2023 Toyota Prius Prime XSE
Toyota heard the calls for better Prius styling, so the new Prius Prime plug-in hybrid now looks as good as it performs. Styling sells, baby!
Sleek new Prius Prime provides a plug-in with style … Consider this, driving more than 200 miles in a week and only paying ten bucks, and change, for the privilege. No, I wasn’t coasting down hills and there was no tornadic wind at my back. I was slipping through the air in a sleek new Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid. People noticed, but that was due to its shape, not its stellar gas mileage…

Song Inspo: “Over the Hills and Far Away” by Led Zeppelin
Word Count: 2.9K
Tags/Warnings: A bit of angst, bit of hurt/comfort, bit of spice.~

Discreetly from the passenger side of the car, you peered through the binoculars again. Your target was in view through the unusual circular window: an average looking white man in his fifties, peeling a tangerine from the comfort of his kitchen.
According to his driver’s license, his name was Martin Reynolds. Sam was investigating the sudden death of his wife, Laura, and the wives of two other men in the small town of Whitebury, Mississippi. Laura was the first victim, so you and Dean were watching Martin for any suspicious activity.
Your companion shifted in his seat. You could hear the give of the well-worn leather against denim. The Impala wasn’t exactly inconspicuous for a stakeout, but he refused to be trapped in your “tiny-ass” Toyota Camry all afternoon. You preferred the term compact.
“What’s our he-witch up to?” Dean asked.
Your lips twitched at a smile.
“We don’t know if he’s a witch,” you said, but you passed him the binoculars.
Dean’s mouth quirked to one side before he took a look. “Well, he probably isn’t a shifter.”
“What makes you say that?”
He gestured back at the window and gave you back the binoculars. You peered over and saw that Martin had half the tangerine in his mouth while he opened his mail with a letter opener. It flashed like silver in the afternoon light.
“If that is silver, it would rule out a lot of things,” you agreed, “but it still wouldn’t tell us why he killed his wife.”
Dean looked over as a white Porsche pulled into Martin’s driveway.
“Hmm, well, I’d say motive is comin’ in hot. Literally,” he said, watching intently when a young woman stepped out of the car. Her dress was as tight as the ponytail tied high on her head, a coil of blonde bouncing down her back.
You sighed, with a roll of your eyes. “Typical.”
You noticed the way Dean’s smirk wiped the boredom away from his eyes. It was annoyingly handsome, along with the neatly trimmed stubble across his cheeks, framing a strong jaw and the enticing bow of his lips. You had to resolve to ignore all of it, heaving a small sigh.
You wedged the binoculars between you both and toyed with the silver rings on your fingers—both a fashion statement and a safety precaution.
“Could be a demon deal,” you said. “Three men sporting Touch of Gray, three wives over 40.”
“Damn. That’s cold,” Dean shook his head, crossing his arms from the driver’s seat. Always from the driver’s seat. “That’d be pretty cut and dry though. Downright stereotypical.”
You gave him a smile. “Since when do you like it complicated?”
“Like it?” he scoffed. “What I like and what I get are on two different fucking hemispheres.”
You sensed bitterness there, underneath the dry remark. You looked away from the scene in the kitchen where Martin was pouring Barbie, his presumed girlfriend, a glass of white wine. Just like you thought, Dean’s brief good humor faded, falling into his resting state. It was a harder look than you were used to seeing on him over the years. His lighter, devil-may-care attitude in his younger days seemed to gain a little bit of edge every time you saw him next.
A few decades of bullshit, blood, and loss will do that to you.
But every time he called, you answered.
“You okay?” you asked. You tried to hide the depths of your concern, but maybe you just weren’t good enough. Dean glanced at you and forced his crunched brows to relax, as if he’d caught himself opening the hatch a little too much. Letting his true depths come to light a little too long.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m good,” he replied.
Sure. Always good.
You met him with a long look, your head rolling onto your shoulder.
“Hey. You can be honest with me, you know,” you reminded him. “What, you think I’m gonna tell Sam all your secrets?”
Dean smiled a little, but he shook his head, remaining stubborn.
“Look, I’m fine. Just the usual bullshit,” he said. “Nothing you gotta be dragged into.”
You frowned. “What, aside from this hunt? Aside from the last ten years of bailing your ass out?”
That last part was more joking. The truth was, Sam and Dean had helped you just as often as you’d tried to help them.
Now, Dean just shook his head. The fact that he didn’t levy back a smartass response further let you know that something was off with him.
You bumped his arm lightly over his jacket.
“Come on, tell me all about your man feelings,” you teased. It had its intended effect, bringing a reluctant smile to Dean’s lips. He shot you a look, and you couldn’t help but admire how the dimming sun caught in his eyes, that pale green.
“Whatever. Like I said, I’m good,” he said, deflecting further by turning up his music. Yet another Led Zeppelin song was playing, but at least this one was more mellow. The guitar riff filled the car at a moderate volume. You guys were still on a stakeout, after all.
You shook your head, despite your smile. “You sound like a grumpy old man.”
His brows popped up. “Old?”
You shrugged impishly.
“‘Cause if I’m not mistaken, you’ve got a bit more mileage than I do,” he retorted.
You laughed, shoving his shoulder.
“Well, that’s just rude,” you said. “You’re not even a year behind me. Matter of fact, you’re just a few steps shy of Touch of Gray in there. I can even help you find your shade. I’m thinking, what, medium brown with a hint of silver fox? Could be very George Clooney.”
The disgruntled look on Dean’s face had you dying.
“Now that’s just uncalled for,” he said, even though his lips were curving upward at the sound of your laughter. Without you knowing, he took in the infectious sound, and the way you pressed the back of your hand against his arm while you tried to get ahold of yourself. It was everything he’d ever liked about you.
Easy. That was what it was, being with you.
The hard part always came afterward, watching you leave.
Letting you leave.
