• Battle of Iwo Jima
The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps and Navy landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during World War II.
After the American capture of the Marshall Islands, and the devastating air attacks against the Japanese fortress island of Truk Atoll in the Carolines in January 1944, the Japanese military leaders reevaluated their situation. All indications pointed to an American drive toward the Mariana Islands and the Carolines. To counter such an offensive, the IJA and the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) established an inner line of defenses extending generally northward from the Carolines to the Marianas, and thence to Japan via the Volcano Islands, and westward from the Marianas via the Carolines. In March 1944, the Japanese 31st Army, commanded by General Hideyoshi Obata, was activated to garrison this inner line. The commander of the Japanese garrison on Chichi Jima was placed nominally in command of Army and Navy units in the Volcano Islands. After the American conquest of the Marianas, daily bomber raids from the Marianas hit the mainland as part of Operation Scavenger. Iwo Jima served as an early warning station that radioed reports of incoming bombers back to mainland Japan. This allowed Japanese air defenses to prepare for the arrival of American bombers.
After the U.S. seized bases in the Marshall Islands in the battles of Kwajalein and Eniwetok in February 1944, Japanese Army and Navy reinforcements were sent to Iwo Jima: 500 men from the naval base at Yokosuka and 500 from Chichi Jima reached Iwo Jima during March and April 1944. At the same time, with reinforcements arriving from Chichi Jima and the home islands, the Army garrison on Iwo Jima reached a strength of more than 5,000 men. American intelligence sources were confident that Iwo Jima would fall in one week. In light of the optimistic intelligence reports, the decision was made to invade Iwo Jima and the operation was given the code name Operation Detachment. American forces failed to anticipate that the Japanese would prepare a complex and deep defense, much like on Peleliu in the fall of 1944. So successful was the Japanese preparation that it was discovered after the battle that the hundreds of tons of Allied bombs and thousands of rounds of heavy naval gunfire had left the Japanese defenders almost undamaged and ready to inflict losses on the U.S. Marines.
By February 19th, 1945, the day the Americans invaded, 18 kilometres (11 mi) of a planned 27 kilometres (17 mi) of tunnel network had been dug. There were numerous command centers and barracks that were 75 feet deep. Tunnels allowed for troop movement to go undetected to various defense positions. Hundreds of hidden artillery and mortar positions along with land mines were placed all over the island. Among the Japanese weapons were 320 mm spigot mortars and a variety of explosive rockets. Numerous Japanese snipers and camouflaged machine gun positions were also set up.
Starting on June 15th, 1944, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army Air Forces began naval bombardments and air raids against Iwo Jima, which would become the longest and most intense in the Pacific theater. These would contain a combination of naval artillery shellings and aerial bombings that went on for nine months. Maj. Gen. Harry Schmidt, commander of the Marine landing force, requested a 10-day heavy shelling of the island immediately preceding the mid-February amphibious assault. The limited bombardment had questionable impact on the enemy due to the Japanese being heavily dug-in and fortified. However, many bunkers and caves were destroyed during the bombing, giving it some limited success. The Japanese had been preparing for this battle since March 1944, which gave them a significant head start. By the time of the landing, about 450 American ships were located off Iwo Jima. The entire battle involved about 60,000 U.S. Marines and several thousand U.S. Navy Seabees.
Unlike the days of the pre-landing bombardment, the day of invasion dawned clear and bright. At 08:59, the first wave of Marines landed on the beaches of the southeastern coast of Iwo Jima. Major Howard Connor, 5th Marine Division signal officer, had six Navajo code talkers working around the clock during the first two days of the battle. These six sent and received over 800 messages, all without error. Unfortunately for the landing force, the planners at Pearl Harbor had completely misjudged the situation that would face Gen. Schmidt's Marines. The beaches had been described as "excellent" and the thrust inland was expected to be "easy." In reality, after crossing the beach, the Marines were faced with 15-foot-high slopes of soft black volcanic ash. This ash allowed for neither a secure footing nor the construction of foxholes to protect the Marines from hostile fire. The lack of a vigorous response led the Navy to conclude that their bombardment had suppressed the Japanese defenses and in good order the Marines began deployment to the Iwo Jima beach.
