Hmmm. Not sure how I feel about this. Obviously, protestors shouldn’t be arrested.
But blocking traffic without any thru route is a legitimate hazard for people in emergency situations.
It’s also not clear, at this point, what the protests are for (or against). I mean, broadly speaking, the protests are to stop the bombing of innocent people in Gaza. And this is something I am extremely in favor of.
But like…how? In what way, specifically? I know that many people will reply, “Um. By stopping you idiot. It’s a pretty simple binary. Don’t do a genocide.”
I’ll agree that it’s very simple to oppose and stand against genocide. I too oppose and stand against it. But I don’t really agree that it’s a simple situation that a protest can address at this particular moment due to several factors:
1. The goals in BLM protests were extremely clear. There were plans and evidence and data about how to reform and dismantle police departments and reallocate public funding to meet social protection needs. Back then, the moral goal was as clear as it is now: “stop killing innocent unarmed people on the grounds of their race or ethnicity.” That remains true. But the practical goals aren’t present right now. “Stop giving money to Israel” is a moral stance, not a practical one. Even before 10/7, Hamas was firing rockets at civilian targets in israel — even though a ceasefire was in place. And the iron dome is as much a defensive structure as an offensive one, as it was and is responsible for intercepting incoming bombs before they reach civilian populations. “Stop sending money to Israel” as the whole of a stance is inadequate. It would eliminate Israel’s ability to cause harm, which would technically meet the stated goal of ending the bombing of Palestine. But it would also destroy Israel’s ability to intercept and stop attacks on its own civilians. And if you don’t agree that there are actually civilians in Israel, then you aren’t actually standing against genocide, but for it.
2. Black Lives Matter is a group. It is a movement. It had and has representatives that craft goals and work toward an achievable and clear vision. I am asking genuinely: what is the organization organizing and establishing the goals of these protests. It is very possible I have missed this information. So I’ll read up if that is the case. But from what I can tell, there is no cohesive group managing things. So, a number of good and bad faith activists are represented in these protests and I don’t know if an individual protest is one that Hamas and Hezbollah support/infiltrated or if it is a genuine grassroots effort from Palestinians or even from Jews who support Palestine. Because of this, I can’t get behind the “protests are supposed to be inconvenient” narrative for the way things are at this exact moment. Protests ARE supposed to be inconvenient but for A CAUSE. And I’m not sure whose cause is driving each protest.
I want people to demonstrate. I want people to protest. I want people to be effective. But I don’t really know how impeding emergency access to vital emergency services in the USA helps Palestinian civilians or sovereignty. I don’t know how it pressures politicians into issuing sanctions beyond “show them how many of us there are and maybe we’ll scare them into acting.” But acting for whom? For what purpose? With what consequences?
I know I’ll get hate for this. And I really hope and wish I don’t, but I will. But this isn’t like the Israelis who are very actively protesting their own government right now in support of Palestinians. Those Israelis are literally fighting and risking their lives and getting thrown in jail in the act of fighting the actual government and bad actors and laws responsible for the violent bombing of Palestine. And it’s functional for them because their votes actually impact the elections. Their lives actually get impacted by these laws and policies. They have specific goals related to achieving peace with Palestine based on their lives experiences.
People here in the US aren’t fighting in the same direct way that BLM was fighting in 2020 or that Israeli leftists are fighting now. But I don’t see any widespread understanding of threats against Israeli citizens and how to protect them, I don’t see detailed plans of how the USA should specify the the use of existing aid from us to Israel or that account for what will happen to Israelis OR American Jews in diaspora of Israel loses its only official international ally.
If these are all just demonstrative protests against genocide, then demonstrate against all the ongoing genocides the US is involved in.
If this is just protesting “ethnostates” when are we gonna protest against England for having an official religion with its church leader as the official state monarch? Or Ireland for establishing itself as Catholic nation Ireland is 88% Catholic. That’s a higher percentage of Catholics in Ireland than there are Jews in Israel. It’s constitution from 1937 gave the church “special position as the church of the majority.” Even though it replaced that explicit wording, it still says “The State acknowledges that the homage of public worship is due to Almighty God. It shall hold His Name in reverence, and shall respect and honour religion,” which excludes polytheistic religions entirely. So if we are supposed to oppose all religious ethnostates why are we suddenly only caring about Israel? Or the Vatican, which has its own state church as well as adherents around the world. Why aren’t we protesting Vatican City? Thailand’s constitution recognizes a that “The State should support and protect Buddhism.” Many Jews only wish for that to be true for Jews in Israel as well. If we are taking official state religions, Cambodia is 98 percent Buddhist and declares itself a buddhist state. Bhutan defines Buddhism as the official state religion, and states that Buddhism is “the spiritual heritage of Bhutan.”
Liechtenstein declares itself as a Catholic state, as do Malta and Monaco. Italy recognizes the Catholic Church as "independent and sovereign, each within its own sphere" and its constitution reserves to the Catholic faith singular position in regard to the organization of worship, as opposed to all other confessions. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, and Georgia have official state orthodox churches based on their location. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of religious states. So…Israel is unique as a religious state how, exactly? It is uniquely bad and different from these things how, exactly? Because the only issue I see inherent to its existence that is different from others is that this one has a lot of Jews. And the existence of Jews in a Jewish state is not in itself genocide. So it doesn’t fit the bill of the “stop the genocide” slogan. So rallying against ethnostates seems to be unrelated to these protests, despite its prevalence as a talking point online.
I’m just not sure. I’m not sure these protests have a meaningful central goal. And certainly not one that fosters any kind of long term peace or safety for all current inhabitants of the levant—regardless of religion or ethnicity. They also don’t demonstrate any meaningful understanding of foreign policy or anti-terrorism work—whether in support of or in opposition to current accepted methods. There’s just a lot of work not being done and a lot of people feeling like they’re doing something. But I don’t know what that thing is.
So, to me, that doesn’t really justify the threat to emergency services here in the US.
Protesters have been arrested and cars have been towed after they blocked all westbound lanes of the Bay Bridge Thursday morning. No cars have been able to get into San Francisco for hours. Westbound lanes of the bridge could be seen empty as traffic backed up.
Images show cars blocking the lanes on the eastern span of the bridge as the protesters call for a cease-fire in the Middle East. Protesters were lying down with white sheets over their bodies that said "Stop the genocide." They were also holding up large banners that said "Stop the genocide. No US military aid to Israel." CHP officials say that 50 arrests have been made and 15 cars were towed, but that they are expecting to make more arrests. They said that the protesters parked their cars on the bridge and threw their keys into the bay. They said that the protesters were spread throughout the traffic, making it difficult to clear the scene. CHP officers were going car by car to find ones that were abandoned.

Border crossings strain resources in Rio Grande Valley (AP) Elmer Maldonado spent a week in immigration custody with his 1-year-old son after crossing the Rio Grande through Texas to request asylum. One night, the Honduran father and son slept on the dirt under a bridge shivering from the cold temperatures at an intake site where large groups of migrants turn themselves in to Border Patrol officers. His experience illustrates a cycle that is repeating itself thousands of times a week amid a dramatic rise in migrant children and families at the U.S.-Mexico border: They arrive in the middle of the night by the dozens and are kept at outdoor intake sites, then taken to overcrowded detention facilities well past the 72-hour court-imposed limit. From there, the families are either released into the U.S. or expelled to Mexico, the lucky ones dropped off at a COVID-19 testing site with documents. Children traveling without their parents go to federal shelters that are also quickly filling up. The process is largely out of the public eye. The Associated Press has not been allowed in any of the Border Patrol facilities. Journalists are often limited by authorities even when going to the banks of the Rio Grande to witness the process and talk to immigrants.
Capitol fencing removed 77 days after deadly riot (USA Today) An imposing fence-line strung with razor wire has been removed from the outer perimeter of the U.S. Capitol complex, more than two months after the deadly siege. Capitol Police said Wednesday that local streets blocked by the network of barriers also had been re-opened to traffic, though authorities said they are prepared to “quickly ramp up security at a moment’s notice, if needed.” An inner-perimeter fence around the actual Capitol building will remain in place while police and lawmakers continue to hash out a long-term security plan.
