Chapter 139: "Demon Search, Part 2"

Yo demons can be so rude. Norman's extermination plan is extreme and while I think it should only target the aristocrats and those in charge of any farms instead of drag down innocent lives down as well, these select few randos can bite the dust too simply because they're making fun of one of the kindest demons this series has to offer.

I know this world runs differently and the demons only see us as food, so this scene is essentially like us watching fish or something on a conveyor belt being tossed out, but it's still a hard scene to witness as these are literal babies.

His panic over stealing from the farm is actually kinda cute and I love how quickly his intentions changed, even from him switching from saying "it" to "her." He could've very well just had her for dinner, possibly improving the state of his face (since eating other humans haven't really worked in the past so who knows if she would've helped or not), yet he decides to treat her as family instead because of the empathy he feels simply because both their faces are a little messed up.

Someone please help this precious demon, he's trying his absolute hardest to figure out how to raise a human child and it's adorable! It means everything that he's raising her as his own daughter and not as food like the plantation mothers/sisters are forced to do. I wish he has an official name though aside from us just referring to him as Ayshe's dad because he's just so special and I love him. He's tied with Lucas & Alex as one of the best parents in the series and I'll go as far to say he's my second favorite out of the whole roster. (no need to ask about number one when it's obvious.)

I don't have any strong opinions on Zazie, like he's okay, I don't necessarily like or dislike him a great amount, but I gotta say that killing this amazing dad ain't gonna reward him with brownie points.

A moment of relief for me that this scene wasn't animated because I'm sure it would've made me tear up. Poor guy didn't deserve this.

Of course, by extension, this means that Ayshe didn't need to suffer this unfortunate loss either. This whole event sorta parallels the shelter raid, to the point where Andrew & his men invaded the escapee's home & ended up killing Yuugo & Lucas. Only difference is the children managed to escape their pursuer while Ayshe was basically captured by hers. We learn later on that Norman was already knowledgeable with the demon language at this point, so it's pretty bold of him to bring this traumatized girl back with him to paradise knowing fully well that she's hellbent on ending their lives.

I'm.. starting to remember why Norman is my least favorite of the fullscore trio and unfortunately it's partly due to all the pain he caused Ayshe to experience. Granted, her father's death was a direct result of Zazie's attacks, but it goes without saying that the kid was acting on Norman's orders. Sorry not sorry but I don't do well with people who make my favorites suffer, just look at all the dislike I have towards the demon god (the effects the reward had on Emma), Andrew (killing bunker dads & the injuries inflicted on Dominic & Chris), the GF demon (taking my queen's life), and Peter (he's a Ratri, there's literally so much I could list here). Norman isn't as bad as the rest of them, but eh, I can't find it in myself to adore him as much as Ray or Emma.

It's smart of her to remain quiet though. She can't risk acting out, whether it be on her desires or just being rebellious, since she's seen first hand how powerful the Lambda crew is.

Not really relevant to these panels but it's what made me think of this.. I wish we got to see Ayshe and Emma interact more. Or at all, actually. Ayshe learning that someone like our best girl actually cares this much for demons must have been such a relief to hear. I get that Ayshe kept quiet around the Lambda crew because of the stuff regarding her father, but she couldn't really bond with the other paradise hideout kids either since they all have opposing opinions about demons than she does.

HELP she is so darn adorable!! I would've been fine if Ayshe remained this cool assassin throughout the whole story because I really do love those cold, silent characters but being able to see her have a little silly side is such a pleasant surprise.

Just because Ayshe is now an ally doesn't mean that the idea of assassins magically goes away! That's still a concern!

Favorite panel/moment:

I pretty much adore every moment of the flashbacks between Ayshe and her dad, even the tiny moments we get in this panel are super cute. Norman wondered in ch127 if it was possible to refrain eating your favorite food if it asked you, so let me tell him that this tiny, happy family is living proof of that! Aaahh, they deserved so much better! (ALSO, the lights on the small table behind them are identical to the ones Ray & Mujika used back in ch45, so it's cool that all kinds of demons use those plants the same way.)

Ayshe has many lovable panels as well, but the tiny one here has a special place in my heart for some reason.

I love Ayshe’s backstory it made me tear up honestly. The thought of that demon actually loving her and caring for her. And actually being a father figure , teaching her how to read and speak is heartwarming. But bummed that she wants to kill Norman and the others !