“It’s just…I don’t know,” you said, biting into your lower lip. You smudged your lipstick there, a dark, juicy red. It was distracting enough that Dean almost missed what you said next.
“You seem weighed down.” Your eyes were more serious then, beautiful and warm in their honesty. “Every time I see you, it’s like you’ve got fifty more pounds on your shoulders.”
Dean didn’t have an answer for you, even as he held your gaze.
His cell phone ringing cut through the guitar melody slowly fading into the next song. Dean fished it out of his pocket and answered Sam’s call.
“Hey, what’cha got?”
Tumblr media
Your hunch proved correct. Sam tracked down the demon that made soul-claiming deals with a handful of men from the same golf club. All of them bored of their wives, and all of them with too much money on their hands—enough that they refused to lose any of it in a messy divorce.
It was like the opposite of the First Wives Club, and you were sickened.
When you and Dean questioned Martin, he felt just guilty enough to spill his guts.
Sam managed to gank the demon on his own, which left you and Dean with a conundrum: what to do with the marked men who sold their souls. No matter how much justice you thought they deserved, their souls were still damned to Hell either way. As Dean pointed out, that would be price enough to pay.
You were sour about it, but you let Martin and the rest of his scheming bastard friends go…after leaving him with a well-placed knee to the nads. At the very least, he wouldn’t be making any more scheming bastards anytime soon.
Dean was still smirking when you two piled into the Impala. Sam was waiting to be picked up at the bar across town, where he’d found the demon.
“Shut up already,” you laughed.
Dean shook his head, still grinning as he put the car in Drive.
“I didn’t say anything.”
Your smile remained, but not for long as you stared out the window. You liked the evening time, where there was still light enough to see, but the world was winding down in shades of orange-gold and violet. The streetlamps were slowly coming on, lighting the way along the road.
The car pulled to a stop at the red light, there at a busy intersection.
“Hey.”
Dean’s voice, deep and a little tired, caught your attention.
“You okay over there?” he asked. He was side-eying you again, this time in concern. You could see it behind the usual gruffness.
“Yeah, I’m good,” you said. “Just makes me glad I never got married. Else I might’ve gotten shivved just so he could get out of paying alimony.”
Dean sucked his teeth. “Apparently it’s a bitch.”
You gave him a dry, withering look. He chuckled and briefly reached over to squeeze your arm.
“Hey, come on. That shit’s not happening to you,” he said. “He’d have to be dumb, deaf, and blind.”
You tilted your head at him, a small smile lighting up your face again. You couldn’t help the way your face warmed in a blush, especially with the way he was looking at you, all smirky and charming and unequivocally Dean.
“Green light,” you reminded him.
He returned his attention to the road. His right hand was molded onto the steering wheel casually. His left rested on his thigh, while his fingers bounced to the beat of a song off his second favorite Zeppelin album. And you knew that, because he’d been playing it on repeat all day.
Many have I loved, and many times been bitten. Many times I've gazed along the open road…
You watched his profile, for a moment spellbound. The sky dimmed over his shoulder, casting him in both light and shadow, gold and dark.
“Have you ever…” You didn’t even know where you were going with this, but you’d already opened your mouth, and Dean was already glancing your way, with half his gaze on the road ahead.
“You ever gotten close to having something real? Someone who's not gonna shiv you when you’re fifty,” you said.
A laugh caught in his throat. “Hell, I never thought I’d see my forties, but here we are. Apparently I’m old.”
He shot you a wry look. You smiled.
“That’s one hell of a way to avoid the question,” you said.
Dean shook his head, this time with a sigh under his breath. For a second, you didn’t think he would answer you. You almost didn’t blame him.
The music filled the silence in between.
Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing. Many, many men can't see the open road…
“Once,” Dean admitted. “I thought I had it, but uh…didn’t take.”
“Was she a hunter?” you asked.
Dean shook his head, his eyes staying on what lied ahead.
“Just wasn’t my life,” he said. “Couldn’t keep dragging her into mine.”
There was a lot there, buried deep. You couldn’t even begin to find a shovel, so you let it be. Though you should’ve predicted the way he turned it back on you.
“And you?” he said, brows raised. “Never had a douchebag in a sport coat, playing Caddyshack at the club every weekend?”
You shook your head as you laughed. If nothing else, Dean could paint a picture.
“Definitely fucking not.” You rested your chin in your palm, your elbow finding purchase above the door handle. “You know me. I’m either too much or not enough.”
You didn’t notice it then, but Dean looked over at you with a frown tugging at his lips. He didn’t like the melancholy in your voice, or the way you turned to look out the window, like you were trying to hide from him.
Instead of putting voice to any of the thoughts rolling through his head, he kept driving.
Tumblr media
The Impala rumbled to a stop in the parking lot in front of the bar. You were ready to meet Sam for a couple of beers inside. You grabbed your bag resting on the floor between your feet, but Dean’s stayed your hand, his own wrapping warmly around your arm.
You looked over at him with blinking, expectant eyes. He met you with sincerity.
“Anybody who says you ain’t enough, doesn’t know you,” he said. And then, his smile was back, quirking up at the corner. “At least, not like I do.”
Slowly, you smiled back. Your blush fairly radiated down your neck as well as your face, but you crossed your arms.
“So I’m too much. Is that what you’re saying?” you said.
He chuckled. “I plead the Fifth on that one.”
You fell into a fit of laughter along with him, and you both climbed out of the car feeling a little bit lighter. The blaring red neon sign above the bar blinded you for a moment. You turned to see Dean fiddling with his keys, trying to pick out the right one to lock up the car.
Some deep-seated feeling compelled you to go to him. You made your way around the hood and stopped just behind him. You called his name softly.
Dean turned to look at you over his shoulder. He was surprised to find you there so close. It led him to turn around all the way.
You didn’t give him, or even yourself time to think.
