Milestones

This episode continued the theme of reunions but in more  depth - from the last Night Watchmen to Hound and Beric and, of course, the Lannister brothers. It was also the meetings we long imagined like Tromund and Jamie trying to one up each other over Brianne.

This scene was the most hilarious part of the episode and it’s most heartwarming. From Tortmund instantly recognising his greatest rival for Brianne’s affection and proceeding to boast and then push for what Brianne wants when she felt she couldn’t. I loved how Tormund basically goads Jamie to do that. Partially, as a way to show he also cares about her as much as Tormund does. But most of all because he genuinely doesn’t understand why it’s a thing. And when Jamie does it he cheered.

Sometimes it’s good to have an outsider come and ask simple question about one’s traditions. When you are part of the culture some things are so entrenched you can never find a good way to question them because the consequences seem like too much. And someone who is not part of it, who doesn’t understand why it’s even a thing, can ask those questions. In the right moment this kind of “fuck tradition” can lead to this kind of great things.

And Jamie showing Brianne the respect she deserves both in admitting she’s better to lead and acknowledging her skill and finally in giving her something only he could. He makes her dream come true even after she gave up (but the hope always stays inside like a tiny flame). That moment when he knighted her was one to cheer for (and name episode after) - just like Tormund did. (Personally I root for her to keep them both but I’m pretty sure they all going to die.).

I could almost hear the thousands of shippers Arya/Gendry who screamed in joy during this episode. It creeped me out all those years ago but now that Maisie is an adult I’m happy for all the shippers who got their wish. It was also very nicely. I really liked how it concentrated on her scars to drive home she isn’t the kid he knew and remind him that his attempts to protect her are misplaced. I even liked her interrogation scene as now she knows about his Baratheon heritage and what Melisandre did to him. They are not going into this completely blind.

This show always had tendency to bend to narrative expectations like that (Dany/Jon exist for the same reason - so many fans wanted it). I’m not sure I approve since it seems so much just giving into the horrible storytelling clichés (see all those waiting for Jon the poor boy to king fantasy staple or Dany being sacrificed as Nissa Nissa) but I understand the satisfaction when it happens.

The truth is the only couple I root for to survive and get their happy ending is Missandei and Grey Worm. It’s not that I want for others to die but I don’t care that much either way. But it’d be nice if these two do get to go somewhere nice. Although, going home probably won’t be what they imagine it’d be I wish they could. (Very doomed - both of them.)
