Ship It! for Kakegurui?
I think the way this is supposed to work is that you send me a ship then I give my thoughts on it, but fuck it this works too.
The ship I will be detailing my thoughts on is Kirasaya, as in Momobami Kirari x Igarashi Sayaka!
(Disclaimer, I've only watched the anime so take my opinion with a grain of salt)
What made you ship it?
Throughout the entirety of season 1 I kept fucking hoping that Kirari would get her shit together and actually acknowledge her feelings for Sayaka (if she actually had them) and stop letting the poor girl live in doubt. Then came season 2, and the Tower of Doors, and let me tell you I literally fucking cheered and fist-bumped the air at the end. That was the turning point from "Ehhhhh" to "Full speed ahead, next stop yuri town".
What are your favorite things about the ship?
The fact that Kirari is basically an absolutely fucking insane chaos gremlin who couldn't even confess to her crush without pulling a massively elaborate stunt that must have cost her millions to arrange and construct. And Sayaka, smitten angel that she is, is 100% there for it. She loves this fucking lunatic. Yeah, she probably should sit Kirari down and explain to her that fucking with her head like that IS NOT OKAY, but I believe in these messy bitches. They can make it work.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
It's much more boring when it's interpreted as a toxic relationship. Like, you're stripping away the layers that make them interesting when you just turn it into "manipulative psychopath takes advantage of naive lovestruck fool". Like, in my completely subjective opinion, that shit just doesn't work.
EDIT: Clarified some wording.
#questions and answers#kakegurui#kirasaya#kirari momobami#sayaka igarashi#tbh most people in kakegurui are either insane or have a secret stash of insanity they can tap into for emergencies

Homura answered my question about Kirari's spin-off. The original Japanese audio was very long, so I selected only the part where they answered Kirasaya and transcribed it using voice-to-text technology and used ChatGPT to translate it. Afterwords, to ensure better understanding, I also did some editing and added annotations. I hope you enjoy reading it.
Is it like saying you want to read a Kirari’s spin-off like Midari and Twin? Thank you very much. Kirari is great, right? You probably like the spiciness/ zing between the president and Sayaka, so if you do a Kirari spin-off, it's natural to come out at the end and you may have that kind of feeling. But when you think about it realistically, Kirari can't lose in the spin-off, right? That’s invincible in gambling. Writing about it wouldn't make much sense. So what to write? It might turn into a story where you just write about the lovey-dovey between Sayaka and Kirari. Indeed, it would be a difficult content to create.
Little by little, well, regarding Kirari to Sayaka, I have something to say.
In the spin-off novel that I wrote, I added their interactions with a sprinkle of trip and purification techniques, but particularly among women. (Note: It may refer to the scene where they washed each other's backs in the novel about hot springs)
I put my heart into it, of course, and thought about each characters, but I couldn't imagine what the president was thinking, so I couldn't grasp it. Well, I wrote a spin-off novel in which I put in a lot of Sayaka's interaction. Therefore, I thought about Sayaka and even put my heart into creating her lines. As a result, I became too emotionally invested in Sayaka and when she is involved in the main story, it becomes a bit painful. It's not that I don't want to see it, but it's just that my emotions while reading it become kind of...not unbearable, but sad. I don't like being tossed around so much, Kirari. Well, it's more like admiration for how difficult it is. Yeah, that's right.
How many other followers the president has. I say "followers," but there are probably many who are just not interested and cannot approach her. Do they love her? When you think about it, is Sayaka okay with just being there, considering other people's feelings? As a secretary, is it enough to just exist in that role? Well, I guess it's not easy to get noticed if your abilities aren't really high. Sayaka probably doesn't sleep much, and she's also studying. Oh, I remember something from a bonus novel I wrote. I think I described her as being really busy. No, she's definitely like that. I'm sure doing well in her studies, and she's the top in her club. In that case, it would be better for Sayaka to miss the perfect score. She probably arranges everything, like Kirari's lunch. That's definitely busy. If the president goes somewhere or has a meeting with someone, Sayaka will definitely follow her. As an assistant, she probably doesn't have much private time, right? So, if I were to categorize it, it would be interesting to do it from Sayaka's point of view. I might want to see it a little bit. If you want to read it, please contact Square Enix's Gangan Joker editorial department. So, that's about it for today, right?
Well then, instead of advertising, or rather as a way of promoting it, I just want to say that the way Kirari and Sayaka interpret 'this'. In the volume 6 of the main Kakegurui series called 'Tower of Doors' and this 'Perorin' thing. (Note: 'Perori' is an onomatopoeia expressing the sound of licking.) If you watch it, I think everyone who's interested has already seen Perorin. It was definitely shocking. As I mentioned before, it's Naomura-sensei ’s forest. (Note: Mr. Naomura is the illustrator of Kakegurui. I’m not sure about 'forest' It’s maybe referring to the field of lilies), so I was surprised too. It was like 'Pero' with a licking motion. It was quite the impact. There's also another 'Perorin', and even the second 'Perorin' seems to suggest something in the advertisement. But it might be too early. This is an advertisement saying that. Yes, that's right. Well, that's all for today. Thank you very much.