US saw estimated 4,000 extra murders in 2020 amid surge in daily gun violence (Guardian) For exactly a year during the pandemic, the United States did not see a single high-profile public mass shooting. But a surge in daily gun violence contributed to an estimated 4,000 additional murders throughout 2020, in what experts warn will probably be the worst single-year increase in murders on record. Early estimates suggest the US may have seen at least 4,000 more murders last year than in 2019, and potentially as many as 5,000 more, according to projections based on FBI data, though complete official statistics will not be available until the fall. Many of the homicides are concentrated in communities of color that have historically seen the worst burden of daily gun violence, including in Philadelphia, St Louis, Chicago and Oakland.
In Myanmar, a New Resistance Rises (NYT) In a jungle in the borderlands of Myanmar, the troops sweated through basic training. They learned how to load a rifle, pull the pin of a hand grenade and assemble a firebomb. These cadets are not members of Myanmar’s military, which seized power last month and quickly imposed a battlefield brutality on the country’s populace. Instead, they are an eclectic corps of students, activists and ordinary office workers who believe that fighting back is the only way to defeat one of the world’s most ruthless armed forces. After weeks of peaceful protests, the frontline of Myanmar’s resistance to the Feb. 1 coup is mobilizing into a kind of guerrilla force. In the cities, protesters have built barricades to protect neighborhoods from military incursions and learned how to make smoke bombs on the internet. In the forests, they are training in basic warfare techniques and plotting to sabotage military-linked facilities. The opposition is a defensive response to the military’s mounting reign of terror. The Tatmadaw has cracked down on peaceful protesters and unarmed bystanders alike, killing at least 275 people since the coup, according to a monitoring group.
Torch relay for Tokyo Olympics kicks off its 121-day journey (AP) The torch relay for the postponed Tokyo Olympics began its 121-day journey across Japan on Thursday and is headed toward the opening ceremony in Tokyo on July 23. The relay began in northeastern Fukushima prefecture, the area that was devastated by the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and the meltdown of three nuclear reactors. About 18,000 died in the tragedy. About 10,000 runners are expected to take part, with the relay touching Japan’s 47 prefectures.
Taiwan beefing up its defenses (South China Morning Post) Taiwan has begun mass production of a long-range missile and is developing three other models, a senior official said on Thursday, in a rare admission of efforts to develop strike capacity amid growing pressure from mainland China. The island’s armed forces are in the middle of a modernization program to offer a more effective deterrent, including the ability to hit back at bases deep within mainland China in the event of a conflict.
Some Australians return home as others evacuated in floods crisis (Reuters) Australians hit by devastating floodwaters began returning to their homes on Thursday as skies cleared and authorities accelerated clean-up efforts, though fresh evacuation orders were issued in some areas where water levels were still rising. Relentless rains for five straight days—the worst downpour in more than half a century—burst river banks, inundating homes, roads, bridges and farms and cutting off entire towns in Australia’s east. More than 40,000 people were forced to move to safe zones and two men were killed after their cars became trapped in floodwaters. Water continued to flow from overloaded dams and rivers on Thursday, particularly in New South Wales state, leading authorities to urge caution. Major flooding also continues in Sydney’s western suburbs of North Richmond and Windsor, while fresh evacuation orders were issued for some areas in the centre of the state.
One man’s mission offers Beirut neighbourhood a vision of hope after blast (Reuters) The sheer scale of the destruction in Beirut’s Karantina district after the massive explosion at the port last August made rebuilding a daunting feat. That was where Marc Torbey El Helou, a charity worker, came in. The low-income neighbourhood was one of the closest to the blast that killed 200 people. It stands across from the giant, mutilated grain silo that has become a symbol of the tragedy. Helou decided a day after the explosion to dedicate himself, and the aid group he runs, to rebuilding the neighbourhood. Just removing the rubble required 300 truckloads. Some buildings needed immediate help to stop them collapsing. Helou says the same of Karantina’s residents. “There were children here who would not laugh or play for months.” Helou’s charity, Offre Joie (Joy of Giving), has repaired Lebanese districts hit by war and violence since 1985. “Unfortunately, it means we have the experience for this,” said Helou, 33, who has used a wheelchair since a diving accident in 2016. With the Lebanese state hollowed out by decades of corruption and failure, it fell to aid groups and volunteers like Helou to rebuild the city. Offre Joie took on six blocks in Karantina and nearby. That includes the homes of about 350 families. More than seven months after the explosion, one of the largest non-nuclear detonations on record, many residents have yet to return. But the streets are bustling with life again, and the buildings never looked so good. The charity’s budget was trapped in the bank thanks to controls imposed during Lebanon’s financial crisis. But donations poured in from abroad: up to three million dollars in cash, construction material and containers full of food. Thousands of volunteers also came, including engineers and psychologists.
Musical Chairs But The Song Never Ends (NYT) Four elections in two years have failed to give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the necessary 61 seats to form a coalition government with a majority in Parliament. With more than 90% of Wednesday’s vote counted, Netanyahu’s right-wing alliance had 52 seats and his opponents had 56. And the gridlock extends beyond the election. Administrative stagnation has left Israel without a national budget for two consecutive years in the middle of a pandemic, and with several key Civil Service posts unstaffed. The idea that the political deadlock paralyzing the country isn’t going to get better, and in fact appears to have gotten worse, has Israelis pondering the viability of their electoral system, the functionality of their government and whether the divisions between the country’s various politics—secular and devout, right-wing and leftist, Jewish and Arab—have made the nation unmanageable. A Tel Aviv-based analyst said Israel isn’t yet a failed state, like Lebanon, because it still has institutions. “But there is definitely erosion,” she said. “Not having a budget for two years—this is really dangerous.”
Saudi official denies threat to harm UN Khashoggi investigator (Reuters) A senior Saudi official denied on Thursday he had threatened to harm the human rights expert who led the U.N. investigation into the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, after the United Nations confirmed the expert’s account of the threat. Agnes Callamard, the U.N. expert on summary killings, has said that a Saudi official threatened at a Jan. 2020 meeting in Geneva that she would be “taken care of” if she was not reined in following her investigation into the journalist’s murder. She said the remark was interpreted by U.N. officials as a “death threat”. The United Nations confirmed her account on Wednesday, describing the remark as a “threat”. Neither Callamard nor the United Nations has identified the Saudi official who made the remark. However, the head of Saudi Arabia’s human rights commission, Awwad Alawwad, identified himself as the official on Thursday, while denying he had intended any threat.
Stuck ship in Egypt’s Suez Canal imperils shipping worldwide (Washington Post) A skyscraper-sized cargo ship wedged across Egypt’s Suez Canal further imperiled global shipping Thursday as at least 150 other vessels needing to pass through the crucial waterway idled waiting for the obstruction to clear, authorities said. The Ever Given, a Panama-flagged ship that carries cargo between Asia and Europe, ran aground Tuesday in the narrow, man-made canal dividing continental Africa from the Sinai Peninsula. In the time since, efforts to free the ship using dredgers, digging and the aid of high tides have yet to push the container vessel aside—affecting billions of dollars’ worth of cargo. Overall, famed shipping journal Lloyd’s List estimates each day the Suez Canal is closed disrupts over $9 billion worth of goods that should be passing through the waterway. A quarter of all Suez Canal traffic a day comes from container ships like the Ever Given, the journal said. “Blocking something like the Suez Canal really sets in motion a number of dominos toppling each other over,” said Lars Jensen, chief executive of Denmark-based SeaIntelligence Consulting. “The effect is not only going to be the simple, immediate one with cargo being delayed over the next few weeks, but will actually have repercussions several months down the line for the supply chain.”

On the outskirts of the city, power lines sag and buzz, overloaded with electrons as the demand for air conditioning soars and the entire grid is pushed to the limit. In an Arizona heat wave, electricity is not a convenience, it is a tool for survival.
As the mercury rises, people die. The homeless cook to death on hot sidewalks. Older folks, their bodies unable to cope with the metabolic stress of extreme heat, suffer heart attacks and strokes. Hikers collapse from dehydration. As the climate warms, heat waves are growing longer, hotter, and more frequent. Since the 1960s, the average number of annual heat waves in 50 major American cities has tripled. They are also becoming more deadly. Last year, there were 181 heat-related deaths in Arizona’s Maricopa County, nearly three times the number from four years earlier. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2004 and 2017, about a quarter of all weather-related deaths were caused by excessive heat, far more than other natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes.
...........
“What will the Hurricane Katrina of extreme heat look like?” he wonders aloud as we sit in a cafe near the ASU campus. Katrina, which hit New Orleans in 2005, resulting in nearly 2,000 deaths and more than $100 billion in economic damage, demonstrated just how unprepared a city can be for extreme climate events.