In the deathly silence, landed US Marines began to slowly inch their way forward inland, oblivious to the danger. After allowing the Americans to pile up men and machinery on the beach for just over an hour, Japanese Gen. Kuribayashi unleashed the undiminished force of his countermeasures. Shortly after 10:00, everything from machine guns and mortars to heavy artillery began to rain down on the crowded beach, which was quickly transformed into a nightmarish bloodbath. To make matters worse for the Americans, the artillery bunkers firing on them were connected to the elaborate tunnel system so that bunkers that were cleared with flamethrowers and grenades were reoccupied shortly afterwards by Japanese troops moving through the tunnels. This tactic caused many casualties among the Marines, as they walked past the reoccupied bunkers without expecting to suddenly take fresh fire. Amtracs, unable to do more than uselessly churn the black ash, made no progress up the slopes; their Marine passengers had to dismount and slog forward on foot. By 11:30, some Marines had managed to reach the southern tip of Airfield No. 1, whose possession had been one of the (highly unrealistic) original American objectives for the first day. The Marines endured a fanatical 100-man charge by the Japanese, but were able to keep their toehold on Airfield No. 1 as night fell.
In the left-most sector, the Americans did manage to achieve one of their objectives for the battle that day. Led by Col. Harry B. "Harry the Horse" Liversedge, the 28th Marines drove across the island at its narrowest width, around 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi), thereby isolating the Japanese dug in on Mount Suribachi. The right-most landing area was dominated by Japanese positions at the Quarry. The 25th Marine Regiment undertook a two-pronged attack to silence these guns. The 25th Marines' 3rd Battalion had landed approximately 900 men in the morning. Japanese resistance at the Quarry was so fierce that by nightfall only 150 Marines were left in fighting condition. By the evening, 30,000 Marines had landed. About 40,000 more would follow. In the days after the landings, the Marines expected the usual Japanese banzai charge during the night. This had been the standard Japanese final defense strategy in previous battles against enemy ground forces. However, General Kuribayashi had strictly forbidden these "human wave" attacks by the Japanese infantrymen because he considered them to be futile. The fighting on the beachhead at Iwo Jima was very fierce. The advance of the Marines was stalled by numerous defensive positions augmented by artillery pieces. There, the Marines were ambushed by Japanese troops who occasionally sprang out of tunnels. At night, the Japanese left their defenses under cover of darkness to attack American foxholes, but U.S. Navy ships fired star shells to deny them the cover of darkness.
Close air support was initially provided by fighters from escort carriers off the coast. This shifted over to the 15th Fighter Group, flying P-51 Mustangs, after they arrived on the island on March 6th. Similarly, illumination rounds (flares) which were used to light up the battlefield at night were initially provided by ships, shifting over later to landing force artillery. Navajo code talkers were part of the American ground communications. After running out of water, food and most supplies, the Japanese troops became desperate toward the end of the battle. Kuribayashi, who had argued against banzai attacks at the start of the battle, realized that defeat was imminent. Marines began to face increasing numbers of nighttime attacks; these were only repelled by a combination of machine-gun defensive positions and artillery support. At times, the Marines engaged in hand-to-hand fighting to repel the Japanese attacks. With the landing area secure, more troops and heavy equipment came ashore, and the invasion proceeded north to capture the airfields and the remainder of the island. Most Japanese soldiers fought to the death.
