Dragon Ball Fic Recs

as many of us think (at least in my fandom buddies circle), dragon ball fic is plagued with The Bad*. however ao3 is one of the few things that renders correctly on my flip phone and im a creative writing major, a huge snob, and sort by new, so I got favorites. This will be an expanding masterlist.

This is personal preference. I read heavily for writing style, and have very few squicks. Please read tags. Essentially all of these authors have other fics in the fandom that are worth reading, but in interest of this being vaguely readable, Im keeping it largely to one per writer.

Explores Vegeta’s backstory under the Planet Trade Organization and his fraught relationships with his comrades, particularly the twisted bond he and Raditz share. Most of the story is narrated by Raditz, but there are lots of twists. He is an unreliable narrator, and in places, altered mental states allow him to take other points of view. We also get interludes from Bulma as she reads and reacts to Raditz's account.

Always loved the idea of Broly being the non-canonical foil to Goku. Both ostracized from the Saiyan race and its culture, and patronized by their elites. Both the lost survivors of Planet Vegeta. Both encouraged to keep their true Saiyan nature hidden. Both suffered a traumatic injury that altered their psyche as a newborn. Both murdered their father in a fit. Both are the Legendary Super Saiyan. Both seem to (at least, at first) lack a tail. Both are based off of Sun Wukong.

But that's where similarities end.

Broly is dressed in jewelry and garb, imitating royalty that discarded him. Goku, on the other hand, dresses humbly in gi. Broly's the idealistic Saiyan, Goku is ironically the idealistic human. Broly was collared by his Saiyan father, Goku was sent away. Broly is selfish, Goku is selfless. Broly took joy in his patricide, Goku did not. Goku roars into his Saiyan form, but Broly literally explodes. Goku was sent away from Planet Vegeta, but Broly was ushered into himself with the decimation of the planet.

Z Broly is the anti-Goku. Broly is Goku if everything was wrong.

Today you and Goku planned to hang around the City to change a little. Everything was perfect!! He picked you up at your house and took you on a ride with the Nimbus cloud!! You both enjoyed the ride a lot and the atmosphere was very peaceful. Just how you love it.

You guys went shopping, (you forced him of course, but he actually enjoyed it!!) and even bought him some casual clothes because let's be honest right there he looks damn fine in casual clothes. You did not told him of course...

After you two were satisfied with your shopping, you decided to sit on a bench wondering what you guys will do next.

As you both we're thinking what to do next you spotted an Ice cream truck catching your attention. It wasn't that close but it was still on your eyesight. "Oh! There's an ice truck over there!" This has immediately picked Goku's attention as sparkles appeared in his eyes. "Woohhh! Let's check that out Y/n!!" Goku said excited as both of you walk towards the Ice-cream truck and taking your hand in the process making you yelp in surprise and blush a little. But his enthusiasm just made you happier "Alright!! I hope it's not that expensive though and it better be worth it.." You said chuckling "Heheee... It'll be fine I guess~" Goku hummed.

