Brutal Cold
As so often happens particularly here in the east of the country, we have a couple of spells of unusually mild weather in February and March, and the garden bursts into life. Then the wind swings round to the east, all rain ceases and the temperatures plummet. We have had three nights of -2C which does damage to young shoots although mercifully the young growth on the roses has not been touched.
Consequently all growth has stopped - nothing much has moved in the greenhouse although I did manage to pot on the biggest of the tomato plants yesterday plus Cosmos Psyche White and some Hollyhocks which I have grown primarily for the Plant Stall when the garden is open on 5th May. The sweet peas in the cold frame are more than ready to go out but I shall just wait until mid week when the night temperatures should lift to 7C
Despite the cold we put the dahlias in the borders on Friday as they will not shoot above ground before the weather warms up. The dahlias in the greenhouse are through and as they are new this year and therefore small I shall dot them through both the main borders for pin pricks of interesting colours.
The dryness is worrying so I have kept the broad beans well watered and this week will have to give the rhubarb a soak as it is about ready to be picked. The stream is very low for the time of year and there is no sign of any tadpoles. The swallow is still on his own and we hope each day she will come - maybe this week when its warmer - it must have been jolly cold perched on the beam in the garage for the last three nights with no one to cuddle up to.
We have a hen pheasant nesting in the bank of the small pond - I was about to deadhead the stinking hellebore - our native hellebore - when I spotted her so backed off quickly - photo below. Also a photo of the lovely cowslips which have grown from seed sown in the meadow mix 7 years ago - they are now getting a real hold - also plenty of rattle now looking very strong. Other photographs are the Doyenne de Comice Pear in full blossom and the pots on the terrace giving a welcome burst of colour.
Mavis ran in her first working test yesterday - a Novice at Sandringham run by the Norfolk Gundog Club. A huge field of 42 so it took quite a long time, but it was lovely to catch up with friends who I only see in the summer training and competition months. Also wonderful to be in such lovely surroundings with a great mix of ground - open grass, woodland edges, bracken and water. Thanks to HM for letting us use the park. Mavis surprised me, I was very nervous running her after several years of reliable Inca but she rose to the occasion and got a much better score than I could have dreamed of. We came home very happy and jolly cold (6C most of the day) and have entered another test for mid May hoping she will not come in season! Two evenings of training this week to keep the ball rolling.
Tomorrow I am off to collect the last of the roses for clients from Beales at Attleborough - gives me a chance to catch up with the team there, and then on to Fordham Nursery near Newmarket to pick up lavenders for another job, which gives me the chance to bid them farewell - after 23 years of being my main wholesale supplier, the nursery site is being sold by the owners for building - another valuable loss of habitat and the loss of good friends too. This means I have to seek out another supplier for the bulk of my trees shrubs and herbaceous plants so I am off down to Woodbridge at the end of the month to meet up with some people who sound hopeful. The world of plant nurseries is a bit tenuous at the moment, this is the second of my suppliers to close this spring.
Jobs to do at the moment - deadhead the hellebores - each stem to the base unless you wish them to seed everywhere. Plant out dahlias if they have been in store and put in plant supports for them now so you remember where they are and dont have to clamber about when everything else is burgeoning. Once we get a bit more warmth this year vegetable sowings can resume and potatoes should appear anytime so will need earthing up. Check that none of the early spring shrubs dont need a quick shape up and prune, and as the weather has held growth back it is just still OK to pollard or coppice willows, dogwoods and hazels. Still keeping the mower on quite a high cut until the weather warms up and we get rain - the grass will get stressed if overcut at this time.
