For my handful of lovely new followers in the historical interpreter world, this is an incredibly important account to follow and learn from. However / wherever we interpret history, we have to learn and accurately, sensitively represent the ugly parts of that history as well. We can’t perpetuate the idea that this country wasn’t built on the labor of the enslaved and the genocide of Indigenous peoples. I’m very pleased to see an uptick in an awareness of this duty we share as interpreters, and its crucial for us to keep supporting and learning from interpreters, historians, and costumers of color. Repost from @rekindledhistory • To read some yourself and see how frequent these ads truly were, check out Slavery Adverts 250: Chronicling the role of advertising in perpetuating slavery in colonial America. All the ad clippings were from their extensive collection.  . . . As I build more inclusive narratives for the tours, I wanted to share with you what I've been learning about the intentionally-avoided history of slavery in New England. Our early economy was built on slavery, the Triangle Trade provided the profits that farming couldn't in the North. The Founders avoided confronting the issue in 1776, instead kicking that 'can down the road'. It's been kicked one too many times. . Up on the site (link in bio) are the origins of slavery in Massachusetts. It's not comfortable, but it is enlightening, and that's what history needs to be if educated change is going to happen. I hope it helps.  .  . . . . . . #educateyourself #blacklivesmatter #indigenouslivesmatter #dothework #bostonhistory #boston #salemhistory #newenglandhistory #localhistory #tourrealhistory #massachusetts #slavery #enslavement #slaveryinamerica #history #learnthetruth #facts #colonialhistory #foundingofamerica #itsnotpretty #wearenotaperfectcountry #americanhistory #historicaleducation #historicalinterpretation #museumeducation #history https://www.instagram.com/p/CDWUN0gA5pP/?igshid=1ccjkphbrxxhp
