So it was set during the Sunshot Campaign, vivid war setting, a lot of explicit sexual content,a long fic I think but definitely more than 10k. It was about Wangxian getting too during the war. I remember only some bits. LWJ asked JC for permission to get married or something of the sort and JC got mad because he thought LWJ was joking but started to negotiate with LXC when it became apparent he was not. Before the final battle WWX promised LWJ that they won't die.During the final battle LWJ got hurt and seemingly died and WWX lost control and made a giant earthquake that collapsed Koi Tower with JGS inside. LWJ was kind of dead for a while but his spirit stuck around (I don't remember why really just that maybe it was part of some spell?) and WWX managed to resurrect him but he needed to regain his memories slowly.

I can't remember exactly how wwx and lwj meet, but I think they promised each other that they would marry. lwj then goes home and finds out that his marriage has been arranged - turns out it was wwx's family who got too excited and asked behind his back. During the sunspot campaign (?) jzx admits he wants to marry jyl, and wwx and jwy sit down to negotiate the terms (it is implied that they're going to take him for everything he's got and he's going to let them). Just then mianmian bursts in towing a very confused jgy who then realised what's going on.

They deleted some of their fics a while back including this one. The fic is not available on the wayback machine but you can access it, chapter by chapter, through cached search results. 13. For fic finder: My apologies if I recently sent in this ask: this fic has been on my brain for the last few days and I can’t remember if I already wrote in about it or not! It was a modern au about pro e-sports. The different sects are different gaming teams in this fic. WWX was accused of cheating a few years back and had to leave the Jiang team. LWJ, captain of Lan team, eventually finds WWX again and asks to enter a competition with WWX, and I think together they can pull off some kind of special move in-game that shows they have incredible teamwork or something. The fic reminded me of the danmei novel God Level Summoner, but I think the general theme of “fallen champion player gets back on his feet and wins the league” is pretty common in esports stories.

15. Hello, thank you for all your help! I am now looking for a fic where Wei Wuxian was raised as Jiang Cheng's whipping boy. This was a common practice among the gentry except for in the Lan clan. JC grew up and he tried not to do anything that would lead to WWX being whipped in his place but during the Cloud Recesses lectures Jin Zixuan demands WWX be whipped and JC can’t really stop it. Lan Wangji tried to intervene but Lan Qiren held him back saying not to get involved in other sect’s conflict. I think Meng Yao was also a designated whipping boy for Huaisang, possibly all the whipping boys for all the young masters also attended the lectures as manservants? hello! i was wondering if you would mind me asking for period/wuxia cdrama recs - i have really appreciated your blogging on various shows and have run out of things to watch 😅 off the top of my head i've really enjoyed stuff like minglan, love like the galaxy, heroes, monarch industry, yanxi palace, eternal brotherhood, a journey to love. thanks in advance for considering this ask!

I love giving recs!!!!

You may have watched some of these already but hopefully some are new.

There are no xianxia on your list so I am not providing any xianxia or xianxia adjacent recs :)

Novoland Eagle Flag - in my top 3 cdramas. Recommending it because you mentioned Eternal Brotherhood and in a lot of ways, NEF is if EB had a bigger budget; it has the same "low fantasy" vibe and a main who is a gritted teeth idealist in a feudally dark world.

Vigilantes in Masks - because you mentioned AJTL. This one features Liu Shi Shi as an outlaw and is also a story of a group of down-and-out people coalescing together into a team on a mission. She and Wallace Huo have insane chemistry.

Battle of Changsha - from the writers of Minglan. It's set in 1930s so not sure if that is an issue, but it is a wonderful, nuanced story of a family with a great love story in the middle, but the family is as or more important in the narrative.

Love In Between - because you mentioned Heroes and AJTL. This one is a criminally underrated drama. It follows a group of people whose mission intersects now and then and they are sometimes a team and sometimes enemies. FL is on a quest to heal her master, ML is a physician with no martial ability, due to childhood events, there are seemingly favored daughter and son of a fancy sect, an information broker etc etc. There are causes, love, friendship, grudges, some fascinating gender reversal dynamics, the filming is beautiful. It's just genuinely amazing. Listening Snow Tower also has that vibe (FL and ML both fascinating, tons of cool secondaries) and is also a wuxia I love.

You seem to like female-centric narratives where women triumph and deal with harem or family or plots etc matters. The Sword and the Brocade is inferior to Minglan but has that same vibe. The Princess Weiyoung and Legend of Xiao Chuo are both "female protag rises to power and obtains love" that are fun.

I hesitate to recommend General and I even tho I adore because a lot of people don't like Angelababy, but to me this is a great entrant into "FL is strong and ruthless and with her own agenda and that is what ML falls for and they form a team eventually subgenre." The same is true for Twisted Fate of Love (so so so good and so so underrated!)