“Hurricane Katrina caused a cascading failure of urban infrastructure in New Orleans that no one really predicted,” Chester explains. “Levees broke. People were stranded. Rescue operations failed. Extreme heat could lead to a similar cascading failure in Phoenix, exposing vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the region’s infrastructure that are difficult to foresee.”
In Chester’s view, a Phoenix heat catastrophe begins with a blackout.
..........
When the city goes dark, the order and convenience of modern life begin to fray. Without air conditioning, temperatures in homes and office buildings soar. (Ironically, new, energy-efficient buildings are tightly sealed, making them dangerous heat traps.) Traffic signals go out. Highways gridlock with people fleeing the city. Without power, gas pumps don’t work, leaving vehicles stranded with empty tanks. Water pipes crack from the heat, and water pumps fail, leaving people scrounging for fresh water. Hospitals overflow with people suffering from heat exhaustion and heatstroke. If there are wildfires, the air will become hazy and difficult to breathe. If a blackout during extreme heat continues for long, rioting, looting, and arson could begin.
And people will start dying. How many? “Katrina-like numbers,” Chester predicts. Which is to say, thousands. Chester describes all this coolly, as if a Phoenix heat apocalypse is a matter of fact, not hypothesis.
“How likely is this to happen?” I ask.
“It’s more a question of when,” Chester says, “not if.”
Extreme heat is the most direct, tangible, and deadly consequence of our hellbent consumption of fossil fuels. Rising carbon-dioxide levels in the atmosphere trap heat, which is fundamentally changing our climate system. “Think of the Earth’s temperature as a bell curve,” says Penn State climate scientist Michael Mann. “Climate change is shifting the bell curve toward the hotter end of the temperature scale, making extreme-heat events more likely.” As the temperature rises, ice sheets are melting, seas are rising, hurricanes are getting more intense, rainfall patterns are changing (witness the recent flooding in the Midwest). Drought and flooding inflict tremendous economic damage and create political chaos, but extreme heat is much more likely to kill you directly. The World Health Organization predicts heat stress linked to the climate crisis will cause 38,000 extra deaths a year worldwide between 2030 and 2050. A recent study published in Nature Climate Change found that by 2100, if emissions continue to grow, 74 percent of the world’s population will be exposed to heat waves hot enough to kill. “The more warming you have, the more heat waves you have,” says Michael Wehner, a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. “The more heat waves you have, the more people die. It’s a pretty simple equation.”
.........
Extreme heat is already transforming our world in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Disney executives recently voiced concern that rising temperatures will significantly reduce the number of visits to their parks. In Germany, officials were forced to put a speed limit on the autobahn because of fears the road would buckle from heat. The U.S. military has already incurred as much as $1 billion in costs during the past decade — from lost work, retraining, and medical care — due to the health impacts of heat. The warming of the planet “will affect the Department of Defense’s ability to defend the nation and poses immediate risks to U.S. national security,” a recent DOD report said. Forests and soils are drying out, contributing to explosive and unprecedented wildfires. Habitation zones for plants and animals are changing, forcing them to adapt to a warmer world or die. A U.N. report found that 1 million species are at risk of extinction in the coming decades. Another study by researchers at MIT suggests that rising temperatures and humidity may make much of South Asia, including parts of India and Pakistan, too hot for human existence by the end of the century. As scientist Peter Gleick, co-founder of the Pacific Institute in California, told me, “There is a shocking, unreported, fundamental change coming to the habitability of many parts of the planet, including the USA.”
.................
But the greatest risk to human health may be in areas that are already hot, where temperature increases will strain habitability. In the U.S., the fastest-warming cities are in the Southwest. Las Vegas, El Paso, Tucson, and Phoenix have warmed the most, each by at least 4.3°F since 1970. Globally, many of the hottest cities are in India. In May, a deadly heat wave sent temperatures above 120°F in the north. The desert city of Churu recorded a high of 123°F, nearly breaking India’s record of 123.8°F, set in 2016. There were warnings not to go outside after 11 a.m. Authorities poured water on roads to keep them from melting. A 33-year-old man was reportedly beaten to death in a fight over water. The preliminary death toll in India for this summer’s heat wave is already more than 200, and that number is likely to grow.
How hot will it get? That depends largely on how far and how fast carbon-dioxide levels rise, which depends on how much fossil fuel the world continues to burn. The Paris Climate Agreement (which President Trump pulled the U.S. out of) aims to limit the warming to 3.6°F (2°C). Given the current trajectory of carbon pollution, hitting that target is all but impossible. Unless nations of the world take dramatic action soon, we are headed for a warming of at least 5.4°F (3°C) by the end of the century, making the Earth roughly as warm as it was 3 million years ago during the Pliocene era, long before Homo sapiens came along. “Human beings have literally never lived on a planet as hot as it is today,” says Wehner. A 5.4°F-warmer world would be radically different from the one we know now, with cities swamped by rising seas and epic droughts turning rainforests into deserts. The increased heat alone would kill significant numbers of people. A recent report from the University of Bristol estimated that with 5.4°F of warming, about 5,800 people could die each year in New York due to the heat, 2,500 could die in Los Angeles, and 2,300 in Miami. “The relationship between heat and mortality is clear,” Eunice Lo, a climate scientist at the University of Bristol and the lead author of the report, tells me. “The warmer the world becomes, the more people die.”
...........
The psychological impacts of extreme heat are obvious to anyone who’s ever felt cranky on a hot day. But the impacts go beyond crankiness. When temperatures rise, suicide rates can go up at a pace similar to the impact of economic recessions. Some aspects of higher cognition are impaired. School test scores decline, with one study showing decreases across five measures of cognitive function, including reaction times and working memory.
The link between heat and violence is particularly intriguing. “There is growing evidence of a psychological mechanism that is impacted by heat, although we can’t yet say exactly what that is,” says Solomon Hsiang, a professor of public policy at Berkeley. Some scientists speculate that higher temperatures impact neurotransmitters in the brain, resulting in lower levels of serotonin, which has been shown to lead to aggressive behavior. So rising heat may literally alter the chemistry in our brains. One study showed that police officers were more likely to fire on intruders during training exercises when it was hot. Andrew Shaver, a professor of political science at the University of California, Merced, analyzed data about conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and found that attacks by insurgents involving RPGs and assault rifles increased with higher temperatures, while planned attacks did not. “During conflicts, higher temperatures seem to provoke more impulsive aggression,” Shaver says. One speculative paper projects that by 2099, due to rising heat, the U.S. could see an additional 22,000 murders, 180,000 rapes, 3.5 million assaults, and 3.76 million robberies, burglaries, and acts of larceny.
...............
A recent poll found that two-thirds of Arizonans accept that climate change is happening, but most elected officials in the state, including Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, are hardly climate activists. Arizona is one of the sunniest states in the nation, and yet only 6.5 percent of the state’s electricity comes from solar power. A statewide ballot initiative in 2018 to require 50 percent renewable power by 2030 was soundly defeated, in part because the parent company of Arizona Public Service, the big public utility in the state, spent more than $37 million on false and misleading arguments about how transitioning to renewable power would raise power bills and destroy the Arizona economy.
“We have a large number of elected officials who don’t believe in climate change, period,” says Stacey Champion, a longtime Phoenix energy and climate activist. “How do you get effective, data-driven policy if you have people pushing hard against it because they are batshit crazy, or they are afraid it will spook companies like Nike who want to come here?”
....................
Air conditioning is one of those paradoxical modern technologies that creates just as many problems as it solves. For one thing, it requires a lot of energy, most of which comes from fossil fuels. AC and fans already account for 10 percent of the world’s energy consumption. Globally, the number of air-conditioning units is expected to quadruple by 2050. Even accounting for modest growth in renewable power, the carbon emissions from all this new AC would result in a more than 0.9°F increase in global temperature by the year 2100.
Cheap air conditioning is like crack cocaine for modern civilization, keeping us addicted and putting off serious thinking about more creative (and less fossil-fuel-intensive) solutions. Air conditioning also creates a kind of extreme heat apartheid. If you’re rich, you have a big house with enough air conditioning to chill a martini. And if you are poor, like Leonor Juarez, a 46-year-old single mother whom I met on a recent July afternoon when the temperature was hovering around 115°F, you live in South Phoenix, where sidewalks are dirt and trees are few, and you hope you can squeeze enough money out of your paycheck to run the AC for a few hours on hot summer nights.