As you both finished taking your orders you've ordered a Strawberry Banana Ice cream, and Goku have taken a Watermelon Grape mix. "What kind of mix is that?.." You said in a disgusted tone questioning the weird Saiyan's choices. "Don't know.... It sounded great!!.." Goku whined sounding disappointed. You hum in happiness as you're very proud of the mix of flavors you've choosen. "Hmmhh!! It's so good!! You should try Strawberry Banana next time!! How does yours taste?" You're right it tastes amazing!! I'll definitely listen to you next time!!" Goku says with a big smile on his face as you dramatically cry for your ice cream. "How could you.... How could you do this to me..." You dramatically cry as Goku's making fun of you "Heheee... You can take my Ice-cream instead!! It's better than nothing-Ouchh...!! That hurts!!" Goku whined his head hurting making you laugh like an antagonist. "Hahaa!! Deserved!! That's for stealing my Ice-cream you big monkey!!" Goku dramatically acts offended, joining in your little game "Heyyy!! That's not really nice of you you big!.... Big...... Uh.... I don't have any ideas... Ouch!!.." Goku still holds his forehead as the brain freeze just seems to get worse making you laugh. "I guess using your head will just hurt more.. Meh now you know you don't have to steal my food anymore." You said patting his head even if he's taller than you. "Yes yes..." He cried disappointed, as if he wanted to do that again. "Well what do you want to do know?" You've asked Goku before you heard sirens and people screaming immediately catching your attention. Your head turns at the direction the screams and you see a car driving extremely fast as the police chase them. "Damn what kind of people drive this fast?.." Goku asked "Suicidal people I guess." You've replied sarcastically not noticing the doors of the cars opening as it makes it's way behind you. You then fell a hand on your waist and on your mouth pulling you inside. Time went slow for Goku as his eyes widened processing what was happening. But before he could react the car was already far away. What seemed like Gang members went inside, they were 17 they had weapons and seemed easy to fight one by one. But if they were all attacking you you won't stand a chance. Which made you forget the idea of beating them up. But before, you had to find a way of untying yourself. "Oh so that's the chick you've taken? She's smoking hot! We'll have a lot of fine with her.." You wanted to forget everything. You wanted to wake up. You refused to believe it was real. You felt dirty. You still had the sensation of their hands touching everything on your body. You'll always remember how their lips felt on your body... On your face.... On your lips. The sounds of laughter of the men echoed in your ears. It was unbelievable. You'll never forget this day. You wanted to sleep and never wake up again. You closed your eyes. Hoping that the next time you'll open them you'll be in your bed, then spend the day with Goku and everyone else like the usual.

Instead what you've heard is an explosion. You slowly opened your eyes, puffed due to the many tears you've cried. But the door was behind you. So you couldn't not see what was happening. And you were too traumatized to move right now. You could just hear muffled voices and screams.

"I'm really mad right now. I'm going to kill you all." You heard a familiar voice say. But you didn't care. "Someone please help !!" You didn't care. You've heard many many pained screams. But you didn't care. You've heard many many sounds of bone breaking and liquids spilling. But you didn't care. You smelled a strong scent of blood. But you didn't care. It last for a very very long time. But then it stopped. You didn't care. You heard footsteps coming towards you. But you didn't care. You felt someone lifting your body but you didn't care. You then fell unconscious. And you didn't care.

It was unbelievable. Goku was full of blood, holding you on his arms still shocked about what happened. Oh when he saw you undressed on the floor oh how mad he became. Even after taking care of theses rotten garbages do this to you ?? Oh he was so mad. Putting them on their place killing them was not enough. He contacted Bulma that has reunited the dragon balls for a project, and asked if he could have a wish. Bulma accepted. Goku went on her balcony with the Dragon Balls reunited and said, "Show yourself Shenron! And grant my wishes!" the impressive dragon got out of the Dragon balls as the sky darkened. "Express your wishes human." The Dragon said with his deep voice. Goku looked at your unconscious face before granting his wish. "I want Y/n to forget everything that has happened today!! Including everything her body felt!!" Goku exclaimed. "Nothing's easier." Shenron shined and immediately your expression looked more peaceful. Goku felt a wave of relief. As if the weight on his shoulders has been lifted. He sighed happy that you'll remember nothing about this. "You have 2 wishes left. What else do you want?" Goku looked at Shenron who forgot that he was there. "Bulmaaaa!! Come do you wishes I'm done here!!" Goku said hoping on the Nimbus cloud with you in his arms. Bulma ran to the balcony screaming "Goku!! Tell me what happened to Chiya!! And why is she undressed!??" as her tone holds very noticeable worry for her best friend. "It's best to not know!!!" Goku yelled already in the sky. Yet Bulma heard it. She sighed irritated, but if Goku told so maybe it was better to not speak about it.

