Transistor Chapter 24
“Oh, no,” Anika said in a very firm voice. “No way. You do not disappear for twenty years and then get to grill my girlfriends like I’m sixteen years old.”
“I’m just trying to get to know her…them,” Remiel said.
He did actually sound very goodnatured just now and not like he was trying to grill them, just like he was curious about his daughter's life, but I totally get where Anika is coming from.
There needs to be a conversation about why he has been away so long before he gets any in depth details about her life.
He can probably have their meet cute story though. It's sweet and they need something sweet to help break some of the tension in here.

Tube vs Transistor war settled in 1968
Yup, over half a century ago. Back then the biggest golden ear was J Gordon Holt hidden away in the dry US southwest. He ran, hell he was "Stereophile magazine." You could tell he was sophisticated as he used his first initial before his name. Manufacturers sent him stuff and waited on the judgement. He was important.
All others came after, and used JGH as the measure. Some disagreed with him others accused him of collusion with unnamed forces. (TAS)
So the war was joined and tubes did not win. WHAT?! OK lets limit this to Power Amplifiers which back in this time were not that powerful. 60 Watts was huge.
In 1968 the best transistor amps were Dynaco 120, SAE Mk II, and Marantz Model 15. Interesting that the Marantz 15 is far more respected and valuable than the Dynaco 120 or SAE today. In fact I would not give the Dynaco 120 any attention if I saw one. There are more than a few around.
Soon thereafter the Harman Kardon Citation 12 would usurp the transistor amp crown (1972), and soon after that the super amp wars would begin. 400Watts 700 Watts just add more transistors!
All these first guys were roughly 60 Watts per side into an 8 Ohm load.
The Tube amps in the comparison were the Marantz Model 9 mono blocks at 70 W/c, The Dynaco ST-70 35 W/c. The battle was joined in a review of the then New SAE MK II from the newcomer SAE in California. Marantz and Dynaco were East Coast.
Today the least expensive of those tubers would be the ST-70 at about $1200.00 average. The Marantz 9 are very rare and expensive. A recent not working pair was on offer for over $8000.00
They compared these devices to each other and used the best available speakers of the day. Overall the SAE won.
Quoted from the article:
"Generally, the SAE Mark II gave the impression of being as close to absolute perfection as any amplifier we have ever heard. On all types of speaker systems, its overall sound was extremely smooth and transparent, without a trace of perceptible hardness or graininess. Lows were very deep, tight and solid, with no sense of restriction due to the amplifier."
full article is here https://www.stereophile.com/content/sae-mark-ii-power-amplifier
This was the best they could get in the late 60s and it was not too bad by today's standards. The KLH model 9 speakers are still coveted for example.
Since then both sides have improved their game. But this was the watershed moment. Transistors could do things that tubes could not and those things were better. Mostly it was the Bass, but also mid-range and highs depending on the speakers.
The manufacturers thought there was more to work with in solid state. They preferred the results, and they were comparing their new stuff to their old stuff. Harman Kardon and Marantz kept improving their solid state products. Tubes were abandoned by almost everyone.
If you were to compare the sound of any of those devices to more recent products the differences would be subtle. I have a Citation 12 and it does sound very nice and clear. My franken amp has more umph and authority but it is almost 4 times the power. There is no umph meter.
The thing is this is when better was probably actually better. Higher damping factors to better control the speakers. More current to provide better drive. It is all about controlling the speaker after all. Then better became just the things people liked more. New lines of battle were drawn. The fight rejoined. Tube sound!
This was the time that Audio Research stuck their banner on the side of the vacuum and put out there classic lines of amplifiers and preamplifiers. Even the visionary William Zane Johnson the founder of ARC tried to go solid state in the 80s. But it was not to be. Anything they make must have at least one tube to satisfy the lust for glass of their clientele.
Since then tube designs are still based on concepts from the 60s and earlier. The newest tubes date from 1958. Transistors have explored new technology and topology. More voltages more current capacity today.
My preferences are clear. Power amps are better when solid state. Preamplifiers I go either way. For a long time I had a pure tube preamp and only recently went to a hybrid with just one tube. The hybrid is more clear and detailed. Less tube fuzz and phony "space". But then only very small differences. Most people would not notice them.
My point is this. Today it is preferences. I like this more than that. It is not that this device is more accurate or honest. Some people like lots of sugar in their coffee. Some people like sugar in their sound.
Black no sugar for me.

I finally finished Transistor and I’ll be honest
it was super underwhelming after Bastion
like the game play was better in terms of variety of attacks and creating the types of moves you preferred compared to Bastion even if I’m still not fond of more turn based systems
but the story telling was a huge step back
so many people said the ending was sad and like sure
if I knew anything about either main character
I knew more about Royce than Red because he was able to talk about himself and his desires and feelings

The Dark End Of The Street featuring the amazing vocals of the gorgeous Kaity Joyce. We were fans of Kaity Joyce as soon as we heard her for the first time. We are so happy our friend joined us on the lead track of our recent EP album ‘Urban Crime’. Here is our Swamp Music Players -Youtube music video for her wonderful cover of “The Dark End Of The Street”. As with our style we go for a retro-modern take on American music. Tranistorized Americana and Kaity Joyce’s hip soulful vocals gives this Country classic more of a contemporary ‘Urban Cowboy’ feel. This is entirely intemtional as we do not follow trends. I hope you like our song and new music video and you will smash that subscribe button and like and share. Our continued success depends on you !

Lyrics for The Dark End Of The Street - 'At the dark end of the street That is where we always meet Hiding in shadows where we don't belong Living in darkness, to hide alone You and me, at the dark end of the street You and me I know a time has gonna take it's toll We have to pay for the love we stole It's a sin and we know it's wrong Oh, our love keeps going on strong Steal away to the dark end of the street You and me They gonna find us, they gonna find us They gonna find us love someday You and me, at the dark end of the street You and me When the daylight all goes around And by chance we're both down the town Please meet, just walk, walk on by Oh, darling, please don't you cry You and me, at the dark end of the street You and me'