By the morning of 23 February, Mount Suribachi was effectively cut off above ground from the rest of the island. The Marines knew that the Japanese defenders had an extensive network of below-ground defenses, and that in spite of its isolation above ground, the volcano was still connected to Japanese defenders via the tunnel network. They expected a fierce fight for the summit. Two small patrols from two rifle companies from the 2/28 Marines were sent up the volcano to reconnoiter routes on the mountain's north face. The recon patrols made it to the summit and scrambled down again, reporting any contact to the 2/28 Marines commander, Colonel Chandler Johnson. Although the Marine riflemen expected an ambush, the larger patrol going up afterwards encountered a few Japanese defenders once on top and after the flag was raised. The majority of the Japanese troops stayed in the tunnel network due to U.S. shelling, only occasionally attacking in small groups, and were generally all killed. Johnson called for a reinforced platoon size patrol from E Company to climb Suribachi and seize and occupy the crest. The patrol commander, 1st Lt. Harold Schrier, was handed the battalion's American flag to be raised on top to signal Suribachi's capture, if they reached the summit. Johnson and the Marines anticipated heavy fighting, but the patrol encountered only a small amount of sniper fire on the way up the mountain. Once the top was secured by Schrier and his men, a length of Japanese water pipe was found there among the wreckage, and the American flag was attached to the pipe and then raised and planted on top of Mount Suribachi which became the first foreign flag to fly on Japanese soil.
Though ultimately victorious, the American victory at Iwo Jima had come at a terrible price. According to the official Navy Department Library website, The 36-day (Iwo Jima) assault resulted in more than 26,000 American casualties, including 6,800 dead. Because all civilians had been evacuated, there were no civilian casualties at Iwo Jima, unlike at Saipan and Okinawa.

A Quick Perusal of My Library
Because talking with @thelastspeecher makes me want to see if there are any like-minded readers out there on the Internets before I hasten myself off to bed!
[ID: The books Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance by Christopher Paolini, The World of Shannara by Terry Brooks, and the first two novels of Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series.
To begin with -- yes, I was an Eragon kid growing up. Yes, I went ahead and bought all of them. And yes, I have a nostalgic love of it, even if looking back on it, I can agree it was written terribly by comparison to most literature I come across, but I can look at it like a beginning writer writing their first fanfiction and throwing it to the four winds to see who wants to pluck it out of the air and read it. (Yes, I have To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. There is a very noticeable difference between his writing style as a kid and his writing style now, believe me.)
Also, The World of Shannara is one of those world-building encyclopedia-ish books. If anyone here has heard of the Shannara Chronicles...yes, I read the books they are based on, and yes, the author is still writing books for his world. Go read them, they’re fantastic. My mom read them when she was a kid and I’m thinking about raiding her library for whatever remains of them at the moment. Perhaps later.
[ID: a collection of Pokemon Adventures Manga. The books visible detail the Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Firered, Leafgreen, Heartgold, and Soulsilver story arcs]
...If some of my previous posts haven’t made it obvious already, I am a Pokemon nut. I don’t have all of the manga volumes for the Pokemon Adventures manga, but I’m getting there. Black and White is the next on my list.
Also, there’s another layer of manga behind the ones in this picture. Believe me when I say I have everything for Gen 1-4 in terms of the manga’s story.
[ID: The image showcases more manga, mostly Fullmetal Alchemist volumes. There are two volumes of manga in the back that are hard to see and are part of Trigun’s published volumes]
Yes, there is yet more manga! And there’s another cube of storage space besides this one that has the rest of the Trigun manga stuffed in it...along with the rest of the Pokemon manga that couldn’t fit in the previous picture. XD I am considering getting more, but if the pictures here aren't going to be indication enough, let it be known that my space is very limited.
[ID: A bookshelf with a small metal liberty bell souvenir sitting in front of a number of books: The Magician, The Sorceress, and the Necromancer from The Immortal Flames of Nicholas Flamel, the Harry Potter Series, and Mossflower, Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall, and Marlfox by Brian Jaques, the two White Sand graphic novel volumes from Brandon Sanderson, and The Gideon Trilogy by Buckley-Archer]
Ah, childhood. Some of it, anyway. I am thinking about getting the rest of the Immortal Flames series, and more of Redwall, at least. The Gideon Trilogy is an interesting historical novel-fiction-time travel sort of read that starts out very slowly. I had a difficult time getting into it, but I was hooked. Eventually.