Everyone loves Nirvana in Fire but I prefer Nirvana in Fire 2 (different generation, no need to watch the first one) due to family dynamics and approach. It also has idealists against the court, politics vibes.

The Young Warriors is ooooold (over 20 years old) and looks it, but is one of the best family centric period narratives and a lot of concurrent great stories and dynamics and also confrontation between warrior protags and corrupt court (see shades of EB) and the same for Lan Ling Wang (it features an amazing love story to boot) tho that one is newer of course.

Oh, and if you haven't seen Joy of Life 1 and 2, it has everything you would love I imagine.

The Rise of Phoenixes is a great narrative about families, power struggles and a love story with two vvv smart protags.

Thoughts about 2x03 - What Might Be (show spoilers)

When I started watching the episode and Nynaeve was going through the Accepted test, I was hooked. I really loved what they did with the Arches of What Was and What Is.

And the Arch of What Will Be... My confusion and reaction to that! In my head I went from shock at her never being able to be an Aes Sedai again, to hope when she sees Lan, who offers her to go back to the Two Rivers together. Then I realized I was fooled and I felt so good! Like, that is all she'd ever want. The combination of Lan and caring for her people. But then she didn't go through the gate. She stayed with Lan.

And Egwene and the Tower grieved her... I mean, I had hope that she would come back, but the distress I went through... I was terrified they would take my favorite character away. At the end of the episode, she came back. But only after spending a long time in the Arch, having a little girl with Lan (who let his hair down and was extra hot) and being there with her family and Mat and Perrin, the Trollocs came and killed everyone, leading her to run through a second gate.

This storyline... I have no words for it. It is so good. One of the best I've ever seen, certainly the best in a fantasy series. The other storylines, with Rand in Cairhien, Mat and Min (who works for Liandrin), Perrin and the Seanchan (excuse me UNO), they were very good, but not comparable to Nynaeve's test.

For me, the best episode up to now. Wow. I cried multiple times.

Small babies do not lead to binging so I won't be up to speed on WoT until closer to ep 4 dropping (especially with 1hr + episodes), but I HAVE managed to watch ep 1, so (ep1 AND book-spoilery) thoughts:

Overriding thought: fuck I just love the writing/adaptation on this show, it's so smart! They are using all the many moving pieces of the book series in such an economical way! Bayle Domon is probably the best example of this from this episode; they set him up to run into the Seanchan, established the Sea Folk, gave Moiraine a quest plot point, and did it using his canonical interests, in a scene which absolutely did not happen in the books. Love it. Also, love his accent, absolutely perfect, no notes.

The way the episode was structured/had a theme was also really good - it picked up on where everybody was and connected them to each other even while the point of the episode was how far apart they have all drifted. The Bel Tine ceremony is both a great callback to the opening episode of last season, a way to visually link them, AND a reminder that it's been a YEAR since last season began now. (It amuses me that Nynaeve and Egwene are going to have had significantly more time in the Tower in the show than the books - but is probably necessary since they are unlikely to leave, return, and leave again as they do in TGH/TDR.)

We didn't get MUCH of new!Mat but he's selling me on it so far (the chiselling at the wall!) and oh boy, they're working overtime to give him a solid reason to be extremely wary of Aes Sedai, aren't they. I'm sure that will have no repercussions down the line whatsoever.

I love how they've remixed Adeleas and Vandene with Verin and let Moiraine and Lan's flying visit turn into a longer retreat to recover. This is also very funny to me because on the re-read podcast I listen to (Wheel Takes) the new reader is CONVINCED that Vandene is secretly Black Ajah. Well...now she's gonna be right!

Small but cool note: when Lan takes Moiraine that plate of food, I liked that it was very clearly from South Asian foodways and not Fantasy Stew. They're taking the cultural depth of the world well beyond casting - obviously in costuming too, but costuming is fairly easy, food is a step up.

I think the one criticism I have of the worldbuilding is that the Tower still feels a TAD underpopulated (I would have liked to see Egwene and Nynaeve in a slightly larger novice class, and some indication of the academic learning that's part of their training) but this has improved a lot on the COVID-restricted depictions from the first season, so it's a minor criticism (and may very well be addressed in later episodes).

I liked Loial last season but the actor has really settled into the role this season: looking forward to more of him.

Also really looking forward to more of Elyas, and intrigued by how they're choosing to depict Perrin's new smelling senses as a visual recreation of what happened - I think this makes sense for a visual medium, not sure it will be totally obvious that it's meant to be interpretive not literal, but then for a new audience does it need to be? It's a magic ability/superpower, that's the important thing to get across.

That extra 10-15 minutes of run time helped the episode breathe so much. It's going to add up to nearly an extra episode and a half if it keeps going across the season; that's not bad, and needed I think.