On the other hand I have a feeling that Ayshe was asked to assist Don and Gilda only to kill them when they find Musica and Sonju. I can’t see Norman having any motive for killing them but the way Ayshe was presented. As in a lot of hesitation and looking questionable, just made me spiral LOL .

But kinda think that Ayshe will help Don and Gilda with their plan . Unless fear of Norman and his team arises in her making her believe she needs to do whatever job she’s been given or else she will be killed...

Don’t hold me on any of these “theories” because they lowkey don’t make sense - just needed to put my thoughts out there lol .

But honestly I just want all off them to live happily ever after ... is that too much to ask (◞‸◟) ?!

This chapter got me scared af. But I’m really invested now with the journey of Don and Gilda! —(´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥｀)

Let's just listen to that music😭.(better watching the music video, even it's not really related to the chapter) Father's day was just this Sunday so yeah, I cry😭.

Blood related or not Ayse and the demon loves each other❤️. That demon rise Ayse! Wtf! I really hate Norman right now.(But I still ship them both😍).

He really is a good father. He didn't even ate her the moment he stole her (even though he considered doing that, but still😍). He give her cloth, food, knowledge and love. They were happy and everything, but that's where Norman and his squad enters the scene ang ruin everything.

It really hurts😭. He is such a great father. He don't deserve to die, he needs justice😭.

Now, enough with all of the drama. Now we have more reasons for Ayse to join with Emma. She needs to avenge her father. Even me, if that's what will happen for just one member of my family, they will taste my wrath.

And then in every last panel of the chapter there is a BIG SURPRISE!

Deymm Hayato. Deymm Norman and his high IQ. Deymm them for pulling another ace.

Just how many aces do they have?!?!!

Ayse should really join Emma's group. But then I think Emma don't even want Norman to die so let's just see what she will do in the future chapters.

Don and Gilda - Chapter 139: Demon serch, part 2

how do you think Emma (post cannon or otherwise) and ashye would interact? I don’t think Ashye would hate her just because she’s Norman’s friends since she gets along with Ray in the side story decently enough

Ayshe definitely wouldn't hate Emma. While being raised by a demon, she's not misanthropic; she just hates a specific group of people.

I talk about this on my Gildayshe musings post and this recent poll, but the first conversation Ayshe has with Don and Gilda has them reacting like this:

(Chapter 139)

After she just told them Norman was behind her father's murder—someone who was her whole world—they're in tears at the thought of not being in conflict with him. Even when considering the possibility that Norman ultimately plans to kill Sonju and Mujika after they bring them to the paradise hideout, if there's a chance of negotiating with him, they'll take it.

It goes even further when Norman betrays them and uses them as bait just like they suspected in chapter 135.

(Chapter 144)

Gilda still pleads with Mujika, after Norman just tried to have her and Sonju—her companion of 700 years—killed, to help them stop Norman before things become irrevocable for him and everyone around him. She still considers him her older brother after all of that. Don looks empathetic and in agreement with her while Ayshe is left in open-mouthed shock, because she could understand if Gilda didn't want anything to do with him at this point.

But she also understands family, and her new companions have made it clear that her father's murderer is still important to them. She doesn't begrudge them for it.

And she doesn't hesitate to save them when they return to Grace Field.

She has known them for ten days.

Within the span of four days, she's willing to have this conversation with Ray:

This is after Emma has made it clear how close she and Ray are with Norman:

She's conciliatory to Don and Gilda when she says "it's true that he ate humans, but to me, he was my father" and here. Despite acknowledging that familial connection she feels toward him, she gives all of them an out. 'You don't have to spare my feelings. I understand why humans hate demons.' Knows most demons wouldn't think twice about eating her if given the opportunity. She's downcast and gives a light sigh of resignation because she's aware of how bizarre this would look to another human. They can conceptually see why she feels the way she does, but not how profound that loss is for her, so she'd rather skip the attempt at sympathy.

It's why she's so shocked at Ray's blunt declaration reaffirming her love for her father as valid and gives her full attention to him in earnest. She follows it up by saying their parents were also good people.