Also, there’s more behind those books.
[ID: The book titles I’d like to point out here are The Time Quake from the Gideon Trilogy, The Legend of Luke, Taggerung, and Triss by Brian Jaques , Dragon Drums, Time Stops for No Mouse, and The Sands of Time. The rest are either books that were required reading by my college (Years of Red Dust, Grape Leaves), or cat books.]
Time Stops for No Mouse and the Sands of Time were both rather random books, to be honest. They’re a pair that are meant to be together, and they’re mysteries set in a mouse-based society that considers cats an extinct species.
I also have a...very big collection of D&D books on the shelf directly below -- mostly rule and world-building books, as well as the first 2 of the Adventure Zone graphic novels. But I don’t think I need to post a picture of that here.
Nor do I feel a need to post a picture of a cluttered shelf with all my Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog comics that I’ve collected over the years. But yes, I have a decent chunk of their published works.
[ID: Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series, Elantirs, The Emperor’s Soul, Warbreaker, and Arcanum Unbounded]
...yes, I am a very big Brandon Sanderson fan. And I do have his Stormlight Archives books, but this post is already getting incredibly long.
[ID: In dim light, there are 6 DVD cases -- the Gravity Falls Special Edition set, and three Mythbusters DVDs. Behind the Vax’ildan and Keylith Funko Pops, there are five books with a golden hamster on the spine. The series begins with the book I, Freddy, and ends with Freddy’s Final Quest.]
Another selection of books from my childhood! Hidden among some other things, yes. Freddy’s series was an intriguing read for me, and I think one that I got through a Scholastic order form. Dunno why I held onto this one, other than the fact that it’s charming and it’s about a hamster who learns how to type and writes a novel in the first book. Well, autobiography, technically.
This shelf/storage cube shares a level with the Stormlight Archives...as well as my two Journal 3′s because I got the original and the special edition black light.
[ID: a cube with Brandon Sanderson’s Reckoner’s trilogy, Transformers’ Covenant of Primus, Exodus, Exiles, and Retribution, and hiding in the shadows, an old copy of Macbeth]
Yes, I’m a Transformers fan. I like giant robots. Or robots in general. Shush.
Also, I got that copy of Macbeth from my high school teacher because they were old, beat-up copies, and he was getting new ones for next year.
[ID: Three Dragonlance novels, Frankenstein, a copy of the 1984 NIV translation of the bible, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Because of Win-Dixie]
Some childhood memories here, some not. The copy of the bible and Because of Win-Dixie have been around for a while. My parents sent me to a private school and I ended up getting that translation as a result of my attending there. Never really felt a need to get rid of it, to be honest. Everything else I bought either in college or after. The Dragonlance novels are a good read, and I’ve been thinking about getting more of them.
[ID: Some Terry Pratchet novels, the Tale of Despareaux, Return to Neverland, and The Prophecy of the Stones. The other books are various pieces of nonfiction, or very skinny textbooks]
The Prophecy of the Stones is the one I want to point out here. It was a birthday gift that turned into a really, really compelling read. I’d highly recommend it.
Also, the Princess Academy is in the next storage cube over. That one’s a good one, too. I’ve heard there’s a series attached to it, so I’m going to have to go looking for it. (Also, if the picture loads, there is another copy of a Harry Potter novel there. That one’s in German!)
As for the Terry Pratchet novels...I only started buying them recently. My collection isn’t very big yet, and I haven’t bought all of them, either. I may look into doing that...eventually.
...I’m gonna stop this post here, while I still have half a mind to actually go to bed. I need to sleep, I really do. If anyone wants to know my opinions on some of the other books of fiction I have hiding in these pictures -- or perhaps elsewhere -- please, don’t be afraid to drop an ask and let me know!