You grabbed the edges of his jacket and pulled yourself up to press your lips to his. It was more or less a gentle kiss. Just a sweet, slow meeting of lips. You pulled away just as slowly, the heels of your boots lowering back down to the ground.
Dean blinked his eyes open. When he came back to himself, he looked down at you in surprise and with a hint of a smile. He had the imprint of your lipstick smudged across his plush mouth.
“What was that for?” he asked.
You smoothed your hands over his jacket. It was a bit too hard to meet his eyes, so yours landed somewhere around his chest. It was also too hard to say what you really wanted to say, so you settled on half of the truth.
“A thank you, I guess,” you said. “And maybe the next time I see you, you’ll have a little less weight on your shoulders.”
His calloused hand cupped your cheek, and he earned your gaze, blinking up at him through your lashes. You couldn’t name everything you saw in his eyes, but it was more than just surprise or lust. In fact, he seemed to be debating with himself, fighting something deep inside.
You saw the exact moment he made his decision.
“Maybe we should make it count then,” he said, his thumb brushing over your lower lip.
You didn’t even trust your voice, but your gaze drifted down from his eyes, to his mouth. Your shallow nod in agreement was like releasing him from his chains.
Dean framed your face with both hands and drew you into his kiss, like he was breathing life into you. You certainly felt alive.
You clung to the back of his shirt, to his arms, while he gathered you flush against his chest. His strong hands glided their way down the small of your back, eliciting tingles down your spine. All the while, he drew you in deeper and deeper with each new sensuous glide of his lips against yours.
You yelped in surprise when he turned with you in his arms, just to press you into the side of his car. Dean pulled open the door to the backseat, and you climbed in willingly. He followed after you, at the same time you dragged him over by the front of his shirt. Soon his jacket was wrenched off his shoulders along with yours, both tossed somewhere in the front seats along with his shirt.
While you explored the new expanse of tanned skin, roaming your hands over his strong, broad shoulders and dipping down his back, his lips had fastened to your neck, teasing and grazing with his teeth along your pulse point.
You were already moaning and panting in his ear, your body arching to meet his as you slung a leg across his lap. He grabbed onto your thigh and squeezed, pulling you even tighter against him.
Still, you couldn’t help but smile in amusement.
“Aren’t we a little old to be making out in the backseat?” you said.
“You can be a little old for a lotta things, sweetheart,” said Dean, his voice gravel and deep as sin. “But this ain’t one of ‘em.”

Fictober Day 23: "we can fix this, I know we can"
That '70s Show Fanfiction
Red should'be known better than recruiting the kettlehead to help with his project. Rigging a pneumatic device to open his Toyota's hood "will be a piece of cake," Kelso said. "I can even make it roar." But now they were in Red's garage with a car whose hood belched smoke and refused to open.
"We can fix this. I know we can," Kelso said and disconnected the pneumatic pump from the Toyota. "It'll just take some thinking."
Great. Kelso needed to think. That had never gone well.
But he pulled on his safety latex gloves, pried open the hood, and waved away the smoke. "Well, here's your problem." He plucked out a chunk of dry ice from the car. "How'd this get in here?"
Red was glad he'd chosen to wear a turtleneck sweater. He was flushing, and his neck often gave him away. "Squirrels."
"Squirrels?"
"Wisconsin Autumn squirrels. Don't tell me you've never heard of them." Red cleared his throat. "Their paws are immune to cold temperatures."
Kelso placed the dry ice in a corner of the garage. "Where would they get this from, though?"
"Trees. Stored ... oh, hell. I did it. Wanted to test if it would work."
"Oh, it worked. It froze your car and the pneumatic pump." Kelso laughed and pointed at him. "Whose the kettlehead now? Burn!"
Red was burning. He'd take off his sweater if it wouldn't reveal his embarrassment. He wasn't that old. He hadn't become senile, but he his former, childless impulsivity influenced him once in a while.
"The damage doesn't look too bad. Let everything air out. Pour hot water over the dry ice in the backyard. After dinner, we should be good to go."
"I didn't mean to keep you from your family this long on a Monday night." Red's voice was gravelly. He'd finally quit seeing Kelso as that teenager who'd glued himself to Red's fridge. Or as the idiot he'd locked in this very garage for dating his daughter. He still had the monkey wrench he'd used as an unspoken threat. "When did you get a brain?"
Kelso sat on a work stool. "1985, I think. When I graduated from technical school."
Red laughed quietly. Kelso needed to have a brain to go to technical school at all. The glimmer of his genius with computers first showed itself way back in 1976, Christmas Eve. "I'm glad you grew up, son.'
He clasped Kelso's shoulder, and Kelso leapt off the stool like Red had thrown the first punch in a boxing match.
"For Pete's sake, I'm not gonna hit you. I'm complimenting you."
"Sorry. I'm not used to that ... from you."
"And I'm not used to you having common sense."
Kelso smiled and waved dismissively. "Oh, don't worry about that. I don't have a lot."
He seemed to believe that trait was a good thing, but Red didn't argue. He followed Kelso, who carried the dry ice, into the backyard. Kelso left the dry ice there, where white smoke rose from it.
"We should probably take care of that before we eat," Kelso said. "But totally use dry ice during your Halloween party out here. Just not in your car."
"Yeah. Got it."
They entered the house through the patio door. Kitty was busy cooking dinner in the kitchen, and Red kissed her on the cheek. Then he filled a large pot with hot water. Kelso helped him carry it to the backyard.
"Look away while we dump this thing," Red said. "Should've worn my safety goggles."
"We still can. Let's put this down on the grass."
They did as Kelso said, placed the pot of water on the ground and went to Red's garage. Red found two pairs of his safety goggles and passed one to Kelso.
"What's it like raising two kids?"
Red's hands froze on his safety goggles' elastic strap. "We'll talk about it at dinner."
"Cool."
