I haven’t tasted an Achel 8 Bruin, from the 1 or 2 Trappist monks still alive and present in - and/or shipped in to - Achel, in years... after tasting my first delicious Achel Extra Bruin, I hadn’t yet returned to the 8’s. Well, all the necessary elements were present - dark fruits, dark roasted malts, phenolic spice, etc. - but much more subdued than its bigger brother. This evening I stepped into the Wayback Machine and ended up back in 1990 (what the beer auction details stated), or sometime around then, when the Trappist monks at Rochefort bottled their Rochefort 6 in these cool-looking painted label bottles. This 30 year old or so watery thin beer, with lots of precipitated dark malts, was definitely oxidized, roasted/slightly burnt - albeit stale - biscuit malt character, and some watery Porto-like peppered dark fruits. Honestly, I’m happier with the unique antique painted label bottle than with its contents.