I love Nynaeve's time in the arches in S2E3. Each test was very interesting and her reactions made perfect sense. Nynaeve passed the first arches because it was latently false. Her parents are long dead and though she was vibing it and loved seeing them again deep down she knew it was merely a memory. The reason why she passed the second test was because she cared. Nynaeve thought of Tam because she clearly respects Tam and of course guilt on what she think is Rand's fate. Nynaeve feels that she failed Rand and Tam. Nynaeve had not rejected the Two Rivers, she wanted to use The Tower to help them. Of course the Aes Sedai would reject this but this fits into why she initially failed the third test, she sees the good in people. Nynaeve genuinely sees the good in people. In the books the third test was a heartbreaker but easily dismissed because it is seemingly a false future, Malkier is still long dead and Lan wasn't a King...yet. In the show arches Lan gave Nynaeve an out and it was a good fake out because Moiraine basically divorced Lan anyway and Nynaeve always thought Lan would eventually see through Moiraine. The Arches gave a great and actually convincing lie.

I love the third test because it is not only Nynaeve's ideal fantasy but it wasn't a purely selfish one. Perrin and Mat were happy and fulfilled in Nynaeve's fantasy. Perrin was doing what gave him peace and didn't have PTSD flashbacks from Nynaeve's kid playing the sword game with him and Mat was happy, charming and successful as well as being loyal to Egwene. Nynaeve only wanted the best for the Emond Field 5. The reason Rand wasn't in the fantasy was because Nynaeve thinks he is dead and even though she hates Moiraine, Nynaeve believed her lie. Seeing the best in Moiraine despite her own dislike in the women like she does Mat who she clearly deeply cares about.

This is further shown by Egwene being a brave, honourable and respected Aes Sedai. Nynaeve HATES the Aes Sedai but knows Egwene really wants to be an Aes Sedai and acknowledges it and thinks she would be a success there. All Nynaeve wants is acknowledgement and this is shown by Perrin and Mat choosing to hang out with her and Egwene keeping in touch with letters. The show really kept the spirit of Nynaeve strong.

Let's contrast this with Rand's fantasy in Season 1 Episode 8. There is no Tam, no Nynaeve, no Perrin, Mat is only acknowledged as a wastrel and the only person there is a compliant Egwene. Rand rejects the fantasy as Egwene is too compliant. There is little sense of community and all this shows is Rand's dream life. No dream or ideal life for anyone else. Mat is not presented in a good light and it paints a sad picture on Rand's priorities.

Even though only a day or two passes for Nynaeve's mind the full many years passed. Nynaeve was given a good life but I think the Trolloc attack happens or something like it when a novice fails a test. The Arches will murder an interloper. I know all three deaths foreshadow amazing things to come but the manner of deaths is interesting. Mat got literally blindsided, possibly Nynaeve's thoughts on the daggers effect on her friend (Moiraine, Liandarin, Rand and Egwene don't have high opinions of Mat. Nynaeve and Perrin genuinely think the dagger was the only real darkness in Mat, an external effect). Perrin fought well but couldn't handle anything other than a one on one fight because he isn't a soldier nor a beast in her eyes, no yellow eyes. Lan was killed in a co-ordinated attack showing his status as a respected warrior. Nynaeve killed a single trolloc with a sword because she did so before, had Warder training and a bit of ego as well, we all imagined ourselves doing badass things. Nobody's perfect, not even Nynaeve lol.

Nynaeve wanted to save her daughter and not just her own skin. It was heartbreaking Nynaeve's daughter didn't materialise with her. Now that would have got the internet fan base riled up lol. I much prefer show Egwene to book Egwene. Book Egwene cares about people if they have use to her whether it be for her learning to rule or serving her. Show Egwene is still a tough wilful politican even at this early stage but she loves and cares for Nynaeve despite her own bouts of jealousy. Egwene thinks Nynaeve can be saved because of course Nynaeve can be saved, she is the most tough formidable woman Egwene ever met. Elayne was sweet as she respected Egwene's grief and wanted her to actually process it in a healthy manner. I adore Elayne and Nynaeve's friendship in the books, my favourite relationship in the books so I hope this is the start of something beautiful. I hope Nynaeve sees Elayne as a sweet kind empathetic girl despite her incredible privilege and Elayne sees Nynaeve as the brave badass who is worthy of the faith and loyalty Egwene has in her.

Best episode of the entire series so far. Let's hope it keeps it going.

Happy Birthday to my beloved Blorbo, Nie Huaisang!!!

Here's a little prequel vignette in the universe of my fic "It Was You All Along" - but it's perfectly understandable without the fic as context!

Takes place post-NMJ's death, pre-WWX's return - The SangCheng is one-sided pining in this vignette (but rest assured, it ends up requited eventually :D)

Nie Huaisang had been at Koi Tower the day he received the invitation.

