Every Top Gun Fanfic I've Written (So Far)
My poll on what idea to write next has received a lot more attention than I thought it would (over 200 votes already!) and I've also gained quite a few new followers, too. So while you wait for my next fic to be written, I thought I'd direct everyone to all the fics I've already posted!
There are five fics, for a total of 18k+ words:
"To the Sky and Beyond": The Navy didn’t want a Mitchell, in a plane or outside of it, and that was that. Pete’s military career was over before it even began. // Or, Pete’s bartending at the Miramar O Club when he meets a pilot named Ice.
"Metal Under Tension": Maverick is a Transformer with no pilot, but he has Goose in his backseat, and that’s all he needs. Then Goose is gone, and Ice has to fight to put Maverick back together again.
"Red Sky: A Martian Named Maverick": Rooster knows he’s missed out on a lot of changes in Maverick’s life since he pushed his godfather away ten years ago, but he didn’t realize he missed Maverick completely switching government agencies. Not until the day NASA announces that astronaut Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, retired Navy captain and back-up pilot on the Ares III mission, has been left behind on Mars and presumed dead. // Or, Maverick takes the place of Mark Watney. This can be read without knowledge of The Martian.
"sunny feathers drifting down": When Maverick arrives at TOPGUN, he’s young and cocky. In a world where he and Goose both walk away from the ejection with only minor injuries, he also dies young and cocky.
"Carrying You, Carrying Me": Rooster is flying over the USS Kitty Hawk, at sea in the Pacific Ocean, when they get the call: A Navy pilot ejected, and the Kitty Hawk is the closest ship. // Or, Maverick flew the Darkstar west, not east, and neither he nor Rooster are prepared to meet face to face when Maverick stumbles out of the rescue helicopter.
I hope you all enjoy these! Thank you for following along on my Top Gun feels journey.

Headcanon around my "Hangman got his callsign because"-poll:
I personally like the idea of Jake getting his callsign from Coyote or other squad mates (even though canon says that it was Rooster).
I like to think that Coyote is a couple years older than Jake (2 or 3) and that he wanted to become a teacher. They first met because Jake needed a tutor for his English class so that his grades would be good enough to get into the academy.
Coyote's father died and thus "forced" him to drop out of college and support his family. So, he decided to follow his newfound best friend and join the Navy.
Jake wouldn't have made it through the academy (and flight school and TOPGUN) without Coyote's help. They spend hours learning together: Coyote reading everything they have to know to Jake and Jake repeating and explaining everything to him afterwards.
Luckily, the dyslexia isn't too bad so he somehow manages the tests but mostly because he's memorized as many things as possible and therefore knows what he has tk expect.
Somehow, hangman is his first squad's favorite game. During one round he makes the mistake and guesses right which allows him to lead the next round but he ends up failing miserably when he’s trying to spell his own word. Thus, his callsign becomes "hangman".
(He doesn't like it at first but in the end he's just glad that his squad doesn't like to play "scrabble".)

Here Lies Iceman's Personal Space (An Icemav Fic)
Tumblr media
Thank you so much to everyone who voted on my poll! I plan on hosting more polls in the future regarding fics, varying from what you'd like to see released next, to what genres of fics you'd be interested in seeing.
Cross posted on A03
Maybe it was the close, cramped quarters they shared on the aircraft characters. Or perhaps it was the time spent in the enclosed cockpits of their aircraft. Either way, Pete "Maverick" had absolutely no concept of personal space. Ice made this discovery rather quickly.
The first time Ice noticed Maverick’s lack of awareness of his proximity to others, the shorter man had slid up into the booth next to him and seemed to settle in quite comfortably, and, nearly on top of Ice. Maverick was in no way pressed up against him, but he was close enough that Ice could feel the heat radiating off of him from beside him. Lifting his beer to his lips, Ice shook his head affectionately; at least Maverick was on his left side leaving his right-hand free room enough to not elbow the other man as he drank. Maverick was beginning to grow on him, Ice almost couldn’t understand how he’d hated the other man before.
Maverick tossed his head back and laughed at something Slider had said, his head falling to the side as his whole body followed coming to crash into Ice’s side. Ice could only watch as Maverick turned his face into his shoulder, still laughing. And when he’d finished, Maverick sat right back up as if nothing had happened. It was enough to perplex Ice.