You woke up on your couch as the first thing you see was the TV showing a random anime about martial arts. You've noticed a bowl of snacks and pop corn. You realized you were on Goku's lap. You've gave him a confused glare while he was just smiling. "W-what happened? I don't remember anything..." You've switched for a sitting pose but since you were still tired you decided to put your head on Goku's shoulder. "Don't remember? We were shopping but then you felt tired so we've come back to your place. And I waited until you woke up." Goku said with a soft voice that replaced his usual energetic one. Maybe he felt tired too?? "Oh well... I still don't remember anything.. What time is it anyway?" You yawned as Goku looked at the clock. "It's 6:26 PM.. Why?" Goku asked tilting his head. "Wanna go to restaurant? They serve tasty rice!" You' said with a big smile seeing how Goku's eyes sparkled at the mention of rice. "Yess!! Let's go now!!" Goku took your hand and ran towards the exit of your home. You two were already dressed so you didn't mind.

At the restaurant you both ordered a lot of bowls of rice and ramen. Because you two were very hungry. For Goku it was like always. But you've rarely eaten this much, which was one of the many things you noticed was weird this evening. Why did you ate more? Why was Goku calmer? Why did he put a hand on your shoulder or on your waist protectively all the time as if something might happen? Why did he glare at every men near you? "Wahhhhhh!! This was so good!!" Goku exclaimed patting his stomach as you looked at the bowls. He had taken 15 bowls while it's usually 20. It added something on the list of what was weird thus evening. "What do you want to do now?" You asked him expecting him to say that he'll do his usual training of the night. But he replied with something else. "Hmmm what about we watch series and play games?" Goku said leaving you shocked. Okay. What was wrong this evening??! And why did you felt that Goku saved you from something you'd never forget?... You just decided to brush it off and enjoy the evening with him.

In the delightful (still updating) fic Breathe Into Me, Prince Vegeta has resigned himself to being alone, never finding his perfect counterpart, his true warrior. Nappa’s told him all about finding your mate, how it makes you feel complete and perfect, but Vegeta knows it could never happen, not now that the planet’s gone. And especially not with the last remaining Saiyans trapped under Frieza’s thumb.

And then he meets Goku, Raditz’s long-lost brother who doesn’t even know he’s a Saiyan. To make matters worse, Goku’s been pining after one of his earthling friends for so long, he barely knows how to interpret his own emotions.

I would kill for a soulmate!AU kakavege fic where all Sayans are born with a soulmate (they share a mark or maybe scars and feeling idk), and Vegeta's soulmate happens to be Goku and he never thought he could ever find his soulmate bc of their planet exploding and all. So when Vegeta finally meets Goku and fights him, he knows immediately that Goku is his soulmate, taking pride in his soulmate being a strong worthy opponent (so fitting for a Sayan prince). But bc Goku was dropped on his head he has no idea about any of this stuff. Like imagine the angst!!!! It would be so so good!

I think it's often overlooked how fucking traumatic that entire thing must be for Goku. Not only is his opponent - who he was just barely keeping up with as is - turning into a giant ape, but he's also just learning that Goku himself was the one who killed his grandfather:

And like. Wow. What a day. First he comes back from the dead to find everyone but Krilling and Gohan dead, then he seriously struggles to keep up with Vegeta, and NOW he gets to learn that the monster his grandfather used to warn him about was HIM.

Imagine if he first 30 years of vegeta life was mostly fighting, conquering planets then doing the paperwork to the planet trade and get his paycheck (with maybe planing a coup agaisnt freezer in his free time) and THEN he hears Goku and Bulma's adventures as kids and it fucking turns out the EARTHLINGS had a more interesting childhood that the motherfucking Prince of a extinct Warriors race.

Goku and Bulma spent their childhood going on whimsical and wacky adventures.

Vegeta’s childhood consisted of murder, bloodbaths and slaughtering of the innocent every single day. He was a child solider, a minion, a slave. Frieza would say “jump” and Vegeta was trained to say “How high?”

