Stranger in the Night: Beast of Bray Road
It's something that cannot be, and yet, there it stands. The paradox quickly overwhelms any rational mind.
A quick drubbing of two heavy feet on the pavement behind you, an impossible movement of hairy limbs to one side, and suddenly two lemon eyes fearlessly search your own with uncanny, brazen mockery. You're transfixed, chilled, and completely bewildered. Once those lemon eyes have transfixed you with their cogent stare for a few eternal moments, the creature's head snaps away; fangs glinting, leaving you dazed as its hulking from leaps into the brambles or hurdles a stone fence to drop twenty feet onto a creek bed. After a parting glimpse of matted dark fur, all you want is to be anywhere else. As your foot jams on the accelerator or you stumble into a run, willing your legs to hightail it in the opposite direction, you are desperately grateful to have survived this unholy meeting of strangers in the night.
After the night really is stranger if you live in Walworth County or Jefferson County.
The dark hours, the witching hours, are when the creature dubbed the Beast of Bray Road most often shows itself. This enigmatic "thing," as most witnesses tend to call it, was named after a country lane east of Elkhorn, a small town squarely in the center of Walworth County, where it was seen by the first witnesses to go public. Over the past six decades, it has shocked as many as three dozen area residents with its sudden, sporadic appearances.
The first known sighting was in 1936, when a security watchman at a convent and home for the developmentally disabled in Jefferson County made an unsettling discovery one night as the clock neared midnight. Straining to see in the shadows, Mark Schackelman thought he made out something digging in an old Native American burial mound behind the main building. Thinking it must be a dog, he trained his flashlight on the animal. With a shock, he realized that it was not a dog but a man-size, shaggy creature with pointed ears and three long claws on each hand. Years later, he told his son, Joseph, he considered it to be a "demon from hell."
Other sightings occurred throughout the '60s, '70s, and '80s in Jefferson and Walworth counties, with puzzled and frightened witnesses sometimes calling local police in an effort to find out what exactly they had seen. Unbeknownst to one another, surrounding communities whispered for years about a creature known by the local names Bluff Monster or the Eddy.
The whisperings became public for the first time in December 1991, when rumors began to circulate around Elkhorn. People claimed that a shaggy, manlike wolf-headed creature was haunting the cornfields and woods around Bray Road, a country byway several miles long and lined with farms owned by the same families for decades. Eyewitnesses were calling this creature a werewolf.
Jon Fredrickson, the county's animal control officer, used the "W" word on the manila file folder in which he stored all the queries trickling into his office. One story was from witness Lori Endrizzi, who saw the "manimal" kneeling by the side of the road and holding what looked like roadkill in its paws. Fredrickson speculated that perhaps the witness were saying a "deformed coyote." But Endrizzi insisted that if werewolves existed, this creature would be one.
As other witnesses began to speak up, it became apparent that the hairy phenomenon was not limited to Bray Road. In fact, the sightings went back decades and crossed county lines, meaning either that a reproducing family of such creatures existed or that the "thing" was very long-lived and able to travel great distances.
The witnesses, with one or two exceptions, seemed trustworthy. Most were reluctant, and many felt fear when recalling their encounters. There was no single "type" of witness either. The witnesses were male and female, children and the elderly, white-collar and blue-collar, and local folks as well as those just passing through. Almost all said something like, "I Know what I saw, and nothing is going to change that."
This descriptions were similar: height between five and seven feet; hairy shaggy and often extremely wild; coloration dark brown, sometimes gray or silver streaks or tips. Those who had a good look usually reported the creatures being like a wolf or German shepherd, with pointy ears, although some have claimed the head was apelike. The creature was sometimes seen standing on two feet, other times being on all fours. The most compelling characteristic, however, was its aggressive stare.
