This show highlights the paintings of local artist Neil Johnston as part of the Gallery 9 TractorWorks Artist in Residency 2023-24. Combin­ing resin layers, collaged paper, letterforms, landscape views, GPS data, maps, and more, Johnston experiments with themes of time, memory, space, and place. Drawing often on his experience with letterforms, scale, and bold imagery, his paintings lead the viewer through many real and un-real landscapes and psychological spaces.

Always focused on his local surroundings, Welton has developed a series of paintings reflecting his love of inner-city architectural icons. He was recently awarded a Minnesota Artist Initiative Grant and painted vintage signage from all Minnesota regions and wrote of their significance to each community.

"Passages"

The art of JuliAnne Jonker at Gallery 1 TractorWorks

JuliAnne Jonker is a renowned, award-winning fine artist and photographer. The exhibit is up now through May 4, 2024

The engaging paintings and giclee’s in “Passages” encompass a range of styles, from abstract to semi-abstract and realism, all centered around nature celebrating the spiritual connection between beings and our existence within creation. She was classically trained, yet she exudes a contemporary energy in her work making it current. Her passion lies with texture, landscape, and rich color as complimentary elements. With multiple layers of oil, encaustic and wax, she creates a depth that draws the view in.

The artist’s reception is February 22 from 5 to 8 pm at Gallery 1 TractorWorks, 800 Washington Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN 55401.

The Artist’s Reception will be on Thursday, November, 9 from 4pm to 6pm

As long as you’re in by 6, you’ll still have time to look around and chat with the artist.

Part retrospective of past works, part prospective of works in progress. The common thread connecting these collections is a fascination with the nature of memory and a determination to represent the phenomenon through purely visual means. The entanglement of abstraction with distinct objectivity is more than an aesthetic preference, it operates as a metaphor for the ineffable manner in which we experience our own awareness.
