Book Review: Corrupt
Devil's Night (Book 1) by Penelope Douglas
Tumblr media

Erika
I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.
His name is Michael Crist.
My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.
But I noticed him.
I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.
Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.
Because he’s finally noticed me.
Michael
Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.
My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.
Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.
In my city.
Unprotected.
The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.
We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.

Enjoyable but Also WTF?
Going into this book, I already expected to read some messed up things but I am slightly taken aback that the level of messed up did not reach my expectations? For example, that whole revenge scheme? Taking away everything felt so mild and other than the assault that really disappointed me (in terms of the boys disappointing me), the only thing the boys did that I thought was edging towards evil was that box of remembrance. Maybe because I am a rather sentimental person so I cannot imagine what kind of hell I would rain down if someone destroyed my box of remembrance. Unfortunately, that "act of evil" was not even a planned event, it happened coincidentally just because box was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I would have called that pathetic.
Moving on to the attempted assault, I lost so much respect for Rika, honestly. I knew it was a misunderstanding from a severe lack of communication and so much miscommunication, but her forgiving them for attempting it was just, pathetic. Rika really should have more backbone in this regards and at least get some revenge. Instead, she slept with Michael. Utterly pathetic.
Something else I was not a big fan of. The boys constantly described Rika as fearless and a little screwed up but I don't see that at all. What I saw was a privileged girl with kinks and some amount of guts, that's all. Personally, Alex was a much better badass than Rika. Rika's character arc is something I don't quite like in the female characters I read about.
Corrupt might have been full of flaws but on some level, I enjoyed my reading time with it. Rika's relationship with Michael was boring but I loved reading about Kai. The way Douglas wrote the scenes of Kai with either Rika or Michael were filled with so much tension, it was so fun to read them. I guess that's probably why the threesome was unexpected but I do not mind it.
Oh, before I end this review. Trevor? Man, that boy is one of the most pathetic people I've ever read about.
Rating: ★★★☆☆
P.S.: Do not let my over-usage of pathetic take away the fact that I still ultimately enjoyed the book.

Corrupt Review
Corrupt: 6/10
When I started the book, it took me a while to get immersed into the plot and world. Michael Crist is a bland character compared to Rika Fane, so seeing her in love with him pained me. The 4 horsemen were unbearable in this first book. They were so entitled and arrogant that I almost stopped reading the book. Also, some of their comments and attitudes were actually disturbing. Damon was disgusting and made bile creep into my throat. In conclusion, I hated most of the characters.
The last part with the boat and Trevor was very unexpected, and not in a good way. What threw me off was Damon helping him with almost killing his friends. I think it was a very unneeded part to the book, yet it added some higher stakes throughout the series.
Another thing I didn’t like was the age difference between Erika and Michael. During the present events, it was fine since she was over age, but in the flashbacks it was literally illegal. Why would a college student care what a 16 year old is doing with her life?
Now, to the good parts. After reading a few pages, I was interested in these guys. Not because I liked them, but because they were acting so stupid it was funny (especially Michael). The smut was good, if not excellent. It was an interesting dynamic to say the least. Erika Fane is a girlboss that carried her entire relationship. I also liked the friendship between the horsemen. Something about friend groups will always do it for me, even if they’re assholes.

Naima's thoughts on "Corrupt" By Penelope Douglas (minor spoilers ahead!)
Tumblr media
(1) The Plot - (8/10)
Erika Fane has always been in love with her ex-boyfriend's older brother Michael Crist but he's ignored her for years. Now he's back and he has secret plans for her along with his three best friends who were thrown in jail because of her.
This book wasn't what I expected and I mean that in a good and bad way, I started reading cause if the romance but ironically that was one thing I didn't like about this book, but I kept reading and enjoyed it because of everything else, the Horsemen, rika's growth, michael and rika's backstory, the mystery of what happend three yeas ago, it was all so interesting and batshit crazy from start to finish!
(2) The Characters - (9/10)
Erika - Bad ass bitch, but has terrible taste in men.
Michael - Great character, HORRENDOUS boyfriend. I wish the book was written solely from his perspective cause his dynamic with the Horsemen and his backstory were my favorite parts of the book.
Kai - problematic king 💖💖💖 he's so sweet but so fucked up I love it 😁
Will - he made me laugh and I like how he's less sadistic than Damon but still pretty fucked up.
Damon - basically satan but I kinda love him for it lol
Alex - A good friend to Rika and an interesting character all on her own.