Together, they returned to the backyard and melted the dry ice. Within the hiss and smoke, Red marveled at how much could change in ten years. Two of his kids were going to give him grandkids. Kettlehead had become smart -- smarter -- and wiser. And Red no longer viewed life as a misery to get through until the peace of death. He enjoyed simple pleasures, like creating a monster car for Halloween, and he had a hell of a lot more to look forward to.
Better to start life at a low point, survive two wars, a recession that could've cost his family their house, and suffer a moderate heart attack and end up here, now, in his mid-sixties as a happy and healthy man than start off well and lose every hope, every joy.
He wouldn't change any of it, except for selling his Corvette. For a pregnancy that wasn't a pregnancy but his wife's menopause. But a man couldn't have everything.

You have probably not heard of the new Toyota HiLux Champ pickup. Probably because they don’t want you to know about it. “They” being the people who control the federal regulatory apparat, who don’t want you to know that people in other countries can buy a brand-new pick-up for $13,000 or so to start – something no American has been allowed to do (in America, at any rate) for more than 20 years.
And it’s more than just that. The ’24 HiLux Champ is a mid-sized pickup – not a compact. The latter was the last kind of truck you could buy here for around $13k or so brand-new, about 20 years ago.
You can guess why not – and it has nothing to do with “emissions.”
But hang on for just a second while we take a look at the truck you won’t be allowed to buy, if you’re stuck living in America.
The HiLux Champ is everything a truck used to be, beginning with affordable. It costs about half what you’d spend to buy the least-expensive new truck you’re allowed to buy in America – the Ford Maverick – which stickers for $23,920 to start. And unlike the Maverick – which looks like a truck – the Champ is a truck. Put another way, it isn’t based on a FWD/AWD layout (as the Maverick is) and it features body-on-frame construction rather than unibody construction, which is how almost all new cars are put together.
That means it’s tougher and simpler. Easier to fix – and less likely to break.
And it is affordable because it’s basic as it comes – which is how trucks used to come before a tag-team combo of government-mandated “safety” features that don’t make a vehicle less likely to crash (and in some cases, arguably, make them more likely to end up crashing) and a culture of living-beyond-our-means turned even “base” trim trucks into what would have been considered loaded trucks back when trucks were still trucks.
The HilLux Champ is like those trucks – the ones we used to be able to buy in America, some of them made by American companies. But that was a long time ago.
It is available in standard and long-wheelbase versions and with a diesel or either of two gas-burning four cylinder engines and a standard manual transmission – the latter once-upon-a-time being the standard transmission in pretty much every truck sold in America.
Ditto the regular cab – which has all but disappeared from the American truck market.
It even comes standard with AC – something that used to be optional in pretty much every truck sold in America back when trucks were still trucks and cost less rather than much more than cars, as they do now.
Just not climate-controlled, three-zone AC.
And just one air bag.
It also comes standard with configurability. Toyota designed it with pre-drilled attachment points to easily mount various types of beds, state kits, boxes – pretty much whatever the buyer would like to add to the truck. And Toyota will help the customer do that, by putting them in touch with aftermarket companies and suppliers that can help with that.
Instead of one-size-fits-all (and take-it-or-leave-it) and the price tag that comes along with it, here’s a truck that anyone who can afford a new motorcycle can afford to buy.
“Our ultimate goal,” says a Toyota spokesman, ” was to make this (vehicle) affordable and accessible. If people can afford their first car, which they can use to run a business and generate income, it will enhance their quality of life and provide new economic opportunities.“
It is unimaginable in America – what has become of America – because the American government is not interested in enhancing the quality of life of Americans – much less providing them with new economic opportunities made possible by their being able to afford a truck like the HiLux Champ. The government that rules Americans wants Americans to be endlessly struggling just to make ends meet, a goal that is achieved by making everything cost more than they can afford. Picture a gerbil wheel and you will have a sense of the plan.
The object being to prevent the accumulation of capital by average people, so that they never become capitalists. That being a threat to state capitalism – i.e., the ownership of essentially everything that matters by the government and the corporate lampreys that feed off of it.
This is achieved by arranging things in such a way that most people spend whatever they earn just to keep up with their debts. This serves the corollary interests of the government and the financial system that bought the government more than 100 years ago (if you’re interested in learning more about that, Edward Griffin’s Creature from Jekyll Island is an excellent primer).
And that is why Americans aren’t allowed to buy a $13k pick-up like the HiLux Champ.
Not because of “emissions” – which are just another bogey. The Champ’s engines do not pollute. But they aren’t compliant – with the very latest American emissions standards, which is not the same thing (or even in the same ballpark) as “polluting.” The Champ meets “Euro5” emissions standards, which allow for almost no emissions. But that is not good enough for the American regulatory apparat, which uses the pretext of “emissions” and the lie that trucks such as the HiLux Champ “pollute” to keep them out of the hands of American buyers.
So as to assure that American buyers aren’t able to buy – as opposed to endlessly make payments on – a truck like the Champ that they might be able to pay for in cash. Or pay off in a year or two.
And so be able to accumulate capital (wealth) rather than live hand-to-mouth.
And there you have it.
Or – rather – there you can’t have it. And now you know what – and why.

The phone next to our bed rang, and I made stabbing attempts to locate the receiver. Good morning Charles said a scratchy voice, it's half past six, breakfast is at seven. I gradually became aware that this was not general information designed to satisfy a mild curiosity but instead to instill a sense of urgency to respond, react and present ourselves in the dining area ready to start a fresh day of exploration. Stumbling into clothes we obeyed without a murmur. Life looked much improved after a strong coffee and Eggs Benedict!