One witness, Williams Bay businessman Marvin Kirschnik, who came forward in 2003, was able to corroborate the other sightings with one of his own in 1981. HIs was unusual in that it had happened in broad daylight. Driving along Highway 11 near Bray Road one August afternoon, Kirschnik became aware of a creature staring at him from behind a fallen tree. He pulled over and scrutinized the creature from the window of his van for a good minute, he estimated, as it returned his gaze. Finally, totally unnerved by its stare and by his inability to identify the beast, Kirschnik sped off. But he made a drawing of it as soon as he got home. Its resemblance to the descriptions of other witnesses is remarkable, although Kirschnik's drawing was made then years before the newspaper story broke.
Does the Beast still prowl? Stories keep rolling in. However, most of the recent sightings have been in places other places than Bray Road, which hasn't had one since the early '90s. A woman saw the creature in Washington County in the summer of 2003, and in May 2004, a Madison man saw a strange dog-ape beast prowling a sidewalk about one a.m. in a dimly lit residential area. Some Illinois have also reported seeing it in four different places in recent months.
One woman who regularly saw what she called the Bluff Monster while growing up in southern Jefferson County gave a description that makes the Beast sound more like Bigfoot than Wolfman. There have been other witnesses who felt that the creature bore Yeti-like traits. A professional couple from Kenosha both saw a seven-foot-tall, almost classic Sasquatch-type creature hurl a bridge rail into Honey Lake in eastern Walworth County. Some cryptozoologists-those who study unknown animals-have speculated that the Beast may indeed be a smaller species of Bigfoot.
Of course, there have been sightings of various bipedal canines around the world and elsewhere in the United States, including the Michigan Dog Man flap in the mid-1980s. But the Beast of Bray Road remains unique for the number of sightings and the worldwide attention it has received. As to the true nature of the Beast, probably only time and perhaps a video or a lucky capture will solve the mystery to everyone's satisfaction.

sick, sick, sick pt 3
“I thought you knew how to pick locks,” Steve shrugs, watching as Billy carefully unlocks the massive front door.
“I do,” Billy offers as he steps inside, head craning up to case the place. He’s looking for lights. None of them are on. He motions for Steve to follow him up the stairs. Steve closes the door a little too hard, causing Billy to press him against the wood paneling.
“Sorry,” Steve whispers, eyes wide, “Heavy door.”
“You’re a fucking idiot,” Billy hisses, pulling back as he continues up the stairs, idiotic boyfriend at his feet.
Billy leads him to the study, opening the door slowly and then begins his search for the money. While Billy looks, Steve takes in the room. Wonders if the huge desk in the center of the room is where this asshole fucks his boyfriend. However, he’s distracted by that thought when Billy curses. He turns his attention to find Billy pushing papers off the desk and then digging through filing cabinets. Steve walks around the room, looking the Manila envelope he’s heard so much about when he trips over a big metal safe.
“Wouldn’t be in there, would it?” Steve asks as he rubs his tender shin.
Billy groans lowly, plops down on his ass in front of the safe and attempts a few combinations. As Billy keeps failing, Steve keeps his eyes trained on the door. His breath hitches as a tall and fat man opens it.
“Uh, sweetheart?” Steve tries and Billy motions him to shut up as he attempts another code.
“No, really. I
 turn around, Billy.”
“For fucks sake, Steve! What?” Billy turns to see Linden standing behind him. “Oh.”

Helm is an intimate, 24-seat restaurant is an expression of Chef Josh Boutwood’s life experiences and culinary training. Designed with a minimalist eye in palettes of black, copper, and grey. Helm’s dining experience centers Josh’s multi-course tasting menu and the one-on- one interaction between the kitchen and the guest.
At Helm, dining becomes theater, an interactive form of culinary performance art.
Our 10-course meal took inspiration from Magellan's voyage to the Philippines. It was a journey that took 1080 days compressed by Boutwood in just two delicious hours over ten mouthwatering bites. In a nutshell, it was an international menu, with each dish composed of flavours and ingredients from a country Magellan visited sewn altogether by the ingenuity of the talented chef.