The second time that came to mind was the time they’d been out for a walk down the pier on a particularly nice Sunday afternoon. They had been walking side by side down the boarded walkway, Ice taking care to measure his steps so that the shorter man could keep up. Maverick himself was practically plastered to Ice’s side, their shoulders knocking against each other and elbows rubbing as they walked. Maverick had managed to catch the heel of Ice’s shoe multiple times with the toe of his own. Ice frowned as the heel of his shoe was once again pulled down by Maverick’s toe catching at his Achilles and causing Ice to stumble.
“Mav!” Ice called out as he shuffled his shoe back on.
“Sorry!” Maverick rushed to catch back up with him.
“Listen,” Ice caught Maverick by the shoulder and lifted a finger to point at him, “flat-tire me one more time and you’re going overboard.” He stuck his thumb in the direction of the railing behind them and leveled him with a look of mock seriousness. Maverick’s smile only grew at the threat. He laughed and slipped up under the arm that Ice had been using to hold him back, winding his arm over and around Ice’s back and shoulder, practically hanging off of Ice with their height difference. Ice couldn’t help but lean down, trying to be considerate of Maverick’s smaller stature.
The third time Ice had fallen victim to Maverick’s clinginess, so to speak, had been a quiet evening spent looking over the never-ending-ever-growing stack of paperwork Ice had brought home with him from the week spent teaching at TOPGUN.
“What’s that?” Ice felt Maverick before he heard him. Maverick had draped himself over Ice’s back and was peering over his shoulder, their faces parallel with one another. Reaching around him like some mutant octopus, Maverick picked up the paper Ice had been going over.
“Same soup, just reheated,” Ice pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.
“Couldn’t this wait till Monday?” Maverick asked, breath warm against Ice’s cheek.
“‘Fraid not,” Ice sighed again. Maverick only hummed and settled in against his cheek, prepared to stay there, leaning over Ice’s back for as long as it took him to get through his self-assigned homework.
“Thought you were off to bed,” Ice stole a glance at Maverick from the corner of his eye.
“Yeah well, bed’s conveniently empty.” Maverick wound his arms around Ice’s torso, hugging him from behind. “So, I have an excuse to stay up now. What do you want to do first?”
“Finish this paperwork?” Ice raised a brow. Maverick’s only response was to turn his face into Ice’s neck and mutter something against his skin. “What?” Ice tried to look at the other man but it was as hopeless as trying to see your own face without a mirror. Maverick had all but melded with him.
“I said,” Maverick pulled back enough to speak, “‘Nerd’”. With that, Maverick went back to his attempt at completing reverse mitosis between the two of them.
All of these times and more led up to the point where Ice had finally given up and relinquished any form of personal space he’d had before meeting Maverick. Steam from the shower had settled heavily on the bathroom and Ice was basking in the hot spray. It wasn’t often he allowed himself these little pleasures, the hot water rolling off his shoulders and washing away the day's sweat and stress equally.
Footsteps tramping down the hall alerted Ice to the fact that Maverick was home. Ice turned his attention back to the stream of water, closing his eyes again and drifting back off into the relaxed state he’d been in. Everything felt… calm, Ice decided. Like a warm summer’s afternoon rain.
Ice had just reached over for his body wash when his quiet bubble of serenity was burst by the bathroom door abruptly opening and closing, blowing in a quick draft of cool air that chased away the steam.
“Hey Ice,” Maverick’s voice filtered over from the other side of the shower curtain, completely and totally nonchalant. Ice didn’t know quite how to respond to the abrupt interruption. “You will not believe the shit that-” Maverick started before Ice found his voice.
“Maverick? I’m in the shower?” It came out as more of a question than he had meant it to.
“Yeah, cool stuff. Anyway, so this little fucker-” Maverick continues and Ice can hear him moving around in the small space, opening and closing cabinet doors. Doing what? Ice has no clue.
“Mav. I’m like, naked? In the shower. Bathing.” Ice doesn’t know how else to put it more bluntly than that. Wasn't showering supposed to be a private thing?