#this is a VERY LONG POST#cross' rambling#there are a Great Many Pictures in this one#forgive the later picture descriptions on this post#it is very late for me#and therefore Not A Very Good Time To Be Writing Descriptions#but yes I have a Great Many Books!#and am constantly looking for more

TRANSFORMERS AU x CHALLENGE OF THE GOBOTS - SEPARATION PT 4
Raid-R drove alone down the increasingly decrepit roads that led to Old Gobotron. All of the most recent intel on the Renegades suggested that they were operating from an outpost hidden somewhere in this no-bot's land. So far, everything was quiet, but it was the kind of quiet that would unnerve even the steeliest of Guardians. Raid-R, being a New-Gen of fairly recent manufacture, didn't yet understand such emotions. Still, he kept his sensors on full alert.
"He will be the perfect test platform for my experimental Stealth Field Penetrator."
The words of Professor Von Joy played back in his mind like a high-fidelity audio recording. It was one of the two things that justified his current actions. The other was his promise to Dashlane that he would find Skybolt.
"What's your malfunction, Raid-R?" shouted a frustrated Humm-R as he pulled up beside his partner.
"I must locate the current Renegade base of operation in order to rescue Construct Skybolt. My Stealth Field Penetrator will facilitate location."
"Yeah, it could...if it works."
"It....must function....to complete mission." Humm-R was right to be concerned about whether or not the device would work. It was still untested. "Your concern is justified, but immediate action is required. Reports indicate that Construct Skybolt has been detected with Renegade Stallion. Renegade Stallion was last detected traveling in this direction."
"Conclusion: Renegade HQ is within this vicinity, right?" Humm-R sighed. "You New-Gens and your logic...."
"Logic alone does not dictate current actions," Raid-R admitted. "I made...a promise...to Ally Dashlane. A Guardian is true to his words."
"What are you hoping to accomplish out here, besides pinpointing the Renegades' hideout? You have no field combat experience. Do you really think the Renegades would just let you in without a fight?"
"Probability of combat...was not calculated."
"That's...not like you. You must really be concerned about Skybolt."
"You are correct. I have yet to fully determine the reason."
"From what I understand, he's a lot like you." Humm-R would smile at this sign of emotional growth in his partner were he not currently in vehicle mode. "Dash seems to really care about him. He got himself and Turbo pretty badly trashed by the Renegades for trying to pull this same stunt, and they have a lot more combat experience than you."
"I am aware of Turbo and Dashlane's condition. It was a determining factor in my current course of action. I...made a promise to Dashlane. I stated that I would locate Skybolt."
"You can't do this alone. I won't let you. I've just relayed our current position to Leader 1 and the others."
"There may be insufficient time to await their arrival. Second-Generation Boomer Prototype 'Rumble' was accessed and reprogrammed within 3 Gobotron Solar Cycles of capture."
"Don't remind me."
"How much longer, Dr. Go?" CyKill asked impatiently. "I want my new warrior online before the Guardians show up."
"I'm working as fast as I can, CyKill," the Renegade scientist replied. "This neural circuitry is a bit more advanced than that of the previous New-Gen, and its data is protected by a completely different encryption algorithm that I've yet to fully crack.
"You'd better crack it before I decide to crack you." The Renegade leader gave the mad doctor a menacing glare before turning his attention to the large bank of monitors, one of which displayed a security camera feed. CyKill's frustration quickly turned to anger as soon as he laid eyes on the security monitor, which showed Humm-R and Raid-R approaching the outer perimeter of the base. He slammed his fist down on the console while activating his comm. "Cop-Tur, Crasher, Screw Head! Stall those Guardians for as long as you can!"
"Finally," Crasher replied, barely containing her maniacal cackle. "I was starting to get bored."
"Me too, Crasher." Cop-Tur chimed in.