Ember Manila is a charcoal grill specialty restaurant by Chef Josh Boutwood. Contrary to chef's other concept restaurants where the interior is somewhat masculine, Ember has done the opposite without deviating from its core element: no-frills, uncomplicated, and warm.
This restaurant in Makati has a modern space-like yet chic style, enough to make you feel at home and welcome. The cozy seats along the curved bar allow diners to witness the magic happening in the open kitchen. It also has a curated one-page menu categorized into small plates like tapas, large plates like family sharing dishes, side plates, and sweets to complete the ensemble. Chef Josh loves biodynamic and natural wines which you can order to pair with your meal.
We did not miss the chance to try chef's signature dish, the charcoal-grilled steak, and we loved it for the smoky char flavor and the locked in juiciness of the meat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last but not the least, our 3rd Chef Josh Bautwood's restaurant here in Metro Manila, is Test Kitchen in Rockwell. Here, we celebrated my boyfriend's birthday with his mom (read: naks part of the family lol) and had an intimate dinner for three. We've only fancied trying fine dining tasting menus recently, and we learned that these kind of food require diner to slow down and savor the details; they took the time and only ask the same of you (key takeaway from Mark Mylod's The Menu, if you ask me haha)
Downstairs is where all the action is—get your minds out of the gutter—and where you can really see the kitchen’s cogs turning. But upstairs is where true magic takes place, especially if you’re a real nerd about food. The second floor is where they age the meats, ferment the ingredients and store the spices. This is where you can geek out on the fermented fruits and ingredients, house-made garum (fish sauce) and special spices.
We heard that Chef is opening a new restaurant named "The Dandy Lion" in Ayala Triangle Garden, and we are more than excited to try it once it opens its doors to the public.

Five Interesting Nonfiction Books
Malaya: Essays on Freedom by Cinelle Barnes
As an undocumented teenager living in New York, her journey of self-discovery was just beginning. Because she couldn’t get a driver’s license or file taxes, Cinelle worked as a cleaning lady and a nanny and took other odd jobs—and learned to look over her shoulder, hoping she wouldn’t get caught. When she falls in love and marries a white man from the South, Cinelle finds herself trying to adjust to the thorny underbelly of “southern hospitality” while dealing with being a new mother, an immigrant affected by PTSD, and a woman with a brown body in a profoundly white world. From her immigration to the United States, to navigating a broken legal system, to balancing assimilation and a sense of self, Cinelle comes to rely on her resilience and her faith in the human spirit to survive and come of age all over again. Lyrical, emotionally driven, and told through stories both lived and overheard, Cinelle’s intensely personal, yet universal, exploration of race, class, and identity redefines what it means to be a woman—and an American—in a divided country. (goodreads.com)
2. Lola's House: Filipino Women Living with War by M. Evelina Galang
During World War II more than one thousand Filipinas were kidnapped by the Imperial Japanese Army. Lolas’ House tells the stories of sixteen surviving Filipino “comfort women.”
M. Evelina Galang enters into the lives of the women at Lolas’ House, a community center in metro Manila. She accompanies them to the sites of their abduction and protests with them at the gates of the Japanese embassy. Each woman gives her testimony, and even though the women relive their horror at each telling, they offer their stories so that no woman anywhere should suffer wartime rape and torture.
