three weeks ago i began work on a little Eleventy-based website template for storing character information akin to Toyhou.se. it's been in a releasable state for about a week, but i've also been pushing updates to it near daily!

i also wrote up a quick tutorial for setting up the project on its download page, but i plan to improve it in the future.

features:

built-in "namespaces" for characters, locations, and stories, with their own page templates and information card formats

uses eleventy's tagging system to allow you to tag pages for fine categorization

a big focus on linking to other pages. each "creative" page lets you navigate between the previous/next item in the category. pages have a "linked pages" list that allow you to navigate to related pages, including "what links here"

a content filtering system allowing developers to hide/blur certain content from people who have not opted into it. optionally supports needing to click an "i am 18+" box before entering the site

lightbox images; clickable image links that can reveal metadata such as captions and artist credits

tabbed views allow you to view specific sections of content at a time, used in the various creative pages

SASS wrapper for optional better-formatted stylesheets. don't know how to use SASS syntax? SASS also supports regular CSS!

Do you mean the team cards? Try downloading them from the site itself or through the Toyhou.se world. Unfortunately Tumblr might have lowered the quality when they were posted here.

3: Eppie ($20 / OPEN) A gentle girl of bittersweet memories and regrets. She knows what you left behind a few years ago and speaks well-wishes that you have grown since then.

4: Ines ($15 / OPEN) A quiet girl of a long-forgotten winter forest. She saw many travelers disappear into the trees and later found their names carved into the boles.

5: Cyprien ($15 / OPEN) A serene child of a peaceful and whispering river. Beneath the surface, they are slowly cultivating a garden sanctuary for all manner of aquatic life.

8: Rhett (SOLD) A drowsy boy of warm breezes and daytime naps. He swears that he met some good friends in a dream a few years ago, and claims that you were one of them.

9: Gavi ($15 / OPEN) A calm and regal child of lonely, foggy nights. They guide lost travelers out of the mist and back onto the road, but will ask for a shiny coin in return.

10: Lyric ($20 / OPEN) An excitable child of an abandoned playground. If you find them pouncing about, be prepared to be told everything about an obscure songwriter.

TOYHOU.SE TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

Hi! I’m new to Toyhou.se, and only started dipping my toes into coding a few months ago.

Although I can’t code properly yet, I still have some tips for getting into use of the website.

Disclaimer: This is only useful for very new beginners, I am not claiming to understand any of what I’m talking about!

1. FINDING YOUR PROFILE CODING THINGY

To code your profile, you need to go to settings, as seen here:

It’s going to be a bit overwhelming, but familiarise yourself with each tab of your settings bar.

Here is where you want to go:

The biggest part of using this HTML code box is to disable the WYSIWYG, which will allow you to actually input HTML and run it.

You do that by tapping this:

You can find HTML templates by browsing. 

The search page is pretty self explanatory, just have a flip through and familiarise yourself with the search settings. These settings are very diverse, and you should have no issue perusing the website to its full potential.

If you want to find codes type “profile” into the tags bar, that usually works for me

IMPORTANT NOTE: When using a template or code made by someone else, remember to read the rules of the code, boundaries are important! And make sure you always credit. The credit will often already be provided, so make sure to not obscure that. If it is, add credit somewhere visible on the page.

2. UPLOADING A CHARACTER

You can create a character here:

It will always be customisable, so if you need to customise it after submission, here’s how you find it again:

You’re gonna want to click on the characters icon:

And from there, search for CONTROL SETTINGS in the bar to the left. It will be in Manage Character > Edit Profile:

(add in the RGB values (not HTML code) into the first three 0s for your colour. The 0.1 can be adjusted, i.e. 0.80, for the opacity)