Given their prominence in the story since the start, I'm fairly confident the figures on the left and bottom center are Norman and Don respectively so all five of the oldest Grace Field kids are included here and poignantly attached to her sentiment. It's possible she's lying to Ray to be reciprocally kind or mentally separating the kids into differing levels of good with Norman at the bottom to still technically qualify him, but with less reason to lie to him between the validation of her feelings and the intimacy of the setting I'm disinclined to believe the former, and with the latter he's still included regardless.

With all that in mind in addition to how she's willing to let Norman and Vincent hold her dogs' puppies post-timeskip, it would be very bizarre for Ayshe to hate Emma. If anything she'd think Emma's too good for Norman lol

I also imagine there would be a lot of overlap between how she interacts with Emma and Ray.

(TPN Light Novel 4: Films of Memories - “Don and Gilda”)

She reacts this strongly to Don and Gilda even thinking about being burdens in the post-canon. Despite lacking those memories, there are still convictions she holds that are etched into her very being. If she was given a rundown of Ayshe's history, she'd also conclude that her father's species was irrelevant if he saved her and provided her with unconditional love, possibly more forcefully than Ray. It wouldn't come as a surprise to Ayshe, given her interactions with all the other Grace Field children at this point, but it'd be comforting all the same, that reinforcement of why Emma's friends and family cared so deeply for her and spent years searching for her. There was never really tension between them, but it makes Ayshe feel more at ease around her all the same.

I'm also a very big proponent of wlw Ayshe, so I enjoy @dyslexicsponge's take of her having a crush on Emma (intimidating Norman by going to hang out with him because he's so obvious about his crush on Emma and Ayshe's so smitten she doesn't know who else she could possibly commiserate with optional lol).

Love ur theories!!! I'm always reading ur analisis on tpn!! And would like to ask you.. do you think Norman is lying to Don and Gilda? Man, I want to believe him (and I do) but there's some things that doesn't convice me at all. Suddenly changing his radical point of view?? It is a little weird. But If he ends up lying on them just for his and everyones sake.. It will still be bad to lie to them.. I don't know. What are ur thoughts on this chapter??

In chapter 139 Shirai-san has already answered your question.

Don was right to assume that Norman lied to them, and wanted them to lure out Sonju and Mujika to kill them.

However Don and Gilda underestimated him and assumed that he sent Ayshe to do the killing, when really she was a way too obvious choice if Norman really wanted to deceive them.

They fell for his distraction, and failed to see his true plan at all. In fact they didn't even wait to hear Ayshe out. I bet that was a mistake.

So did Norman lie to Don and Gilda because he didn't trust them or Emma about Sonju and Mujika being good demons and helping them? After all he has said that he wasn't sure if he would follow Emma's plan...

I think Norman believes Emma and others when they say that Mujika and Sonju had been good and helpful to them. However, I also think he doesn't trust Mujika's and Sonju's motivations to help to be as pure as the others think.

And you know, he seems to be wrong about Mujika, but he is right about Sonju. Sonju is absolutely a threat to humans if he is left alone.

Yes, he is not a threat to the current kids, but if they ever grow up, and have children and grandchildren of their own...

Sonju wants to hunt and eat them. He would absolutely eat humans in the future; even if he doesn't have to.

So yes, Norman lied to Don and Gilda, but he lied to them because he suspects that Son-ju and Mujika may have hidden agendas that they haven't told the other kids, and are more dangerous to humans than they seem.

It's wrong to lie, but he is doing it to protect future generations, and he is right about the threat.

The biggest problem with the idea of all demons and humans living peacefully after they drink Mujika's blood is exactly Son-ju's attitude:

What if the demons choose to eat humans even if they don't need to?

I am not sure how this problem will be resolved, but I presume that Emma is trying to negotiate with the demon!God that it should be forbidden for demons to eat humans.

We shall see if demon!God will accept it. I actually highly doubt it, especially if like Mujika said there is already some other promise.

They had to make a compromise in the escape arc as well; when they consulted Phil if they should leave the young ones behind. Perhaps this time they will consult Mujika about what to do with demons who still want to eat humans.

So I wouldn't be too hasty to condemn Norman, he has very good reasons to be worried about Sonju, although I would prefer if they tried to talk to Sonju and convince him not to want to eat humans... but who knows if he would ever listen?

What to do then if he refuses?

These are the difficult questions...