Kakegurui Chapter 106 spoilers / chatter ahead
quick preamble that this will be a stream of consciousness-y write-up, so maybe we're subject to being a bit disjointed this time. maybe some typos. who knows.
but in any case one thing i will talk about though is that in chapter 106 we see another callback to older chapters. And while you can argue that I was just imagining the parallel in 28 vs 104.5, this one is pretty clearly deliberate
Chapter 29 (tower of doors) vs Chapter 106
These chapters have taught us that Yumeko's impulses seem to be inborn, and that's Just How She Is, but there's pretty clearly a case to be made if we posit that her actual behavior and...methodology? is largely informed by Kabura. Nature/Nurture type thing.
Yumeko is able to clock that Sayaka's "everything" is her connection to Kirari because Yumeko herself was "everything" to Souko. Kabura forced Yumeko and Souko to become effective strangers and Yumeko is aware of the impact that has.
ok that notwithstanding though, I don't think Kabura has actually...outmaneuvered Yumeko. She has this whole shtick about how Yumeko is some completely different beast and how she has the potential to 'swallow the Hundred Devouring Families' (something Kirari has been shown to have a vested interest in seeing happen, mind you) and separating her from her sister was done in the interest of minimizing Souko's positive influence and maximizing Yumeko's innate unhingedness.
Sure, yeah, she did that much.
But if we presume there to be a parallel between chapter 29 and 106, then there's probably another parallel that'll follow: how things actually turned out.
In the Tower of Doors, Sayaka lost. She threw herself off the tower, Kirari jumped after her, and because Sayaka had (either intuited or guessed luckily) chosen the correct door to jump from the two of them landed on that safety mat. Adhering to the condition that 'they were strangers', Kirari circumvented the finality of it by simply re-introducing herself. like. el oh el. el oh el el oh el.
Now I naturally don't expect there to actually be a 1-to-1 parallel therein, but what I AM getting at is that Yumeko clearly still holds some regard for her older sister.
1. She doesn't call Kabura 'big sis' when asked to AND 2. she outwardly reacts when it's suggested that she'll see Souko:
Also note that Kabura drops this line on her after having her get ready for a funeral like...gorl...
I don't think this is a funeral for Souko because that just. makes no sense. Maybe the aunt? Or maybe this is related to Souko's collapse earlier in the chapter (the point at which she's hospitalized, persnaps?) and Kabura is just being Really, Really Mean. Hmst've.
3. She's paying for Souko's medical expenses out of pocket:
and 4. She still wears the ring that matches Souko's (originally her parents' engagement rings), an accessory that she's already mentioned makes her feel connected to them:
and like, maybe this is just a me thing, but if I were a young child and didn't remember my parents at all, but me and my sister who I DO know end up wearing their engagement rings as a matching set... I'd eventually end up associating the ring with my sister. Ionno! Just a thought!
ALSO in regards to the ring, Yumeko is literally never seen without it. She wears it in that really sapphic two-page spread with Mary. She wears it when metaphorically (and illustrated as... homura i just want to talk) 'stripped bare' of her attachments. The ring is HIGHLIGHTED in multiple (albeit not all) chapter/volume covers
That ring is part of a matching set with the one Souko wears, so that might actually be the single piece of something material that she ascribes sentimental value to. and like gee, I wonder why.
This is all to say that, if we use the wording from the aforementioned parallel, much like Kirari and Sayaka were not 'made strangers' with finality, it really doesn't seem to me that Kabura was successful in severing Yumeko's attachment to her sister. You can argue that she separated them, and she most definitely did, but stuff like trying to get Yumeko to call her 'big sis' is a pretty obvious acid test that she's not been shown to pass yet.
#long post /#the kkg deep dive#kakegurui spoilers#sorry for talking about kkg and yumeko. it will happen again.

Note:: Kakegurui XX Episode 10 spoilers
Kakegurui AU ft. Kirari! Ayato x Sayaka! Thoma. Specifically the Tower of Doors arc………Ayato shocking Thoma by jumping off the tower with him, only for them to safely land in a garden of pure white lilies…….Thoma re-swearing his allegiance to Ayato under the full moon…….with the knowledge that Ayato, despite what his mindgames may suggest, holds a special place in his heart for Thoma.
A pure, loyal person like Thoma isn’t safe in their academy, after all. So Ayato will keep him by his side, see to it that Thoma will remain as his dog and no one else’s Housepet.
#so it appears that i *did* end up writing smth for ayato#not in the way y’all might have expected tho lol#this idea spontaneously came to me after reading a thomato fic and recalling kakegurui so it checks out sksksks#thomato/ ayathoma……..god i love their ship dynamics#ayathoma#thomato#ayato x thoma#thoma x ayato#kamisato ayato#thoma#jessamine-writing