Humm-R and Raid-R, meanwhile, continued to make their way down the crumbling streets of Old Gobotron.
"Got a fix on the Renegade base yet?"
"We are approaching the outer perimeter of the current Renegade base," Raid-R replied. "I am detecting a Blast patrol 300 meters due--"
Both Guardians swerved to the right as a large spherical projectile came hurtling in their direction. This projectile soon slammed into the road in front of them, exploding with enough force to cause both their vehicular modes to roll over sideways before landing on their roofs. Humm-R was the first to transform and launch himself into the air just as another of the Boomers' explosive rounds came flying in their direction. The gruff Guardian warrior wasted no time in blasting the missile before it could make contact with the ground, causing it to detonate in mid-flight.
"Raid-R, are you alright?" he called out.
"I have sustained minor collision damage," Raid-R replied. "I will attempt to disable the Boomers."
"Let's just hope that's still a possibility. The last thing we need right now is a Boomer with some actual brains."
A loud, maniacal cackle soon alerted both Guardians to the approach of Crasher.
"Would you consider the presence of Crasher, Cop-Tur and Screw Head...needed?"
Humm-R simply facepalmed at his companion's attempt at a witty retort before jumping on top of the crazed Renegade and slamming his fist into her cockpit. Raid-R, meanwhile, activated his jets and took to the sky mere moments before Screw Head emerged from the ground beneath him.
The drill tank Renegade growled in frustration before transforming into robot mode and firing a shot at the young New-Gen, who dodged to the left, causing the shot to strike Cop-Tur's rotor assembly, sending the thuggish flyer spiraling out of control toward the ground.
"Thank you for your assistance, Screw Head," Raid-R taunted before firing a shot of his own, which struck the Renegade in the midsection just as he prepared to tunnel underground again.
Humm-R, meanwhile, leapt off of Crasher as she began to spin out of control before falling into a massive roadside ditch. "Not bad, kid."
"I have studied 700 Gobotron Cycles of archived combat footage to analyze Renegade combat techniques. These Renegades are predictable," Raid-R stated. "87.934% probability this was a stall tactic."
"Yeah. He's not exactly siccing a Zod on us."
"If reprogramming of Skybolt is successful, I believe CyKill will deploy him against us as a field test."
"Yeah. CyKill never wastes time showing off whatever new toy he's gotten his hands on."
"Do you consider an emergent construct...a toy?"
"Oh...uhh...no offense," Humm-R let out a nervous chuckle as Raid-R transformed into vehicle mode and headed northward toward the now-inert Boomers. Humm-R quickly followed suit, assuming his own alternate form and tailing his New-Gen partner.
Suddenly, one of the Boomers transformed, but assumed a much more humanoid form than its contemporaries. This non-standard Boomer simply turned its head to face Raid-R as the other Boomers reactivated and encircled him. "You are within range to establish remote interface with the Renegade computer network. You wish to interrupt or otherwise interfere with the recruitment process of the foreign construct."
Another Boomer sped toward Humm-R, blocking his path as he attempted to ram this new type of Boomer-like robot. More Boomers moved in to surround the rugged Guardian, who tried in vain to transform.
"Your companion's transformation capability has been nullified. He is surrounded and defenseless. If you do not wish to see him destroyed, you will utilize your remote interface to accelerate the recruitment process."
Raid-R froze.
"As anticipated, you are unable to determine the correct course of action. You are determined to complete your initial objective, but do not wish to witness the termination of your companion."
"Don't worry about me, kid. Just jack in and stop that 'recruitment' process."
"His concern for your well being prevents him from accepting your command, Guardian Humm-R."
"Wait...Rumble?"
"That designation has been renounced. I have self-assigned the new designation of Shockblast."
"Well, 'Shockblast,' he's not gonna help CyKill 'recruit' Skybolt."
"Correction: His inaction will permit sufficient time for Dr. Go to bypass Skybolt's data encryption."