On hot days, Juarez’s small apartment feels like a cave. She has heavy purple curtains on the windows to block the sun. “I could not live here without air conditioning,” she tells me. Because she has poor credit, she doesn’t qualify for the usual monthly billing from Salt River Project, her utility. Instead, to pay for electricity and keep her AC running, SRP has given her a card reader that plugs into an outlet that she has to feed like a jukebox to keep the power on. Juarez turns on her AC only a few hours a day — still, her electric bill can run $500 a month during the summer, which is more than she pays for rent. To Juarez, who takes a bus five miles to a laundromat in the middle of the night because washing machines are discounted to 50 cents a load after 1 a.m., $500 is a tremendous amount of money.
She shows me the meter on the card reader: She has $49 worth of credit on it, enough for a few more days of power. And when that runs out? “I am in trouble,” she says bluntly. Juarez, who works as an in-home caretaker for the elderly, says she knows of several people who lived alone and died when they failed to pay their electric bills and tried to live without AC.

The Power of Celebrities' Influence on Politics
Founded in 1996, the “Rock the Vote” campaign made celebrities like Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, and Ozzy Osbourne the public face of voting, in an attempt to exploit popular culture as an incentive for political participation (Cloonan & Street, 1998). This initiative specifically aimed to encourage voting from the 18-29 age demographics, as evidence surrounding youth politics showed that younger generations were less likely to vote than older generations (Mullen, 2014; Cloonan & Street, 1998). Since then, singers and movie stars have continued to promote the importance of voting among their fans and, with the advent of social media and its ability to convey rapid activism, it is now possible to have a simpler transaction of information and share more partisan messages (Kelly, 2020b).
Focusing on the 2020 US Presidential Elections, many celebrities, including pop singer Lizzo, took part in the #RunwaytothePolls campaign. Lizzo’s call to action offered voting resources while encouraging fans to share videos of themselves mailing their ballots or going to the voting polls to the beat of her new song, titled “Vote” (Kelly, 2020a).
instagram
While many celebrities, such as Selena Gomez and Michelle Obama, opted to share a picture on Instagram featuring the ‘I Voted’ sticker, others were more direct. In fact, celebrities like Taylor Swift and Jennifer Aniston did not only encourage their followers to vote but, by openly featuring the names of democratic candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in their photos, were clear on whom they were going to be casting their vote for, urging others to do the same.
The 2020 Election Administration and Voting Survey (EAVS) reported that the 2020 presidential elections were the most voted elections in the past 120 years, with 67.7% of the voting age population casting a vote (Election Assistance Commission, 2020), and an increase of 10% in youth voters’ turnout (Noor, 2020). Additionally, the overall traffic registered on the Vote.org website was at an all-time high after many celebrities, including Kylie Jenner, put the link to register for voting in their Instagram bio.
Throughout the years, marketing research consistently highlighted the power celebrities hold on their target audiences due to their perceived trustworthiness and the role-model figures that they embody (Martín-Santana & Beerli-Palacio, 2013). Although there is no data showing the actual impact celebrities had on US voters, according to Nota Gilbert, Vote.org’s sector of partnerships, “there’s no world in which it’s not a net positive on voter engagement” (Schwartz, 2020). Celebrities can be seen acting as a valuable ally for politicians and as a useful tool for their campaigning and marketing teams, as well as a beacon for young people who are new to navigating political and social issues (Morin, Ivory & Tubbs, 2012; Nisbett & DeWalt, 2016).
The ability to increase the political and social awareness of young voters is a democratic responsibility. Thus, it is imperative for politicians and political campaigning experts to explore the mediums and means most used by younger generations to understand, and subsequently act on, the best strategies to maintain high interest levels and engagement around politics (Nisbett & DeWalt, 2016).

Thriving in an Economic Bubble during Anarchy
5. The Christian Succession – Are the DM Wheels Beginning to Wobble?
Most Americans across our country celebrated Independence Day last weekend. We traveled to Florida for a family event and returned by car on Sunday afternoon. Thinking traffic would be bad we had planned to break the return trip into two legs. But on Sunday traffic was light so we drove all the way through. It was interesting that every time I stopped for gas, when the pump was supposed to print my receipt, all of them were out of paper. America had been on the road.
The Demented Marxists (DM) had a bad week. It was interesting to watch. Here are four questions:
1. The New York City (NYC) Mayor election saw 1 Million voters cast their ballots but the DM’s ended up with more than 1.1M ballots. Oops. The DM’s had to publicly acknowledge that they do not know who won the first round and it will be a few weeks before they can figure it out. Election fraud? Can the DMs get the Republican Senate in Arizona to audit the NYC Mayor election?
2. I have lost count, is the non-infrastructure Infrastructure Deal on or off. Neither Biden knows, but for different reasons. Perhaps Obama has not told them yet. More stimulus into an economy already operating at capacity will simply increase the rate of inflation from high to rampant. Is rampant inflation the DM economic plan?
3. The Momma Bears have the CRT idiots on the run including some of the founders of the CRT movement. As that culture war continues, the DMs have sent in their reserves, the National Education Association (NEA), which voted to (1) resist going back to the classrooms until all students are vaccinated despite the lack of an approval of the vaccines for anyone under the age of 18, and (2) insist on teaching CRT in every public classroom in America. Are we witnessing the end of public education?
4. Remember the Democrats running around yelling about the Republicans’ War on Women? Since Democrats support transgenders winning women’s athletic events and women’s beauty contests – does that qualify as a war on women?
Give our Lord and Savior the credit for the great awakening that is happening as Christians stand firm when Satan is being exposed. Hallelujah. Amen. Here are just a few recent examples:
1. Trump held his second rally, this time in Sarasota, Florida. Another sellout crowd. Biden’s July 4th message received views equal to 25% of the attendees at Trump’s rally. Yet we are supposed to believe that Biden got the most votes in the history of the USA.
2. More governors are sending either police or troops to the USA southern border. My guess is it is a different group of states than sent troops to DC in January – March. Both events highlight failure on the part of the DM’s and displays that states are increasingly acting independent of the Federal government.
3. One of Arizona’s State Senators has called for a national movement to audit all elections in all states. Every nonprofit organization has an annual audit, publicly traded companies get audited, how come it is not standard procedure to audit our elections? Virginia’s Republicans must be hiding under their blankies because they are not discussing an audit.
I highly recommend that you read the book “Unsettled” by Steven E. Koonin. It is the most thorough analysis of Climate Change I have found. Pure FACTS not opinions wrapped in spin. Mr. Koonin is candid in his disdain for the media’s distortion of the facts that have been and are issued on the topic of Climate Change. It is easy to see that the media types are either clueless about science or severely slanted in their view (or both) because they never let the facts stand in the way of making up a good story.
Speaking of Climate Change, watch for rolling electrical brownouts in California and Texas. Is Virginia next to experience a highest cost and lowest reliability electric grid dependent on solar panels and bird slicers called windmills. Perhaps the DM’s think brownouts are a way of fighting their imagined climate change. To me, brownouts mean a lousy government.
Melissa MacKenzie, the Publisher of American Spectator, wrote a personal blog article last week and described her movement away from the “dying social media platforms” to the new ones – Rumble, Signal, Telegram, Speakeasy, Gab, and Parler. She has marked a trend. Join it.
In the economy, here are some critical data points:
1. Two homebuilders have now shared with me that their sales pace has declined each month for the last three months in a row. If you have been reading this blog, you know that in February we forecasted that trend would occur and explained the reason why it is happening – higher mortgage rates.
2. Thanks to the Biden the USA is no longer energy independent but again subject to the whims of OPEC which has raised the price of oil to more than $75 per barrel and headed to $100 a barrel. Get ready for $4 gas. That adds a higher cost of energy into the DMs economic toxic mix. Higher interest rates, higher energy prices, higher inflation, capped off with higher taxes … anyone one of them equals a recession.
3. The report of 850,000 jobs in June reflects the states that stopped paying folks not to work so they found jobs. While that is significant, the real significance is its impact on The Fed. The Fed meets the end of this month and then the end of September. By the end of September, the pressure on the Fed to reduce stimulus will be so high they will at least announce when they will begin to taper their Quantitative Easing (QE), the term for The Fed buying 10-year Treasuries and mortgages to reduce mortgage interest rates to stimulate the real estate market. When The Fed announces that they will begin to taper QE, the 10-year Treasuries and therefore mortgage interest rates will both increase and burst the real estate bubble.
