Trans YA Books for Your 2023 TBR Pile

The last time there was a big B&N sale, I knew I had to stock up on some YA books -- and as I was sifting through my frankly absurdly long to-be-read list, I realized that there were more than a few YA books centering trans and BIPOC characters. I was so excited by this, and hope there are even more books centering BIPOC trans characters in 2024. For now, here are 5 trans YA books -- available now! -- that you should bump up to the very top of your TBR:

Man O' War by Cory McCarthy

Young adult publishers have been expanding trans representation more and more over the last decade, though of course there's always more work to be done. This means I had dozens of excellent options for this challenge!

I ultimately decided to read Man O'War because it was challenged in another county in my state. I wanted to borrow the book from a library in my consortium to boost its circulation numbers, doing a little bit of work to protect it in the event of a hypothetical future challenge. (Remember, folks: the more you use your library services, the more we can defend them to people who would prefer we didn't exist.)

I am so glad I chose to read this book. River McIntyre's voice is so distinctive, alternately funny and heartbreaking, and their coming of age was beautiful to watch. The scope of this story is long, spanning years, but the pacing never feels too slow. While River experiences hardship, they also find uniquely queer joy. Overall, this book is a wonderful and timely reminder that trans lives are meaningful, complex, and full of potential for joy and fulfillment.

Also, there are fish and marine mammals. Always a plus.

A Linked Universe meets The Dark Crystal AU! I don't even remember what started it at this point. I remembered that the Dark Crystal and Age of Resistance are things I like, blinked, and woke up three days later with an AU and a bunch of art.

The designs and the story are a wip and for fun so expect a lot of variation! (I have a few different beginnings, ideas for different designs, etc)! :D
