NE Vacation lets gooo

So I'm still really worn out but less than I ended up being yesterday so HERE is a post about the trip I just went on! It's gonna get real big and have a couple photos so I'll just go ahead and cut it here lol

-We went to visit family in Rhode Island...I have been to NYC a couple times but not any further north than that so anything in New England was a brand new experience. I was not a fan of the humidity (pretty arid here at home lol) but I like ocean and forest so I thought it was super pretty! I could not believe all the flowers and blue/purple hydrangeas EVERYWHERE

-We did fly in and out of Providence airport...but since it is super tiny we had to do connecting flights both ways. Wednesday last week we had to get up at 3 AM (after I had a full work day the day before) to get to the first plane, and on this Tuesday the layover between flights was REAL tight so both travel days were kind of brutal.

-ANYway, we ended up going to the Brimfield Antique Show in Massachussetts for two days. I don't think we covered a quarter of the show, we didn't expect it to be as enormous as it was. I ended up getting an antique inkwell shaped like a shell (it rotates on its stand), a metal dog, some vintage postcards (I love old landscape photos and interesting buildings), an old fan with a beautiful mountain painting on the front and a funeral home ad on the back (wtf lol), and a vintage travel guide to Rome with a lot of pictures but everything in Italian.

-Some other family from New York ended up coming with us to the antique show, as my aunt had rented a Vrbo (first time I've been in one) and there was plenty of room. One of those days we got takeout from a local restaurant and there was a machine in there dispensing pokemon cards for 50 cents...I thought "Sure why not" and got one - it ended up being a Dark Energy card instead of actually anything so I thought that was extremely funny

-We also went to Boston for a day - very pretty as well! I liked it way more than NYC to be honest. I had NO IDEA there were so many tunnels! Rained on us a ton though it cleared up by the time we did a bus tour. I am a big fan of brutalist architecture so I thought the one government building (the bus tour guide called it the Hurley building, I think) was REALLY cool. Wish I had gotten a picture of it but I was on the wrong side of the bus. Also: Bostonians, I am very sorry but your green line subway train makes possibly one of the worst sounds I've ever heard.

-Uhh, what else did we do....after that we did actually do stuff in RI. Went to Ft Adams, went to Blithewold Manor, did a scenic ocean drive...I love how none of those Beachfront Home buying shows actually show the wild amount of traffic caused by people trying to get to the beach - parking whereever and blocking lanes constantly. I'd never live that close to the water to begin with as I'd be too afraid of flooding or my house falling in, but I had no idea how bad the traffic situation actually was. 8'D

-We did get a milkshake from Newport Creamery! I'm not normally a milkshake person but we tried them anyway and it was soooo good. Really enjoyed all the local chains in general.

-On the last day we did a lighthouse tour on a large catamaran and that was super awesome, I think it was one of my favorite parts of the trip. There was a Karen on our boat throwing multiple tantrums as the tour did not start fast enough for her liking but that just ended up being also extremely funny. The guy actually doing the tour was great and I'm actually quite curious about the history of the area, as I had no idea there were so many pirates o_o

Escape to the Great White North - Day 2

Port of Call - Newport, RI

We were awakened around 6:30 a.m. with what we thought was the anchor being dropped, but later realized it was the "tenders" being lowered. This means the ship doesn't dock-- you get on a much smaller boat and ride in. 

We ordered room service for 8:00 a.m., as we were hoping to get into Newport as early as possible. We almost gave up on room service around 8:30 and were getting ready to find food, which is of course when they showed up. We ate it on the balcony--a little scanty but good.

The tender process went smoothly--they really pack you in them.  It's the nautical equivalent of a clown car.

A meandering ride later, we landed in Newport, RI.  It's basically split into historic (pretty and vibrant) and touristy (loud and crowded).

The former included a well maintained historic museum--they manage a number of local buildings.

Off to the bus for a tour of historic mansions--The Breakers and Marble House, both built during the "Gilded Age" by the Vanderbilts.  Obscene excess?  You got it.

We had a very entertaining guide on the bus named "Huw"-- a proper British gentleman. His only problem was that he didn't enforce the "we're leaving without you if you are late" bit. So we had to wait quite a while in line to get back on the tender.  They did hand out hot towels and hot chocolate though. An enterprising guy rolled up with a lobstah roll truck.

We managed to make it to the ship before it headed out. A quick shower later, we went to one of the "specialty" (aka not complimentary) restaurants. Our cruise package included two of them, one of which was Moderna--a Brazilian steakhouse.  You start with a high-end salad bar (caperberries, lobster bisque, etc).  Then it's time for meat, in multiple varieties, brought on long sticks to your table, until you tell them to stop.  One of the options: roasted pineapple, something I would normally avoid.  I had two helpings.

Other options: filet mignon, flank steak, top sirloin, parmesan crusted chicken drumettes, lamb top sirloin, pork loin, Brazilian pork sausage, pork belly, and one we did not try, bacon-wrapped chicken breast.

And then dessert, which is putting a hat on a hat.

We also had the signature cocktail, which was the caipirinha, plus a glass of wine.  It was two more drinks than I would normally have.

We had planned to do more activities that night, but between the drinks and the meat coma, we were bushed. Not even a walk on the outside deck could stop the yawning.  Off to our room to crash!

Monday, September 4 - Boston

We docked in Boston at the cruise port, far from downtown Boston, but had a shuttle to Quincy Market. We are sharing the port with another larger ship, but figure Boston is plenty big for all of us. We got on the first bus with only two other people and had a good chance to talk to our driver, who gave us a great description of the areas we passed through. I haven't been to Boston since the early 1990's, so it was a surprise to see the double decker I-93 highway gone and replaced by a tunnel, now covered with a park. Quite an improvement.

