Status: Extant, Vulnerable
Time and Place: From 1.8 million years ago through today, from the Calabrian of the Pleistocene through the Holocene
Pinyon Jays are known from the Southwestern United States
Physical Description: Pinyon Jays are beautiful, distinctive blue birds. They range from 26 to 29 centimeters in length, making them somewhat small Corvids. The males tend to weigh more than the females. They are a beautiful blue color, fairly uniform all over their bodies, though they do have white and blue striped throat pouches. They have beady black eyes and long, black beaks. These beaks are very pointed and sharp, and the nostrils on them are completely without feathers - hence the meaning of the genus name. The juveniles tend to be more grey and become blue as they get older.
By Seabamirum, CC BY 2.0
Diet: Pinyon Jays have evolved, specifically, to eat the seeds of Pinyon trees for food. These seeds are very heavy and not great for wind distribution, so they rely on animals to eat them and disperse them. As such, the Pinyon Jay fulfills this role. They’ll eat other seeds too, and supplement their diet with insects and other arthropods and grains.
By John Drummond
Behavior: Pinyon Jays live in large, cooperative, synchronized flocks - of up to five hundred individuals - which move around their ecosystem together in search of their specialized food, usually gotten on the ground or in seed feeders. They make a wide variety of calls, probably more than fifteen of them, allowing them to coordinate their activities and recognize different individuals in the flock. The begging calls of juveniles are also unique per individual, allowing it to be clear to the adults who exactly needs food. These unique calls for each individual Pinyon Jay means that the individuals can recognize each other completely across these giant flocks. They make long, alarm calls that are combinations of other calls; and they can make very long rambling songs for twenty or more minutes at a time. These giant flocks will roam over large areas, moving nomadically in search of their favorite flocks.
By Noah Strycker
Pinyon Jays do cache food, allowing for seeds to be grabbed when needed during development, courtship, nest building, egg laying, and incubation. They’ll fly many miles in order to cache seeds, usually in the Fall, and they’ll rely on these cached seeds during the cold months. They will often move the seeds as well, in order to avoid theft from other birds. They’ll cache them in the ground, usually buried in dead needles and twigs - so don’t throw out or pick up such piles!!! Let your fall leaves lie on the ground!!! They will switch to caching in trees when the ground gets too hard to dig into. They remember the location of their caches for at least a week, though it is possible they can remember these locations for longer collectively as a flock.
By Albert Linkowski
These jays begin breeding in the early spring and continue through to autumn if food is particularly plentiful. They form monogamous pairs, possibly for their entire lives (at least as long as ten years), and they make nests together in very synchronized colonies as flocks. Previous children do help build nests, but it’s not as common as in other species. Both parents will build the nests out of a platform of sticks, with a middle layer of coarse grasses woven together, and the nest lined with finely shredded plants, feathers, and hair. They’ll usually place these nests in pine trees. The pair will lay between 2 and 5 eggs which are incubated by the female for two and a half weeks. Both parents will feed and take care of the chicks in the nest for three weeks. The fledglings then gather together in creches which are guarded by a few adults, as foraging resumes back to normal; the parents will return to their fledglings with food every hour. The young depend on their parents for two to three more months. They are then juveniles, learning from the rest of the flock for a few more years. Sometimes these juveniles will move to other flocks, but they usually stay with their parent flocks for their whole lives. Females will begin breeding at 2 years old, and males at 3 years, and they’ll create many broods throughout their lives. They can live for as long as 16 years, in the best of conditions.
By Hal & Kirsten Snyder
Ecosystem: Pinyon Jays stick to woodlands and forests where there are pinyon-juniper trees. They’ll also go to chaparral and scrub oak forests, as well as locations of ponderosa and Jeffrey pines. They can also be found in city and town gardens. Pinyon Jays are highly preyed upon, though their flocking and colonial nesting helps to protect them; they also use pinyon, juniper, and ponderosa pine trees for cover, and rarely stray too far from these sites unless needed to for caching and food storage. These birds also mob potential predators, such as Great Horned Owls, Sharp-Shinned Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Red-Tailed Hawks, and Common Grey Foxes. They are also preyed upon by ravens, crows, Steller’s Jays, Abert’s Squirrels, Rock Squirrels, snakes, gray foxes, and domestic cats. Sometimes, these predators pull females from their nests while they’re incubating the young.
By Seabamirum, CC BY 2.0
Other: Pinyon Jays are extremely common birds in their range, but they have undergone extremely rapid population decline due to the loss of its specific woodland habitat. The pinyon-juniper woodland is decreasing due to drought and tree-related diseases. Unfortunately, Pinyon Jays are very nomadic and social, which makes estimating the exact population of these jays fairly difficult. They do use bird feeders in urban and suburban habitats, which means they may be able to get by as their habitat decreases. Interestingly enough, fossils of this bird are known from the last Ice Age, indicating that they did not evolve recently, but have been a fixture of the Southwestern United States for millions of years.