Trevor - needs to die in a fire.
(3) The Romance - (- 80/10)
RIKA STAND TF UP. She and Michael are THEEEEEE worst couple I have ever read in any novel lmaoooo like....good God Michael treats her like dog shit and she is just endlessly horny for him while the whole time HE PLOTTING HER DAMN KIDNAPPING 😭 Though i like Michael, he is a massive hypocrite always telling Erika "STAND UP FOR YOURSELF! DON'T BE A VICTIM!" but also being EXTREMELY controlling over her. I'm also verrrry uncomfortable at how she is so obedient to a man who treats her like shit. Her character arc is her learning how to stand up for herself but then she'll drop on her knees in a split second cause Michael told her to??? The book tries to make it look like she's making her her choice but BABY GIRL choosing to obey a trash boyfriend is not empowering it means you have no respect for yourself 😭
I honestly wished she chosed Kai, but the next book is about him and another girl so 💔
(4) The smut - (2/10)
*sigh* this is a rough one cause the smut is rather cringey and I CANNOT UNDERESTIMATE HOW AWFUL THE MAIN COUPLE IS their sex scenes aren't bad but when Michael and Rika are thinking horny thoughts about each other I bust out laughing lmao.
Overall, the plot is insane in a great way ;), the characters are great, but the romance made me want to puke 😁
⭐️6/10⭐️

AAW presents “UNSTOPPABLE” held in Chicago, IL on 11/25/17
1. Oi4K (Jake & Dave Crist) vs. Air Buds (Stephen Wolf & Trey Miguel) ***1/4
2. Besties in the World, PACO, & Colt Cabana vs. Connor Braxton, Jake Something, Curt Stallion, & BRUBAKER **1/2
3. Fred Yehi vs. Shane Strickland ***1/2
4. Myron Reed vs. Flip Gordon **3/4
5. WRSTLING (Trevor Lee & David Starr) vs. AR Fox & Eddie Kingston **1/2
6. Sammy Guevara vs. ACH ***3/4
7. AAW Heritage Championship: Zema Ion vs. Penta El Zero M(c) ****1/4
8. AAW Heavyweight Championship: Jimmy Jacobs vs. Rey Fenix(c) ***3/4
I haven’t seen any AAW in quite some time (I think the last show I watched was Killers Among Us), so this show was the perfect one to get me back into things. It was a really fun card, with nothing approaching a bad match and a whole lot of really good action. Everything on here was enjoyable in its own way, and had the usual white hot Chicago crowd, but my favourite of the night had to be the Heritage Title match between Penta and DJZ. This was just a crazy, 10 minute sprint that, despite its unhinged nature, actually told a good story; DJZ hit a huge dive on Penta as he was making his entrance, and just kept going for risks in an attempt to beat the unbeatable man with Zero Fear. Now, had this gone any longer the 10:12 it did go, it would have been preposterous given what they were doing out there (which included Ion hitting a balcony dive), and for what it was, I thought it was perfect. DJZ dethroned Penta after a springboard DDT off the middle rope as the place went crazy. Also of note was ACH slapping the shit out of the fundamentally loathsome Sammy Guevara en route to victory in a great little hard-hitting and high-flying match, Shane Strickland's win over the debuting Fred Yehi in a very good wrestling contest, the Crist brothers victory in the opener over Wolf and Miguel was admittedly just a series of big moves, but in many ways the perfect opener, and the main event in which AAW Champ Fenix, Thunder Fire Drivered his way to victory over the returning Jimmy Jacobs in another great outing. All in all, I’d say this show is well worth a look if you get the chance.

PWG Pushin' Forward Back Match Ratings:
Sammy Guevara vs Rey Horus ***3/4 Young Bucks vs Unbreakable F'n Machines **** Keith Lee vs Trent? vs Lio Rush ****1/4 Sami Callihan vs Dezmond Xavier vs Jake Crist vs Dave Crist ***3/4 Ricochet vs Trevor Lee ***3/4 Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs Chuck Taylor *****
Show Rating: 9/10
One of the top tier PWG shows of all time. Contender for one of the best shows of the entire year. Possibly the greatest PWG match of all time. Pushin' Forward Back is a fantastic wrestling show. The diversity in the styles of matches, the amount of matches and the time they were given all helped make the show. I really loved that there were only six matches. It gave matches the time to breathe and tell a story, rather than a bunch of getting shit in and going home. Going singles, tag, three-way, four-way, to kick off the show was so smart because it made everything feel fresh. The main event was one of the absolute best matches of the year. The ONE downfall of the show was the lack of guest commentators. Excalibur is great but guests can help bring more color to the matches. If there was better commentary I surly would have given this show the full 10.