Lolas’ House is a book of testimony, but it is also a book of witness, of survival, and of the female body. Intensely personal and globally political, it is the legacy of Lolas’ House to the world. (goodreads.com)
3. Empire of Care: Nurses and Migration in Filipino American History by Catherine Ceniza Choy
In western countries, including the United States, foreign-trained nurses constitute a crucial labor supply. Far and away the largest number of these nurses come from the Philippines. Why is it that a developing nation with a comparatively greater need for trained medical professionals sends so many of its nurses to work in wealthier countries? Catherine Ceniza Choy engages this question through an examination of the unique relationship between the professionalization of nursing and the twentieth-century migration of Filipinos to the United States. The first book-length study of the history of Filipino nurses in the United States, Empire of Care brings to the fore the complicated connections among nursing, American colonialism, and the racialization of Filipinos . Choy conducted extensive interviews with Filipino nurses in New York City and spoke with leading Filipino nurses across the United States. She combines their perspectives with various others—including those of Philippine and American government and health officials—to demonstrate how the desire of Filipino nurses to migrate abroad cannot be reduced to economic logic, but must instead be understood as a fundamentally transnational process. She argues that the origins of Filipino nurse migrations do not lie in the Philippines' independence in 1946 or the relaxation of U.S. immigration rules in 1965, but rather in the creation of an Americanized hospital training system during the period of early-twentieth-century colonial rule. Choy challenges celebratory narratives regarding professional migrants’ mobility by analyzing the scapegoating of Filipino nurses during difficult political times, the absence of professional solidarity between Filipino and American nurses, and the exploitation of foreign-trained nurses through temporary work visas. She shows how the culture of American imperialism persists today, continuing to shape the reception of Filipino nurses in the United States. (goodreads.com)
4. Monsoon Mansion by Cinelle Barnes
Told with a lyrical, almost-dreamlike voice as intoxicating as the moonflowers and orchids that inhabit this world, Monsoon Mansion is a harrowing yet triumphant coming-of-age memoir exploring the dark, troubled waters of a family's rise and fall from grace in the Philippines. It would take a young warrior to survive it. Cinelle Barnes was barely three years old when her family moved into Mansion Royale, a stately ten-bedroom home in the Philippines. Filled with her mother's opulent social aspirations and the gloriously excessive evidence of her father's self-made success, it was a girl's storybook playland. But when a monsoon hits, her father leaves, and her mother's terrible lover takes the reins, Cinelle's fantastical childhood turns toward tyranny she could never have imagined. Formerly a home worthy of magazines and lavish parties, Mansion Royale becomes a dangerous shell of the splendid palace it had once been. In this remarkable ode to survival, Cinelle creates something magical out of her truth--underscored by her complicated relationship with her mother. Through a tangle of tragedy and betrayal emerges a revelatory journey of perseverance and strength, of grit and beauty, and of coming to terms with the price of family--and what it takes to grow up. (seattle.bibliocommons.com)
5. Somewhere in the Middle: A journey to the Philippines in search of roots, belonging, and identity by Deborah Francisco Douglas
Half Filipino but raised in an American household, Deborah Francisco Douglas had always longed to know more about her Filipino heritage. So when a thick government-issued envelope arrived at her door announcing her assignment to the Philippines as a Peace Corps Volunteer, she snatched the opportunity and set out on a journey of self-discovery, travel, and adventure. Arriving in the mountain town of Baguio City, Philippines, she was introduced to a life of obnoxious roosters, bucket baths, and kids shouting her name every time she walked down the street. Despite her attempts to get involved in the community, her desire for belonging and identity did not materialize as quickly as planned. Realizing that “Filipino time” means nothing ever happens in a hurry, Deborah braces for the journey ahead, hoping to find answers, and above all, to find herself. Filled with warmth and humor, Somewhere in the Middle captures the simple joy found in ordinary moments and in the people we share our lives with, shedding new light on what it truly means to find the place where you belong. Whether you’re hoping to unearth your own cultural roots, volunteer abroad, or find your next travel adventure, this memoir offers inspiration for all those yearning to discover who they are and where they belong in the world. MBBS in the Philippines: A Good Option for Indian Students
Choosing the right destination for pursuing MBBS is a crucial decision for aspiring doctors. For Indian students, the Philippines has become an increasingly popular option in recent years. The country offers a high-quality education system, affordable fees, and a friendly environment that attracts students from around the world. Here's why MBBS in the Philippines is a good choice for Indian students.
1. Affordable Tuition Fees: One of the primary reasons Indian students choose the Philippines for MBBS is the affordable tuition fees. Compared to private medical colleges in India and other countries, the Philippines offers an economical option without compromising on the quality of education.
