Selvedge in detail on our Wide Leg Jeans, woven in Toyoda looms in Okayama a replica of a 1950’s denim by a 120 year old family run mill. The Toyoda Loom, development of this loom began in 1891 by a 24 year old Sakichi Toyoda, in 1905 Sakichi Toyoda San would inprove on his invention which would now refill itself without stopping the weaving. It wasn't until 1924 that he would receive the final patents for his Toyoda power loom that we know today equipped with automated (Jidoka) reload and stopping mechanism. Sakichi Toyota San had created what we know today as Toyota Industries Cooperation. It's this loom that's used on most of Dawson Denim Workwear. All our denim comes from 3 family run mills in Japan, two of which date back to the 1800’s. We visit every 18 months when possible and when we go we take the opportunity to stay in #kurashiki most people know of this small town because of its rare Bikan historical centre. For us we stay there because it’s the birthplace of Japanese denim. In the 1880’s the same decade the #dawsongarage was built Kurabo denim was weaving in this town.
