Sweet lolita through the years
Part 2
2005-2008 (ish) “midschool” sweet
Moving out of the oldschool era we start to see sweet Lolita becoming more like we know it today. While solid color mainpieces and simpler styling were still common, printed pieces and more accessories were becoming more popular.
This transitional period between oldschool and the iconic 2010s ott era is often left out in conversations about Lolita history despite it really having its own interesting trends.
In general this era was very glamorous in its trends- gyaru was a huge influence on the trends and you can absolutely see that influence.
This is the period where balancing colors and having elaborately themed coords started. Brands really started to have their own styles and identities.
As a sort of in between of heavy prints and solids appliqué prints and screen prints were very popular at the time. Brands put a lot out and the community caught onto this trend very quickly
I also often see coords from the early part of this era mislabeled as oldschool despite them already being quite modern. I do think there’s overlap, especially around 2005-2006 but familiarizing yourself with the styling differences makes it pretty easy to see the differences. The “new” way of coording at the time was far more sweet, more elaborate, more detailed, and more accessorized. THIS is the period where tea parties, modern usakumya designs, baby’s heart bags, and many other iconic designs that are often labeled as oldschool were made. Mislabeling them as oldschool both harms the ability to properly emulate oldschool and erases the history of the transitional period between then and the ott era. Wrist cuffs were also becoming common place at this point.
Printed socks started to become both more elaborate and more popular though lace topped otks stayed pretty common and popular in this period.
Jewelry got more detailed and cutesy. Plastic jewelry started to become more common, however more detailed metal jewelry was the majority of what you’ll see. Jewelry and socks that matched the motifs of dresses started to become the standard at this point.
Other accessories were very varied though mini Alice bows were really the most popular and common. A lot of fun and experimental headpieces like plastic headbands, mini hats, and the always iconic napayoshi bunny bonnet were made in this time.
Novelty bags and heavily printed totes also started to become more common and popular. Strangely it seems that plush animal bags fell out of popularity until the tail end of this era moving into the ott craze. Printed hand bags were the most popular, but some shaped novelty bags were still made- especially towards the end of this period.
This is one of the first Lolita eras where hair and makeup became a big part of styling a coord. With the popularization of gyaru you could see many influences in how Lolita’s did their hair and makeup both in this period and in the 2010s. Though the makeup was simpler and typically didn’t veer into full gyaru territory until the later part into the 2010s
More accessories like wrist cuffs, faux collars, brooches, gloves and little chains that clipped from one jsk strap to the other were seen at this time too. Faux fur in details was extremely popular with some brands even including fur trims on their mainpieces. Pearls, polkadots, charms, and florals were all also rampant.
Motifs were all over the place at the time but some of the most popular / common were: poodles, cakes / sweets, polkadots, Alice / card / trumps, berries, crowns, cats, houndstooth, florals, and crowns!
Thanks so much for reading, if you’re interested in reading more see: part 1 part 3

1st Week; 5 pieces that every Lolita wardrobe should have, regardless of style
Hii ʕ ᵔᴥᵔ ʔ,
As research for this challenge, I went through my oldest blog and found out that this is actually the third time I´m attempting this. And that I actually forgot what my first lolita piece was, but that´s a story for another time. I didn´t want to go for the obvious - petticoat, white blouse, etc. What do you consider universal essentials? 1. Earmuffs Can you tell that I´m freezing right now? :D Earmuffs are not always practical. They get in a way, you can´t hear through them, and at least I hate using them at the same time as my headphones. Unfortunately, they are so damn cute. And accesible. And I feel like they balance every outfit out so nicely. You have nothing to put on your head? You don´t feel like doing an elaborate hairdo? Well, if it´s cold outside, here are earmuffs! 2. Fan If you have the oposite problem, a fan might help you. Simple black, pink, or one with patterns can be easy to get. You can go for more elaborate one, almost like from Versailles. Some european courts even had a fan language – you can learn some phrases with you friends and use it at meetups, just make sure no one else understands before you sign anything scandalous! :D
3. Brooches You wanted to be casual, but not so casual? Or you don´t feel OTT enough, yet your arms, neck and head don´t have any spare space? Well, cute brooche is your best friend. You can go for elegant pearls, little leaf (I do think about Fellowship of the Ring a lot) or something outragiously extravagant, it´s up to you! And since not everyone wears them, it can gather some attention from fellow lolitas and maybe even become a great conversation starter.