Shamwari Game Reserve has been going for some 32 years. Previously the land had been used for farming cattle and sheep. The only exotic animals would have been wart hogs; aggressive in their own way way. Clearly any native animals had long ago been moved on; successful cattle rearing not mixing well with predatory species. Over the years Shamwari has been reintroducing native animals to this area, and gradually the reserve has grown in size. It is owned by a Dubai conglomerate who are sensitive to the aims of the naturalists wanting to protect and grow threatened groups. One such group is white and the more endangered black rhinos. Even within the safety a game reserve provides, poachers will infiltrate and steal the horns so valuable on the black market. This constant war now employs AI technology to monitor 24/7 each rhino successfully thwarting many perpetrators. Population figures are highly sensitive and never published for added protection. They know overall which species are available in the reserve because they put them there, but numbers and where there are at any one time is where the mystery lies and what occupies the ranger's mind. Today we have seen lion, white rhino, zebra, African buffalo, giraffe, elands, kadu, vervet monkeys, red hartebeest and loads of birds. The male lion had made a kill this morning and will be satisfied now for the next 3 days. We are told he would not turn another opportunity down but equally will be happy to sleep and relax for 18 hours a day until Wednesday. Nice work if you can get it!
After a tapas lunch we were all set to explore some more, this time looking for cheetahs and leopards.
The search started around 14.30 and we soon saw elephant, more white rhino, eland and oryx but no cheetah. We stopped for drinks and nibbles. Other rangers were also on the lookout for cheetah but nothing. Then Raymond our ranger saw cheetah tracks; some going up the hill, and fresher ones coming down. Next there was a radio call to say one had been spotted. We leapt back into the Toyota and headed towards the sighting. There in a clearing were two brother cheetahs lying in the grass, stomachs swollen and the remains of a kill next to them. An unfortunate kudu had been outrun. This was a very fortunate spectacle since we not only saw two cheetahs, but also saw them after feeding. An absolutely perfect end to the safari day and just as the sun was going down. Both animals continued to look nervously around. They are predators but they are also prey to others; lions, leopards.
We were amazed at just how close we could get to these wild animals; just feet away from us.
Our Toyota Landcruiser returned us to base for a braai (South African BBQ).
ps The braai was great. We had pork ribs, chicken, oxtail, couscous, aubergine and bread type things. It was delicious. Loads of SB to was it all down. This place is amazing and the staff are so friendly and helpful.

Burnout-Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Summary: You may have heard of a mid-life crisis or even a quarter-life crisis, but what is a mid-life crisis called when you’re 32? After giving up on your dreams to become an actress, you find yourself working an interesting, but not optimal career. You’re also living in Los Angeles with a great, but not excellent man. With a massive crush on the one-and-only Dieter Bravo, you spend your time reading fanfiction and questioning what could have been…but what if it’s not too late?
Pairing: Dieter Bravo x OFC
Word count: 3.8K
A/N: I imagined this story like a show. Each chapter is like an episode. Each song I'll attach is like an end of episode song. Thank you for reading!
For Now - Thee Sacred Souls
Chapter 1: Good Enough
Hot, toasted bread shot up from the toaster and the woman in her Los Angeles apartment reached for it eagerly. She was in a rush, but she was starving. The morning light streamed in through the cloudy, aged kitchen window, heating up the apartment already even though it was only a quarter to nine in the morning.
The Los Angeles heat seemed intent on baking her apartment to a crisp today and she made a mental note to turn the window A/C unit on in the guest bedroom before she left for work to protect her dogs from the heat. Could she eat at work? Probably. But rubbing her tired eyes, she only had a one-track mind to get the simple breakfast in her belly and get on the road.
Regardless of when she left the apartment, she would have to battle the intense Los Angeles traffic and in the mood she had woken up in, she did not want to do that on an empty stomach – both for her safety and the safety of the people of Los Angeles.
“Ah! God! Ouch!” she screamed, burning her hand on the too-hot toast.
The pain woke her up and broke her from her repetitive train of thought. She had been ruminating on her life, as she always did when she was tired and hungry. More and more, she was finding herself to be dissatisfied with her life and she was especially nasty with her thoughts and self-criticisms when she was in a foul mood.
The woman shook the pain out of her scorched fingertips and reached for the toast once more to flop it onto a paper towel and slather some I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! on it and head out the door.
The meager breakfast only made her feel worse this morning. She was a pastry chef, after all. She had no business being unable to feed herself properly, if she had woken up early she could have made herself a nice breakfast with protein that would satiate her and make her feel better.
But she hadn’t. And so, she bitterly ate her toast as she ensured that her dogs were carefully locked away in the guest bedroom that they stayed in while she and her partner were at work. The two animals gave her puppy dog eyes, sad to see her go, but excited to get their morning treat. Then, she turned the window A/C unit on to ensure that they wouldn’t be suffering in the Southern Californian heat and made her way out the door.
“What are you doing?” she said aloud as she locked her apartment door behind her. “Why are you unhappy? Why is nothing good enough for you?”
She swore and questioned her own sanity as she walked to her car, a beat up 2009 Toyota Camry. Her car was an accurate reflection of how she felt her life was going. The car was nice enough if it wasn’t so basic and didn’t have any scratched paint.
As she sat in the driver’s seat, she scrolled through her phone to pick a playlist for today’s drive to work. As she selected her favorite playlist to try to boost her soured mood, a text message from her partner flashed across the top of the screen.
[Partner]: Have a good day at work. <3
She sighed and a sense of heavy dread filled her. For a moment, she considered ignoring his text until she arrived at her job, but she knew that her partner would expect her to respond fairly quickly.
“U too <3”, she typed out before shoving her phone into one of the empty cup holders of her car and putting her car in reverse.
Work was mundane, but then again, how could it not be? She was good at what she did –amazing even – but how could she be satisfied when work came easy to her. She always wondered what life could have been like if she hadn’t chosen the easy option time and time again.
What should you do as a career? Easy route. Which man should you choose? Easy route. Should you have children? No, easy route.
Perhaps it was that her life was not lacking in happiness necessarily, but it was the challenge that was missing from her days. People always said that men would cheat on their partners because of the lack of a hunt. Once a man conquered a woman, they had already succeeded in their neanderthal brain, or something like that.