4. Biden fired the CEO of FNMA, the quasi-government mortgage entity. Biden stated that he will appoint someone who will lower the standards for mortgage loans so that more folks can buy homes. If making bad loans on houses sounds familiar, Billy Clinton did the same in 1998 and the result was the financial crisis that created The Great Recession. Why do the DM’s want another financial crisis?
The Fed now owns such a large percentage of the Treasury market that it causes mixed signals in those markets. Do not be fooled. As The Fed tapers QE, interest rates will rise and the economy will slow. The higher interest rates will impact a matrix of forces but the result is simple to forecast - the ripple effects cause a brutal recession.
Counting the one that is coming in 2022, during my career I will have been through seven recessions caused by one of the following – (1) increased energy prices, (2) interest rates being raised to combat inflation, and (3) increased taxes. The recession coming next year will be the result of a combination of all three of those forces in combination with stagflation. Ugly.
177 days into the DM’s Coup, eventually, we will know all the facts. Pray for the patriot attorney in Antrim County, Michigan who called for the Secretary of State to resign or be impeached and the election to be De-Certified. Another county in Michigan has voted to audit its election. Interesting that the Michigan GOP is reported to have issued a statement that no fraud occurred in the election. The data suggest the opposite is correct, so one has to wonder who is owned by whom.
Keep watching the Arizona Audit. The Secretary of State in Georgia decided to investigate the chain of custody of some of the mail in ballots to CYA. As the election audits spread and the terabytes of information from Mr. Dong bubble, you can smell the fear of the DMs.
A great piece of land remains The Best investment long term. Capitalism builds wealth, Marxism/Socialism consumes it in self destruction. Pray for a return to honest and audited elections in the USA. God is in control. Men make plans, but God ALWAYS wins.
“And not only that, but we boast of our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”
(Romans 5:3-5) New Revised Standard Version, Oxford University Press)

Fast Internet Proxy Service at Good Price in America Iron proxy
An Intermediary Worker has an enormous heap of different uses and they work from various perspectives. In this article, I will explain the different habits by which an Intermediary Worker can work and the different ways they can be used. Avail Best Paid Proxy Service In US. We give the quickest and most dependable intermediary benefits that have highlights like bursting speeds, solid associations, limitless data transfer capacity, and that's only the tip of the iceberg.
The three exceptional ways that these go-betweens work is according to the accompanying:
An Opposite Intermediary goes probably as a representative between the web and the starting laborers helping the source laborers. It causes the client-side objections to feel that the aggregate of the sales are coming from itself when in all honesty they are coming from one or various laborers and all guided through it. They are implied as an opposite go-between's since it is helping the connected laborers instead of the connected clients.
Pivot delegates have various inclinations including go probably as an application fire divider to alleviate attacks from malware, etc., it can go probably as a store balancer by spreading information to different specialists, it can pack content thusly redesigning execution, they can hide the presence of the beginning stage laborers.
Open Intermediary (Otherwise known as Straightforward Intermediary) is a saving laborer that is accessible by any web customer. There are immense heaps of open delegates in presence since they are the most notable and they are by and large used to cover your IP address. Right when someone is using an open delegate, they become puzzling, and subsequently they are standard with people expecting to do unlawful things as it is more determinedly for them to get caught.
The chief preferred position of open middle person laborers is the mystery, there are a few disadvantages too as there is a higher peril of malware infection, they can run deferred similar number of people are apparently endeavoring to download colossal report anyway them.
A Forward Intermediary (standard sort) reliably stores all requesting. It works by tuning in for the client's requests for the organization to an alternate port. After the specialist gets the requesting and gets the substance it will store a saved copy of the substance on the laborer and a short time later forward the substance on. If a comparable page is, by then referenced again by anyone then it will serve the held copy rather than sending another requesting. This can in a general sense lessen page load time as needs be making it generously more successful.
As of now you know the three rule ways middle people work you may get a kick out of the opportunity to know the sum of the different assortments of them and manners by which they can benefit you.
Free web delegates: These are locales that have a mediator organization introduced in them so you essentially go to the page and thereafter surf the web from their program. This will overcome the whole of the web traffic through their program and make you baffling yet you ought to in like manner be forewarned about their use. By using this free elective, you are setting the total of your trust in the site you are encountering, they can observe all that you are doing comparably however much a software engineer when you don't use one. Your traffic isn't mixed either so your web access provider (ISP) can at present notice all that you are doing and they are generally speaking extremely moderate. Ironproxy.com is a prestigious stage to get Fast Web Intermediary Administration In USA. We give the speediest and most solid intermediary administrations.
Free Intermediary Rundown: These are a great deal like the Free Web Intermediary beside that you don't use an embedded program. You check the net for the once-over and subsequently you organize your program to use the delegate address and port number. This will cause it to appear to be like your IP address is the IP of the Intermediary address and is fairly in a manner that is superior to the free web one despite the fact that they are furthermore moderate and incredibly slanted to breaking once in a while. Since they consistently break, they are not that supportive for downloading colossal records and spilling as you will not finish it as a general rule. There are moreover paid transformations of mediator records that are extraordinarily improved as less people are using them yet they break amazingly.

Understanding Europe’s big push to rewrite the digital rulebook
European Union lawmakers have set out the biggest update of digital regulations for around two decades — likening it to the introduction of traffic lights to highways to bring order to the chaos wrought by increased mobility. Just switch cars for packets of data.
The proposals for a Digital Services Act (DSA) to standardize safety rules for online business, and a Digital Markets Act (DMA), which will put limits on tech giants aimed at boosting competition in the digital markets they dominate, are intended to shape the future of online business for the next two decades — both in Europe and beyond.
The bloc is far ahead of the U.S. on internet regulation. So while the tech giants of today are (mostly) made in the USA, rules that determine how they can and can’t operate in the future are being shaped in Brussels.
What will come faster, a U.S. breakup of a tech empire or effective enforcement of EU rules on internet gatekeepers is an interesting question to ponder.
The latter part of this year has seen Ursula von der Leyen’s European Commission, which took up its five-mandate last December, unleash a flotilla of digital proposals — and tease more coming in 2021. The Commission has proposed a Data Governance Act to encourage reuse of industrial (and other) data, with another data regulation and rules on political ads transparency proposal slated as coming next year. European-flavored guardrails for use of AI will also be presented next year.
But it’s the DSA and DMA that are core to understanding how the EU executive body hopes to reshape internet business practices to increase accountability and fairness — and in so doing promote the region’s interests for years to come.
These are themes being seen elsewhere in the world at a national level. The U.K., for example, is coming with an “Online Safety Bill” next year in response to public concern about the societal impacts of big tech. While rising interest in tech antitrust has led to Google and Facebook facing charges of abusive business practices on home turf.
What will come faster, a U.S. breakup of a tech empire or effective enforcement of EU rules on internet gatekeepers is an interesting question to ponder. Both are now live possibilities — so entrepreneurs can dare to dream of a different, freer and fairer digital playground. One that’s not ruled over by a handful of abusive giants. Though we’re certainly not there yet.
Texas leads ten states in lawsuit over Google’s ad business
With the DSA and DMA the EU is proposing an e-commerce and digital markets framework that, once adopted, will apply for its 27 Member States — and the ~445 million people who live there — exerting both a sizable regional pull and seeking to punch up and out at global internet giants.
While there are many challenges ahead to turn the planned framework into pan-EU law, it looks a savvy move by the Commission to separate the DSA and DMA — making it harder for big tech to co-opt the wider industry to lobby against measures that will only affect them in the 160+ pages of proposed legislation now on the table.
It’s also notable that the DSA contains a sliding scale of requirements, with audits, risk assessments and the deepest algorithmic accountability provisions reserved for larger players.
Tech sovereignty — by scaling up Europe’s tech capacity and businesses — is a strategic priority for the Commission. And rule-setting is a key part of how it intends to get there — building on data protection rules that have already been updated, with the GDPR being applied from 2018.
Though what the two new major policy packages will mean for tech companies, startup-sized or market-dominating, won’t be clear for months — or even years. The DSA and DMA have to go through the EU’s typically bruising co-legislative process, looping in representatives of Member States’ governments and directly elected MEPs in the European parliament (which often are coming at the process with different policy priorities and agendas).