Raid-R spun around quickly and fired on Shockblast. Unfortunately, the blast left only a small scratch on the Boomer commander's armor. "I...made...a promise." He fired again, only to meet with similarly disappointing results.
"Your firepower is insufficient."
Raid-R didn't listen and continued to fire at the same spot on Shockblast's chest. "I made a promise," he repeated, establishing an interface while continuing to fire away.
"It is a promise you were unable to keep," Shockblast icily taunted as the sound of a jet engine approached.

A trip to Camp Zairo
New Post has been published on https://www.blueprint.ng/a-trip-to-camp-zairo/
A trip to Camp Zairo
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, was on operational visit to Camp Zairo, the former command and control centre of the Boko Haram terrorists, to confirm the recent recapture of the camp by troops. MUSA UMAR BOLOGI, who is in the frontlines reports. The journey to Sambisa forest The combat helicopter touched down at Bitta, a small settlement in the Sambisa forest, after about 50 minutes flight from Maiduguri. Apart from troops and their arsenals, no other persons were seen in Bitta, which is now a ghost of its former self. Boko Haram terrorists ransacked all settlements when they took over the Sambisa forest, after they were chanced out from the hinterland by troops in 2014. At the initial take off, the helicopter maintain a high altitude, but came down so low about 20 minutes to landing in the Sambis forest. For journalists in entourage, this could mean a suicide mission. The thought was that the helicopter could be vulnerable to a terrorist target, which could be hiding on a tree. But this was not like a movie, the military have really dominated the general area of the forest, and the rea is secured from such an assault. Looking down from the helicopter, one could see small erstwhile settlements destroyed by the terrorists, and several military locations in the forest. And like other locations in the forest, troops are stationed in Bitta as part of efforts to dominate the general area and stop the terrorists from regrouping. Sambisa forest is about 60 km. south east of Maiduguri, Borno State. It occupies parts of the states of Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi along the corridor Darazo, Jigawa, and some parts of Kano state farther north. It is administered by Askira/Uba in the south; Damboa in the southwest; and by Konduga and Jere in the west. The name of the forest comes from the village of Sambisa which is on the border with Gwoza in the East. The Sambisa forest has sparse vegetation is the norm. Most of the vegetation is typical of the Sudan Savanna although, because of human activity, some parts have become more like the Sahel savanna. The forest consists of a mixture of open woodland and sections of very dense vegetation of short trees and thorny bushes.
Moving towards Camp Zairo The troops first captured Camp Zairo, the command and control centre of the Boko Haram terrorists in the Sambisa forest in December 2016. However, the terrorists later regrouped in the forest and began to launch pockets of attacks. In January 2018, the military recaptured the Camp Zairo and sacked the factional leader of the Boko Haram terrorists, Abubakar Shekau, who is now on the run, disguising in woman attire, according to the military. Shekau, in a video he later released, disclosed he had suffered heavy casualty during the military raid and said he preferred to die than being captured. His statement gave credence to the military’s claim that the terrorists had been greatly decimated and defeated. The Nigerian Army has promised three million naira reward for anybody that provides useful information that could lead to the arrest of the terrorists’ leader. The Sambisa forest is a difficult terrain both in the wet (May and September/October) and dry (November to May) seasons. In the wet season the terrain is usually swampy and water lodged. While in the dry season it is sandy and dusty. Troops and movement of equipment is very difficult during the wet season. Moving from one location to the other in the forest was a tedious task because of its sandy nature. Hilux vehicles could not perform this duty. An Mrap – an ambush and mines resistant vehicle- was used to move the COAS and his team from one location to the other. Ventilation in the M-rap was not too good, and the only window that could be opened for fresh air to come in had to be partially opened to prevent dust from coming into to vehicle. From Bitta, it took about 25 minutes to get to Tokumbere, another erstwhile settlement in the forest. At Tokunbere troops were stationed with equipment to maintain dominance of the area. The army chief and his entourage spent quite sometime in the location, as they were conducted round the location. He also interacted with troops, trying to understand the challenges they face and how to quickly address them.
