One guy. Er, I mean two, no, no! Four, four completely different guys, no correlation between them, no sir! Started this around same time as this KID one. It should be same style proportion-wise. As I was messing around for fun/on purpose of finding something that more cartoony? simpler in flow? Anyways, the design/style notes/thoughts under the cut, I did put lots of my exhausted braincells into Kaito/KID difference
Overall style inspos: 1) "I need to think of Sonic but like more human-y" 2) Miho Shimogasa (PPGZ/Kaito Joker/BatuSpi Toppa Bashin) 3) PSWG and SPvsW lol kinda, just from my head how I remembered em though
>Cone and Shin: Originally wasn't planning on putting shadows in his eyes, but without em he's straight up "People with blue eyes" meme. Creepy too much. Neat and sharp a bit. Cone is a pain to size correctly. I think I kinda got it right? But maybe he should had been just tad taller? You never know if he's like 95cm or 1m and something Side note, but Cone's shoes really make me think of Sonic's- >Shin and Kaito: Neat and bit sharp vs more laid back and messy. Also more puffy/round on corners? I basically want him to have puffy sleeves/sleeves that got some volume to em because it fits the magician in my eyes. Adds to hands/arm movement Also Shin's eyes of more your blue/dark blue shades, while Kaito's of blue-ish purple That's to say, I imagine/think Shinichi is the one who hunches more, while Kaito is the one who tends to lean back a bit/keep posture mostly straight (if he ain't sleeping in class lol) >Kaito and KID: Kinda pathetic and messy vs your perfect phantom thief. More shadowy/half-closed eyes vs "oh he's bright awake and ready to go stupid go crazy". Some guy vs the charisma itself. That's to say, shadows cover Kid's visible eye most of the time. And he also has that grin...or his mouth hidden at all. His hair appears bit more fluffier and neater, too. I also tried to keep that juxtaposition with Shinichi of "more sharps vs more round" with him as well. Overall, I like the thought of what if Kaito was more loser in canon, as in less people in school liking him, pitying for his family situation, etc, no entirely of course, because it's simply him, but feel it be more fun in contrast with Kid (and Shinichi) Also, for Kid's cape...just didn't felt like drawing it here, you can excuse me, right?
I think that's all I have to say, but if there's anything ya wanna point out/hear, please ask away!~

Which card game anime best treats female characters?
Tumblr media
I'll list off ones I think do a pretty decent job:
Cardfight!! Vanguard Season 1
Misaki gets fairly decent focus, a character arc to a degree, and a decent rivalry with Asaka. Asaka however tends to be pretty flat in terms of personality, and most of the surrounding female characters are creepy, annoying, or kind of flat, outside of Emi (hopelessly oblivious) and Misaki and Kourin, I think.
Battle Spirits Shonen Toppa Bashin
The show's plot is awkward to bad, but the character writing surrounding Mai Sunshine (a.k.a. Suiren) and Fumiko, the show's two major female characters, tends to be well handled character growth, and they don't do too badly despite the main focus of the story being on Toppa and J, the main character and main rival.
Battle Spirits Shonen Gekiha Dan & Battle Spirits Brave
Both shows have small but decently concentrated on female cast. Kajitsu is a plot device to a degree but her problems are treated as important and worth resolving for the cast once the problem is explained to them, and they do their damnedest to do so.
Mai Viole is in a relative position of power in the team group for the first show (They're riding on her ship, and she tends to do pretty okay with games), and a decent amount of her arc in Brave is dealing with her romance with Dan, along with PTSD from the first show. And she ends up I think the second to last boss in the story to try and stop Dan, and ends up using a brutally devastating Black/Red Dragon Deck for that.
Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Season 1
Yuzu was literally a major driver of the plot for most of the season, her story arc to get stronger on her own after getting asswhipped by Masumi was legitimate, and her rivalry was decent.
Masumi was good until she got hit by the amnesia bus, but for that early period people were super into her.
Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS
Romin was a valid main character with decent story arcs and beats, and generally was given as much time to do with the plot and bounce off her friends as the others.
Asana was a fairly solid arc villain with a legitimate backstory, a strong deck, and a reliable group of minions.
Mimi's ongoing arc was fairly legitimate, they did look at her position as the main adult with decent validity and her trials and tribulations as an older viewer felt familiar.
Cardfight!! Vanguard G
Rin and Tokoha were both pretty reasonably well handled, treated as competent players, with their own goals and ambitions, as well as characters like Verno who had their own goals. Ditto Luna and Am's story arcs being pretty okay for a toyetic kids' show. Like over all, the show was never particularly malicious to its women, and most of the female cast regularly did Stuff, even if they never quite were like front and center, they definitely were on the stage.
Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress
Megumi has a pretty decent focus, is a genuinely decent player, and is fairly well handled. Tomari is positioned as a strong woman (who beats down a corrupt former Buddhist monk), and one of the few "I'm a decent human being" cops that feels decently earned, with rough edges. Haruka has strong motivations to protect her charge. And Mirei has a well handled story arc, personality, and is one of the few times I've seen someone Blind treated with a fairly realistic depiction in anime.
Feel free to challenge me, etc.

I finally finished all of Battle Spirits! I’m gonna dump some thoughts about the individual seasons and then rank them after all the text. Big text dump so under the cut!
Shounen Toppa Bashin: Pretty good, kind of a lighthearted slice of life type of anime but with card games in it. The game doesn’t take up much of the episode like maybe the last 5 minutes, which is good considering I don’t think the card game is the interesting. Love the characters, love the cute critter mascots, love the cute art style. The style for the spirits kinda suck tho, they get better later on but this is the ugly phase for them IMO.
