SUMMIT DAY #Kilimanjaro! January 9, 2018. 5,895 meters/19,341 feet. Take everything hard I have done in my life, wrap it up in a not-so pretty bow then multiply by 10 million and you still won’t be close to how hard I found the ascent in the middle of the night to Gilman’s Peak to be. The power of the human spirit is felt in Rwanda. It is just as measurable as the temperature of the African sun or the volume of the tears I wept today or the speed of the plane that got me here. It is tangible. It is palpable and it will change you if you have the courage to come here and see it and learn about it for yourself. The one thing you cannot measure perhaps is pain. One person’s pain vs another or one country’s pain over another but measuring the ability to overcome that pain and the ability to cultivate love rather than hatred, can be done. While today began with tears as I learned about the genocide of 1994 of the Tutsis where in a mere 3 months almost a million people were murdered by their own countrymen, the day did not end in tears. Why? Because I learned that my hope of a world defined by truth, compassion, tolerance and forgiveness is possible. It can be done. It has been done. If the Rwandans can do it, we all can. Here I stand with a survivor of this atrocity - my new friend Denys - who was orphaned at age 11 along with his younger brothers and sisters. They survived as they hid with 20 other people in Room 123 of Hotel Rwanda. And Denys told me “if we [the Rwandans] learned one thing, we learned that when you are pushed down that far, you understand never to push someone else down again”. Murakoze Rwanda. Haiti and the FIFA World Cup - The flag flies high over Haiti 🇭🇹 but not the red and blue one! This week it has been in large part the Argentina 🇦🇷 flag as apparently half of Haiti prefers them but what flag is flying high today? The green and yellow of Brazil 🇧🇷. It’s FIFA World Cup time and the Haitien people believe in one thing and one thing alone and that is either 1) that Brazil 🇧🇷 is their team and their team is going to beat Belgium 🇧🇪 or 2) Argentina 🇦🇷 is their team and Brazil 🇧🇷 had better lose to Belgium 🇧🇪! The Brazilian flag is everywhere you look here. Covering the hoods of the cars, on the rear view mirrors of the motorcycles, on their helmets, flying high on their stores and homes! All business shut down and the locals clamored into the streets halting traffic to a stand still in front of any TV or radio they could find (and there are not many here). What an experience!