2. English Medium Instruction: All medical courses in the Philippines are taught in English, which is a significant advantage for Indian students. As English is widely spoken and understood in India, students can easily adapt to the language of instruction without any language barrier.
3. Recognized Universities: The Philippines boasts a number of globally recognized medical universities, such as the University of Santo Tomas and the University of the Philippines Manila. These universities offer degrees that are recognized by international medical bodies, including the Medical Council of India (MCI), now known as NMC.

How Co-working Spaces in Manila Empower Female Entrepreneurs
Manila, a vibrant city, is rapidly transforming into a hotbed of innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration. Perhaps the most active contributor to this transformation is the growth of shared workspaces. Shared office co-working spaces are changing not only how business is conducted but also providing a voice to a particular group of pioneers—women entrepreneurs.
Tumblr media
For most businesses, challenges faced by women entrepreneurs include combining responsibilities in the family sphere with the need to maneuver in sectors traditionally dominated by men. However, innovative co-working spaces in Manila offer them the ecosystem to handle such hurdles in their path toward success.
Co-working Spaces Rise in Manila
Indeed, Manila has enjoyed exponential growth in office shared spaces due to the demand for versatile, affordable, and forward-thinking work environments. These spaces integrate various professionals, such as startups, freelancers, or established companies, all collaborating in one place. What really inspires co-working spaces in Manila is their ability to adapt to whatever modern professionals need, making them ideal for women entrepreneurs.
Key Ways Co-working Spaces Empower Female Entrepreneurs
Inexpensive and Flexibility Workspace Solution
Affordability is one of the most significant advantages of co-working spaces. Renting a traditional office often requires substantial investment, which may be a challenge to be overcome for women who feel inspired to set up a business. Co-working spaces remove this barrier by offering very affordable membership plans. Their flexible terms also allow women to scale their workspace needs as their businesses grow.
For example, an up-and-coming entrepreneur might start with a hot desk and upgrade to a dedicated office in the same Manila co-working space as her business grows.
Networking Opportunities
Co-working is intrinsically collaborative, bringing together a diverse range of professionals from all over the world. Women entrepreneurs stand to see a strong network of similar-minded people, potential mentors, and collaborators for their projects.
Events like networking, workshops, and informal gatherings held in co-working Manila hubs will help build a community that brings women entrepreneurs together and establishes meaningful connections. These could lead to partnerships, clients, and knowledge-sharing that propels their ventures forward.
Resources and Support
The main facilities in a modern office co-working space are enough to cater to entrepreneurs' needs. Everything makes for a seamless work environment, from high-speed internet to meeting rooms, printing facilities, and even child-care service in some offices.
Many other co-working spaces in Manila also offer workshops, training programs, and mentorship just for women to help them set up a business. These spaces enable women entrepreneurs to enhance their skills and learn about the industry to always be one step ahead in the competitive market.
Encouraging Work-Life Balance
Balancing professional and personal responsibilities is often a challenge many women face. Co-working spaces are offering solutions by enabling a better work-life balance. Indeed, many co-working Manila spaces feature wellness zones, a fitness center, or even a relaxation area to inspire freelancers and entrepreneurs to take care of their well-being.
Also, proximity to residences, schools, and other child-care facilities enables women to work out time with much less stress, which again improves their efficiency.
Building a Community of Support
The culture in co-working spaces is generally inclusive and supportive, allowing female entrepreneurs to feel comfortable sharing their ideas and seeking feedback. Women-centered communities and support groups provide a platform for discussing challenges, celebrating successes, and inspiring one another.
Some co-working spaces even organize events celebrating women in business, further empowering them to make their mark.
Inspiring Stories of Success
From Manila's various female entrepreneurs, the idea of office co-working has been the primary vehicle that has driven their respective business ventures—from the newest tech innovators to more creative professionals—and they give kudos for their success to the provided space and resource-rich collaborative atmosphere.
