#TotalStories - @peak_district_pov Depression Vs biking... A love/ hate story. I didn't take a single picture while out riding yesterday, just mooched at the back of the pack hating on my bike. So I stole this from a mate. Winter blues are hitting hard this year, lacking in confidence, lacking in fitness from a few months back with a slowdown in getting out riding, gaining weight because I've been eating my depression etc etc Riding my bike is whats kept me away from needing any form of medication these past few years. Recently though I've been struggling to enjoy rides, lacking in confidence, putting too much pressure on myself to enjoy it knowing the good vibes are what get me by. It's been tough. What is getting me though is the constant encouragement from my mates and loved ones. Anyone who suffers knows you'll have the bad periods. My advice, keep getting out. Keep on peddling. DON’T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF - #TotalStories - @szwenduro “Very often we tend to focus on the things we didn’t do, or we didn’t do right. We tend to compare ourselves to people who do things better. And there is nothing wrong with that. Unless… We do it too often, are overly hard on ourselves, or simply forget about what we have accomplished. And this is the case with mountain biking. At least for me. I look with jealousy at people who send big jumps while I am casing every one of them, always shaking nervously. I am always not enough. But when we look from a different perspective and compare ourselves to, well, ourselves from the past, everything changes. Yesterday I jumped a drop that I have never tried before. Not the biggest one, not the gnarliest one. But the one I was always scared to jump. It wasn’t perfect, but I did it at last. And yes, maybe the picture shows how scared I was and I look rather awkward. But sometimes it’s not important how we do things. I suffered lots from personal anxiety for various reasons for most of the year and on top of this had to cope with the unexpected loss of both a much loved relative and very good friend. It’s not all doom and gloom though, in late December 2020 I purchased a lovely second hand bike and haven’t looked back. It has been my escape, my ticket to joy with family and friends, and is helping me learn something new almost every time I go for a bike ride. #TotalStories - @dwd85_ FIRST NIGHT RIDE “Earlier in the week I got talked into my very first night ride. I’ve been riding around two years and always put these off. To the point where I haven’t bothered buying lights because it’s just never appealed to me. All the run up to the ride I was feeling really nervous and anxious as well as excited. A couple of times I tried to get out of it, but my mate kept on and even the wife was telling me to get out and give it a go. Day of the ride came, after one last effort to get out of it, and a reply from my friend saying “I’ll see you there”, I just sucked it up, got my kit together and headed out to meet him. First trail in was a little sketchy but really fun. A completely different perspective to the day. By the time we’d got to our third trail and one of my favourites to ride in the day, all fear of the ride had gone! It was spectacular. As my mate said - “you was flying through there then!” It was like hitting that big feature you’ve been eyeing up for a few months. I just felt really exhilarated by the end of the ride. So glad I gave it a go. A set of lights are now on my Christmas list and I’m really looking forward to the next night ride. My advice to anyone who’s in the same boat I was in. Give it a go! I think as long as your with someone who’s pretty experienced or done these types of rides before and you stick to your own pace, then you’ll love it! #TotalStories - @lilliput_capers “I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome on the bike and at races this year (something it’s taken me some time to understand, side effect from the car crash that *will* one day make me even more badass when I crack it 😈). Half way up to @world_enduro I nearly turned around to come home when I had a panic attack. After some constructive conversation from @shakalifestylecoaching on the phone, I got there, started and began to settle😌 One thing I loved about the event was seeing so many people I’ve come to know over the years at races just out and about the course and in the race village.
