Cityscape including Charles Bridge and Prague Castle
Prague: 16-18 Nov 2017
I took a weekend trip to Prague and although I didn’t have much expectations of it, it turned out to be one of those trips that really made me re-evaluate the way I saw things. Mostly because this city was really different from the Western European cities I’ve been to, so I didn’t get bored so easily with the cityscape. Compared to the very standard West-European landscapes, Prague was more colourful and unique in the sense that the building colours were really pretty, but not in the ghetto-way a lot of other east-european cities are (e.g. Sofia, Bulgaria, which was kinda more hipster/gentrifying hood)
One of the things I loved the most was probably how well-maintained some of the history is, because historic icons like the palace and the Charles Bridge remain an important feature of the area. In particular the castle resides in the west side of the bridge, and you can really see the contrast between the two sides of the river, one being more historic and the other being more modern, but each being charming in their own way.
It was also really cool to see the Prague castle for myself, which was mentioned in urban design for the whole enclosure/exposure experience.
Prague was mostly beautiful to me because of these fairytale-like elements which made the whole city seem super magical, and that was the most memorable part for me :) It really made me rethink the whole Im-so-bored-of-European-cities thing because its true that a lot of them look the same (same old low-rise buildings and town squares and churches) but then you have these unique landmarks and styles that just make each city unique in its own way.
Tredelink/Tradelink? BAE.
Also not forgetting to mention the AMAZING food in Prague!! Chimney cakes are not something I thought I’d love, but something I found myself enjoying a lot more than I would. I’m quite glad I stepped out of my comfort zone this trip and tried more local cuisine, e.g. the dumplings (not Asian dumplings sadly) and fried cheese, which was something I once again unexpectedly loved!!
Overall Prague was a really interesting city & I’m really excited for my next eastern European travel—Austria, Slovakia and Hungary!
