Last summer my friend Devere and I wrote a pilot about chosen family in the LGBT community. It's been tough shopping this baby around the past few months but I'm hopeful that someday this story will be told. If not this exact story then at least the story of chosen family in the LGBTQ community the way I know it. I'm not talking about the remaking of Will & Grace as much as I think it's a good laugh and obviously successful. I'm talking about young people who against all odds have made a way for themselves in a world who said statistically you are supposed to fail. I'm talking about trans people, queer POC, and folks who don't come from financial privilege or have the same access to certain resources. I'm talking about grit and hustle and roses out of concrete that laugh through it all because how can you stay sane if you don't laugh at this shit. To quote my favorite artist Sade "It's only love that gets you through", and I know that on this journey of blood, sweat, tears, rejection and fast money, that chosen family has been that love for me. I pray I see the day when trans bodies get to be at the center of the story and #transgirljoy is the trending hashtag. When we no longer have to go to court over which bathroom to use or fear being killed by a lover because he's scared of what people will think of us. But that day won't come unless Hollywood let's the powers that be and middle America really see us. See us as human just like them. Our hearts and our souls, our talents and our flaws, our pain and most importantly, our joy.