Maybe that was it. Maybe she needed a hunt of her own to keep her satisfied in this life. Her job as a pastry chef at Disneyland’s Central Bakery left more to be desired. Sure, she was able to be creative and create cute treats that brought smiles to the faces of both children and adults alike. The job would be a dream job by the standards of any prospective pastry chef, but she couldn’t see it that way.
She washed her hands of the frosting and sugar that coated her hands after creating a new batch of pastries for a testing group to try. They were new pastries that were inspired by the latest Disney hit film, Encanto.
She frowned as she looked at the delicious multi-colored tray full of delights on a sheet pan and wished that there would be another Asian-inspired Disney film. There were so many ideas in her mind for treats that harkened back to her own culture. Maybe, just maybe, she could even act in it.
Eyebrows knitting together with frustration, she dried her hands with a fresh rag and thrust the thought out of her mind. Acting for her was a been there done that endeavor.
When she had been living with her former partner in Northern California, she had tried her hand at acting diligently, but she had never tried after she moved to Los Angeles with her expartner. There were less opportunities there, sure, but she didn’t think that she would ever make it in LA. Especially with her age now.
Let’s face it, she had been in her early twenties when she had made a true attempt at becoming an actress. Her beauty was what she considered to be at its peak when she had arranged for professional headshots to be taken and sacrificed each and every paycheck in order to take time off of work and go to audition after audition.
In the Bay Area, she had landed a few odd jobs but nothing to really add to any sort of portfolio to further progress her dream of being an actor. To be honest with herself, though, was it really her dream?
She had always found difficulty with finding the difference between her own dreams and the dreams that her mother had made for her. Even her name, the middle name Starr, had been her mother’s wishful thinking that her first-generation American daughter would be the greatest success of their family.
Her mother had wanted her to become a doctor, a dentist, anything that would bring their family generational wealth in order for her mother to consider their immigration and struggles that they faced to be “worth it”. She would even settle for her daughter to be an actress, despite the career not coming with the educational accolades that immigrant parents so desperately wanted for their children.
But the woman couldn’t provide her mother with even that. Instead, she decided to become a pastry chef. She worked for one of the major corporations in the United States, and so her mother at least appeared to be proud of her. What would she think if she gave acting another shot though?
Now, at 32, would people even give her headshot a second look?
Even in the highly saturated market of Los Angeles, would she land a single audition? She didn’t know for sure, but her chances seemed doubtful. There was no way that she would be able to swing it financially either.
Acting was a pipe dream, nothing more.
The woman rolled her eyes and started to pack up her supplies and ingredients before delivering the test products to the tasting group that had arrived for their appointment.
“They’re delicious!”
“Amazing, incredible. What a creative recipe.”
“Oh my goodness, these are going to be such a hit in the Parks.”
“A Disney-bloggers dream! The kids are going to love this!”
They complimented and praised her endlessly and made the decision right then and there to roll the new Encanto products out to Disneyland, California Adventure, and Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. She should be proud of herself, should be tickled pink by her ability to wow corporate Disney into including her original recipes into their theme parks.
If she was honest with herself, though. She wasn’t proud. She could hardly fake her smile as the tasting group congratulated her on yet another successful recipe.
All she could think about as she gathered her belongings and left for the day was what could have been. Should she have stayed with her toxic ex? Should she have started dating her current partner?
What would her life have been life if she hadn’t even gotten involved with men in the first place? Would she have achieved any of her dreams then?
What if she had moved to Los Angeles on her own at 22 and really tried to get into acting then? Would she be famous now? Would her mother be proud of her?
She twisted the keys in the ignition of her car and rested her forehead against the steering wheel while these anxious thoughts swirled within her head. They were overwhelming and dangerous thoughts. She could do it today if she wanted to, she had enough saved up in her personal checking account.
If she really wanted to, she could leave her partner and take one of the dogs and go. She could even quit her job right now. Her boss was still at the office, she could walk back in and say two words and end it all.
“I quit.”
But then what? She would just be alone without a direction to go in. Without even her placeholder career to fill some of the void within her.
And so ending it wasn’t an option, it was just yet another a cop out. A decision that would only result in the downward trajectory of her life instead of being a new beginning. And for what it’s worth, she didn’t want to hurt her partner. She didn’t want to split up the dogs either, they were best buddies. The four of them were basically a family, she couldn’t destroy her family on a whim, despite being an Aquarius.
She laughed at the idea that she could be so dissatisfied with her life because of her star sign. Surely there were Aquarian women in the world that were happy with their lives.
There must be. Right?
When she arrived back at her apartment, her partner’s car was already there.
When they had first gotten together, they had met through their work. But in the years that they had spent together, he had grown and changed and picked a different career path. He was less creative now, more serious, but he still loved her all the same and his own business was taking off and allowing them to save up to possibly be able to afford something small in the area.
She entered their apartment and put on a smile as her dogs happily bounded up to greet her at the door. Their evenings were disgustingly routine based and the more she went through her typical steps, the more upset she started to feel. All she wanted to do was strip down to her underwear and lay in bed and cry for an hour, maybe more.
But life was good, life was great. And so, she had to take off her shoes and pet her puppies and kiss her partner on the lips before heading to the kitchen to put together a quick and easy dinner as usual.
She stayed in her own head as she cooked. She had started to resent cooking their meals night after night. Didn’t he know that she spent all day putting ingredients together? It was the last thing that she wanted to do when she got home from work, and yet, he would happily sit on the couch and watch the evening news while the dutiful “wife” fixed together a meal.
They ate at the small dining room table that she had found on the side of the road when she had first moved to Los Angeles. It was the only piece of furniture that she was allowed to keep in her nasty breakup with her ex and she was proud of it. She had even refinished the wood a couple of years ago to spruce it up and remove some of the association with her emotionally abusive ex-partner.
As they ate dinner together, her partner droned on about how the business was doing well and how he was considering hiring a new employee. She ate her food and nodded when appropriate, answered affirmatively when she felt like he needed to hear her encouragement.