4. Go-to headpiece I feel like I covered this with earmuffs, but I think this is way more helpful whole year around. Do you have any piece, as simple as can be, that you always just throw on? It doesn´t have to go with every single one of your pieces, but it would be helpful. For me, it used to be Margaretha Head Bow, now I prefer simple black headbows. It can be a small bonnet, head-eating bow, or anything that makes your coords feel more complete.
5. Huge collection of socks and tighs I used to hate getting those under Christmastree, now I specifically request this every year. It´s just so helpful! Not just simple black OTKs in many pairs, but colourful (remember the red thighs trend?), with patterns, lace even… not to mention few matching ones if you are into prints. I think that everyone, even outside the lolita spectrum should have a collection of sock and tighs!
Source
Right now, Paris is getting a little bit warmer. Which is nice, but I´m still looking for new black blazer. It´s such a staple of 80s goth. I already have at least three coats, so it will be a nice change.
Even chilly weather can´t stop us from having a picnic. I went this Monday, maybe chatched a flu, but it was worth it! We went to Jardin de Luxembourg and then to Gibert, this nice 5 floor bookshop. They had amazing renditions of classics as Metamorphosis from Kafka and even a Dracula, but I bought French conversation instead. Then we had another picnic near Seina, complete with a jazz band playing behind us. I don´t know if I have ever felt so peaceful.
I hope you are doing good! What is your favourite thing about autumn?

Ideje lenne.

Some Jkk are too scared to be serious, but this is how I felt ever since Jk went live and reacted to Jimin after he replied Me too on Jimin's miss you post. So one could say cool, he misses Jimin and he's promoting his solo work like a friend and bandmate would. HOWEVER, that is not what JK did. He turned it up a notch and PURPOSELY blushed, giggled, kicked his feet, stared with heart eyes, gushed and listened to love songs in between switching videos. This to me, is flat out OTT baiting if he doesn't feel some type of way about Jimin, cause he purposely acted that way knowing the camera was on him. I have had Jkk tell me its not baiting, right, if he's in love its not, but if not, to me it was suggestive in his actions, meant to get a reaction to him and Jimin and it worked and only he knows why. Even worse would be if he he's not queer but knows Jimin is and how Jimin use to feel about him and did that. I don't believe this though. I believe Jk is queer and I think the man is in love with jimin. That said, Locals were even talking about that live. Not to mention it dropped during Jk's CK clip/ambassador announcement. So they were trending with 250,000 or more tweets cause of that ad on top of his Jimin live. Ever since then I have been observing Jikook too and then JK kept coming on and doing it. Kept bringing up Jimin, even their past trip. I also look at the timing, when JK's new hang out buddy Tae was busy with his girlfriend Jennie everytime she came back from tour and Tae would go MIA. I just hope it wasn't a case of Jk just looking for company cause he was lonely cause he got ditched by his older bro for his girlfriend. TK would be hanging out while Jennie was gone, but then Jk would always show he was alone when Jennie came back. Maybe its why Jimin kept turning Jk down. Maybe he knew it. Who knows at this point. One thing I learned is Tae is proof you can bait fans into thinking you are dating your bandmate by being over the top clinging and namedropping every 5 seconds, while you have an entire secret girlfriend for 2 years no one knew about til a hacker got angry. Look at festa dinner. His clinginess to Jk had tkk declaring they were married and 3 days later he was caught with jennie in Jeju and confirmed by her leaked pics. A whole mess. I would have left town if I were a tkk and never looked back. What a slap in the mouth (deserved tho, they definitely deserved that slap to reality). I just don't ever want to see this with jikook and it turn out to be the case. I might throw up.
He's leading Jimin on??????
Funny how I used to think Jimin was the one leading him on 😂
"It's worse if he's not queer and he acts like that knowing hoe Jimin feels about him."
I think the same and actually used to say the same thing since day one of their ship inception but in reverse order I guess.
Can you DM me? I would like to go back and forth on this with you. I don't enjoy writing lengthy blogs at this point in my life.
Here's JKs profile
Shy teenage boy thrust into the midst of boys he older boys he respects and admires. He's still trying to figure out what romantic feelings are, what he finds attractive, sexually provocative, and what his sexuality is.