The draft presented this month is thus a starting point. Plenty could shift — or even change radically — through the coming debates and amendments. Which means the lobbying starts in earnest now. The coming months will be crucial to determining who will be the future winners and losers under the new regime so startups will need to work hard to make their voices heard.
While tech giants have been pouring increasing amounts of money into Brussels “whispering” for years, the EU is keen to champion homegrown tech — and most of big tech isn’t that.
A fight is almost certainly brewing to influence the world’s most ambitious digital rulebook — including in key areas like the surveillance-based adtech business models that currently dominate the web (to the detriment of individual rights and pro-privacy innovation). So for those dreaming of a better web there’s plenty to play for.
Early responses to the DSA and DMA show the two warring sides, with U.S.-based tech lobbies blasting the plan to expand internet regulation as “anti-innovation” (and anti-U.S.), while EU rights groups are making positive noises over the draft — albeit, with an ambition to go further and ensure stronger protections for web users.
On the startup side, there’s early relief that key tenets of the EU’s existing e-commerce framework look set to remain untouched, mingled with concern that plans to rein in tech giants may have knock-on impacts — such as on startup exits (and valuations). European founders, whose ability to scale is being directly throttled by big tech’s market muscle, have other reasons to be cheerful about the direction of policy travel.
In short, major shifts are coming and businesses and entrepreneurs would do well to prepare for changing requirements — and to seize new opportunities.
Act now before Google kills us, 135-strong coalition of startups warns EU antitrust chief
Read on for a breakdown of the key aims and requirements of the DSA and the DMA, and additional discussion on how the policy plan could shape the future of the startup business.
Digital Services Act
The DSA aims to standardize rules for digital services that act as intermediaries by connecting consumers to goods, services and content. It will apply to various types of digital services, including network infrastructure providers (like ISPs); hosting services (like cloud storage providers); and online platforms (like social media and marketplaces) — applying to all that offer services in the EU, regardless of where they’re based.
The existing EU e-Commerce Directive was adopted in the year 2000 so revisiting it to see if core principles are still fit for purpose is important. And the Commission has essentially decided that they are. But it also wants to improve consumer protections and dial up transparency and accountability on services businesses by setting new due diligence obligations — responding to a smorgasbord of concerns around the impact of what’s now being hawked and monetized online (whether hateful content or dangerous/illegal products).
Some EU Member States have also been drafting their own laws (in areas like hate speech) that threatens regulatory fragmentation of the bloc’s single market, giving lawmakers added impetus to come with harmonized pan-EU rules (hence the DSA being a regulation, not a directive).
The package will introduce obligations aimed at setting rules for how internet businesses respond to illegal stuff (content, services, goods and so on) — including standardized notice and response procedures for swiftly tackling illegal content (an areas that’s been managed by a voluntary EU code of conduct on illegal hate speech up til now); and a “Know Your Customer” principle for online marketplaces (already a familiar feature in more heavily regulated sectors like fintech) that’s aimed at making it harder for sellers of illegal products to simply respawn within a marketplace under a new name.
There’s also a big push around transparency obligations — with requirements in the proposal for platforms to provide “meaningful” criteria used to target ads (Article 24); and explain the “main parameters” of recommender algorithms (Article 29), as well as requirements to foreground user controls (including at least one “nonprofiling” option).
Here the overarching aim is to increase accountability by ensuring European users can get the information needed to be able to exercise their rights.

Fast Internet Proxy Service In USA At Best Price | Iron Proxy
A Proxy Server has a huge load of various uses and they work from multiple points of view. In this article, I will clarify the various manners by which a Proxy Server can work and the various ways they can be utilized. Avail Best Paid Proxy Service In US. We provide the fastest and most reliable proxy services that have features such as blazing speeds, reliable connections, unlimited bandwidth, and more.
The three unique ways that these intermediaries work is as per the following:
A Reverse Proxy goes about as a delegate between the web and the beginning workers helping the source workers. It makes the customer side destinations feel that the entirety of the solicitations are coming from itself when truth be told they are coming from one or numerous different workers and all steered through it. They are alluded to as a converse intermediary's since it is helping the related workers rather than the related customers.
Turn around intermediaries have numerous preferences including go about as an application fire divider to relieve assaults from malware and so forth, it can go about as a heap balancer by disseminating data to various workers, it can pack content in this manner upgrading execution, they can conceal the presence of the starting point workers.
Open Proxy (AKA Transparent Proxy) is a reserving worker that is available by any web client. There are huge loads of open intermediaries in presence since they are the most well-known and they are generally used to cover your IP address. At the point when somebody is utilizing an open intermediary, they become mysterious, and hence they are mainstream with individuals needing to do unlawful things as it is more diligently for them to get captured.
The principal advantage of open intermediary workers is the secrecy, there are some downsides too as there is a higher danger of malware disease, they can run delayed the same number of individuals are presumably attempting to download enormous document however them.
A Forward Proxy (ordinary sort) consistently stores all solicitations. It works by tuning in for the customer's demands for the network to a different port. After the worker gets the solicitation and gets the substance it will store a reserved duplicate of the substance on the worker and afterward forward the substance on. On the off chance that a similar page is, at that point mentioned again by anybody then it will serve the reserved duplicate as opposed to sending another solicitation. This can fundamentally diminish page load time accordingly making it substantially more effective.
Presently you know the three principle ways intermediaries work you may get a kick out of the chance to know the entirety of the various varieties of them and ways in which they can profit you.
Free web intermediaries: These are sites that have an intermediary administration installed in them so you simply go to the webpage and afterward surf the web from their program. This will defeat the entirety of the web traffic through their program and make you mysterious yet you should likewise be cautioned about their utilization. By utilizing this free elective you are setting the entirety of your trust in the site you are experiencing, they can watch all that you are doing similarly as much as a programmer when you don't utilize one. Your traffic isn't scrambled either so your web access supplier (ISP) can at present observe all that you are doing and they are as a rule very moderate. Ironproxy.com is a renowned platform to get Fast Internet Proxy Service In USA. We provide the quickest and most reliable proxy services.
Free Proxy List: These are a lot like the Free Web Proxy aside from that you don't utilize an inserted program. You scan the net for the rundown and afterward you arrange your program to utilize the intermediary address and port number. This will make it seem as though your IP address is the IP of the Proxy address and is somewhat in a way that is better than the free web one even though they are additionally moderate and extremely inclined to breaking now and again. Since they regularly break they are not that helpful for downloading enormous records and spilling as you won't complete it more often than not. There are additionally paid adaptations of intermediary records that are greatly improved as fewer individuals are utilizing them yet they break shockingly.

Around the Block #10: “ETH killers” and new chains
The landscape of smart contract platforms and emerging competitors vying to challenge Ethereum’s dominance
Coinbase Around the Block sheds light on key issues in the crypto space. In this edition, Ryan Yi and Justin Mart explore the landscape of smart contract platforms and the emerging competitors vying to challenge Ethereum’s dominance within this space.
Introduction
Dapps are decentralized applications which are enabled by smart contracts, self-executing agreements that remove the need for a centralized intermediary. Dapps have the potential to cover a universe of use-cases, including financial services (DeFi), gaming, social media, and many others. Over time, Dapps can be collectively managed by a community; operate entirely according to their code rules; and provide a level of global inclusion, censorship resistance, and eventual efficiency not possible in traditional web apps. Because a Dapp provides transparency into user behavior and usage, it can also share its monetization with users of the product in an automated fashion, usually by issuing its own digital asset that is used in operating the underlying application itself. It’s no wonder that the “Utility Phase” of the crypto-economy, where a thousand Dapps can bloom, is such a tantalizing possibility.
In order for Dapps to work seamlessly, they require scalable smart-contract blockchains as the underlying technology platform. Smart-contract capable blockchains provide a high-degree of decentralization guarantees, so that they can serve “as a cohesive digital infrastructure that can be relied upon, with clear guarantees of availability, to maintain a consistent and truthful view of… critical data,” as described by one expert.
This is the market that Ethereum and other smart-contract blockchains are targeting. They are effectively developer platforms, selling their technology stack and their level of decentralization (“economic security guarantees”) to Dapp developers. In turn, as more Dapps coalesce to a specific platform, more economic activity flows through the base layer (helping set asset prices and transaction fees via protocol operation), providing greater security guarantees. Similar to how mobile OS operates as a common operating layer that has consolidated to iOS and Android, there are similar network effects at play currently in crypto protocols, where the leading platforms could generate critical mass and network effects leading to further growth.