PWG Nice Boys (Don’t Play Rock and Roll) Match Ratings and Thoughts
Brian Cage vs. Keith Lee vs. Sami Callihan 3.75/5 (***) - Crazy spotfest with two men that are 250+ (and Sami Callihan). There was dives, power moves, crazy near falls, and just a lot of fun to be had. Keith Lee had a fantastic PWG debut with this one, and BRIAN CAGE WON A MATCH IN PWG WITH THE FALCONS ARROW. THAT WAS HUGE!
OI4K (Dave Crist & Jake Crist) vs. The Chosen Bros (Jeff Cobb & Matthew Riddle) 3.5/5 (*** 1/2) - The PWG tag division is stacked right now, and teams like Chosen Bros and OI4K are a good reason why. Just a great tag match from great teams made of great wrestlers.
Lio Rush vs. Trevor Lee 2.75/5 (** 3/4) - This is the match you'd expect from these two in PWG. Fast paced, lots of spots, and fun to watch. Wasn't too invested this one though. The singles matches on this show were the weak points.
Dezmond Xavier vs. Shane Strickland 2.25/5 (** 1/4) - A double PWG debut, with both men giving a good showing, but like I said, singles matches were the weak points of this show, but this wasn't a good match for me. Both men are talented, but had a generic flippy guy match here. Wasn't a fan and couldn't get invested in this match at all.
Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent) vs. The Leaders Of The New School (Marty Scurll & Zack Sabre Jr.) 4.75/5 (**** 3/4) - Just a fantastic tag match. The Leaders Of The New School are a fantastic heel tag team, and Best Friends are a fantastic face tag team. LoTNS beat down Trent, Chuck made the hot tag, and they beat down him too, but Best Friends never quit. It was awesome. Wasn't a spot fest, just a well paced tag match that told a great story with four great wrestlers.
PWG Tag Team Title Three Way Match The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson) (c) vs. Matt Sydal & Ricochet vs. Penta el 0M & Rey Fenix 4.5/5 (**** 1/2) - A PWG spotfest in it's purest form, and it was awesome. There was dives, gimmick infringement, a frantic pace, and so many spots. Just a batshit crazy main event, and one that kept me watching closely until the end.

AAW: Art, Wisdom and Other Things Randy Doesn't Understand
I think it is difficult to argue the statement that All American Wrestling provides Chicago with the best wrestling. It does not have the perceived outlaw persona of Freelance Wrestling or Resistance Pro, and that is because it does not need it. You buy a ticket, and you are rewarded with the best wrestling showcase the region has to offer.
AAW currently seems to have an over abundance of riches. It may sound foolish to say there is a downside to showing off the best, but the promotion seems to lack identity. The best wrestlers will inevitably get signed to exclusive deals. When that happens, the most talented members of the undercard should be expected to step up to fill the vacant roles. Unless you can just find main eventers from other territories which is what the promotion that developed Tyler Black is ironically doing.
AAW feels like a YouTube Wormhole that you can check out in person, instead of a team you come to cheer on. As pro-wrestling's premier Cubs fan, I loved cheering on the team for 36 years as they developed into world champions. There were times that I wished ownership would just buy a title, but if that occurred, I would then be bitching about any time they did not win a title. That would make me a Yankee fan who is not from the five boroughs. To those fans, they are not your team.
Who can stand someone who does not think you need to work to win? As a jaded Gen-Xer, that may come across as a implied question about the younger generation, but the wrestling audience right now are millennials. AAW seems to have their fingers on the pulse of the audience, and the dollar makes anything tolerable.
Art is either a luxury or a gamble, and taste determines what you want. I am always trying to create, and the money I spent on failing to produce my motion picture "Main Event of the Dead (I am willing to send out treatments of the zom-com pro-wrestling screenplay by e-mailing [email protected])" shows that I like to gamble. This may leave me predisposed to be frustrated at the lack of AAW creative direction. But, the less work you put into make money, the wiser you are. So perhaps you can argue that RPW and FLW may provide better wrestling, but Danny Daniels and AAW demonstrate the wisest wrestling.
The Card:
Paco defeated Connor Braxton.
