A quick visit/worktrip to Rotterdam

One of the perks of writing for Time To Momo (travel guide company) is that every year the authors get invited at their headquarters for a fun day of workshops, sightseeing and testing new food and drinkspots. Since two years the offices are located in Rotterdam, and they couldn’t have chosen a better place.

So last week I combined this worktrip with a day of wandering through this amazing city. It was my 3rd visit to Rotterdam and I can’t get enough of it. The mix of modern and classic architecture, the many restaurants and bars, the beautiful shops and the magnificent skyline at the border of the Maas river.

If you’re planning a trip to Rotterdam and you’re looking for tips, you can read my previous blogpost on the highlights of the city. Also, here are some new spots I discovered.

Lokaal serves coffee, breakfast, lunch and pastries. They try to buy their products as local as possible. Also, the location is quite stunning. It’s a former railway viaduct which has been transformed into a hip hangout place with shops and bars.

A great place to shop fashion and interior items, art, jewelry, furniture etcetera is Collective by Swan. 20 young entrepeneurs sell their designs in this beautiful space in the trendy Witte de Withstraat. Craving a cold beer? Visit Biergarten Rotterdam, close to the Central Station. Next to craft beers you can order snacks from the BBQ.

We ended our day at vietnamese restaurant Little V. The place has intimate corners and feels like an urban jungle, thanks to the trees inside and the round wooden tables. Here you can sip from your exotic cocktail and enjoy the delicious food.

I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

1 week until we set sail!

1 week today and we’re off, I remember when we first decided this is what we were wanting to do! Back then it felt like we had a life time to plan everything and get sorted, handing in notices at work and thinking ‘still another fucking month of this shit!?’ and now it feels as though it has came around very quickly and for the first time in the process I feel unorganised!!

So our plan of action has always been quite straight forward.

Australia, I have 2 brothers over there and its a beautiful free country.

We then had to decide how to get there, what flights to get etc. We decided that Australia wasn’t the be all and end all, we got out a map and looked at the route we would be flying if we flew direct. After looking at that we decided we would basically be leapfrogging a lot of places that we would like to see and experience.

We decided to make our journey to Australia an experience in itself:

1st May - Fly to Amsterdam from Liverpool, Train to Rotterdam - 3 nights in Rotterdam.

4th May - Train to Eindhoven, flight to Krakow - 4 nights in Krakow.

8th May - Flight to Berlin, flight from Berlin to Honk Kong - 7 nights in Hong Kong

15th May - Flight to Kuala Lumpar, flight to Sydney, Sydney to Brisbane.

17th May - Arrive in Brisbane

So that first part of the journey was planned, visas accepted, flights, luggage and connections all sorted and paid for.

Now for packing.

How do you pack up your life into a bag to take to the other side of the world!? I think I have the easier task out of me and my girlfriend for this. I’m lucky not to have many possessions, since the age of around 21 I have lived away from home and really moved out with only a bag of clothes or two and that hasn’t really changed since then.

We have sold what we can sell and get some money for, basically anything not needed such as winter jackets, footwear and other bits and pieces, every penny has helped us get this far!

So we have 20kg each in a backpack and everything i’ve read basically says pack about a weeks worth of clothes as you will no doubt pick things up along the way too which suits me fine as i don’t have much more than that anyway! But for Cara, a weeks worth of clothes for her includes 2/3 changes a day with 25 hair products to maintain her wonderful curls and 17 skin products because shes allergic to life itself!

Then we have all our electricals such as Ipad (to maintain the blogs), Kindle, GoPro, phones and then chargers for each of these!

Anyway I’ve made a start with the packing and so far so good, just have to wait and see how much the weights come to and move things around if needed!

It’s starting to get real now and that’s very exciting, we keep getting the same question of ‘what’s your plans once your over there?’ and really my reply has been the same for a while now which is we don’t really have one, I’m trying to go into this with as little expectation as possible and see where we end up. Our ideal scenario is, we arrive on the gold coast, we have 2 weeks in a hostel there when we first arrive. We are wanting to look for a suitable van to live in, either a campervan or a tradie van that we can turn into a campervan, so the first 2 weeks will be spent looking for vans and enjoying the gold coast. Hopefully we find a suitable van for a decent price and then we are on the road either stealth camping or on campsites and enjoying the country. If we find somewhere we really enjoy we can stay there and maybe look for some work for a few month, make some money and then be on our way again.

It really doesn’t matter what we plan or what we want to do as I’m certain we will be inconvenienced at some point and that’ll change our path!

What kind of museums do you enjoy?

We aren’t generally big on museums, but some locals recommended we check out the SS Rotterdam. With 11 decks and a massive engine room, there was plenty to explore.

The full self-guided tour was a bit expensive (about €33 for the two of us), but the day was well spent. Tickets include audio devices that key into points of interest all over the ship. Some portions – including the engine room – are led by guides, many of whom actually served on the ship during her hay-day. Our engine room tour was conducted all in Dutch, but we could scan in with our audio devices at each stop for the English prerecorded versions.

We saw everything from the captain’s chair to the pipes, levers, and wheels of the underbelly. The ship was originally used as a two-class transatlantic passenger ship and then retrofitted to be a cruise liner. It was also secretly outfitted to serve in the war if called upon, but it was never needed. It was ultimately retired and permanently moored in Rotterdam and now serves as a museum and floating hotel.