Side note: Frieza never paid his henchmen, perhaps the exception of the Ginyu Force, Zarbon and Dedoria, but Vegeta and everyone else who served Frieza was paid in being allowed to live another day.

So I can’t imagine Vegeta being jealous that Goku and Bulma had a more interesting/fun childhood than him, more that he’d be flabbergasted by the absolute craziness of these stories about their old adventures.

Meanwhile Vegeta shares his childhood stories growing up in the Frieza Force and treats them like a funny story but Goku and Bulma are starring at him, jaws dropped from the absolute horrors he’s been through. That’s when Vegeta realizes he had a bad childhood and is possibly severely traumatized.

Since I'm seeing some damn good posts about Vegeta today, I want to jump on the bandwagon and gush about this scene

Because it's so damn relatable. It's the best part of his character development. I've seen people in the past criticize him because they felt he got back to being evil out of nowhere when he was so far in his character development after the end of the Cell Arc and the last 7 years of peace, but this is exactly why it works. Had this happened before that development I wouldn't have thought much of his descent into darkness, but like this? Vegeta getting to his lowest point not because of some traumatic event or because he "had" to settle on Earth, but because he was liking it? It's such an active interaction with his own growth that I never truly understood how powerful it was until some time ago when I rewatched the series after having gone through somewhat similar thoughts myself.

This is the last stage of his development, the bridge connecting the evil warrior prince to the good-hearted family man, and it's not a smooth, quiet progression. It's Vegeta throwing a tantrum. He's terrified of his growth, of becoming someone so different from what he believed himself to be for his whole life as to be completely unrecognizable, and is clinging to the vestiges of his former identity as hard as he can because change makes him feel weak and vulnerable. All this despite the fact that deep down he knows it's useless to do so - he can never go back to how he was before. Despite everything he did, as soon as he realizes that Buu is a concrete danger to his family, he swallows his pride, puts an end to his "real warrior" fight with a trick, hugs his son and fights Buu alone, stepping up as a true defender of the Earth for the first time.

And it's only after this, after venting all his frustrations, after literally dying and being reborn, that he can truly embrace his new role, the person he's grown up into during the last seven years. The Vegeta who returns at the end of the arc is so much stronger than he's ever been, so much more mature that not only is he fine with letting Goku upstage him, he's the one who has the idea to let the Earthlings step up to protect their planet. Everytime he faced a villain by himself, relying only on his strength and warrior pride, he either failed or made the problem worse. When he faces a villain with proper planning and teamwork, he causes the death of the strongest villain in the series, with the Spirit Bomb working for the first time in the whole manga (ironically it never amounted to much when it was Goku choosing to use it).

tl;dr: Goku sees letting his child do serious battle as a gift, and Vegeta sees it as a failure.

a lot of the 'goku's a bad father' discourse comes from how he trains/puts Gohan into fights and either doesn't know or doesn't realize that Gohan wants to be a scholar and not a warrior; the reason Gohan keeps joining the fray is because he doesn't want to see people he loves get hurt, right, because that's been his entire experience since Raditz showed up (and remains so until Cell dies).

The discourse re: The Cell Games is interesting though, examining the 'how could Goku not know/how could Goku volunteer his child so blithely' etc and his similar attitude toward the kids fighting in Super('s manga), and it's part of why I say/write/read Goku as deeply inconsiderate but never malicious (and this does tie into the foil with Geets lemme just); Goku's experience with serious combat is fun, and exciting.

Goku volunteering Gohan to fight Cell was something Goku considered a gift to Gohan, to be able to flex his power and go all out on an enemy that could handle it/required it -- that's something Goku wishes he had the power to do, especially at Gohan's age! That's super exciting to Goku. It's not pageant mom forcing her kid to do what she wanted energy, it's Goku being sweet and pure and sharing something he thinks he has in common with his kid. Vegeta says Saiyans live to fight! Goku's entire life has been spent bonding with competitive martial artists! It never occurred to him that someone so naturally powerful and talented wouldn't enjoy fighting.