Snow and cold temps slow down Cameron Peak fire, downgrade evacuations — if only for a few days
#cameronpeakfire🔥 🎃 🐢 ⛷
Colorado News
Up to 16 inches of snow is falling Tuesday on the massive Cameron Peak fire west of Fort Collins, slowing its growth and offering much-needed respite to crews managing the blaze that tripled in size over the weekend.
It’s not the biggest wildfire currently burning — that title goes to the Pine Gulch Fire, which recently became the largest wildfire in recorded state history. Still, the Cameron Peak fire grew from about 34,000 acres and 5% containment on Saturday morning to Tuesday’s measurement of 102,596 acres and 4% containment.
The Cameron Peak Fire’s perimeter as estimated by aircraft infrared technology. (Source: Cameron Peak Fire StoryMap)
The Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association announced on Twitter Tuesday that it cut power from its Rustic substation at the request of the fire’s incident commanders. Amy Blunck, vice president of member and government relations, noted that while 435 of the co-op’s members — which include households as well as businesses — are affected, the substation’s service area is already part of mandatory evacuations.
The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office ordered residents and businesses in the Lady Moon and Red Feather Highlands areas to evacuate Monday evening, but those were downgraded from mandatory to voluntary on Tuesday morning while other evacuations were lifted.
OUR UNDERWRITERS SUPPORT JOURNALISM. BECOME ONE.
As of Monday, no structures have burned, though crews have not been able to assess some parts of the fire’s footprint.
In Rocky Mountain National Park, where the fire has run over the park’s northern boundary, multiple roads and backcountry areas were closed to the public on Sunday, including Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road. Additional crews have joined to focus specifically on the park and may “directly engage the fire if they can do so safely,” according to Tuesday’s update.
Cameron Peak fire public information officer Paul Bruggink said that this weekend’s rapid expansion was “not a surprise,” given the hot and dry weather, steep terrain and extensive fuels including beetle kill trees. Officials estimate the fire will continue into October, perhaps until Halloween, despite Tuesday’s cold front bringing precipitation to wet down vegetation, raise the relative humidity and slow the fire’s progress for a few days.
“If we had a succession of these heavy snowfalls, then we could put this thing to rest,” Bruggink said, but for the fuels that remain unburned while they’re covered with snow, “that has very real potential to ignite again and go.”
MORE: “A lot of structures under threat”: Cameron Peak fire continues its rapid expansion
The cold front will give crews a chance to further assess last weekend’s fire activity and recharge to prepare for a warm, dry forecast going into the weekend. Bruggink noted that the storm brings new safety concerns for crews, including wet, snowy roads and wind chill, though air quality will improve as precipitation pulls down the ash that blanketed the Front Range. Wildfire smoke and other forms of air pollution may exacerbate the local impacts of the global coronavirus pandemic.
The Cameron Peak fire started on Aug. 13 near Chambers Lake. Officials suspect it was human-caused and are asking for tips to more specifically determine how it began. The fire has ventured into the footprint of the 2012 High Park Fire, which burned more than 87,000 acres and destroyed at least 259 homes, and killed one woman.
Gov. Jared Polis enacted a 30-day statewide open fire ban on Aug. 19, in an effort to prevent more wildfires from starting. The executive order prohibits campfires and fireworks, but camp stoves and home barbecues are permitted. Nearly 85% of wildfires begin as a result of human activity.

2020 Best Nursing Homes - Colorado
ElderPerfect a leading publisher on senior healthcare across the United States, today announced the recipients of the Best Nursing Homes in Colorado for 2020. These awards are designed to recognize providers based on their ability to consistently deliver excellence in the areas of Health Inspections, Quality of Residence Care, Penalties and Staffing. We’ve evaluated over 229 facilities, of which 80 (35%) met our top rating. This report marks the Gold Standard in terms of care for seniors. 0 Ranked Best Facilities 5/5
US Standard vs. Best Facilities
Average Number of Beds: 106 vs 95 Average Occupancy: 81% vs 83% Average Health Inspection Rating: 2.82 / 5.00 vs. 3.90 / 5.00 Average Government Rating: 3.01 / 5.00 vs. 4.49 / 5.00
Rating Methodology
Health Inspections Every year, the government assigns inspectors to conduct a formal review of nursing homes for regulatory purposes to meet the mandates outlined for Medicare and Medicaid, this aims to measure and improve the safety of residents across providers. Facilities may also be inspected when complaints are submitted or based on a reported incident. When noncompliance is identified, the facility is served a citation that indicates which regulation that was identified, along with the severity of the incident. Nursing homes are subsequently required to execute a program of resolution in order to meet compliance. Some scenarios require enforcement actions to be applied, such as a civil monetary penalty or withholding of payment(s), to incentivize resolution in a timely manner. Penalties Facilities are applied 2 types of penalties due to non-compliance / accumulation of incidents. Civil penalties are monetary fines that may be applied to a facility based on citations / infractions identified during a review. The severity of a penalty is defined primarily by the size and frequency of the infraction. Quality of Residence Care There are 3 types of resident care ratings, but for this exercise, we primarily focused on the overall quality measure rating. The quality measures (QMs) include 17 data points that are derived from clinical information reported by the respective nursing home and also from Medicare claims data submitted for payment. Ratings are calculated for the QM domain using the 4 most recent quarters for which data are available. A nursing home receives points contingent on performance on each measure (weighting distribution is not equal). Staffing Staffing research is submitted regularly by the facility and is adjusted for the requirement of the facilities residents. For each of registered nurse staff and total staffing, a 1 - 5 rating is applied according to definitions established for each category. These ratings are subsequently combined to assign an overall staffing rating. As an example, to get an overall staffing rating of 5 stars, nursing homes must earn a rating of 5 stars for both registered nurses and total staffing. Nursing homes could also be assigned a 1 star rating should they not have a registered nurse on-site daily, and do not submit staffing data, or which the data cannot be verified.