The Camp Zairo Moving slowly, the M-rap struggled through the sand and we arrived Camp Zairo at about 4:15pm. Camp Zairo was originally called “Sabil Hida”, meaning the “righteous place”, but the name was changed by the terrorists to fit their evil interest. At Came Zairo, the army chief was conducted round the Battle Groups 1 and 2 deployments locations, the new borehole and shown some of captured Boko Haram terrorists Armoured Fighting vehicles and equipment. In his address to troops the COAS charged them to capture the factional leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau “red handed” and hand over to him. “We must move across wherever this criminal is to catch him red handed. I want you to get him by hand,” he said. “On behalf of Mr. President I say congratulations to all of you for clearing this Sambisa forest. As far as we are concern we have come to the end of this operation. What is remaining now is the Lake Chad waters. And we hope to do that also very soon. “Meanwhile, we all know these criminals are still on the run. We must make sure we get they were ever they are in around this area. We must not allow them to escape. That means every day you must go on patrols, lay ambush for them and go on raids. This is the time we have to consolidate and ensure that this place is safe; and never for these criminals to come back to this forest. “The Federal government is doing a lot, as we are expecting more equipment to be procured for our operations. You are very much aware of the National Economic Council support for us to procure equipment for our operations already we have made all our requirements and it is being considered. “Also you welfare is very important to us. We will make sure that you get all your entitlements, and also ensure regular rotations are carried out. Plans are on for those that have stayed here for long to be rotated. This is in our plans and we must do it.” The said the army would transform the Sambisa forest, apart from being its training area (Nigerian Army Small Championship was staged in the forest in March 2017), to a broad defence establishment “in terms of the provision of basic requirement for the comfort of troops in order to be more effective in their operation.” “We are already working hard to make sure that the first set of facilities is brought here. Be rest assured all you challenges; all you requirements will be taken care off. “We are going to have some special packages for those of you that have penetrated this forest and did Mr. President proud,” Buratai said. The army chief also addressed and interacted with the elements of Cameroonian Defence Forces in the area. Buratai acknowledged the efforts of other services and the security agencies in the capture of the Sambisa forest and fight against Boko Haram terrorists. The Theater Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Rogers Nicholas during an interview at the Sambisa forest that his major task by the army chief after his (Nicholas’s)appointment was to recapture Camp Zairo and ensure total dislodgement of the terrorists from the Sambisa forest. “Today our presence here is to further confirm that the Nigerian Armed Forces has completely destroyed Boko Harm in Sambisa forest, and we are presently occupying Camp Zairo and other small camps in the Sambisa forest,” he said. “This is to show that the heart and mind of Boko Haram has been broken in the Sambisa forest.” “We are still going round the forest for some of them that are hiding in the holes here and there and fish them out. The visit of the Chief of Army Staff here today is to see and further confirm that Boko Haram has been completely defeated in Sambisa forest.”
Visits to Gubi, Bama, Dikwa While the Chief of Army Staff and his team were at Sambisa Forest, the Chief of Training and Operations, Maj. Gen. David Ahmadu, Director Military Intelligence, Maj. Gen. AA Tarfa and Provost Marshal, Maj. Gen. AT Hamman led other teams to 5 Brigade, 21 and 22 Brigades Nigerian Army at Gubio, Bama and Dikwa, respectively. Their visits, according to the army spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, followed the same pattern with that of the Chief of Army Staff. “They received briefing, went round troops deployments, addressed and interacted with the troops,” he said. “They were equally accompanied by other senior officers from the Army Headquarters and the Theatre Command.”

The Autobots and their human allies will need the aid of other heroes, as well as unexpected allies, in order to face this approaching doom. For they must work together to survive, or fall one by one.