We had planned to walk the "Freedom Trail", which visits 16 places of historical importance in about 3-1/2 miles, and is easy to follow with a red brick stripe running down sidewalks, streets and through parks that points the way. First we had to get to Boston Commons, though, and were surprised at how quiet the streets were on the holiday, especially early in the morning. It wasn't that quiet by the time we reached the Commons and bought a guide map to all the sites along the trail. There were lots of tour groups - some of the guides were dressed in period costume - and for the next hour or so we kept running into the same groups. Because of the holiday (we think), many of the places like graveyards were closed, but we were able to visit Faneuil Hall, which was in the middle of the walk. Here there is a big statue of Samuel Adams, as well as a taproom for Samuel Adams brewing. Product placement is everything.

By now it was getting fairly warm, so we tried to find a shady route and keep the red line of bricks within sight, if not directly underfoot. We went into the North End, where there was Paul Revere's house, the old North Church and a statue of Paul on horseback. There were also these wonderful older buildings with semi-circular rooms on the fronts, and many Italian restaurants, part of the heritage of the North End.

The path eventually led us across the Charles River on a temporary bridge to the Charlestown neighborhood, which was once a separate town. Here we found Breed's Hill (more commonly known as Bunker Hill). We took a little respite from the heat in the visitor center there, since the monument itself was covered in scaffolding. From there we moved on to the last site - the USS Constitution, which was the highlight of the day.

She is the oldest commissioned warship still floating, has been lovingly restored, and is still manned by the US Navy. She was first launched in 1797, and saw service in the Barbary Wars, the War of 1812, and other duties before the Civil War, later becoming a training and barracks ship. She has been restored several times, the latest being between 1992 and 1996, and refit with sails, sailed under her own power again in 1997. The National Park Service is in charge of the visitor center, and it's free to wander about the ship, including below decks. It certainly gives me a new perspective on the books I've read set on sailing ships of this period, as they have fit out the captain's quarters, wardroom, officers' quarters, and other parts of the ship with period details.

By now, we were ready to head back, and after walking through some beautiful parts of Charlestown and then crossing back across the bridge, we opted to walk along more of the waterfront back to the Quincy Market area, and take the next to last shuttle. We had dinner out on the back deck of our ship as we backed out of the docking area, and were directly under the flight path into Logan Airport. By then it was dark, and we watched the city lights recede as we headed for tomorrow's destination - Newport, RI. It's supposed to be even hotter tomorrow (it was close to 90 and humid today), so we will see if we come close to hiking the eight miles we did today.

A couple of notes on pictures - Boston is in the middle of an art cow exhibition, with some wonderful entries, and some fairly lame ones. This Greek cow was quite well done, and had a partial seascape on the other flank. The little free library was the most elaborate we have seen. When we first went by it was all closed up from the night, but unfolds origami style during the day. The crane statue is on top of a fountain in the new city park in Charlestown, created after the big dig which moved the highway underground. While doing archaeology, they found the location and foundation stones of the historic Three Cranes Tavern, and included the stones in the base of the fountain.

Ella Mai Will Bring Her ‘Heart On My Sleeve’ Album On A North American Tour

Ella Mai announced that she would be going on tour in 2023.

The R&B singer has announced dates for her “Heart on My Sleeve” tour. The 34-date trek kicks off March 31 in Wallingford, Conn. and travels across North America, with stops in New York, Atlanta, Miami, and Los Angeles, wrapping June 1 in Toronto.

The tour comes in support of her latest album Heart on My Sleeve, which was released in May. A deluxe edition is set for release on Feb. 2.

“The deluxe tracks are some of my favorite songs currently so I’m happy to be able to share them with the world,” said Ella. “I get to bring new life to a body of work that is a year old but remains very close to my heart. Likewise with the Heart On My Sleeve Tour. This is the first time I’m getting to perform some of these tracks live. It’s almost like reading your diary aloud in front of an audience, but there’s no better place for me to be vulnerable than in my music and on stage with my fans.”

This will be Ella’s third headlining tour since 2018. She most recently joined Mary J. Blige on her “Good Morning Gorgeous Tour” last fall.

Tickets go on sale Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. local time, with a pre-sale starting Jan. 25. See dates below.

On our way from NYC to our longer stop in Bar Harbor, we crossed through CT to RI to have lunch in Newport. I could have spent much more time there. It has the quintessential harbor area and then many historical mansions that I would have loved to tour. Vanderbilts had one of their summer “cottages” here. It looks very similar to our cottage in MI:).

After a delicious lunch at the Smoke House, we were on our way to Portland, Maine for the night.

Side note: There was much anticipation about traveling with a puppy, but she has been a welcomed traveler. Each place we visit, she gets a lot of attention from other travelers and restaurants are super accommodating usually bringing her a water bowl for some refreshment. She has found all sorts of random places to rest in the car. Sometimes on a lap and sometimes in the luggage.

We only spent half the next day visiting Portland because we were anxious to get to Bar Harbor. Even though we had limited time, we did enjoy a stop off to see downtown Portland and the Portland Headlight Lighthouse. While downtown we tried the infamous potato cake donuts at Holy Donut. It sounds strange but the are delicious! Chris and I some locally distilled Gin Bourbon. We bought a bottle of the Gin but the bourbon didn’t meet Chris’ standards.

The Lighthouse is surrounded by a beautiful park. Some of the photos captured here will certainly be some of our favorites. There is an old mansion with just the shell remaining that was near to walk around.
