thinking about parallel lines between Plato’s allegory of The Ship of Fools, a painting of the same name by Hieronymus Bosch and Ruben Östlund's  Triangle of Sadness (2022) lately.
Below is Benjamin Jowett's 1871 translation recounts Plato’s story as follows:
Imagine then a fleet or a ship in which there is a captain who is taller and stronger than any of the crew, but he is a little deaf and has a similar infirmity in sight, and his knowledge of navigation is not much better. The sailors are quarrelling with one another about the steering --every one is of opinion that he has a right to steer, though he has never learned the art of navigation and cannot tell who taught him or when he learned, and will further assert that it cannot be taught, and they are ready to cut in pieces any one who says the contrary. They throng about the captain, begging and praying him to commit the helm to them; and if at any time they do not prevail, but others are preferred to them, they kill the others or throw them overboard, and having first chained up the noble captain's senses with drink or some narcotic drug, they mutiny and take possession of the ship and make free with the stores; thus, eating and drinking, they proceed on their voyage in such a manner as might be expected of them. Him who is their partisan and cleverly aids them in their plot for getting the ship out of the captain's hands into their own whether by force or persuasion, they compliment with the name of sailor, pilot, able seaman, and abuse the other sort of man, whom they call a good-for-nothing; but that the true pilot must pay attention to the year and seasons and sky and stars and winds, and whatever else belongs to his art, if he intends to be really qualified for the command of a ship, and that he must and will be the steerer, whether other people like or not-the possibility of this union of authority with the steerer's art has never seriously entered into their thoughts or been made part of their calling. Now in vessels which are in a state of mutiny and by sailors who are mutineers, how will the true pilot be regarded? Will he not be called by them a prater, a star-gazer, a good-for-nothing?
How many parallel lines do you see between the film, the painting and the actual allegory. To what extent do you think that the director was inspired/influenced by these works?

#TriangleOfSadness. This was a profound watch that somewhat reminded me of Parasite with its own twists, turns, and social commentary. The film is many things, but boring isn't one of them. It's a dark comedy that comments on gender roles and social classes and takes audiences on an interesting journey. At first, I thought this was going to be a heavy drama given the title. While it did feature a bit of that, it pokes fun at the reality of people playing the gender role card when it's only convenient for them. It also comments on the roles assigned to us by society based on our race, which interestingly enough was at the core of the second and third acts. That said, Dolly De Leon is the major catalyst that drove the film home. I don't want to say too much, but she's indeed the captain of this feature and she deserves the recognitions she's been receiving. Pull though, Golden Globes! Pull through! Read a couple of reviews as well and now I'm really curious about Ruben Ostlund's other films. The Square and Force Majeure were repeatedly mentioned so I'm adding these to my list. Overall, it's a film that's fun to watch because of the extent they took to magnify the roles we all play. In truth, I watched it two more times right after the first one because it was just refreshing. This one's a 10/10 for me!! https://www.instagram.com/p/CmStOVPPrKh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#sbiff #hollywoodéaqui #everythingeverywhereallatonce #livingmovie #allquietonthewesternfront #tarmovie #womentalking #thefabelmans #thebansheesofinisherin #glassonion #triangleofsadness #dicadefilme #awardsseason #oscar2023 #originalscreenplay #adaptedscreenplay (at Santa Barbara, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpnofv1v7_v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

O longa…