“Well, I don’t know about showering in your clothes, but generally speaking, that’s how you take showers. Naked. Anyway,” And there Maverick goes, babbling on about his day and the little shithead, Common, Mav, that’s not nice, Ice supplies, still confused as the what exactly is happening. He’s showering and Maverick is in the bathroom too. Not in the shower with him, which Ice isn’t totally opposed to, but just on the other side of the curtain, fully dressed and conversing with him as if this was a totally normal space to talk about your day in.
“Hey,” Maverick says after a quick second, “Ima be right back, don’t go anywhere.”
Where would he go, Ice wants to ask. Instead, he simply leaves a tentative “Okay?” to hand in the air. Once again he is left in blissful peace and solitude as the bathroom door sweeps closed again.
True to his word, and barely a minute and a half later, the door opens once again, the hinges reminding Ice that they need oil.
“Here ya go,” Ice hears Maverick’s voice, and before he can react there is a hand holding a towel around the shower curtain and hanging it on the bar mounted to the wall.
“Thank you?” Ice finishes rinsing the soap off his shoulders before cutting the water and reaching for the towel. The downy fabric is warm to the touch and Ice stops for a second. Had Maverick stuck a towel in the dryer for him? It’s… considerate. Way more so than Ice would’ve thought Maverick could be when he’d first met the cocky sonovabitch. Suddenly, Ice doesn’t mind the idiot on the other side of the shower curtain, now sitting on the closed toilet seat in the direction of his voice is anything to go off of.
“So then this guy- you’ll never guess what he does next- this jack wagon absolutely-” Maverick’s voice carries through the bathroom as Ice pulls the shower curtain open with a soft smile, the warm towel tied snuggly around his hips.
“No shit?” Ice asks, smile growing wider as Maverick nods before continuing on animatedly throwing his hands about.
Ice doesn’t even stop to think as he puts his hand on Maverick’s shoulder and leans down giving him a quick peck on the lips. Of course, this only works to shut Maverick up for the duration of the time that Ice’s lips are on his, totaling to a second at most. The smile stays tugging at Ice’s lips as he leaves the bathroom and crosses over to their room, sifting through his drawer for a tee, the constant and comforting babble following him as Maverick does, and through it all, not once does Ice wish for silence, or privacy, or personal space. If any of those things were present, then surely Maverick would not be. And without Maverick, Ice doesn’t know where he’d be.

Happy Tuesday!!!
I’ve always seen “you’ll always be taken care of” on your poll for Wednesday’s, and the lil blurb you have about it is enough to get me interested!!!
I was wondering if you’d let out a lil teaser about it?
All the love!! No pressure, I just love your writing and I thought I’d try my luck :)
Hi!!! Happy Tuesday to you as well & I thank you so much for this request!!!! It’s actually one of the fics I’ve been working on since I joined the fandom and it holds a special place in my heart. I have a teensy soft spot for Goosemav bc I love friends to lovers 😭 and I keep going back to this fic and never finishing it, but I’m glad someone is taking an interest in it!!!
Goose follows behind Maverick as the man goes through the motions of his day. He's not eating, but at least he's sleeping, albeit poorly. He watches as Mav wakes up from nightmares, twisting in the bedsheets and calling out for him. He always wakes with a start, in a cold sweat, before he's crying and shaking with grief. Goose tries to soothe him, wrapping his ghostly body around the smaller man, willing him to calm down and settle right back into a fitful sleep.
Maverick is on the edge of quitting, of giving up his wings. It makes Goose's heart ache as depression tries to swallow his best friend whole. He watches as people stare at Mav with pity when he walks through the halls of TOPGUN — watches them avoid his name in fear of upsetting Maverick more.
Goose can't handle it anymore as Maverick makes his way into the locker room, effectively cleaning out his locker with Ice standing across from him, silently avoiding the other man. He's standing close to Ice in an instant, leaning in to speak into his ear, hoping what he says makes it through the sound barrier between him and the living.
"Talk to him," he pleads. "Say anything. Maverick needs someone to care. He's going to quit the one thing he loves to do — the one thing that makes him Maverick."
Ice looks up, eyebrows furrowing and head turning from side to side, searching. Goose feels victorious. Ice had heard him.
"Show him you care."