And Goku does not read subtext, that's not a skill he has, so by the time Piccolo spells it out for him, he's genuinely sorry to have put Gohan in that position.

But in Super('s manga), the larger picture of Don't Put Children in Traumatic Situations still doesn't really occur to Goku, because he doesn't consider battle traumatic, no matter how emotionally intense it gets. Goku doesn't hold onto things. Goku lives and lets live, as long as he doesn't have to kill you. That's his super power. It's why he can be friends with all of these people who have done him and his loved ones and his planet so much harm. He consistently ends earth-shattering battles with, 'that was fun, let's do it again sometime'

Vegeta, on the other hand (see I told you I'd get here, I promised), has had the complete opposite experience. Vegeta considers others heavily, it's what made him very good at being malicious. Vegeta does this for survival. Vegeta's climb to the top is for the vantage point, not the view. He's not looking to the stars dreaming about what else it out there. He's squinting at the dark trying to kill whatever it is before it kills him and his home and his family. again.

Vegeta is a child soldier, who has distinct recollection of his culture being built on the rearing of child soldiers. By the times the cell games come around he is experiencing having a child for the first time, and after seeing (a future version of) that child die in battle, he seems to take on a much different opinion on letting kids fight.

Vegeta comes from a culture in which you send your child off-world to conquer a planet, alone, once they're old enough to walk. The stronger kids go into war zones. Vegeta was giving strategic orders to fellow elites by the time he was five. He was treating Gohan like a soldier when he was five.

But, by the Buu saga, Bulma tells Gohan that Vegeta says Trunks is old enough now to start proper training -- when Trunks is eight years old. Even then, Vegeta's telling Trunks not to push himself too hard in the gravity room, to stop and leave when it's too much for him to handle. Vegeta kills himself trying to prevent Trunks and Goten having to fight Buu. He jumps in to protect the kids when the fight gets too intense in Yo! Son Goku and Friends Return. He begs the kids not to fight Beerus in Battle of the Gods when he's barely conscious. He snaps at Goku any time he suggests them for intense battle in Super('s manga).

Vegeta sees it as not being strong enough to handle a problem, Which totally definitely doesn't have anything to do with some kind of deep-rooted trauma about placing the responsibility of making up for your weakness on your children that Vegeta's had to deal with since becoming a father and he for sure doesn't take it personally when a parent volunteers children to solve problems they had nothing to do with. He's fine! It's fine.

He does not want Trunks or Goten anywhere near a real battlefield (Bulma and/or the other adults seem to be helping to enforce this; in Res F, Trunks and Goten are not invited to go to the Freeza fight, and in the Moro arc both of them were asked to go be rangers in 17's absence again, complaining that nobody told them there was a fight happening at all), because it's got nothing to do with them. They shouldn't have to fight for their -- or anyone else's -- lives. That's the adults' job. That's his job.

Because to Vegeta, it is a job. Soldier, guardian, prince, lord, whatever. It's a role he has to fulfill, and his pride (and a whole lot of trauma-informed necessity) drives him to be the best at it, period, the end. It's an obligation that he must fulfill, because he's decided he's personally responsible for [gestures to the earth] all of this and its survival. It's where he keeps all his stuff!

For Goku, it's a game. He just wants to fight the strongest guys, and it's his understanding that everyone else wants that too. If he's not the best, GREAT! That's more to look forward to. A whole new rabbit to chase to who knows where. It's adventure! It's exciting! So of course the kids would want to get in on it! He LOVED doing this kind of stuff when he was a kid.

Goku has two hands! ...for former villains Vegeta and Piccolo to try to wrestle away from all the other, much worse villains who do not want to play with him.

