All too frequently do we paint trans people as victims who can’t stand up for themselves. In reality, they’re victims who not only stand up for themselves, but for others as well. I wanted to find imagery that expressed that, which is why I chose this format.

I decided to do a quick sketch to hit on Cava’s point on normalizing the similarities in individuals instead of the differences between trans and cis folk. There is not a clear line between cis and trans people- and there is a multitude of a range when it comes to gender identity- different for every person. The struggles that transgender people face are extremely essential to this conversation- but at times it’s nice to come down to the bones of the issue and face the overlying importance that we are all humans. With our gross little bodies living on a tiny little ball of dirt.

Peter Cava listed 6 suggestions for participating in trans activism. The one that spoke to me the most is to not simplify things relating to transgender people, but to remember the impact of intersectionality that trans people experience in their lives. They often face discrimination from multiple parts of their identity. As Audre Lorde said, “There is no such things as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives.”

This piece of advice from Cava resonated with me the most because of how liberating and complex it can be. Trans people have such unique stories to tell and when they break away from the shackles of conformity, they become so much stronger!