Because Goose had seen the looks Ice had shot toward Mav. The longing gazes filled with burning want. Enough to make Goose seethe with jealousy when he was alive, but now all he cares about is making his pilot smile again.

WIP Wednesday
Over the next two weeks, I'll be posting some snips from the top choices in this WIP poll game. For today's WIP Wednesday, I present you with a wee excerpt from the second-place finisher, a queer-80s Icemav fic currently titled "Separation."
CW for hints of anti-semitism and references to structural homophobia, so the snip is below the cut.
By the time the other pilots at the Academy start calling him “Iceman,” it’s already a loaded term.
There’s the way his roommate means it: Kazansky’s cold. He’s good in a way you don’t want too close to your skin - a substance that gets more opaque and less yielding under pressure. It’s not really a compliment.
There’s a superhero too. He’s just been featured in some comic, Becker tells him, in the year before Ice and Slider get called up to TOPGUN. Ice doesn’t know anything about comics, but the way Becker asks him about it, it’s pretty obvious he’s fishing for something else anyway.
“Bobby Drake’s from Long Island,” he says. “Where in New York are your people from, Kazansky? Brooklyn?”
“Hey, I fucked your mother in Brooklyn, Becker,” Kerner tells him, and Ice pulls his lips into a lazy smile, like he’s only half listening. “She told me you broke her heart by turning out to be such a barf bag.”
Then there are the professional icemen: the one-time grandfathers of the mailmen and milkmen now carrying on the proud tradition of making cuckolds out of office workers with stay-at-home wives. So legendary was the iceman’s appeal, the story goes, that jealous husbands used to build iceboxes into the exteriors of their homes to reduce the risk of any delivery-related infidelity.
There’s a joke in there somewhere, and the punchline hangs over Ice’s military record in the form of a blue ticket. An undesirable discharge. Separation category: homosexuality.

Welcome to the danger Zone - Maverick has stepped to far out of line, with DADT hanging over them and trigger happy CO’s waiting around the corner. It’s too much of a risk to let Maverick continue without dragging them all down. Ice and Slider take it into their own hands too put Maverick in his place. “You wont be able to walk straight after I'm done with you”.
Dagger's Daycare - Maverick finds himself in a situation he cant explain. The daggers are unavailable, and he finds himself in need of help from his old crew. Of cause this wasn't the reunion they expected. “Did you kidnap an orphanage Mav?”
Less Than Achievable - The time Jake was finally shown he meant something to someone. Warnings: Abandonment issues, Daddy issues, Neglect, Self-hatred, Sacrifice TW
Seen Not Heard - Rooster and Payback pull a prank on Hangman, not realizing it could have been fatal. Maverick and Iceman step in to help the pilot recover. "He will never be allowed to fly again; do you realize that?"
You can lead a man to water (but you can't make him drink) [Goose/Mav] - "What about Carole?" Mav protested weakly, his breath hitching still taken back by the proposal. Goose grinned softly placing his hands on Maverick shoulders urging him to lay back gently, "I'm sure she will understand". Or Maverick goes through a dry spell while on deployment and Goose offers to lend a hand.
Tip my Hat to you - After returning from the uranium mission, Bob finds out his long-term 7-year boyfriend was cheating on him. Bob goes to the only person he knows who wont ask questions. Jake Seresin.
Burning in - Jake Seresin wasn’t good at listening to orders, everyone knew that. So why couldn’t he listen for once in his life? If he did he wouldn’t be in this situation. Than again interrupting a kidnapping of an Admiral hadn’t exactly been a part of his plan anyway.
Flat Spin - When Phoenix pulls out a mission last minute, Bob is left with at temporary pilot. It was meant to be a easy scouting mission. So why was he suddenly in a flat spin plummeting towards the ground?
At the end of the storm [Mpreg Jake/Cyclone] - A year after being thrown out of the Daggers, Jake finds himself pregnant. With no one pack to fall back on and his carreer in risk, he has no idea what to do. Luckily Cyclone has an issue with adopting strays. Or Jake gets pregnant and Cyclone takes him in.
I'm Ready Goose, Take me Home - Sarah forces Tom to pick, her and the baby or his wingman. He lets Maverick wondering for a few years, from placement to placement. Leaving Maverick to wonder, why everyone he loves leave him? He has no one left, so why should he stay?