It’s no wonder that there is strong competition among smart-contract enabled blockchains, with several new entrants poised to come to market. So what is the current state of the ecosystem, and how can we evaluate different blockchains moving forward?
Ethereum’s first mover advantage
Ethereum has a firm and clear first mover advantage among the smart contract platforms. It is not only the highest in terms of the network value at $65B, but also dwarfs the competition in several key factors:
Developer Activity / Traction: The majority of blockchain applications today live on Ethereum. ERC-20 (Ethereum) is by far the most adopted standard for newly issued crypto-assets.
Distribution / Integration: Other third-party services also lean heavily to support ETH, including developer tools, wallets, cloud infrastructure, exchange integrations, and more. For example, the two largest stablecoins by issuance (USDT and USDC) live mostly on Ethereum.
# of Users: The number of active addresses continues to grow substantially.
Network Value / Security: Owing to their lead in users and traction, Ethereum poses a high cost of corrupting the chain. Ethereum Classic, the chain from which Ethereum forked, by comparison has been 51% attacked multiple times.
Above all, Ethereum has demonstrated the power of open-source development, where Dapps are able to interact with each other. An analogy here is traditional software development, where a developer might use multiple open-source libraries to code one’s application. Similarly, an Ethereum developer can utilize different parts of the Ethereum-compatible technology “stack,” which is interoperable and specializes in particular functions, to create cohesive applications. Think of Ethereum Dapps as lego bricks. Building on top and alongside is encouraged, and has led to a vibrant developer ecosystem that will be very challenging for challengers to disrupt.
Take catnip.exchange for example, a prediction market on the 2020 USA Presidential Election. Catnip is built on the following layers:
Augur: Augur is an Ethereum-based prediction market platform. Augur is used to create the Presidential Election outcome market (Trump outcome, Biden outcome).
ERC-20 Standard: Ethereum code that turns the underlying prediction market outcomes into financial shares, represented as Ethereum-native tokens.
Balancer: Balancer is an Ethereum-based protocol that allows the creation of custom weighted financial portfolios — similar to an ETF. In this case, Balancer is used to create a weighted portfolio composed of the ERC-20 tokens described in (2) above. (50% USD, 25% Trump outcome, 25% Biden outcome.)
Catnip.Exchange: a front-end UX that allows users to seamless trade in and out of the Balancer market.
How can alternative chains compete with Ethereum?
Ethereum has a significant lead in the market, owing largely to their strong early traction among developers and Dapps. But we are now seeing new alternative platforms looking to gain market share.
Each new platform will try to compete along the following dimensions:
Developer Experience, Tooling, & Programmability: How easy will it be for developers to build and deploy Dapps?
Scaling / UX: How many transactions can be settled each minute? How does this scalability affect decentralization and security guarantees?
Business Development: New platforms need application adoption. How can each platform help Dapps gain critical product partnerships or distribution?
Infrastructure: How reliant is the base blockchain? Will it be simple for Dapp developers to tap into node support, staking services, and other infra requirements? What sort of stablecoins and base financial primitives will be available?
Balance Sheet: How much capital can the base blockchain development team tap into in order to accomplish the above goals? Some of these projects raised significant capital from token sales, and can pay for growth and traction.
The success case for the competition will depend largely on two fronts. How well Ethereum is satisfying current developer needs, and how difficult it would be for developers to switch to a new environment. But to be clear, if Ethereum can sufficiently scale throughput and continue to improve developer experience, it will be challenging for any other competitive platform to emerge at a scale that would threaten Ethereum.
Appropriately, developer adoption is a key metric to track. What platforms are new Dapps building on top of, and why? Today, Ethereum dominates developer market share, but we see early traction in some other platforms.

Closing thoughts
Today, there are benefits to building on Ethereum. For one, Ethereum has proven to be comparatively secure so far, possesses a robust developer tooling and ecosystem, and brings the largest user base. An application on Ethereum does not have to worry about bootstrapping its own network from the bottom-up, and can rely on the network effects of Ethereum. For these reasons, building on Ethereum helps remove some of the risk variables for the developer.
At the same time, Ethereum has drawbacks. One is scaling — when one application has a lot of transaction volume, it also brings up the cost of interacting with other applications on the network, creating a “traffic jam” on the network for all the other applications on Ethereum. Another is control and flexibility — for example, when Ethereum underwent the equivalent of a “software update,” portions of the contract code of an Ethereum-based application, the Aragon Project, became obsolete.
Developers must weigh these benefits and drawbacks when selecting a chain on which to build their applications.
New technology is enabling developers greater customization, flexibility, and control — yet it is still early. Developers can set up blockchains with their own validator security and customize the chain based on their application needs. Some of the front-runners in this category are Cosmos (via the Tendermint protocol) and Polkadot (via Substrate). Applications are created as their own blockchains using these open-source technologies and set their own rules. In fact, the above-mentioned Aragon effectively migrated from Ethereum to Cosmos.
Our view is that ultimately it is a question of whether applications need to “live” within the same blockchain environments. Eventually, we foresee that technologies will allow applications to interact with each other, regardless of the underlying chain. So it may ultimately be a decision whether it makes sense to (1) build one’s own chain, get traction, and then interoperate with other applications — or (2) the alternative being to build and interact with other applications within the same environment to achieve that traction.

Quick Hits: commentary on notable news
Ethereum Phase 0 Roll-Out
After years of R&D, the Ethereum 2.0 deposit contract launched and met the minimum requirements of staked $ETH to progress to the next phase of launch. Currently, more than 1M $ETH has been staked.
The launch of the beacon chain, the backbone of the ETH2 vision, is the beginning of a multi-year phase. The industry expects another 1~2 years for the next phases to complete, at which point the staked $ETH can be unlocked. This is a significant milestone in the lifecycle of the $ETH asset and emerges as potentially the most important proof-of-stake opportunity for the near-term future.
While the ETH2 vision may take some years to fully come to fruition, the current iteration of Ethereum and its scaling solutions will likely be the near-term solution for existing applications — and will eventually integrate into a functioning ETH2. Because of this multi-year phase, there is a window for the new smart contract blockchains (described above) to gain developer mindshare and user traction. It will be interesting to see how Ethereum will fare from a fundamentals perspective during such time as it transitions to its new technology stack.

21 Questions To Ask A Prospective SEO Agency (End)
11. How do you store passwords? Good Answer: “You can give us admin access to anything - that way we don’t need your passwords. For any passwords we do store, we use LastPass”
Bad Answer: “I just use them once and let the browser remember”
Working with an SEO company invariably means that you’ll end up sharing some confidential data with them. Asking how they plan to protect that data ensures you have an understanding of how much they care about the details.
The correct answer to the storing passwords question is something like LastPass or another secure online program.
The wrong answer is on a spreadsheet or password protected hard drive, because spreadsheets can get hacked and hard drives can get stolen.
It could cause seriously bad damage to your business’s reputation if your SEO company inadvertently let your confidential data out into the world through lax security procedures.
12. Do you manage PPC (Pay Per Click)? Good Answer: “Sometimes - getting the balance right between the budget for SEO and PPC can be a difficulty”
Bad Answer: “Yes! Google just bought us all jet-skis… but don’t worry, it won’t cloud our judgement”
Taking money for paid clicks while being paid for activity which improves a clients’ organic search rankings is a tough balance. We’ve never been able to make it sit comfortably, so Noisy Little Monkey avoids the problem altogether and partners with one of the country's most respected PPC agencies. Keeps us all focused!
However, If your new SEO agency does manage PPC, you need to know how they will wean you off spending on Google AdWords as your organic traffic grows.
Let’s say you spend £3,000 a month on AdWords - you’ll see huge results. But because it’s an auction (you bid on the price you’re willing to pay per click) - bidding will inevitably go up and eventually you’ll have to spend more money to get the same amount of website visitors. You might initially get thousands of visitors, but that will dwindle away to nothing unless you start spending even more on PPC.
With SEO it’s the other way round. You might not see many results organically to begin with, but they should continue to rise once they get started.
It’s very tempting to not invest in this foundational period of SEO because the results aren’t as good as PPC to begin with, but if you want that long-term return on investment you’ve got to do it. Get it right and in a year or so, you won’t pay Google as much and for very little money you’ll get loads of “free” traffic from organic search results.