Here comes a hyung closer in age to him that looks- androgynous, is good with expressing himself, isn't shy to speak out and perform infront of everyone. At night he's nice to cozy up to and snuggle- and sometimes they do that naked.
It feels good but he's not sure what it is he's feeling. He just knows they spend a lot of late nights doing nothing in particular and he enjoys it. They have a lot in common, and he's emotionally supportive and creates space around him for him to be himself.
He's falling but he doesn't know it yet.
Then there's the hyung in particular, goofy as fuck messing with things he doesn't understand. He's tempting faith and he doesn't know it. Each time he pokes at this younger Maknae thinking he's in control he's not. Now he's acting a fool pretending he's on top of things. But when he pretends kisses him, he looses his balance. His heart is beating in his chest faster than he can handle.
But he's stubborn. He's not in love and it's not even a crush. Yet he can't stay away either. He can't stop. The teasing back and forth, the push and pull is getting to him. Now doesn't feel like joke when he's being teased back. Now it feels like micro rejection and he stuck wondering why this younger friend keeps pushing away. He wants to be close.
They both dancing around naked fires.
The little boy is getting a hang of it. He's sure he's not into girls. He's sure there's something between him and his beautiful hyung. He's recklessly falling and he's not afraid to fall. He's ready to quit. He can be a dancer. He doesn't have to sing. He doesn't have to be in a band. He doesn't have to hide who he is.
The hyung on the other hand, this his dream. He's worked hard to be here. He works even harder than any one else just to be on the team. He can't risk it. He's not impulsive, he's not young and stupid. He's a hyung. People have expectations of him and he can't let any one down.
He writes it on his ribs- nevermind. But it's easier said than than. He's falling and this is the moment of his youth. It's epic. But he's worried the curtains will eventually fall and they'd have to face reality.
To the best of my knowledge this is Jikook.
Do you see where in this narrative of mine Jungkook is the one stringing Jimin along??
It's always been Jimin with the ball in his court really😩
I'm gonna shed a few tears, I'll come back and read the rest of your post- can you break it into two asks so it's easier for me to respond to the 2nd part separately?

these are my problems with color bass
1. there has been no central collective/label for a year now. Rushdown, the label created by Chime, was the source for a vast amount of inspiration as well as a way for legitimately innovative, interesting, or just plain good songs to get discovered with the Rushdown Presents volumes. Rushdown has been on hiatus for a year, and nothing has came to take its place - the bigger artists have mostly migrated to Monstercat Uncaged, though some have done songs with NCS and others. other kinds of bass music have swaths of labels actively supporting them, like OWSLA, Never Say Die, and Disciple for brostep.
2. it is a subgenre carried, creatively, by trends. the world learned of it from Virtual Riot, who then shared how the color bass doggo VIP of REDLINE was done - by moving every non-drum sound through instances of Zynaptic Pitchmap. this led to large amounts of people hopping in for "use plugin, make song good like vr!!" and the decimation of Pitchmap for like a year. now, recently, Xynth Audio's Chroma is the new hot plugin. another FFT pitching plugin, but with a cleaner algorithm and a vastly lighter load on CPU. it was pushed by the heavily-involved artist Nasko, followed by artists like Paper Skies and Chime praising it. a disgusting amount of amateur color bass is just [bass sounds then fed through 1 plugin to colorize] as well as every atmosphere, leading to an incredibly homogenous, uninteresting sound. that's just for the people who make their own sounds! on the other hand...
3a. the reliance on previously established artists' sounds to make their own music. so, SO many color bass tutorials from smaller creators are "take a handful of Sharks or Chime or Skybreak or KERO basses, arrange them, (optional) add phase dispersion, add OTT, cut out <100hz, add your own sub. then take a bunch of Sharks ear candy and pads, layer them under the basses. add drums" and that's fucking it. genuinely, 90% of all color bass tutorials are like that. and that's just tutorials, what people are teaching - imagine how many songs by these people or those they've taught have done the exact same thing. it's completely generic to the core, and has led to an intense stagnation.
