Some random information about Port Townsend WA for the Dead Boy Detective fandom and other curious sorts.

Please feel free to add onto or correct any of this; I'm going off of memory as a resident Washingtonian and from my couple of visits there personally.

The city was originally supposed to be the main shipping port for the state of Washington but, it was cast aside for Seattle instead.

Geographically, it makes more sense for Port Townsend to be the main shipping port into WA by a nautical standpoint given its location at the Northside of Puget Sound which is much closer to the Pacific Ocean.

However, from a logistics standpoint it makes more sense to have the main seaport be as far inland as possible to cut down on ground shipping travel, time, and cost.

Architecture:

Port Townsend is a city frozen in time with regards to its Victorian era homes and other local architecture.

As historic landmarks, and places of significant cultural heritage, all buildings within the historic overlay district are protected from being torn down.

If you have a love of history, love of Victorian architecture, or simply want to admire the town for its involvement with Dead Boy Detectives, Port Townsend is a delightful little gem hidden among the lush landscapes of Washington State.

When her parents retired in 1989, Henderson's daughter Gaynelle decided to open a branch of Henderson Travel in Washington, D.C. They closed the Atlanta agency, and Gaynelle carried on the Henderson name, running a federal government contracting division and leisure travel division from Washington.

"The name really is a significant brand," she said. "Not only in the African-American community, but we're recognized in West African countries, as well, in a very important way as having really built a commercial bridge between America and Africa [then known as 'the Dark Continent'] that did not exist before."

And in the 1950s, it was far from easy for a Black woman in the American South to get the proper accreditations to issue airline tickets and operate a travel agency. Based on Freddye Scarborough Henderson's handwritten notes, kept by her daughter Gaynelle, a bit of luck was on her side. Thanks to a more masculine sounding first name, and the English-sounding Scarborough, Freddye believed that issuing authorities thought she was a white man.