In all honesty, it wasn’t where he’d wanted to be for his birthday. He longed to be back at the Unclean Realm with a good book and a full bath, and afterwards he would curl up on the bed in his brother’s room – which had not been touched since the day he died, other than to keep it dust-free – and cry himself to sleep. Birthdays hadn’t been the same without Nie Mingjue there to act grumpy and threaten to sling Nie Huaisang over his shoulder and drag him to saber practice, and then surprise him with something truly special.

The last birthday gift Da-ge had given him had been a beautiful silk fan. It had burned along with the rest of his things on that fateful day...

But instead of being in the familiarity of home, he was in Koi Tower. Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao had insisted on him spending his birthdays with them as an attempt at keeping his spirits up, both saying that it’s what Da-ge would have wanted – the thought had turned his stomach. He had never fought them, though, needing to continue the appearance of being addled by grief – and currently, he was trying to establish just how much Lan Xichen knew about Nie Mingjue’s death. Jin Guangyao continued to act as if it had been simply a terrible tragedy of fate and he was foremost in Nie Huaisang’s plans for revenge, but he had yet to completely discount Lan Xichen’s potential role in the matter. Perhaps Er-ge was innocent. Or perhaps he too had betrayed Nie Mingjue.

Perhaps Nie Huaisang was exhausted and tired of pretending, of spending his days filled with terror and suspicion. Perhaps he was hollow and lifeless beneath the surface of his skin, and perhaps he had a desperate hope that the moment his brother was avenged, that the life within him would no longer be smothered by grief.

But that day, there was the invitation.

It was on fine quality paper with the emblem for Yunmeng Jiang, and clearly stated that there would be a courtship tournament for Jiang Wangyin. He remembered the cultivation conferences where the matter of Jiang Cheng’s marriage prospects had been discussed, with the other sect leaders treating his bachelorhood like a problem that needed to be solved, rather than it merely being a matter of a man living his life the way he wished and damn the rest of their opinions. He’d done what he could to distract them, but sect leaders were mostly busybodies by nature and enjoyed meddling where they weren’t wanted – particularly those whose wives and daughters had caught a glance of the handsome Sandu Shengshou and wished a piece of him.

Honestly, he couldn’t blame them – he’d fantasized of that very thing since he’d been a boy in Cloud Recesses.

He had been given the invitation by Jin Ling himself with the expectation that he would bring it back to Qinghe and post it for his disciples. It was a reasonable expectation, and Nie Huaisang did intend on doing just that. Even if he wished he could destroy it. Even if he wished the tournament would never happen.

That night, after putting on an excellent performance at playing the fool for Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen, he lay in his night robes, curled up in his guest bedroom with the invitation in his hands. His thumb rubbed against the ink forming the name Jiang Wanyin - oh, Jiang Cheng must have hated that they’d used his courtesy name.

In the dark of night, he indulged himself in a fantasy – it was his birthday, he deserved it – that he himself would enter the tournament. He would dress in his best robes and put on his best airs, and every step of the way he would beat out the competition. And when he won, he would offer Jiang Cheng his freedom – a promise that he would hold him to no commitment unless he wished it... and then Jiang Cheng would look at him, profess his undying love, and take him to bed without another moment’s hesitation.

It was, after all, a fantasy.

He finally folded up the invitation and placed it on his night table. Fantasies were wonderful, but he could never confuse them for reality. No doubt only women would be allowed to enter in the tournament. And he truly didn’t have the time to participate in such a thing – he had clues to dig out and suspects to eliminate or verify, and there were still parts of his brother’s corpse that he hadn’t found yet, not to mention the daily duties of being a sect leader that he tried to manage despite all appearances otherwise. There were so many things to do; what time did he have for something so frivolous, even if he were allowed to participate?

After all, wouldn’t Jiang Cheng toss him out the moment he showed up? “Very funny, Nie-xiong,” he imagined him saying, the nickname something Nie Huaisang hadn’t heard since before Wei Wuxian’s death and missed terribly. “Now stop making a joke of this and get back to Qinghe where you belong.”

He chuckled, imagining in his mind’s eye the huge eyeroll he would receive for even trying to put himself forward as a candidate.

“Don’t laugh,” another voice spoke in his mind, turning his chuckle into a sob. “You may be lazy and frivolous, but you’re still my Didi and anyone would be lucky to have you. If anyone ever said you weren’t good enough for them, point me at them and Baxia and I will inform them otherwise.”

He sniffed and wiped the tears from his cheek. “Goodnight, Da-ge,” he whispered into the darkness.

“Happy birthday, Huaisang,” he heard as his brother’s voice faded from his mind.

He closed his eyes, intent on trying to push his emotions aside and fall asleep. In what heart he had left, he sent a wish to the Heavens that they show Jiang Cheng some kindness and bring him a spouse that would make him happy and love him for who he was – even if that spouse could never be him.