3b. overwhelmingly, some of the only people teaching color bass sound design are the most popular artists and typically behind paywalls. Chime and Au5 are the biggest of this, w/ Chime's very densely-packed Patreon full of sample packs and tutorials and Au5 having a years-ongoing School of Bass masterclass as well as selling individual track breakdowns for songs like Cryptochrome. information exists for free, of course - Au5's "6 Ways to Color Bass" is very popular due to its breakdown between every type of method, but it lacks detail or application beyond "i have these basses made already and here's what they sound like with [x]". it also completely ignores the source basses, meaning half the battle is totally blind. Convexity and Chime especially have videos (Patreon-exclusive unless you just so happen to have links to the unlisted youtube videos :3c) with what arelikely the best at delving into the what and why, with Convexity's having a better focus on the underlying chords and composition. Skybreak has good Patreon videos too, going over specific sound design techniques like Harmor crystally basses and weird pitched glitches.
#just needed to like. Say that#fuck i need the School of Bass for The Other Side by Au5 and Chime#and the breakdown of Cryptochrome#soulseek fails me here </3 because theyre like 1 hour+ videos that are like $60 each at LEAST i think#i chose not to say anything about the melodic riddim side. not because i like it#i really dont but thats not a thing i can point to - i just dont like riddim lmfao

What’s your opinion on the kind of pop, anachronistic period drama trend?
It’s obviously not new (e.g. Coppola’s Marie Antoinette), but I feel like, post Bridgerton, nearly every new period or costume drama series has a contemporary soundtrack and heavy-handed anachronisms (dialogue, behavior, etc.).
In the past few months, there’s been The Buccaneers and My Lady Jane, with uber spunky, plucky heroines and imo both shows feel so dated and banal now, very 2010s feminism. Like I can’t believe Apple TV adapted Edith Wharton and had her characters twerking at a ball?
I do like it in some cases—The Great works for me in a way My Lady Jane hasn’t, despite both being comedies. And I do like that all the aforementioned shows have done diverse casting. I like that The Great does “color-blind” casting like in theater; I appreciate Bridgerton’s “post-racism” alt-history approach much less. Weirdly, The Buccaneers kind of straddles both, acknowledging race and racism but also not making a big deal of it—why mention it at all then?
I’d love to see a Joe Wright-esque period drama with actors of color and some thoughtful anachronisms (like how Elizabeth wears her hair down), but an original score instead of Olivia Rodrigo. I guess there’s Sandition and Tom Jones, but PBS is so low budget compared to the streamers.
I love it! The majority of the shows (and movies) that have done it I enjoy. Honestly, I wouldn't say that the current trend has much to do with Sofia's Marie Antoinette because it's been so long and because, while I enjoy that movie for what it is, it is very... aesthetic without a lot of interest in the characters and personality. Sofia had very little to say, besides "Marie Antoinette normal teenage girl hence the contemporary references" which even back then was little... Yeah girl. We know?
Whereas I feel these works are often very heavy on referential dialogue, wacky characters, etc.
You could say that something like The Tudors is influential because it presented itself as very modern in its marketing, it didn't truly care about *looking* period (I'd say that My Lady Jane looks more period out of context at points)... But it didn't actively say "I don't give a fuck, we are consciously folding the 21st century in". Which is what makes things different now.
Honestly, to me the clear predecessor to the big trend now is Reign. And I'm not saying that's because the show was this massive hit (it wasn't lol), obviously. But you don't have to be a massive hit to forecast a trend. You just have to be seen by the right people, who may not even like your show! They just like your concept enough to pick from it. Reign incorporated the instrumental covers of modern songs first, Reign didn't give a fuck about period-accurate costumes at ALL (and often compensated by pulling from designers like Alexander McQueen), Reign snarked about history while gleefully doing its own thing.
I disagree with you quite a bit on My Lady Jane. I don't personally find the feminism of the show very OTT--while Jane wants to be an independent and free spirit and not get confined to a specific role, that's really pretty typical for young historical and fantasy heroines. She has to have SOMETHING to fight against. The show has zero issue with creating female characters who are pretty fucked and dimensional, which I think is one of the first signs that a series isn't straw feminist. Mary is a fucking LUNATIC and a horrible person, and though the show makes it clear that most of this really is because of the abuse she suffered at her father's hands, it doesn't excuse her behavior. Jane's mom is delightfully self-centered and avaricious... and she also cares for her daughters, though she's still happy to sacrifice them. And she gets a fun little... semi-romance? He's in love and she likes to fuck, I guess? ADORED her, and it's a really unique role for a middle-aged female character. This is also really the show I've seen present Elizabeth I in the least YOU GO GIRL kind of way. She hasn't had a ton of limelight just yet, but as of now she's kind of... just a girl.