the new kakegurui chapter came out...
i gotta admit, so far the kkg manga has been soooo mindblowingly consistent with its way of unpredictability. to give context, let me try to illustrate:
remember the summary meeting? remember how it was emphasized continuously during the arc that only one winner would emerge from the entire meeting?? then, remember how TOTALLY unexpected and out of left field it turned out that yumeko and mary tied?? we were thrown headfirst to a shock level that made us wonder the innate possibility of it happening.
in fact, in every single gamble in kkg, we were always thrown in varying measures of shock level that's sooo unpredictable we are always left wondering, 'how did this happen?'
i mean, might you ever guess in a million years that the tower of doors rotated every turn so as to provide a shortcut for the players? would you ever infer that yumeko and mary would switch boards before playing indian poker? can you even predict back then that SHE wasn't a real election officer?
point given, we're all probably attuned by now with this reoccuring theme of the series--its consistence of being unpredictable. it's probably why we enjoy reading the series so much. at least, in my case, i always get thrilled at moments when the story deviates from what's ordinary and clichè and predictable.
but you know what's (probably) the only thing predictable in the series?
it's her
yumeko's addiction and insanity with gambling has always been a familiar factor of the series. she does what she can in order for her opponent to experience the same risk as her, gets thrilled with the risks of random probabilities, and doesn't care for a fact whether she wins or lose, just she can enjoy simply the gambling itself.
unabatingly, we would wonder how our protagonist turned out this way. why and how did yumeko get so addicted to gambling? when did it start? what motivated it? surely, yumeko had a point in time where she was a "normal human" driven with the same fears as the rest of us... an origin story, if you will.
before this arc, we were hinted that it had something to do with her sister--who's confined permanently at the hospital making paper cranes out of money.
in my case, i had thought that the reason yumeko became the way she is was because her sister was incurable from a huge amount of gambling debt and yumeko is probably acting on nihilistic surges because of it.
but now, we see it's not the case
yumeko, right from the start, has been this way. she was literally born and bred with this insanity of gambling that literally runs in her blood. this revelation had unmistakingly broken the notion that there was a causality on yumeko's nature. yumeko's the way she is because she just is. there is no "origin" story of her nature in the first place.
this feels to me that kakegurui is breaking usual shonen manga conventions that protagonists perform their motivations based on some sort of causality. hell, most stories in general flow this way. bruce wayne didn't became batman because he just is, bruce wayne became batman because his parents got killed when he was young and he desires to instill justice in gotham.
it's absolutely mind-boggling to me. here i was, waiting for some huge unpredictable twist that reveals how yumeko became this weird gambling psycho, when in fact there is NO twist. yumeko doesn't want to gamble with kirari from a deep-seated feeling of revenge, nor is she acting from influence from defeat of her sister or nihilism. yumeko is quite literally the same entity true and true.
it's intriguing to me now that since yumeko is yumeko, what narrative point is the series trying to tell with it.

Round 1 of 8, Group 7 of 8
propaganda and summaries are under the cut (May include spoilers)
Kakegurui: 2.10 The Logical Woman
Yuna Yomotsuki theorizes that many of the distributed votes are being held as proxies for some of the front runners. Meanwhile, Sayaka solves the trapdoor puzzles and descends to the 1st floor before Yumeko and retrieves one of the two lilies. On Yumeko's next turn she also arrives on the 1st floor. However, on the ascent, Yumeko reaches the top first, She had correctly guessed that the outer part of the tower rotated after she opened an outer door, and then used the central staircase to travel down and back up. Having lost by using logic rather than intuition, Sayaka opens one of the outer doors and jumps from the tower. Surprisingly Itsuki Jumps as well, grabbing Sayaka as she falls and they both land on a soft safety mat instead of hard ground. Itsuki takes pleasure in Sayaka thinking that she was falling to her death, reflecting on their opposing characters, the logician verses her own intuitive nature, and she asks Sayaka to be her secretary again.
The Sopranos: 4.13 Whitecaps
Junior's trial comes to an end, but Tony's trials are just getting underway. Also, the Sopranos almost purchase a house on the beach.
Probably the greatest acting showcase to be put on tv. Won a ton of emmys

So after poking around for a bit, it seems like the average build time for a five-floor building is anywhere from 4 to 16 months, depending on the nature of the building (how many offices and such).
Given the non-standard nature of the Tower of Doors and factoring in other things like hiring contractors and engineers, designing the structure, finding and purchasing land, and procuring materials, I think about a year’s total build time seems like a pretty safe estimate.
The timeline of events in Kakegurui is unclear, but it seems like the Tower of Doors takes place a few weeks to a month after the start of the series, which means that the Tower must have been ready to go by the start of Kirari’s third year. For this to be accurate, Kirari must have started planning the Tower some time in her first year. And in Twin, we learned that Kirari transferred to Hyakkaou mid semester, like Yumeko, meaning that her first year was shorter than normal.
Kirari really took one look at Sayaka and decided to build her a five story tall rotating escape room love confession/death trap.