Piccolo's sacrifice .. just-- UGLY CRIED always gets me hard cuz he literally lived hated and shunned all his life and then observed the bond and the kindness Goku was getting from his friends at his death as he literally sacrificed himself without second thought - and then his son just treated him like a normal person too despite the grueling training he put him through slowly with the understanding that he needs to do this for the sake of everybody Nd all that-- and then do a Goku and die for him too even tho it was so important that he doesn't die* (cuz dragon balls*), aaaa it's must be horrific for Gohan too literally lost 2 ppl back to back to protect him, I feel the so sad for Gohan too he's just started life getting traumatized left and right too (& THE ROBOT SCENE??? Hi there! So you didn't watch Boruto but just in case you were interested, here's a quick summary of everything that has happened so far (canon only) :

🔴The birth of Boruto Uzumaki :

Our boy Boruto is born into luxury: Hokage dad, fancy apartment, Shadow Clone babysitters, and a mom who can benchpress demons. But he’s mad. Why? Because "Daddy is too busy running a village to attend Parent Teacher Day." Tragic. So, like every angsty anime kid, Boruto joins a ninja academy just to rebel by... becoming a ninja.

🔴The Chunnin exam arc :

Boruto, allergic to effort, slaps on a Scientific Ninja Tool to cheat during exams. Naruto catches him red-handed and publicly disowns him faster than you can say "Dattebayo!" But THEN! The alien Momoshiki crashes the party like it’s a Naruto movie crossover, and Boruto ends up saving the day with help from daddy and Sasuke, of course. As for the prize, he got a glowing Karma tattoo that basically screams “You’ve been marked by space demons.”

🔴The Kara arc :

Enter Kara: a villain group with a budget, a vibe, and a leader named Jigen who’s definitely not a vessel for an evil space god named Isshiki. (Spoiler: he is.) Kawaki enters the chat, a traumatized, tatted-up boy with anger issues and amazing cheekbones. Naruto adopts him like a stray cat, and now Boruto and Kawaki are brothers but rivals but maybe frenemies but also trauma-bonded. It’s complicated

🔴Isshiki :

when Isshiki attacks, Naruto unlocks Bayron Mode, which is basically Super Saiyan but with consequences. He looks cool for five minutes, beats Isshiki, but loses his beloved fox buddy in the process. Sasuke also got nerfed because no one is allowed to have both eyes in this economy

🔴 Code arc :

With Jigen and Isshiki gone, Code takes over Kara with all the menace of a teenager who listens to too much emo music. He wants revenge, power, and maybe a hug. He gets claw marks instead. He also teams up with Eida (a simp magnet) and Daemon (a child who could solo Goku if he wasn’t too busy being annoying)

🔴 Kawaki's emo phase arc :

Plot twist! Kawaki becomes so obsessed with Naruto’s safety that he decides to murder Boruto. Boruto dosen't stay dead. Thanks to Momoshiki, who’s like that creepy uncle who won’t leave your soul, Boruto revives and is now half alien. Hooray?

🔴Two Blue Vortex manga :

After doing a disappearing act for three years, Boruto returns looking like he’s been through a Pinterest glow-up and trained with John Wick. Meanwhile, Kawaki’s out here rewriting history like he’s got admin rights to everyone’s memories. He literally made the whole village think he's Naruto’s biological son. Sarada’s the only one whose WiFi wasn’t hacked, so she’s just standing there watching everyone go full Truman Show, trying not to scream. Meanwhile, Code is still around, trying to be a villain, but he just shows up, talks big, gets punched, and leaves.

Oh, and there are ninja trees now! Carnivorous, DNA hacking trees, because chakra wasn't weird enough already. Boruto’s main job now? Dramatic rooftop stares, cryptic warnings, and trying not to stab people who think he's the enemy.

Thank you for your service, anon. It was really helpful. I've seen a handful of clips of Boruto, entirely Sasuke-related content, but have had no idea about the other characters, but it makes sense now.

Also, is Momoshiki the same guy who has that iconic fight against Sasuke and Naruto, because I have seen it, and Sasuke looks fine there!