The Buccaneers is very boring and largely about female suffering in the guise of feminism, but I find it sits more on the Bridgerton end of things, in which it dips its toes in anachronism (heavily) without wanting to really get into the fun of it. It's a hook, but it's not something the show really has a lot of wholehearted joy in it, which I found Reign did, as well as The Great, and to a much lesser extent The Serpent Queen. Plus something like Rosaline, a movie that really gets overlooked but has a lot, tonally, in common with My Lady Jane (if not in terms of fantasy).
To me, I like the full-hearted, balls to the wall swing nine times out of ten. I want the contemporary music, and a lot of the time, I'd prefer it to be the actual track itself versus a strings version at this point. I want the snark, I want the asides, I want the good time. The Great has PROBABLY done it best for me at this point. And I will say, to me the music is a big part of it? So an original score without any more modern music wouldn't work for me here. I also don't really need it to be a Joe Wright-esque vibe; if I want that vibe, I would often prefer full sweeping romance.

Is the ask game still going? If it is 2,3, and 6
2. What was your first piece?
So my first ever piece was an awful Gothic Lolita & Punk JSK that I bought in camden when I was 14. I've shared it on here before, and tbh I don't really count it as proper lolita.
The first real lolita piece I bought was this Bodyline dress:
3. What is your most recent piece?
I've bought (& traded) quite a few pieces recently. One of those was Strawberry Princess OP by Angelic Pretty
6. How has the way you wear lolita changed since you’ve been in the fashion?
So as you can see from the photo above, my style has changed quite a bit since I started wearing lolita. When I started, I was 14/15 and relied on saving up pocket money to buy bodyline which was basically all I could afford. Since I was new, it was very easy to get caught up in what's popular, so in the early days I was very influenced by the OTT sweet trend and by Princess Peachie since she wore a lot of bodyline. I realised that the ultra sweet look wasn't for me and slowly veered more classic, trying historically inspired coords for a while. In 2014 I kind of realised that trying to follow the trends when I couldn't really afford to wasn't much fun, and that what I loved most was oldschool. That was what I'd originally fallen in love with as a kid. Plus at the time old school was dirt cheap because it wasn't very popular, which was perfect for me as someone who didn't have much money.
Obviously since then I now wear exclusively old school, I wear sweet gothic and classic but tend to avoid ultra sugary sweet, and my wardrobe is majority 2nd hand brand compared to mostly new bodyline. Also my makeup skills are better lmao.
Funnily enough I still own and use the handbag in the photo above in coords today lol.

📰 Focus People: Gucci Global Ambassador, Actress Park Gyuyoung... A Chameleon Who Blends into Characters
[Sisun News - Reporter Yang Wonmin] Actress Park Gyuyoung and the 'face genius' Cha Eunwoo's drama 'A Good Day to be a Dog' continues to be a hit worldwide. After ranking number one on Korea's Netflix TV series, it consistently remains within the top three, and it also ranked first in drama on Japan's OTT platform U-NEXT. Additionally, on the global OTT platform Rakuten Viki, it debuted in first place in 93 countries including the United States, Brazil, and India during its opening week, showcasing the prestige of K-dramas.
Park Gyuyoung, who has become a trendsetting actress, did not always dream of acting. She attended Busan Foreign Language High School and then entered Yonsei University, majoring in Clothing and Textiles. Park's foray into the entertainment industry came about by chance. While at university, she modelled for the cover of "College Tomorrow," and JYP Entertainment approached her with a casting offer after seeing her work. Although such a sudden career change could have been met with parental opposition, she instead received their strong support and embarked on this path.
Later, Park Gyuyoung made her debut as the leading lady in the music video for singer Jo Kwon's song "Crosswalk," garnering attention. Even before the music video's release, there was curiosity about who would be the female lead opposite EXO's Suho, whose participation was already known. Park Gyuyoung, who was an actor trainee at JYP Entertainment at the time, left a strong impression with her calm and poignant portrayal of a breakup, marked by her characteristically soft ambiance.
After a series of special appearances and minor roles, Park Gyuyoung began taking on main and supporting roles. She built her recognition through web dramas and then through appearances in tvN's "Bring It On Ghost," JTBC's "Just Between Lovers," "The Third Charm," and SBS's "Nokdu Flower."