Jake Crist picks up the win from Myron Reed, Laredo Kid and Joey Janella. With all of the dives, did the AAW faithful catch all at least four Ace Crushers.
Trevor Lee steals one from Colt Cabana. I feel when you face Cabana, you should not focus on your own comedy style. Lee should have been bringing out his X-Division stuff for his opponent to work against. That brings out the best in Cabana.
Davey Vega & Alex Daniels score the fall against Detective Dan Barry & Lt. Bill Carr, and Trey Miguel & Stephen Wolf. This is where the show started to feel redundant. The crowd may have been thinking the same since "...Dive" was the only chant they brought to this match.
Keith Lee earns the hard fought win over Donovan Dijak. This match completed the Rip Roger's Indy Equation. If "Both These Guys" and "Fight Forever" were not shouted in the first four match were expressed here. It is just proof that AAW's booking is superb. Lee vs. Dijak was 20 minutes of showing how bumps are overrated. I need to rewatch Lance Storm and Jerry Lynn. Did Dijak have to suffer so many chops to get away from flat backs?
Michael Elgin teaches Former World Champion FKA Jack Swagger what the indies are all about. This match shows why all Indy shows need an intermission. Elgin is awesome which makes up for Swagger being behind the Indy curve. Better placement of the bout could have hid this better from the audience. If Swagger goes to NJPW and catches up with the style, WWE will regret how they let a wrestler with a football player structure leave the company.
AR Fox and Rey Fenix retain the AAW Tag Team Championship from Lio Rush and Shane Strickland's challenge. I think this could have been the main event instead of another one of Sami Callahan's brawls. If I was able to get away from the hospitality business more often, I might see that Callahan fighting a challenger all over the venue is not the only main event AAW has to offer.
This was Rush's debut, so I understand his team not getting the win, but I am getting worn out seeing how the luchadors from Lucha Underground will not take falls. Bringing in a gearless Juventud Guerrera to do the favor for the holder of the "Bestest in the World" does not shake this vibe. But the money that Penta and Fenix bring to the promotion may be why every AAW show is otherwise loaded. I do not think I can win an argument of wisdom versus art.

MozCon 2018: The Initial Agenda
Posted by Trevor-Klein
With just over three months until MozCon 2018, we're getting a great picture of what this year's show will be like, and we can't wait to share some of the details with you today.
We've got 21 speakers lined up (and will be launching our Community Speaker process soon — stay tuned for more details on how to make your pitch!). You'll see some familiar faces, and some who'll be on the MozCon stage for the first time, with topics ranging from the evolution of searcher intent to the increasing importance of local SEO, and from navigating bureaucracy for buy-in to cutting the noise out of your reporting.
Topic details and the final agenda are still in the works, but we're excited enough about the conversations we've had with speakers that we wanted to give you a sneak peek. We hope to see you in Seattle this July 9–11!
If you still need your tickets, we've got you covered:
Pick up your ticket to MozCon!
The Speakers
Here's a look at who you'll see on stage this year, along with some of the topics we've already worked out:
Jono Alderson
Mad Scientist, Yoast
The Democratization of SEO
Jono will explore how much time and money we collectively burn by fixing the same kinds of basic, "binary," well-defined things over and over again (e.g., meta tags, 404s, URLs, etc), when we could be teaching others throughout our organizations not to break them in the first place.
As long as we "own" technical SEO, there's no reason (for example) for the average developer to learn it or care — so they keep making the same mistakes. We proclaim that others are doing things wrong, but by doing so we only reinforce the line between our skills and theirs.
We need to start giving away bits of the SEO discipline, and technical SEO is probably the easiest thing for us to stop owning.
In his talk, he'll push for more democratization, education, collaboration, and investment in open source projects so we can fix things once, rather than a million times.
Stephanie Briggs
Partner, Briggsby
Search-Driven Content Strategy
Google's improvements in understanding language and search intent have changed how and why content ranks. As a result, many SEOs are chasing rankings that Google has already decided are hopeless.
Stephanie will cover how this should impact the way you write and optimize content for search, and will help you identify the right content opportunities. She'll teach you how to persuade organizations to invest in content, and will share examples of strategies and tactics she has used to grow content programs by millions of visits.
Rob Bucci
CEO, STAT Search Analytics
"Near me" or Far: How Google May Be Deciding Your Local Intent for You
In August 2017, Google stated that local searches without the "near me" modifier had grown by 150% and that searchers were beginning to drop geo-modifiers — like zip code and neighborhood — from local queries altogether. But does Google still know what searchers are after?