13. How do you choose the keywords? Good Answer: “First we think about your potential customer …”
Bad Answer: “Google AdWords Keyword Planner and Keyword Shitter 2”
Primarily the answers you want to hear should include the word ‘people’ and your ‘buyer personas’, rather than them talking solely about keyword planning tools. As good as those tools are (and to be honest, Keyword Shitter 2 is a bit of a loose cannon), they’re only tools.
A good SEO thinks about who your potential customers are and what they’re typing into Google. Then, once they’ve thought about those phrases, a great SEO looks for the “search terms” (keywords strung together which become phrases typed into Google) where your website can beat the competition and get some decent visibility on Google.
A poor SEO using just keyword suggestion tools and little or no imagination will likely recommend building content clusters around search terms that have no real involvement in your user’s buying process.
Typically, if your SEO doesn’t talk about buyer personas or potential customers, they’re not going to be very commercially aware.
14. How do you do link building? Good Answer: “We don’t do link building. Link building is bad.”
Bad Answer: “We’ve got this amazing system that keeps us one step ahead of Google”
The best answer is that your SEO company will work with you to create amazing content and then outreach to relevant people in the sector to get them to read it. If the content is wonderful, it will naturally acquire links because people love to share useful, unique resources.
If your SEO agency tells you that for £500 they can get you 500 links then run for the hills! Spammy link building is a terrible strategy and your website will almost certainly suffer a penalty from Google at some point. You will lose face and possibly your ability to pay the mortgage,
15. How much involvement would you want in the CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation)? Good Answer: “If we can, we’d love to be involved - sometimes the results for the client are quicker and better than simply driving more web visitors”
Bad Answer: “We’re all about the traffic, baby.”
Let’s say you’re getting 100 visitors a day to your website right now, and you get one order per day - that’s a 1% conversion rate.
It might cost you £1,000 of SEO to get 200 visitors to your website, but before you spend your budget it might be worth checking if there’s anything you can to do improve the user journey on your website.
Sometimes a task as simple as moving and simplifying a form can double a conversion rate. Which in our example is now a conversion rate of 2%. That’s 2 orders per day.
Which means that for every 100 visitors you now get two orders and it didn’t cost you a penny on SEO.
Before you dive in and spend loads on growing traffic, the best SEOs should suggest ways in which you can improve conversion rates with the traffic you already receive.
16. Assuming there is an ongoing relationship, how often will we meet? Good Answer: “It would be good to meet once a quarter… speak on the phone weekly”
Bad Answer: “We don’t need to meet - this is the internet!”
Meeting with a geeky SEO bod every week is a bit too much for most of us and your SEO won’t enjoy it too much either.
A quick catch up call every week, a conference call for an hour every month to discuss how things are going, and then a quarterly strategy meeting is about where you want to be.
17. WHAT ABOUT BING?? Good Answer: “Well, it gets about 20% of search traffic so we don’t ignore it but we primarily make your website work on Google”
Bad Answer: “Bing, Yahoo, Dogpile, Altavista, Hotbot - we do all the SEOs”
In truth, sometimes it’s better to focus on Bing - but it’s quite rare.
18. What is your experience in multi-lingual SEO? Good Answer: “We have offices in <cities where you also have offices>”
Bad Answer: “Why bother? The international language of trade is English”
When you’re engaging a company to help with multi-lingual SEO you should be looking for an agency with offices in the territories where you wish to target because they’re much more likely to understand the cultural differences, in addition to the linguistic ones. “Mother tongue nationals”, as they’re called in translation circles, also know what idioms work in their native language and which will end up as confusing word mangles.
Also - anyone who believes that because the international language of trade is English they have the right to be so impolite as to not bother to learn the language of their potential customer probably voted UKIP in the last election. As such they are the personification of evil and should be avoided at all costs.
19. What conferences do you attend? Good Answer: “BrightonSEO and Digital Gaggle and we host a local meet up for marketers”
Bad Answer: “We don’t bother - we never learn anything new”
You want to hear names like Digital Gaggle, BrightonSEO, SearchLove, SMX London and maybe Inbound or MozCon if they fly to the USA occasionally. These kinds of events are about improving knowledge. You want a partner in SEO that won’t be resting on their laurels about something that worked yesterday - they should challenge themselves and their team to discover what might work tomorrow.
Cartoon character having a book of knowledge pushed into his brain
20. What websites do you use for inspiration? Good Answer: “Loads! Pretty much daily I check Search Engine Land, weekly I’m looking at the wonderful Noisy Little Monkey blog… I’ll send you a list.”
Bad Answer: “We don’t have time, and anyway - we rarely learn anything new”
Positive answers would be sites like the Noisy Little Monkey blog, HubSpot, Kissmetrics, Moz, Search Engine Land, Search Engine Watch, and Bill Slawski’s excellent SEO By The Sea. These kinds of websites give great SEO advice and are forward thinking.
If your SEO is looking at things which are a bit more ‘beginner’, or they start talking about closed groups or forums that they’re in to discuss black-hat SEO techniques that only the cool kids know, you should avoid at all costs..
21. How often do you get it wrong and how do you deal with that? Good Answer: “Rarely but it’s not something we shy away from - we grasp the nettle and put things right.”
Bad Answer: “Uh, we never get it wrong. Why all these questions? Who even are you?”
This is a good test of their honesty because if they say that they never get it wrong then they’re either angels or they’re lying. Check for wings at this point.
By asking them how they deal with it, you’ll learn a lot about their business culture. If they stammer and say something like “oh, we, uh, gave them 3 months of free stuff” it probably means they didn’t actually deal with it like that.
This answer should be about conversations because SEO isn’t even a science, let alone an an exact one and occasionally things go wrong. Sometimes as SEOs we need to have hard conversations with clients.
Any SEO agency should be able to address that question without getting scared, angry or defensive. If they’re defensive at just the question, imagine what they’d be like when something things don’t go exactly as planned.
How to ask these questions Finally, remember to try keeping these questions to ask seo agency open. How, why, where, what, when, who… questions that can’t be answered with a yes / no answer. It keeps it conversational and you’ll learn a lot more about the SEO companies you’re interviewing.
Partnering with the right agency is so important, not just for you but for the agency themselves. Something like SEO is rarely going to be cheap or fast, so getting on with your agency and having mutual respect for each other’s work is vital to ensure your long term partnership is one that delivers a win/win.

TRON DApp Recommendation _ The hottest in the world! What is the TRON behind the Dapp that everyone is playing?
Rising within the rough period of blockchain and standing in the current industry, among the largest community chains within China, the growth of TRON provides always attracted the eye of several people in the home and abroad. This article is here to solution the wave. What exactly is TRON. In March 2014, Ruibo, the predecessor of the TRON Foundation, was established in Beijing. In those days, Ruibo was almost China's first Web technology company focusing on the blockchain sector. It is also this season that Vitalik Buterin (Vitalik Buterin) on the far side of the ocean is major the increase of Ethereum. After three years of development and accumulation, the TRON Foundation was established in Singapore in July 2017. TRON after that completed the open source of the TRON contract in December, and a tale about TRON's assault will be staged.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0fbdac7f06151cf8cc70748f1e3f2cb2/2a1b089108a08a1c-8a/s540x810/4279b33d33e61116794121d7150fe6adba9fe60c.jpg)
Goal and mission The ultimate goal of TRON would be to achieve "re-decentralize the web "Basically, TRON needs to create an underlying operating system so that existing apps can perform the decentralized operations they would like to full, and get this to centralized entire world dominated by the web more free.
As the world's biggest blockchain decentralized application operating system, TRON has high throughput, scalability, and high reliability Three features. Its high throughput is attained by enhancing the TPS (referring to the amount of transactions that can be processed in 1 second) in TRON, and the practicality of on a daily basis use provides exceeded Bitcoin and Ethereum. Predicated on good scalability and efficient smart contracts, applications can be deployed within more ways within TRON, that may support numerous designers and customers. TRON also has a far more reliable system structure, user possessions, and intrinsic value, and An increased amount of decentralized consensus provides led to an improved reward distribution system. If the blockchain may be the next period of the web, after that TRON is equivalent to a shuttle tunnel between the Internet entire world and the blockchain entire world. The intersection between the present and the near future will be completed here. Crazy development of 2018 2018 was per year of rapid growth for TRON. The mainnet general public chain was launched on May 31, and the mainnet token migration had been understood on June 25. TRON completely broke away from the identification of the Ethereum ERC20 token and completed the first independence in the annals of TRON.