She had this relationship down to a fucking science now.
She knew just what to do to make him smile, what to do to make him feel confident, what to do to make him feel secure and wanted. She also knew what made him tick, what made him furious – but she stayed far away from doing those things.
As the two of them completed their meal and their two dogs roamed underneath the table to pick up any errant crumbs, the woman stood and took both of their plates to the kitchen to wash up. Her partner resumed his usual position on the couch as she rinsed off the dishes and placed them in their dishwasher. They were lucky to have it, the last five Los Angeles apartments she had lived in hadn’t had one.
“Do you want to watch a movie with me?” her partner asked from the couch. “I found a new one - or - new-ish one. It has Dieter Bravo in it, I know how much you love him as an actor.”
“Oh?” she asked, her interest suddenly piqued.
For the first time all day she felt genuinely excited about something. She had always loved Dieter Bravo and made a conscious effort to watch just about everything he had ever been in.
She was slightly upset that this film has gotten past her radar and pulled her phone out to look the movie up to verify that her favorite actor was truly in the film.
“Yeah!” her partner said enthusiastically, picking up the TV remote. “It doesn’t have the best reviews, but I mean, what do reviewers know, right?”
“I don’t see how it can be bad if it has Dieter Bravo in it,” the woman agreed, joining her partner on the couch. “He makes anything he acts in good.”
Her partner laughed and navigated their smart TV to Netflix and then selected the film.
“Here,” he said. “You start it and I’ll make us some popcorn in the microwave.”
“No, no,” the woman said. “I’ll wait for you to come back before I start it.”
Her partner smiled and kissed her on the forehead. “Okay, baby. Sounds like a plan.”
“Sounds like a date,” she countered in an attempt to sound romantic.
She sat on the couch while her partner made them popcorn and placed the snack into their typical movie-watching snack bowl. As she waited for him, she surfed online looking for any other new Dieter Bravo releases. She was still kicking herself for forgetting about the release of this film and was desperately looking to see where the film had been promoted and announced online.
When her partner returned with their snack, she pressed play on the film and settled in for what she hoped was two hours of amazing Dieter Bravo content. Her partner slinked his arm around her, and she leaned into him, although with a little hesitation. Their dogs found their places on the couch as well and the whole family snuggled in for a snack and a movie before bed.
However, when she found herself watching the film, she found her crush on Dieter Bravo escalating. She loved his swagger and his looks and how he carried himself on screen.
As the two of them watched the movie, she started to look between her favorite actor and her partner and compare the two of them to each other.
It came as no surprise that Dieter was much more handsome than her partner. He was cute by LA standards, but not dreamy like Dieter Bravo was. She even toyed with the thought of watching this very film with Dieter Bravo instead of her partner and found that she much preferred that idea.
Was this cheating? She thought. Am I wanting to cheat on my partner?
No, she would never do that. Not after her experiences with her toxic ex and especially not with her partner’s history with his own terrible ex. But she was finding herself significantly more attracted to Dieter Bravo than she was to her partner. That was normal though, wasn’t it?
She tried her best to avoid thinking about it for the duration of the film, all the while her partner was kissing her cheeks and her forehead and hinting at wanting to turn the movie off and head to bed instead. He wasn’t a fan of the film, it was obvious, and it was starting to frustrate her.
She refused to pass judgment on the film for its actual quality. The movie had her favorite actor in it and that was all that mattered to her. Call her a bad film buff if you would like to, she had her preferences and Dieter Bravo was one of them.
Her partner’s hands roamed along her body igniting the fire of frustration within her. He was obviously trying to get busy and pass on the rest of the movie, but there was still another 30 minutes left in the film and she wanted to continue to watch.
“Hey!” she snapped. “I’m watching this.”
Upon seeing the hurt in his eyes at her harsh tone, she corrected herself and became the sweet girlfriend that he knew and loved.
“I’m sorry, baby,” she said, nuzzling up to him. “I am just really enjoying the movie is all. I really want to finish it before we go to bed.”
Her partner nodded and planted yet another loving kiss on her forehead that was starting to repulse her the more he did the loving action. Why couldn’t she be with Dieter Bravo? Why couldn’t she just be an actress and work with him and meet him? That is after all how she met her current partner, through her work.
As the movie continued, she started to pay attention to it less and less, instead fantasizing about meeting Dieter Bravo on the red carpet at the Oscars. She would be wearing a gorgeous black dress that complimented her raven hair and her makeup would be immaculate, done by one of the best celebrity makeup artists in LA. She would be up for an award, and he would congratulate her on her nomination. Maybe he would even grab her hand and kiss it when they met like the gentleman that he was. He was so sweet and charismatic; her life would never be boring if she were able to spend it with him.
“Are you falling asleep?” her partner asked her, shaking her shoulder gently.
The woman snapped out of her trance and the images of flashing camera lights and famous celebrities dressed to the nines slid away from her vision.
“What? No, I’m not falling asleep,” she said defensively.
Her partner smiled at her, and she couldn’t help but compare his less-than-perfect smile to Dieter’s.
“I mean, I only ask because you were closing your eyes and slumping over on me,” he said with a chuckle.
“Oh no, I was just uh…thinking about work,” she lied, trying to cover up her traitorous thoughts.
“Oh yeah? You never told me about your day,” her partner said, planting yet another affectionate kiss on her hair. “How was it?”
You never asked about it until now, she thought bitterly. Because you only care about me when it’s convenient.
Or did he? She couldn’t decide if that was a fair assessment or not with the level of lust that she was feeling for someone she had never even met in person before.
“It was great. The Encanto pastries I’ve been perfecting were picked up today. First tasting group and they decided to put them in Disneyland, DCA, and Magic Kingdom,” she reported.
Her partner shook her by the shoulders excitedly. “That’s amazing, baby! You’re so good at what you do. You always impress them so much with your work, you’re their best asset.”