Shounen Gekiha Dan: Also pretty good. It’s more series and they play the card game for half the episode so you’ll get 10 minutes of plot and then 10 minutes of card game and that’s essentially gonna be how long the card game goes from now on. Characters are pretty strong too, Clackey Ray being my fave (helps that Daisuke Ono voices him so it’s like a flirtatious Jyushi.) It’s still a little on the lighter side of things but it’s more of an adventure show than Toppa.
Brave: This one is where I kinda... stopped paying attention kinda. It’s a continuation of the Dan season but stakes are higher, and shit’s a lot more serious. There’s not a lot of humor and that’s kinda boring to me. *shrug* Doesn’t help that best boy Clackey gets pushed aside to other characters. I hear that this is the best series but I don’t agree, but then again I prefer lighter fair. Plus considering my brain just turns to mush when the card game happens it’s just like... “shit happens on screen and all of a sudden, it’s over and I don’t absorb a thing that happened in the battle.”
Heroes: Heroes goes back to being a somewhat lighter slice of life series. Card game still goes on longer but it’s more comedic and there’s no big bad or anything. Just a series of tournaments sprinkled in every so often. Characters aren’t bad, but they could be a little better. Best charas are Chihiro, an aspiring card artist, Tegamaru, a serious rival but is nicer than he looks (lowkey reminds me of Paul from Pokemon D/P but not a piece of shit) and voiced by Jun Fukuyama, Mika, the card shopkeeper that constantly cosplays as either a Penta or a panda (so you know... the best character), and of course, Safari, best pupper. All in all, pretty good. I don’t think it’s better than Toppa Bashin since they focus on the card game more but still, worth a watch.
Sword Eyes: Similar to Dan it’s another adventure/fantasy season. I don’t think it’s THAT good, I do kinda prefer the Dan characters over the Sword Eyes characters but not all of the SE characters are that bad. I like Kitzakura and Hagakure just fine but there’s a lot of them that don’t get good characterization. It’s also not as serious as Brave but I think it was a touch more serious than Dan. But it’s just kinda meh.
Saikyou Ginga Ultimate Zero: This is ultimately the best season IMO. The characters are great and the art is great. It’s another adventure series but in space! I enjoy how the main boy Rei, instead of being the obligatory “main chara must use red and be a little hot-headed”, he’s primarily a cheerful dude that uses all colors depending on the day. One of his starting colors is red though, but it’s still refreshing to not have the main dude just use red. There’s also a couple little dragons who are essentially the mascots of the series but can also be summoned into battle which is a first for the series. I think having them be actual characters is way better than just them being mindless monsters that just show up for the battles. The other characters aren’t that bad either, there are two tag along kids that joins Rei, but they aren’t terrible IMO. Salt is gr8 (but there’s my JunFuku bias), there’s a Team Rocket-esque group that are pretty fun, and the rivals are pretty good too. The art is rly nice, bright colors, different locations almost every episode and they’re all pretty sweet. While the story kinda goes to shit later on (esp in the last 5 or so episodes when the actual big bad shows up) but the majority of the show is super good. Def worth a checking out.
Burning Soul: It’s weird how the best season is followed by the worst season. The story is predictable and boring once the tournament is set up, the art isn’t that special. The characters aren’t interesting at all (save for Kanna who doesn’t battle at all and is just there for explanation, and Hanzou who battles like 3 times), and tbh... the worst of all is that it’s ALL battles. There’s a couple eps in the beginning that doesn’t have battles in the episode, but this is the first series that has battles that go on the entire episode. So if you’re not into the card game this is gonna be a bad and long one. One notable thing about this show is that it’s the only time where a protag from a previous series is involved. For the New Year’s special they bring back Bashin for a tag battle. But other than that, there’s not rly a lot of noteworthy things about it IMO. Pretty bad.
Double Drive: This is the last of the main Battle Spirits series and possibly the hardest to find? The person who was subbing BS (heh) got so burnt out by Burning Soul that they stopped subbing the series and so Double Drive isn’t fully available at the time of this writing. And it might be for a good reason. While Drive is a touch better than Soul, it’s kinda weak. Characters keep losing their prized Zodiac cards in battles so they have to get it back the next episode and it goes back and forth like that. The characters are OK, like Sandrat and Mei are fine, Mofumofu and Shaushau get the seal of mascot approval from me but some characters like.... Eto and Kinoto do mostly nothing (besides heal and steer the ship) and aren’t particularly interesting. The humor on it is a little better, it’s lighter than Burning Soul being mostly serious but still. I prolly wont be back to watch it in case the entire series finally does get subbed and put up.
Brave Saga: A continuation of Brave, it’s a small mini series that spans 3 episodes and I think that works best IMO. After Ultimate Zero, the standard 50 episode length series was wearing on me so having something I could finish in an afternoon is good for BS and I think the writers knew that considering this is the first BS animation after 2 or so years after Double Drive (I assume Soul and Drive didn’t do so well generally). But anyways, it’s not bad. I wasn’t burned out from it and I was looking forward to seeing Clackey again. I also enjoy that some characters from Dan that were omitted in Brave like Zungurii and Magisa make a come back. So if you finished Dan and Brave then Brave Saga is something to check out.
The next series called Kakumei no Gallette isn’t out yet, but it looks to be similar to Brave Saga where it’s a small OVA series so that’s excellent! I’m looking forward to it~ Anyways onto the ranking from best to worst.
Saikyo Ginga Ultimate Zero
Shounen Toppa Bashin
Heroes
Shounen Gekiha Dan
Brave Saga
Sword Eyes
Brave
Double Drive
Burning Soul
I hope all of this was a good read. I don’t make... a lot of these big text posts because my brain can’t think good and I’m no reviewer. But anyways, those are my BS opinions. (heh)
Oh also, for something more concise there’s also this post too!
