The 2000 year or more old traditional Paithani Sarees remain the same exclusive and counted even today. This rich craft of Aurangabad, Maharashtra, is a magical creation on pure silk fabric with pure silver dipped zari. These sarees are internationally acclaimed for their exquisite hand-weaving, and splendid motifs & designs.

 The rich looks of Paithani Sarees are both extremely artistic and high-priced. But, due to the fineness of the fabric and intricacy of the weaving craftsmanship, these sarees are highly valued possession of Indian women.

 Classification of Paithani Sarees

 These rich Paithani Sarees can be classified according to three major criteria – Weaving Pattern, Motifs & Colour.

 1. Based on the weaving pattern, Paithani sarees are divided as –

 ·Kadiyal Paithani, where borders in both sides are of same colour but the wrap & weft include two different colours across the body

 ·Ekdhoti Paithani, where two different colours are used in both border and body and the saree has simple motifs in the body with Narali border

 2.    Based on the motifs, we can divide Paithani sarees in another three types –

 · Traditional Peacock motif weaving in pallu with square border and exclusive buti all over the body. This type of Paithani Sarees usually include the most expensive range

 Parrot or Muniya is another very traditional motif used mainly in the borders of the Paithani Sarees

 Next is the Ajanta, Ellora cave sculpture and Buddhist art influenced Lotus and flowering vine used in borders

 3.    Now, based on colours, we can classify Paithani sarees as –

 Shiroda, which display a pure White weaving mastery

 Raghu that predominantly showcase a Parrot Green colour

 Kalichandrakala is the one with splendid Black body with Red border

 Other than these major variations of Paithani Sarees, there are lots of variations available.

 Types of Silk Fabrics Used In Paithani Sarees

 You can see the variation in the types of pure silk fabrics used in weaving Paithani sarees. The main types of silk varieties include -

 Charkha – this is the widely used silk variation, which is a bit cheaper but the texture is uneven and looks a little dull.

 Ciddle Gatta – this variation is moderately expensive and has thin, smooth and shiny texture and feel.

 China Silk – this is the real expensive one with the finest quality but used rarely.Any of these silk fabrics are usually collected from Bangalore.

 Use of Different Zari in Weaving

 The weavers lean towards the shiny silver zari from Surat for weaving Paithani sarees more commercially. In exceptional cases,  the weavers avail golden zari from Surat and Yeola, which make the sarees look even more esteemed and also add more to its already high price.

 The Bottom-line

 Authentic Paithani Sarees are now more reasonable than before. But, considering the purity of fabric, zari, and the intricate weaving patterns, the saree is quite heavy and worn for particular occasions like weddings, festivals, grand parties only.