For example: the query [best breakfast places] suggests that quality takes top priority; [breakfast places near me] indicates that close proximity is essential; and [breakfast places in Seattle] seems to cast a city-wide net; while [breakfast places] is largely ambiguous.
By comparing non-geo-modified keywords against those modified with the prepositional phrases "near me" and "in [city name]" and qualifiers like “best,” we hope to understand how Google interprets different levels of local intent and uncover patterns in the types of SERPs produced.
With a better understanding of how local SERPs behave, SEOs can refine keyword lists, tailor content, and build targeted campaigns accordingly.
Neil Crist
VP of Product, Moz
The Local Sweet Spot: Automation Isn't Enough
Some practitioners of local SEO swear by manual curation, claiming that automation skips over the most important parts. Some swear the exact opposite. The real answer, especially when you're working at enterprise scale, is a sweet spot in the middle.
In this talk, Neil will show you where that spot is, why different verticals require different work, and some original research that reveals which of those verticals are most stable.
Dana DiTomaso
President and Partner, Kick Point
Traffic vs. Signal
With an ever-increasing slate of options in tools like Google Tag Manager and Google Data Studio, marketers of all stripes are falling prey to the habit of "I'll collect this data because maybe I'll need it eventually," when in reality it's creating a lot of noise for zero signal.
We're still approaching our metrics from the organization's perspective, and not from the customer's perspective. Why, for example, are we not reporting on (or even thinking about, really) how quickly a customer can do what they need to do? Why are we still fixated on pageviews? In this talk, Dana will focus our attention on what really matters.
Rand Fishkin
Founder, SparkToro, Moz, & Inbound.org
A man who needs no introduction to MozCon, we're thrilled to announce that Rand will be back on stage this year after founding his new company, SparkToro. Topic development for his talk is in the works; check back for more information!
Oli Gardner
Co-Founder, Unbounce
Content Marketing Is Broken and Only Your M.O.M. Can Save You
Traditional content marketing focuses on educational value at the expense of product value, which is a broken and outdated way of thinking. We all need to sell a product, and our visitors all need a product to improve their lives, but we're so afraid of being seen as salesy that somehow we got lost, and we forgot why our content even exists.
We need our M.O.M.s!
No, he isn't talking about your actual mother. He's talking about your Marketing Optimization Map — your guide to exploring the nuances of optimized content marketing through a product-focused lens.
In this session you'll learn:
Data and lessons learned from his biggest ever content marketing experiment, and how those lessons have changed his approach to content
A context-to-content-to-conversion strategy for big content that converts
Advanced methods for creating "choose your own adventure" navigational experiences to build event-based behavioral profiles of your visitors (using GTM and GA)
Innovative ways to productize and market the technology you already have, with use cases your customers had never considered
Casie Gillette
Senior Director, Digital Marketing, KoMarketing
The Problem with Content & Other Things We Don't Want to Admit
Everyone thinks they need content but they don't think about why they need it or what they actually need to create. As a result, we are overwhelmed with poor quality content and marketers are struggling to prove the value.
In this session, we'll look at some of the key challenges facing marketers today and how a data-driven strategy can help us make better decisions.
Emily Grossman
Mobile Product Marketer & App Strategist
What All Marketers Can Do about Site Speed
At this point, we should all have some idea of how important site speed is to our performance in search. The mobile-first index underscored that fact yet again. It isn't always easy for marketers to know where to start improving their site's speed, though, and a lot of folks mistakenly believe they need developers for most of those improvements. Emily will clear that up with an actionable tour of just how much impact our own work can have on getting our sites to load quickly enough for today's standards.
Russ Jones
Principal Search Scientist, Moz
Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics
Russ is our principal search scientist here at Moz. After a decade as CTO of an agency, he joined Moz to focus on what he's most interested in: research and development, primarily related to keyword and link data. He's responsible for many of our most forward-looking techniques.
At MozCon this year, he's looking to focus on cutting through bad metrics with far better metrics, exploring the hidden assumptions and errors in things our industry regularly reports, showing us all how we can paint a more accurate picture of what's going on.
Justine Jordan
VP Marketing, Litmus
A veteran of the MozCon stage, Justine is obsessed with helping marketers create, test, and send better email. Named an Email Marketer Thought Leader of the Year, she is strangely passionate about email marketing, hates being called a spammer, and still gets nervous when pressing send.