She smiled at him without her teeth, unable to shake the feeling that he was only confirming the horrible doubts that she had about her career choice.
What would her partner say if she told him that she wanted to quit her job and try to become an actress again? He hadn’t been with her during her failed pursuits of acting in her twenties, but he was aware of how that time had gone in her life. Would he support her? Would he be horrified at the thought of them becoming a single income family in LA?
To be honest with herself, that thought horrified her too. But there was still something there, whether that flame within her had just been stoked by watching her number one crush appear on their TV screen or the dream really was her own, she still wanted to give it another shot.
These thoughts plagued her mind as she looked at him, unsure of how to respond to his compliments. Her heart panged with the dread that filled it. She was once madly in love with him, and she was also once in love with the life that they had created together.
In his eyes, she saw nothing but love and adoration for her in the way that he knew how to give her love, but his gaze only filled her with more uncertainty.
“Thank you,” she said, trying to fill her voice with genuine emotion. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” her partner said, leaning forward to kiss her.
The kiss was deep and passionate from his end, but she met him with terse lips and hesitation within her very soul.
Fighting back a grimace, she closed her eyes and imagined that she was kissing Dieter Bravo instead. Immediately, she felt her body relax and she found herself deepening the kiss.
Giddy and lovesick, she allowed herself to be led to their bedroom all while she pretended that her partner was a completely different man than he was and that she was a completely different woman.

Do you have any drivers anxiety tips ? lol so random I know! . I’m so very embarrassed how long it’s taking me to finally have the courage to sign up for lessons 😭😭
You shouldn't be embarrassed, anon! I know so many people who experience driving anxiety, and so many people who are well into their 30s who still don't have their driver's license as a result of it (including a few of my very good friends). Driving is, ultimately, operating a heavy machine, so I totally get why that can cause a nervousness. Hell, while I don't really experience driving anxiety in my own car (I've had it for 14 years though, haha), I absolutely can when driving other people's and especially when driving a 2-tonne truck, which I sometimes do for work.
I think the best thing for driving anxiety is giving yourself a minute after you get in to take a breath and orient yourself. There'll be things your driving instructor will take you through, like checking your mirrors, the gearstick, the lights, the dash, but I think it's also good to check yourself and your posture too.
If you're like me and shorter than the average height (constant reminder that cars are really built for men, haha), check how comfortable you are looking over the dashboard. I drive a Toyota (and try to hire Toyota's when renting) because they have a really low dash which makes them a lot more comfortable for me to drive and makes me feel like I have a better scope of the road. Recently, I drove a friend's Honda and had to get a cushion to sit on to feel more at ease behind the wheel as the dashboard was pretty high.
Similarly, test the pedals before you turn the car on, get a sense of any stiffness (or lack thereof), and feel how much weight or how light a touch you might need to put down to accelerate or brake.
Once you feel oriented, just turn it on and give it a go! Starting off with an instructor is a great thing, because I can promise you that there's nothing they won't have seen before, and don't be afraid to start slow, take your time, and don't take any risks. Driving is definitely one of those things that gets easier the more you do it, and some of the things that might seem a bit confusing at first will become intuitive with a little time and practice.
I also find it's worth remembering sometimes if you're feeling anxious that cars have to go through a lot of road testing and safety testing before you're ever even allowed to glimpse them in a catalogue, let alone get behind the wheel, so know that you have that on your side too.
Good luck, and happy driving!

Gearing Up for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser to Make its Way to Orlando Toyota
We’re so excited that Toyota has decided to revive the iconic Land Cruiser SUV! Toyota of Orlando is here to let you know what to expect from the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser when it arrives next spring.
Tumblr media
You may remember that in 2021 Toyota released the last Land Cruiser model, which was a large luxury SUV. It had a super sleek and sophisticated design with great off-roading capabilities and featured a 5.7L V8 engine. The negatives of this vehicle were the lack of fuel efficiency and the high MSRP - more than $80k. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will have some major differences and improvements - here are some of the biggest elements:
Bigger focus on off-roading functionality
Not as “luxury” as the 2021 Land Cruiser
MSRP around $50k range
i-FORCE-MAX turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder hybrid powertrain
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: What to Expect
Here are just a few details that our Orlando team knows about the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser so far!
Global TNGA-F body-on-frame made from extremely strong steel, giving more rigidity to the chassis
4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter than 2021 model
Three different models - the Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Land Cruiser 1958, and Toyota Land Cruiser First Edition
i-FORCE MAX engine will get 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque (plus better fuel efficiency)
Full-time four-wheel drive system with center locking differential and electronically controlled two-speed transfer case
Let’s Talk About the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Design Features
Smaller interior - 5 seater with a moonroof instead of 8 seats like the 2021 model
New technology including the latest Audio Multimedia System with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected services, and over-the-air updates
12.3-inch multimedia monitor and 14-speaker premium JBL sound system
Each model will have a different interior - from fabric choice to SofTex to leather-trimmed seats in multiple colors
Unique heritage badging, round headlights, and new paint colors such as Wind Chill Pearl, Trail Dust, and Heritage Blue
Sporty, boxy exterior with RIGID lighting and 18” alloy wheels
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system with blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and hill start assist control

Navigating Toyota’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
Tumblr media
Safety Sense is a range of Toyota driver assistance features included in every Toyota. These features act like an extra set of eyes and ears, monitoring the area around your vehicle for potential threats. Each system provides warnings, usually both audio and visual, that enable you to act and avoid an accident. We’re going to look closer at a few of these features and see how they keep you and your passengers safe.
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
This system uses a dedicated camera and radar to detect vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians, or animals in front of your vehicle. If something is detected, the radar determines your Toyota’s distance to the object. The distance is compared to your current speed to determine if a collision is possible. If a collision risk is identified, you’ll hear a warning tone, and a visual warning appears on your screen.
