Wrote a longer meta idk if I want to post but like thinking about Just King Thing's reaction to the Trashcanman-Chapters in the face of the widespread 'In my post-apocalyptic novel, there's no disabled people because they all died'-conceit. Like. Okay. If that's the expected genre-standard, why so uncomfortable with hundreds of pages of a mentally and physically disabled man very slowly and excruciatingly dying his confused, lonely way through the collapse of society?

Again, haven't gotten to the last part yet (where I know Nick apparently starts force-ghost projecting around to talk to people, which like. could be horrible, could be really funny? TK/TheShining-As-Assistive-Tech is a funny concept in the context of King's work, okay? It will probably be horrible tho) but literally only the Nick & Tom (&Trashcanman's!) travel chapters and God's Tom-scene were imo thematically better depictions of disabled (&Deaf) people in postapocalyptic media than what's normally going around. Like. Damn, a story about disability & cOmMuNiTy (which I LIKED!) won a Hugo just now, and it still didn't manage to actually make disabled characters narrators with agency. That's what we're at, normally. Meanwhile, in the Stand, disabled people get to survive the apocalypse no questions asked, support and form bonds with each other and if you try to violate an intellectually disabled man's agency and autonomy, God-or-something-pretending-to-be-God shows up, restores said agency and autonomy and also personally calls you a cunt.

Honestly absolute canary in the coal mine wrt. the discussion of dis/ability on Just King Things was the Black host saying he thought Nick Andrews was Black because his story opens with him being hatecrimed and implying it's silly to give that story to a white male character and transitioning to talking about King's racism (valid! he's certainly very racist!). Just absolute clown shoes moment tho, when you consider Nick's introduction chapter is like: 'This is Nick Andrews, a Deaf non-verbal homeless man systematically excluded from society because of his Deafness, and he just got hatecrimed because some locals mistook him for intellectually disabled' and then his plot is like. majorly about his relationship to an intellectually disabled man, who also gets agency and interiority. Going by the Nick&Tom relationship, Stephen King knows what internalized abelism and lateral ableist aggression is - he's not good at depicting it sensitively, but that is def what's happening here - and the Just King Thing guys ... apparently don't. Like they don't even seem aware of what ableism is outside of carefully avoiding the outdated language of The Stand that was however medically accurate at the time of its publication.