At MozCon this year, she's looking to cover the importance of engagement with emails in today's world of marketing. With the upcoming arrival of GDPR and the ease with which you can unsubscribe and report spam, it's more important than ever to treat people like people instead of just leads.
Michael King
Managing Director, iPullRank
You Don't Know SEO
Or maybe, "SEO you don't know you don't know." We've all heard people throw jargon around in an effort to sound smart when they clearly don't know what it means, and our industry of SEO is no exception. There are aspects of search that are acknowledged as important, but seldom actually understood. Mike will save us from awkward moments, taking complex topics like the esoteric components of information retrieval and log-file analysis, pairing them with a detailed understanding of technical implementation of common SEO recommendations, and transforming them into tools and insights we wish we'd never neglected.
Cindy Krum
CEO & Founder, MobileMoxie
Mobile-First Indexing or a Whole New Google
The emergence of voice-search and Google Assistant is forcing Google to change its model in search, to favor their own entity understanding or the world, so that questions and queries can be answered in context. Many marketers are struggling to understand how their website and their job as an SEO or SEM will change, as searches focus more on entity-understanding, context and action-oriented interaction. This shift can either provide massive opportunities, or create massive threats to your company and your job — the main determining factor is how you choose to prepare for the change.
Dr. Pete Meyers
Marketing Scientist, Moz
Dr. Peter J. Meyers (AKA "Dr. Pete") is a Marketing Scientist for Seattle-based Moz, where he works with the marketing and data science teams on product research and data-driven content. Guarding the thin line between marketing and data science — which is more like a hallway and pretty wide — he's the architect behind MozCast, the keeper of the Algo History, and watcher of all things Google.
Britney Muller
Senior SEO Scientist, Moz
Britney is Moz's senior SEO scientist. An explorer and investigator at heart, she won't stop digging until she gets to the bottom of some of the most interesting developments in the world of search. You can find her on Whiteboard Friday, and she's currently polishing a new (and dramatically improved!) version of our Beginner's Guide to SEO.
At MozCon this year, she'll show you what she found at the bottom of the rabbit hole to save you the journey.
Lisa Myers
CEO, Verve Search
None of Us Is as Smart as All of Us
Success in SEO, or in any discipline, is frequently reliant on people’s ability to work together. Lisa Myers started Verve Search in 2009, and from the very beginning was convinced of the importance of building a diverse team, then developing and empowering them to find their own solutions.
In this session she’ll share her experiences and offer actionable advice on how to attract, develop and retain the right people in order to build a truly world-class team.
Heather Physioc
Director of Organic Search, VML

Mike Ramsey
President, Nifty Marketing
The Awkward State of Local
You know it exists. You know what a citation is, and have a sense for the importance of accurate listings. But with personalization and localization playing an increasing role in every SERP, local can no longer be seen in its own silo — every search and social marketer should be honing their understanding. For that matter, it's also time for local search marketers to broaden the scope of their work.
Wil Reynolds
Founder & Director of Digital Strategy, Seer Interactive
Excel Is for Rookies: Why Every Search Marketer Needs to Get Strong in BI, ASAP
The analysts are coming for your job, not AI (at least not yet). Analysts stopped using Excel years ago; they use Tableau, Power BI, Looker! They see more data than you, and that is what is going to make them a threat to your job. They might not know search, but they know data. I'll document my obsession with Power BI and the insights I can glean in seconds which is helping every single client at Seer at the speed of light. Search marketers must run to this opportunity, as analysts miss out on the insights because more often than not they use these tools to report. We use them to find insights.
Alexis Sanders
Technical SEO Account Manager, Merkle
Alexis works as a Technical SEO Account Manager at Merkle, ensuring the accuracy, feasibility, and scalability of the agency’s technical recommendations across all verticals. You've likely seen her on the Moz blog, Search Engine Land, OnCrawl, The Raven Blog, and TechnicalSEO.com. She's got a knack for getting the entire industry excited about the more technical aspects of SEO, and if you haven't already, you've got to check out the technical SEO challenge she created at https://TechnicalSEO.expert.
Darren Shaw
Founder, Whitespark
At the forefront of local SEO, Darren is obsessed with knowing all there is to know about local search. He organizes and publishes research initiatives such as the annual Local Search Ranking Factors survey and the Local Search Ecosystem.
At MozCon this year, he'll unveil the newest findings from the Local Search Ranking Factors study, for which he's already noticing significant changes from the last release, letting SEOs of all stripes know how they need to adjust their approach.