Take, for example, Anna, a graphic designer who turned her freelancing into a successful design agency. Working from a Manila co-working space, she found access to a network of potential clients and collaborators that helped her expand her services and build a reputable brand.
Why Choose a Co-working Space in Manila?
For women embarking on entrepreneurial journeys, the choice of workspace plays a vital role in their success.
Here's why co-working spaces in Manila are ideal for female entrepreneurs:
Location Advantage: Most co-working spaces are strategically situated in Manila's business hubs, allowing easy access to clients, suppliers, and transportation networks.
Community Support: The inclusive atmosphere develops a sense of cooperation and personal growth.
Cost Efficiency: It is highly cost-effective due to flexible pricing plans that can fit any business, from the smallest to the largest.
In Essence
Co-working space in Manila are not just workstations; they are transformative platforms that enable women entrepreneurs to surmount challenges, achieve work-life balance, and thrive in competitive industries. With their affordability, flexibility, and supportive communities, these spaces drive a new wave of innovation and inclusivity in the business world.
Be it a novice entrepreneur or a pro, choosing an office co-working space might be the first step to success.
Get ready to unlock your potential in the vibrant world of co-working in Manila.

BUSINESS INSIGHTS FOR WEEK 11-12
Tumblr media
1. BER2BYTES
Our visit to Ber2Bytes revealed that the business offers affordable surplus laptops, particularly in its Cagayan de Oro branch. Ms. Rube Bongulan shared that their products are imported from Japan, ensuring quality for tech-savvy customers. However, one noticeable challenge they face is in the repair of devices, as some technical issues cannot be resolved in-house. The store's location at Metz Arcade provides accessibility, but the limited staff and shorter Sunday hours may impact their ability to handle customer flow efficiently. Despite these hurdles, Ber2Bytes maintains a strong reputation for affordability and compliance, with all necessary business permits and certifications in place. ----------------------------------------------------
2. ROSE APPAREL
Our interview with Marga at Rose Apparel highlighted the store's dedication to providing affordable and trendy women's clothing. While their products are sourced from Manila and are of good quality, the business occasionally struggles with a lack of customers, which impacts their sales. The store's single-staff setup might limit their ability to engage with potential buyers effectively, especially during peak hours. However, their convenient location at Metz Arcade offers them visibility and accessibility. ----------------------------------------------------
3. OSMEÑA HYDRAULIC HOSE AND BEARING CENTER INCORPORATED
Osmeña Hydraulic Hose and Bearing Center stands out for its long history and specialization in industrial supplies like hydraulic hoses and bearings. The business benefits from its well-trained staff, with Mr. Roy, the accountant, providing insights into their operations. While they have established themselves as a reliable source for quality products, their dependency on Manila-based suppliers could pose a challenge in times of logistical delays. Their adherence to safety and compliance is commendable, with all necessary certifications in place, ensuring trustworthiness in their operations. ----------------------------------------------------
4. MOTO TRUCK
MOTO TRUCK has established a strong presence in the spare parts market, with three branches and 30 staff members across locations. Ms. Yasmin Kris Hachero emphasized the importance of their training and seminars, which ensures a skilled workforce. The business has no apparent issues at present, according to Ms. Hachero, but staying competitive in a growing market requires consistent innovation. Their long-standing operation of 30 years reflects their stability and trust within the community, bolstered by thorough documentation and well-sourced supplies from China ----------------------------------------------------
5. WANNABEES FAMILY KTV
Our interview at Wannabees Family KTV revealed a business fueled by passion. Ms. Wilma Go's love for singing inspired the creation of this establishment, which offers a fun and relaxing environment for its customers. Despite being a new venture, having opened in November 2023, Wannabees is already making strides with creative promotions like their "Happy Hour." The cozy setup and strategic location make it a promising addition to the local entertainment scene. However, as they grow, they may need to address staffing limitations to ensure seamless operations.