PEOPLE ARE BETTER THAN RECORDS : this is the end (pt 25)
Florian Claude, 35 ans, Metz.
PS : une citation complémentaire me semblait nécessaire. Tirée d'un héros que l'on partageait entre frères (Geo, l'amitié déplace les montagnes, sache-le) :
« Je donnerais ma vie pour mourir » (Francesco Dellamorte)

Researchers outline policy approaches to transform fire management
‘Successfully transforming fire management requires people working together across jurisdictions, and a commitment to long-term goals,’ said Courtney Schultz, associate professor of forest and natural resource policy at Colorado State University. Credit: Bill Cotton/Colorado State University
More
Wildfires are natural hazards that are becoming more intense and extensive with climate change. Scientists have previously described what major transformations should take place to contend with these fires, including the need to adapt to more fire on the landscape, change the way communities are designed, allow for more prescribed fire and thin fuels like brush and smaller trees.
“How do we design governance and policy approaches to get us to where we need to go?” asked Courtney Schultz, associate professor of forest and natural resource policy in the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University.
She answers that question, in part, in “Collaborations and capacities to transform fire management,” published online by the journal Science on Oct. 3. Schultz teamed up on the study with Cassandra Moseley, research professor in the Institute for a Sustainable Environment at the University of Oregon.
“Successfully transforming fire management requires people working together across jurisdictions, and a commitment to long-term goals,” said Schultz, who serves as the director of the Public Lands Policy Group at CSU. “It means people have to live with fire and smoke now, when the easier and, sometimes, the safer choice is to put fires out, and to not light fire. In governance terms, it requires a lot of collaboration and collective action. Community leaders and land managers need long-term vision and commitment.”
Moseley said that organizing human resource capacity, interagency agreements and planning in advance are critical to ensuring that prescribed fire and other work can happen in the right place at the right time. “Sometimes conditions for a prescribed burn in one place may be good, but you may have firefighters off in another area battling a fire or doing other work,” she said.
Through their research, the scientists found a number of innovative and collaborative projects across different levels in several states. Schultz said the paper recommends policy approaches that can expedite these types of collaboration.
Innovative approaches across the West
One example of collaboration in fire management is the Rio Grande Water Fund in Northern New Mexico. The project, originally launched by The Nature Conservancy, brings together new funding sources and diverse partners to reduce fire hazard and protect water supplies.
Partners on this project include the Greater Santa Fe Fireshed Coalition, which has been working to get more prescribed fire done in the forest. Other organizations have found creative ways to build capacity, like bringing in young people from underrepresented communities to teach them skills in fire management.
Colorado also has some active collaborations that provide road maps for others.
Land managers on the San Juan National Forest have been conducting larger prescribed burns over the last several years, thanks to leadership commitment and collaboration with partners like The Nature Conservancy, Chama Peak Land Alliance and the Mountain Studies Institute.
“U.S. Forest Service personnel are committed to getting prescribed fire on the ground on the San Juan, and they work actively with many partners to make it happen,” said Schultz.
In addition, California has some noteworthy projects. In the Sierra National Forest, the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program brought together former litigants, environmental groups, tribes and industry to pursue strategies to support more forest restoration work.
California also has a statewide Fire MOU Partnership to advance the use of prescribed fire. In recent years, the governor organized a fire management task force, which recommended doubling the amount of prescribed fire in the state.
“State-level leadership has really made a difference in a lot of places,” said Schultz. “California approved using money from the revenue they get from their carbon market to support fuels reduction teams, and they are creating teams that can do mechanical thinning in forests and prescribed fire across the state. The California Air Resources Board is also a major partner in those efforts.”
Schultz said that fire management is not a “one size fits all” proposition because landscapes and climates vary so much, from state to state.
“Everyone involved has to figure out what’s going to work, and what’s needed, from the city to the state to the federal level,” she said. And that is why Schultz and Moseley have underscored that collaboration and capacity-building are the keys to finding a path forward for living with fire.
“It’s great to see our work on governance contribute to the conversation,” she added. “There’s research in the social and political sciences to inform how we think about these issues, and there’s also a recognition that fire, like other climate-driven disturbances, has become a tremendous challenge in the U.S. and around the world. This will be a critical area for governance research going forward.”
